Doffie, I had the same reaction you did. In the discussion about NoteTaker vs. NoteBook Rob had said:
" I have not been able to dig into NoteTaker as deeply as I would like, but I was struck that this Circus offering was just a "me too" kind of product that looks like it is out to tear some attention away from NoteTaker..."
This seems to imply that NoteBook was cobbled together in a few months just to capitalize on buzz about NoteTaker. It was naive and disrespectful to the amount of time & effort put into NoteBook.
As for me, I welcome competition and believe we benefit by having more than one option available. Competition helps improve the products and gives us better tools.
Yet there is still some validity to the 'copycat' posting - but I think it's mainly in the shareware/small app world. I seem to recall 2 or 3 apps named 'iBlog' for example. One (by Lifli, I think) is emerging as an interesting tool (I bought it) while the others were pretty crude. I almost gave up on the 'real' iBlog when I inadvertently downloaded a clone...
Caveat emptor, of course!

Hi, Rob. I know you didn't specify NoteTaker & NoteBook, but since you had just the day before written about those andf wondered aloud why two so similar apps were turning up at the same time, I assumed you were speaking mainly of those two. Since I read and enjoy your blog often and consider you to be a fair-minded person, I just thought you might wish to reconsider the "copycat" label, a derogatory term, with these or other pieces of software. In any case, keep up the good work.

Doffie, Sorry to push any hot buttons there. I didn't name any specific applications in my earlier post because the post was not about any one or two applications. It was rather a note about the rising number of applications with many similarities that offer only subtle differences and in many ways seem to be feeding off the popularity of a particular new idea rather than offering anything different. Most of the time consumers know what differentiates one piece of software from another, but in some recent cases names are similar to each other, marketing pages look about the same, user interfaces look the same - in other words there is no differentiation between the products on the surface, on the level where regular consumers make decisions on whether to buy product A or product B.
