There seems to be a vast resurgence of sci-fi popularity in movies and television these days. For goodness sakes, Avatar was mentioned at the Oscars! Now, I enjoy sci-fi as much coach as the next person, but I tend to get easily distracted by inconsistencies. For instance, it always bugged me in Buffy the Vampire Slayer that her hair was always perfect after any physical altercation.http://www.cheapuggboots-uk.net/ugg-store-sale.html

Related to my link. As a noted Dutch partisan, am I also allowed to cheer for Spain? I realize they are papists and once invaded Holland, but how can I resist that midfield?

Wow, I guess the last time I had a Monitor Mix-related comment I related it here too. So her latest is about seeing Bon Iver at Holocene in Portland, and I was all like OOO!!! I've been to that place!! It's a tiny-staged, hip, really interesting place, easily my favorite Portland venue (thus far). There I saw We Are Wolves (who were completely amazing), Voxtrot (who were like a bunch of college kids running around the Indian Ben Folds-like leader), and another band whose lead singer was a woman dressed in a red vinyl bodysuit. I could probably find out who that was. Anyway, yet again I give thanks for Monitor Mix, and yet again I wonder why the hell I don't live in Portland.

I didn't know where else to share this comment, so here seems good enough:

Thank you, Brian, for turning me on the Carrie Brownstein's blog. I have been enjoying it, of course, but it just afforded me one of those rare "This-Is-Why-God-Created-The-Internet" moments, which for me are always utterly silly. It's when she concludes her latest blog with this paragraph:

"You know, my hesitation to fully embrace Vampire Weekend might stem from the fact that if you take preppy yacht rock too far, you end up back at Jimmy Buffet."

Genius. And now I know never to listen to that band, so thanks for the heads-up.

I yield. This beats my "Danes are Great!" bumper sticker/T-shirt/coffee mug concept.

Now I've got that cursed song stuck in my head...

Dear Neglected Discussion Board and Secret Diary,

I think I'm developing a crush on Denmark. Or at least on the Danish people. From their familiar-yet-exotic accent to their rocked music to their simple and elegant flag, everything they do captivates me.

I worry that I'm betraying my German-Bohemian roots. Will my ancestors, in the midst of their mutual loathing and suspicion, ever come to forgive me?

Lisa, I'm thrilled that you found the fridge information. I hope the scratch I put on it went magically away.

Ok, I was set to be all high and mighty, but then I realized my initial consideration was made based on the drum track on the EP, and I was ready to concede the 4.

But then I listened to the song again while air-conducting, as I'm wont to do, and I have decided that that song is in 6. You would conduct it in 2 beats/measure.

As much as it can be kind of a spectrum, I'm convinced that Cold Cold Water is in 4, with triplets. Do triplets count? (already getting technical)

Cold Cold Water - Mirah (off Advisory Committee)
Your Ex-Lover is Dead - Stars (off Set Yourself on Fire)
Fake Empire - The National (off Boxer) (starts in overlapping 3 and 4, transitions to 3 about halfway through)

An Honorable Mention should go to "Just the Same" by Gentle Giant (off Free Hand): During the verses, the bass and drums are in 6/4 while the piano, voice, and guitar are in 7/4. Track #1. Those guys were bold.

Overture - And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead (off Worlds Apart) is in a pattern of 5,5,6.

I'm not certain of the appropriateness of this request to this forum, but here it is:

In much the style of the film High Fidelity, I want to make a list of the top five pop songs that both Track 1 and are in time signatures of 3 (or 6, 9, or even 12, i suppose). Basically, who is crazy enough to lead off an album with a song in 3 and make it work?

The two quality candidates I have thus far:

Set Out Running from Neko Case's album Furnace Room Lullaby
My Name is Jonas from Weezer's Blue Album

I trust y'all to know what else belongs on this list; let me know.

a month late, i'm pretty sure it was...

when things go tough... (big pause as he realized he had no idea what he was saying) that's when the tough guys pick it up. I think the key was "things go tough"

Brian, Peter - "It's important to have fewer turnovers than your opponent. I've never had fewer turnovers than anyone."

Wow, sports announcer inside joke AND donut reference. That's called synergy, people!!!
