Yeah David, I was thinking the same thing. Pay Excel $5K or just fire up the chainsaw. Could be some pretty good firewood.

Uh...I have a chainsaw...and this funny looking tree in my front yard...just kidding. I'll attach a sign to the lightpole in my yard asking Excel not to repair the light. They'd probably ask permission anyway to come through my gate, so for the time being this end of Lower Main is safe from the wrath of unwanted light. Thanks all.

Hi Tim--I've asked Xcel not to repair lights that are "off" now, which they thought pretty odd! There are times, however, when they will drive through town at night and repair the lights that have been broken (over $200 each BTW) although that hasn't happened for over a year now. I'm not big on lighting in the mountains--seems a bit odd.

Have a great Sunday.

If those, with homes around a particular light, prefer that it not be fixed, might we just choose to leave it broken but not remove the pole, thereby enjoying reduced light pollution while not having to pay for pole removal.

Thanks for the street light update, and for the reminder about
washing cars and snow shovels. I'll put my show shovel back in my car right now!!

The street lights were put in years ago at residents' request in the 1960's. Through the years people moving in town wanted the lights to be on, others didn't. Currently there are three street lights out that residents do not want repaired, but others do. The town tries to work with residents to find a middle-ground resolution. To relocate or take out the poles would cost about $5K each, which would wipe out our road and bridge maintenance budget 6K annually--this includes new road signs), therefore no pot holes would be filled.

Don't put your snow shovels away or wash your car until June 1 to ward off the snow!

Here's a poem for spring on this snowy day. KA

Spring and All by William Carlos Williams

By the road to the contagious hospital
under the surge of the blue
mottled clouds driven from the
northeast—a cold wind. Beyond, the
waste of broad, muddy fields
brown with dried weeds, standing and fallen

patches of standing water
the scattering of tall trees
All along the road the reddish
purplish, forked, upstanding, twiggy
stuff of bushes and small trees
with dead, brown leaves under them
leafless vines—

Lifeless in appearance, sluggish
dazed spring approaches—

They enter the new world naked,
cold, uncertain of all
save that they enter. All about them
the cold, familiar wind—

Now the grass, tomorrow
the stiff curl of wildcarrot leaf
One by one objects are defined—
It quickens: clarity, outline of a leaf

But now the stark dignity of
entrance—Still, the profound change
has come upon them: rooted, they
grip down and begin to awaken

Lights are still off. It's still quite dark and amazing and
wonderful. If we could just shoot out those street lights we'd be in star heaven. I've never quite understood why we need streetlights in our little town. The one across the street from my house has never been operational for more than a few days, thanks to some local or other with a bb gun.

Hi... don't know who D&J is? It ain't me but I've been getting calls thinking it is. I don't own a treadmill or a digital workstation but whoever you are D&J, I would be interested in the workstation. One problem however, I am out of town for awhile. If you don't sell it soon put another notice here with contact details and we'll discuss it. I don't usually go on craigslist.
