I came into a nice PowerPoint add-in:

http://raw.cs.berkeley.edu/texpoint/TeXPoint.htm

You need to be a little brave to use it since it might open a security hole by allowing some un-signed macros.

If your article is a postscript file that has postscript figures embedded in it, you can extract them with a simple Perl script. The result looks a lot better than screen captions.

You can get the script at:

For those of you with .pdf files, here was my experience:
-the linux command-line "pdfimages" didn't work on mine
-converting to .ps (via pdf2ps) was also troublesome
-Adobe Acrobat 5.0 you can do File->Export->Extract Images which did the trick.

/m4: My suggestion to creating pdf files would be to conver them to ps using a ps printer and print to file and then use ps2pdf or www.ps2pdf.com to convert them to pdf. This type of thing has worked well for me.

Charles found a website that provides free conversion from Powerpoint to pdf. The file is uploaded and they return it via email. Here is the url:
http://www.2convert.com/index.jsp
I used it and it was returned in a couple minutes. Also i have not received any new spam email from this site.

Shrinking the size of PDF files.
It may vary depending on what program you use to write your pdf, but the major explosion in the byte size in pdf comes from the images in the presentation. You should set your compression properties of pdf writer to subsample images at 300 dpi. The approach normally used in pdf writer is Bicubic sampling, that for some reason generates a lot larger files than subsampling. I am using Adobe pdf writer. ok, hope this helps.
