Here's something to try - run a very simple X11 program like xeyes or xbiff using ktrace. After it dies, look at the output using kdump - it might shed more light on what happened. Similarly, /var/tmp/console.log might have something of value. I suspect it might be the case that something is happening which invalidates the XAuthority file, which would make existing connections appear invalid.

Chris, Thanks for getting back to this thread. I am not sure what is at the root of my problem either. I am still digging into it. Meanwhile, I keep remembering to save frequently and to definitely save before sleeping my machine...

Odd - nothing's change $DISPLAY from the default :0.0, right? (That'd be an easy way to add a network dependency)

This is quite bizarre - I use X11 all the time on a laptop using DHCP on every interface and I can't make this happen.

I have had this same problem but found a solution. I put my computer to sleep many times each day as I go between classes and switch between different wireless networks (PowerBook G3/Firewire). After you start X11 do an "xhost +" This will allow you to launch new apps after the computer goes to sleep. This is a security hole, but for a system that is constantly moving and getting new ip's it works. Apple needs to map it to localhost and not make things dependant on anything that can change with location.

X apps never crash after sleep, I keep gaim running between classes and xterm is up too. X11 never dies, Apple has done a good job.

Chris, no, no process at all will remain running if I sleep and then wake the machine...

Yup, the Xserver for some reason shutsdown (almost) every time the computer goes to sleep (iBook in my case), and you can't open anymore X applications (including xterm) until you restart X11. I found that some X applications that are already opened survives the sleep still works.

Does this happen even with a very simple X11 program like xeyes or xbiff?

Also - what's $DISPLAY set to?

Fritz, Yes, I do run DHCP, but the mystery is that I have X11 quit when I sleep my machine even if the address doesn't change. For instance, when I move from my office with a second monitor hooked to the machine and sleep to remove the monitor and then wake the machine up without the external monitor when I get into the living room...

Never seen that problem. I'm running X11 beta 3 and 10.2.4.

Do you use dynamic addresses (DHCP) that change after a sleep?
It seems this is the cause of some troubles.

Hello,

I think you and your computer should stop sleeping, and you should update the Equinox Project. You didn't even post on the Equinox!!!!!
