I just had to share a little story regarding the oft referred to horror that our modified health care system might ever (gasp) look like that in Britain. I was talking to a Nebraska friend of mine that now lives in England yesterday who is recovering from a Hernia surgery. It was diagnosed 9 weeks ago, was a low risk and caused him no pain. This week he had orthoscopic surgery for the repair and was out of the hospital the same day, all better. The cost.... $0. He also told me about the bill for the delivery of both of their kids born in the last few years, they each cost them $150lbs because they requested private rooms. When all the panickers suggest that our health care system might resemble that in Britain, I can only hope it might. Obviously every system has issues but compared to our barbarian for-profit system, it's light years ahead. My 2cnts.

This Saturday Night, a band is coming to play who have travelled literally all the way from Tuscon Arizona to play at the Merc. They are called The Dusky Buskers and play old time busking bluegrass. They were told about The Merc and Jamestown and decided to drive all the way up to play for us- so come out and enjoy some Saturday Night tunes. Matt and Al will have whipped up something delicious for dinner (that does not involve any turkey.) Happy Holiday Weekend!

Re 24 HR Fitness:
I just joined, Steve. I've taken yoga and weight/cardio classes, and used the stairmaster. I like that there are all kinds of people there, not just the bold and beautiful, that it's open odd hours, and it has so many options for working out at any given time you show up. I dislike that you have to sign up for certain classes in person, and that the class size is large enough that if you don't already know what you're doing, you could hurt yourself, because there's no opportunity for personal attention. It's cheaper than Curves or the rec center for me, so it's my current choice for the winter. See you there?

Uh-Oh- Making pie this morning I realized I left my deep dish pie plate somewhere--probably at 4th of July!
If someone has been keeping care of this pie dish, please call me (four five nine - 0154)or just drop it off at the Merc. It's gold, with ruffled edge, probably says "Emille Henri" on the bottom. I'd appreciate getting it back. Over the years, I've tithed quite a number of platters and dishes to Jamestown events.
Thanks, Karen A

we got the last waltz! thanks Cary! By the way, Chris will be part of a group re-creating the entire Last Waltz concert this Friday at the Boulder Theater. This is a great event that they have been doing for years down in Denver around Thanksgiving and this is the first time it's coming to Boulder. In case you don't know, the Last Waltz was the last concert for "The Band". It was made into a movie by Martin Scorcese and is known as one of the best concert films of all time. They were Dylan's backing band and wrote many classic themselves, such as "The night they drove ol Dixie down," "The Shape I'm in," "Up on Cripple Creek," "The Weight" and many more.

Just drove up the canyon late Monday night...very icy out there, and will certainly be bad early Tuesday morning. The stretch between "Carnage Canyon" and Olde Stage is particularly slick--I could see at least 3 distinct spots where cars had spun out. Be careful out there! Nicole I used the services of Door to Door Organics. I have discontinued this because I wasn't using all produce that was sent and found myself at the grocery puchasing other. Perhaps this may work well with more mouths to feed. I was pleased with this service, was always delivered directly, and was efficient to order from their WEB site. Three thumbs up..... Today I invited 4 of my "Boulder friends" up for breakfast at the Merc. They were impressed and so was I. It's always been good but this morning Matt and Alex banged out 5 different dishes quick, hot, and everything tasted excellent. My friends said they'd be back. Also.... I wanted to say that if you need household electrical repairs or upgrades done get Jason Towner to do them. His work is clean, fast, and thorough. Can't say enough about how pleased I am with Jason's work. He really knows his trade.

Jyoti- and all. Sorry for the confusion. The old path along the restrooms and basketball court is still closed.
The area around the (creekside) edge of the park is indeed open. I observed folks using this route today.
To go clockwise; from the parking lot, enter along the edge of (former) Pond 1 just beyond Kytes pile of firewood and left (north) of the concrete barriers. That route takes you along the edge of the silt fence, past the picnic tables. Stay along the north edge of ponds 2$3 and follow the edge of pond 3 to Cemetery Road and back to the parking lot. You can also shortcut back along the east edge of Pond 1; just stay on the east side of the silt (black) and safety (orange) fences. That route is requires a muddy climb back to Cemetery Road.
Please stay out ot the construction area. that would be the area inside the silt fence, safety fences, concrete barriers and Cemetery Road. Hope this helps.

SATURDAT NIGHT- FLOWERS FROM ASHES: A review:
Flowers From Ashes is a conscious group of beautiful and talented musicians that seductively project their soulful melodies from deep within the collective heart and soul. A sweet blend of sugar and spice, carnal undertones are brought out by sexy blues guitar stylin's, primal body moving beats, and silky divine feminine harmonies. The lyrics provide a fresh perspective on the evolution of our souls, transmuting earthly pain into hope and love. Gift yourself with an incredible live experience, you are sure to move and be moved." ~ Sherrie Freeville

Thank you note to Jamestown Elementary Kids
Today I mailed out the letters to Udall, Polis, Rangers and Commissioners that the kids wrote to protest against re-opening Jamestown trails to motorized vehicles. I must say they touched my heart. Their writing was honest, sincere and to me it showed how much they like and how much they care about this small mountain town.
Jamestown Kids, Thank you! You All Rock!

Free Firewood. I have split pine firewood ~1/2+ cord. Also have unsplit pine which should be about a cord when split - but is green and will have to wait awhile. I would prefer someone to take all of it. 303.800.5727

Just picked up a dozen letters or so at the Merc. Excellent! The deadline for postmark is Friday, so I'll extend the offer one more day and pick up remaining letters tomorrow (Thursday) at 5. If you're really inspired you can also write to the people David K. suggests! The most important two per Colleen are the Boulder Ranger District and County Commissioners letters.

The paths around the perimiter of Elysian Park have been reopened while we search for more soil and dollars. Please stay out of the work area. Do not cross the black silt fence or the jersey barriers. We are stabilizing the work area for the winter but will be bringing in more soil through the next several months. Still plan to reseed in the spring. In the meantime, we are trying to save the remaining survey stakes in order to avoid paying for added surveys.
Please also stay away from the area off Cemetery Road where we have stored the rec equipment, parts of the pavillion/fencing etc. There are nails and other hazards. Not a good place for childeren to play.
Recently I have been chasing folks out of the work area and I apologize to anyone I may have offended. With the barriers in place, perhaps I can go back to being my old pleasant self. Ken

Story of A BEAUTIFUL INTRODUCTION TO DEATH and a uniquely caring commUNITY...
It has taken me over a week to write this as I am still incredibly sad and
L O W
over the death of my sweet Sally Rose.
The day it happened was very traumatic at our house, especially for our little Elise (age 3). MANY friends came over and some even dedicated their entire weekend to our family, helping to get ready for Halloween festivities when none of us felt festive at all (but the show must go on). Elise spent her day actively trying to cheer everyone up around her by drawing, singing, hugging, and being very well behaved. At one point, she came outside and sang to me the MOST SOULFUL "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" ever uttered.
TEAM ELISE, which consisted of Catherine Davis, Denise Straus, Jen Lucas, and Jill Brammer immediately stepped in and took rotating shifts caring for Elise, playing with her, helping her make "cheer up" cards for her parents, delicately and honestly answering her questions, distracting her from our sadness, creating her costume, and feeding and soothing her, all the while checking on me and Tom and providing whatever we needed.
Later in the day, Tom and I took Sally to rest overnight in our dear vet, Lisa Cass' garage. Even though she was out of town, Lisa spoke with me by phone, consoling me, discussing the possibilities of what happened, and reassured me that we could not have prevented this and Sally probably would have perished even if we had made it to the vet. It was just her time to go and we feel blessed that Sally died in her own home, surrounded by our love, and in her favorite sleeping spot.
With the help of our beloved friends, we made arrangements for Sally's burial. Rob Koehler graciously allowed us to bring her to his land and chose a PERFECT SPOT on a ridge overlooking Jamestown and the Sawtooth Mountain range. Thankfully, Buddy Khim spent Sunday morning driving his backhoe all the way to the spot and digging a hole, which was MUCH appreciated since we intended to dig into the frozen, rocky ground with pick axes and might still be there!
At high noon, over TWENTY of Sally's friends came to the burial site to say goodbye and support our family, including Rob Koehler, Anne Kosel, Buddy Khim, Jen & Serena Lucas, Rob Zimmerman, Jill Brammer, our dear Neecie, Matt Kohlhaas, Julie & Jordan, Jason & Gayle Towner, Squid, Julie Gussaroff, The Dow Family, Tara Schoedinger, and doggie friends, Dave, Tucker, and Philbert. The greatest gift to me was having Dave The Dog there romping and playing in the snow, providing us with new hope for the future in the wake of such extreme sadness.
After we got Sally ready, I carefully and honestly explained to Elise what was happening (as I had done all along) and asked if she wanted to say goodbye one last time. Surrounded only by the sound of the sniffling crowd, Elise laid down beside Sally's soft head, thumb in mouth, and gently pet her "big sister" as she had done all of her 3 years of life. This lasted MANY MINUTES. Midstream, I asked if she was ready to let Sally go and she said "mmm-hmmm" but stayed there even longer. This experience was PROFOUND for all as this child learned from ALL of us about a very hard life concept while being embraced in the love and support of HER family of friends. Although it was hard for Elise, which was exhibited later in the week, I am so glad that she was part of this whole process as I remember from my childhood our family pets disappearing with no explanation other than "they've gone on to a better place." I never understood...what place could be better for them without ME?!
Everyone then participated in covering Sally and Buddy found a perfect (large) heart-shaped rock as a headstone. When this beautiful grave was finished, we toasted to Sally and talked about the good times. I was overcome with relief that Sally was in her final resting place and I was very comforted that we all gave Sally a perfect send-off.
A mere two days later, I was telling my good friend Louis Maurer that although Sally can NEVER be replaced, I'm not going to last long without a dog in my life (they balance my very existence, keep me sane!). As such, I have been borrowing the Towner Family dogs just to get me through this. Later that night, Louis came to my house and handed me $400 that he collected in a half hour from folks who knew, loved, and helped raise Sally so that we can someday buy another purebred golden. There is the power of "GIVE AND IT SHALL BE GIVEN UNTO YOU" that my wise Grandma Rose taught me.
Hence, I wanted to express MY DEEPEST GRATITUDE (beyond words) TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO SHARED THIS EXPERIENCE WITH ME AND MY FAMILY, including those who were there and those who reached out through writing, phone, e-mail, pictures, donations, dog-lending, or in person. I will NEVER forget how you all held me through this and I will be there for all of you whenever you need me.
This is the village that raises the child and the special commUNITY we have ALL created that exists no where else on earth. We are SO LUCKY AND THANKFUL to be part of it.
Thank you for reading this lengthy passage and for all your support through the years!
Peace and Love from The Williamseseses

I'm trying to sell my place. I just spent a year renovating the place inside and out. This is the website: www.10bramer.com Its 2 bedrooms like they are looking for. Lulu, there's a house on Bramer for rent. Don't know if it is already rented or not, but here is the post from below and contact info:
Would you like to rent a home atop Overland Hill with killer views, granite countertops, cozy wood-burning stove, and much more for $1,200/mo.? We plan to put the house on the market to sell next spring, but we'd like to rent thru June, if possible. E-mail Kara at goleygirl@gmail.com if you are interested.

A summary of what Colleen suggests (along with your personal notes): What You Can Do:
Write a letter to the Boulder Ranger District at the address below requesting that County Road 102J be kept as a County Road; that the gates on 102J be kept where they currently are; that the connector routes not be established around Gold Lake; that they respect the right of private property owners to gate access to their property; that they respect the community of Jamestown\s right to a safe neighborhood; and that they protect our drinking water supply, the James Creek watershed, from reckless OHV recreation.

For those of you that are (like me) challenged by the details of life, like addressing and stamping envelopes, I have a small offering. If you are willing to write letters to the people Colleen suggests, please bring them to the Merc clean-up day on Wednesday and I'll make sure they get labeled and stamped and sent off. (Rainbow, I'll be there around 5 to clean and pick up letters.)

Reminder of tomorrow night's Bread-Making Demonstration. This demonstration is being given by Andy Clark. He is Whole Food's Head Baker for the western region. He has been a chef for over 20 years and travels internationally giving cooking seminars. He will be giving his demonstration on Nov. 10th at the Merc, at 6:30 p.m. and the demo will feature focaccia bread and pizza dough. This should be a great time as well as very informational.

Hi friends,
In response to the pervading world zeitgeist of apprehension, fear and crisis that seems to be paralyzing and contracting our ability to come together and be effective in rising to the challenges that face us, I am instigating and promoting the Make a Joyful Sound Campaign.
What I suggest is that on December 21st, the Solstice, we all make a joyful sound. Think of it as a circuit breaker that stops the flow of apprehension, fear and crisis we are continually bombarded with and that this break resets our rheostat as individuals and as a community.
On the December 21st Solstice make a joyful sound at anytime you can, as many times as you'd like. Make any sound that is joyful to you. Sing, whistle, giggle, laugh, shout, bang pots and pans, whatever. Do this alone or with friends. Organize a Make a Joyful Sound party.
Please pass this on to your family, friends, and organizations.
At this writing, November 9, 2009, we still have over a month to practice!
Many Blessings, And oh, be Joyful!

Re Statue's question. It appears to be a matter of degree. We have the right to protect our community and to encourage those responsible to protect our Forest environs. So, for example, we have the right to protect our homes and belongings, our physical beings etc. We also have the right to pass ordinances that promote the welfare of the community. The question that you raise is where do we draw the line. One might decide that having to slow down for bikers is or is not sufficient reason to do everything to assert our desire to stop them or limit their rights. Similarly, we must decide if the desires of a few to act in ways that they enjoy but that in one days outing can disturb the tranquility of many, many miles of trail, disturb wildlife habitat, congest our community and endanger our water quality is just reason for us to assert whatever power we have to limit the areas wherein they can recreate.

Colleen, the concerns you raised are exactly the ones that occurred to me while reading the plans. Five questions: 1. Are these decisions made locally (by the Boulder Ranger District), or are they made in DC -- or a combination of the two? Any insights on the process? 2. Is there an organized advocacy the decision-makers are feeling from the off-road community or some other force? Any idea who those people are and whether they could be brought into a discussion of our concerns? 3. Are you including Udall and not Bennet because of Udall's committee assignments? 4. Are there phone numbers and/or emails available for these various contacts -- for those of us who have forgotten how to send real letters? 5. What is the role of the County Commissioners in all this?

CALL TO ACTION
Dear Jamestown Area Resident,
On Wednesday, November 4, 2009 the U.S. Forest Service Boulder Ranger District unveiled their draft Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) that displays where motorized travel will be allowed. The public can provide written feedback about the draft MVUM by the end of the day on November 13, 2009. We are asking you to please help by writing a letter to the Forest Service to keep the current level of protection of the forest lands surrounding Jamestown.Map attached to next posting.
Impacts: * The Forest Service is claiming jurisdiction over County Road 102J (Ward Road). The MVUM map shows the segment of 102J from Gold Lake to James Creek as a Forest Service route, not a County route. As a Forest Service route, they could remove the gate at Gold Lake and the middle gate allowing public use of this road. The segment from James Creek to Jamestown is not on their map, indicating that this segment is not a legal road. This would create a situation for the Forest Service to add the section from James Creek to Jamestown in future travel management decisions, thus reopening CR 102J (Ward Road) to motorized recreation. The Boulder County Commissioners closed CR 102J to the motorized public to protect the James Creek watershed that is the source of drinking water for the town of Jamestown and Left Hand Water District downstream.
*The MVUM shows a new connector route around the south end of Gold Lake. The Forest Service intends to provide public motorized access from the south end of Gold Lake onto CR 102J via Forest Route 371.1 and 372.1G. Currently, FR 371.1 is a motorized route that ends at the Spring Gulch outlet of Gold Lake and then continues as a non-motorized trail to CR 120J. Forest Route 372.1G does not currently exist on the ground. Were these 2 new connector routes established through a NEPA process? These newly created connector routes would enable OHV use from Gold Lake to James Creek and to Gillespie Gulch and through lower Main Street in Jamestown. The Forest Service has said that they have the legal right to remove the gates in Gillespie Gulch and to have through access over private property. Opening up public vehicular access from Gold Lake through Jamestown via Gillespie Gulch would impact the town of Jamestown.
Concerns
*Degradation of Public Lands and Watershed: The decision to reopen these public lands to OHV recreation would result in degradation of these public lands and water quality impacts to the watershed that supplies drinking water to the town of Jamestown. These lands are in the designated Source Water Protection Area of Jamestown.
* Lack of Enforcement: The Forest Service currently is unable to provide personnel to enforce the resource damage from motorcycle abuse in the Gold Lake area. The Forest Service does not have enough resources to enforce the laws in these back-woods areas and does not have funding to reclaim the lands that are currently in need of restoration.
*Public Safety for the town of Jamestown: Reopening the OHV route through Jamestown will create a serious public safety issue for town residents. The southern access to Gillespie Gulch is from lower Main Street in Jamestown, a residential area and school bus route. OHV recreational use in this area around the Town would increase fire danger from camping, personal safety from shooting, and encourage destruction of adjacent private property.
What You Can Do:
Write a letter to the Boulder Ranger District at the address below requesting that County Road 102J be kept as a County Road; that the gates on 102J be kept where they currently are; that the connector routes not be established around Gold Lake; that they respect the right of private property owners to gate access to their property; that they respect the community of Jamestowns right to a safe neighborhood; and that they protect our drinking water supply, the James Creek watershed, from reckless OHV recreation.
Also, send a copy of this letter to the County Commissioners and State Representatives at the addresses below. On the bottom left of your letter write cc: Boulder County Commissioners Senator Mark Udall, Congressman Jared Polis.
Get your neighbors to write letters. No form letters please.
Send letters by the end of this Friday, November 13, 2009 to:
MVUM Boulder Ranger District 2140 Yarmouth Avenue. Boulder, CO 80301
Boulder County Commissioners Box 471 Boulder, CO 80306
Senator Mark Udall Hart Office Building Suite SH-317 Washington, DC 20510
Congressman Jared Polis 501 Cannon H.O.B. Washington, DC 20515 It takes a community to protect your watershed. Please help make this happen.
Sincerely,
Colleen Williams, Director James Creek Watershed Initiative Box 110 Jamestown, CO 80455 303-449-2621 colleen@jimtown.org

J.A.M. CLINIC -- SUNDAY, NOV. 8, 4:00pm @ THE MERC "PRACTICAL MUSIC THEORY FOR REGULAR FOLKS" $12 at the door, all proceeds will go to J.A.M.
Hey neighbors, very sorry I didn't post this a little sooner, but I just want to remind everyone of the clinic that I will be teaching tomorrow (Sunday...might already be "TODAY" by the time you read this). My intention is to give an overview of music theory that will be applicable for any musician, at almost any ability level (except perhaps more advanced players who already have a decent grasp on music theory), regardless of what styles of music or what instrument(s) you play.
You do not need to be an advanced musician AT ALL to benefit from this clinic. I believe I have a way of cutting through the complexities of music theory and boiling it down to some basic elements that are in play in virtually all of the music that we listen to. So if your knowledge of music consists of knowing nothing more than a few chords on the guitar, you can still gain a deeper understanding of those chords and how they fit together with other chords, etc.
Here's a little rundown of some of the things I'm planning to cover:
--The "musical alphabet" and the major scales --Keys and key signatures --The structure of major and minor chords --The structure of more complex chords --Chord progressions and the functions of the chords within them --Transposing chord progressions into different keys --An overview of the modes (time permitting)
I'll also save time at the end for general Q&A about music theory questions that people may have. I don't anticipate the clinic taking more than 60-90 minutes.
Hope to see you there!
Paul

I know I'm not really a JT'er, but I believe in live and let live, so I totally concur with Thelma Lou. I just thought I'd throw out there that things could be a WHOLE hell of a lot worse around here- just in general, and I try to practice gratitude every day. I was living in Africa before here, and the fact is, if we can be safe from war, environmental catastrophe, hunger, capricious and dangerous authorities (like, they will kill you or throw you into a dark hole of a jail for life, not just give you a ticket), religious persecution, etc, etc, we are doing better than the vast majority of our fellow world citizens. I'm not saying we should be happy with just freedom from these things, but we should be grateful- and that will generally color our attitude otherwise.

I am really getting concerned now....X-C ski trainers are not allowed on the roads (what about some of us who walk/jog/run the road at times w/ dogs O-My, who may have to poooo???? are we going to get hauled in?,,,,think about it folks, please.) That is the CU Ski Team or LERT training, I am pretty sure...why else would they do it. We are getting so possesive of "the State of Colorado's roadways". I have lived in JimTown for 30+ years and accepted the fact that we are blessed to live here and am not surprised that it is a destination for allot of people....Connie Carpenter wanabees (in spandex) ski trainers...up-hill is better exercise than down....joggers w/dogs etc. Harley riders...nananana..nobody talks about the Mtn Bike Trails that have been accessed.... It was not a big problem until this past year or so. I don't know what changed....(QT?...forum to bitch and moan...?) I moved up here to get away from the Boulder mentality...not relocate it. I know allot of riders who cruise our/their state's roadways and suggest that they mind their manners 'cause there are "Hillbillies" up here who aren't always nice. For the record...I proudly refer to myself as a JimTown Hillbilly. I have to believe that our state and federal government have bigger fish to fry than these issues. It's your/our/my tax dollars that pay for "all the BS" can't we move on to more important issues now? The QT has provided us with a forum and hopefully a progressibe focus...not just a "gossip/bitch venue" which is a waste of everybody's time. God Bless..........I love JimTown and it's commUNITY!

There is a great option for rants and raves: craigslist. There are TONS of people there that have very strong opinions about the whole cycling issue: both mountain and plains people. There are also cyclists there with whom you can argue. The problem with this issue is that nobody really wants to compromise, and they are always asking the other side to take the initial step (dispite who may be wrong in the beginning). I have my own opinion regarding the whole issue, but in the end we all have to live together no matter how we feel. We all have our priorties. Are cyclist-related frustrations worth moving away from such a beautiful area and having a completely different way of life? For me they aren't, so I remain in the mountains.

Hi past trick or treaters: Sorry for the late posting - A very cute knitted pumpkin hat was placed atop my wooden gate in from of my home (second house on right as you head down lower main). I've left it there in case the owner was walking by and could just claim it - but alas it remains. Give me a call and I'll find a way to get it back to you. 303/664-1391. Have a beautiful day! ced

Jyoti (or any one else feeling the same) I'm not trying to run anyone off or disuade anyone from posting about town issues, I'm only requesting that we keep things as civil and un-anonymous as possible here. I enjoy debate and comment as much as anyone but when it starts to feel as if its becoming just a place for ranting or unresolvable questions then it looses its joy fast. I don't know how many have tried to spread the word of any event or issue around a small community in today's world, but the QT is an incredibly effective and efficient way to communicate in this town. I'd really like to see it remain that and not become exclusively a home for a select few to bicker or argue. I know that people have already abandoned this forum for various reasons, I'm confident in the QT's potential however and hope that we can avoid losing too many other people due to the tone of the forum.

Hollis--they'll be burning slash piles and possibly today where there is still a fair amount of snow. It all depends on the wind that is picking up. I'll have more information in about an hour (9:30 am). You can also call Dave Buchanan, Assistant Fire Management Officer/Boulder Ranger District at 303-541-2518.

I can only assume the post in question has been removed. Considering it may be my post anyone was referring to I re-read and found no swear words or other truly offensive words. Many people who are concerned about this issue were not at said meeting and thought they would appreciate an update, since I do not often see them in person (Nancy E. for one). I also know I DON'T stand alone in my perspective as I have spoken to many who agree but who may not have the guts to speak up.
I thought I stated clearly that at the basis of outrage is the fear of loss of life, whether cyclist, motorcyclist, or auto driver. Removing unsafe, and dangerous actions, laws and habits is CRUCIAL to saving a life and should never be ignored. I would question those willing to drop an issue where lives can easily be lost or people seriously injured.
So I ask again, "What's WRONG with single file?" I will continue to work for safety and reason in our canyon in hopes of saving a life.

David, you're in a difficult position as the moderator of this post, and I truly appreciate all you do. Also, thanks for being part of the Working Group. I think you are all making incredibly important progress, and appreciated the forum to add my own ideas (which I believe were reasoned and appropriate). Your post scared me though!! I considered never responding again on the QT, and will still hold that as a possibility. I agree there have been rants, and one post in particular that was out of line in the past week. Someone responded to the post and the postee quickly returned to civility. In my experience the QT is able to monitor itself for the most part.
The cyclist issue brought out so many last summer that are otherwise quiet here on the QT, and I appreciated all the dialogue, whether I agreed with it or not. David K, I always appreciate dialoging with you, and almost always laugh at your humor (I still have a memory of you being trapped between a mama bear and her two cubs... I laughed so hard the way you described the encounter). I appreciate almost all of the posts, and the courage it takes to have a public voice. Now that it's almost winter and the cyclist issue is in the background, there only a few of us left (on both sides of the issue). Being labeled as "vitriolic hystrionics" that are hijacking the QT seems a little over the top to me. I know the dialogue is uncomfortable sometimes, but if the QT is to be anything but a surface dialogue, then we need to be willing to feel uncomfortable from time to time... to let some offer ideas, some express frustration, and others rant. The only boundaries I'd like to see are rage and name-calling. Hopefully this circle is big enough to hold the rest.
My 2 cents for now. I'll see how it goes from here.

Ok with bikes. Just a bit curious about x-country training skis. Are they legal on the road? I ask because I came upon a group of eight of them a few days ago (maybe Sunday) on the way down. Given the wide stance, each skier needed half the lane (the middle half). And unfortunately…, they were all in a flat spot :-O

As I said to the group last night, riding the canyon has become so unsafe I'm considering moving down the mountain (a current past time is perusing the Sunday classifieds). That's how important this issue is to me, and that's why I've taken the time and effort to post.

I've been reluctant to get involved in the bicycle discussion for various reasons but feel like I need to finally comment on the topic and how it's obviously started to turn some folks off to the QT of late, myself included. I also feel that it's bogging down this cool place to communicate with your neighbors.
First off, I was a member of the afore mentioned Working Group which I believe has done some pretty good work on a difficult subject. Thanks to those that came to the meeing last night. I think that with an exception or two, those attending would say that most ideas and concerns were well represented. Bicycles in the canyon obviously affect us all but I believe that most have learned to live with this reality as an inconvenience at worst. That this subject has made a few so very angry and obsessive seems very counter productive to me. None of the extreme suggestions are going to happen such as banning cyclists, licensing them, making them take classes, etc. You're dreaming to think that's going to happen in this county or political climate, and besides that's way beyond the purvue or power of this group. It felt like the goal of everyone involved in this was to try and work on compromise, accomodation, and a general goal of increasing safety and courtesy in the canyon for all concerned. From my perspective, we will have accomplished most of what is possible if we can do that. There's still plenty of time and opportunity to bring ideas and thought on proposals to the Working Group, the County, the Sheriff, Jonathan, the Town, etc. Constructive ideas are always welcome.
Then to this subject on the QT, those that are sitting behind you keyboards getting wound up, angrier and angrier, louder and louder, PLEASE CHILL OUT! And take it elsewhere, I beg you! We've heard it. We're tired of it. As the "administrator" of this board, I'm uncertain as to how to address issues such as this or other volitile subjects. I do not want the responsibility or obligation of monitoring and subjectively editing or banning users. I really don't. Generally I hear great things about the usefulness of the QT, but increasingly I'm hearing really negative things about what people are reading or choosing not to read. There's been a really angry tone that is just inappropriate for a public and open forum like this. I'm going to be really sorry to see a widescale abondoning of this forum due to the vitriolic and ugly posting that get slapped up here. While I welcome and invite all sorts of discussion I'm really sorry to see this become a place for the spouters to carry on with abandon. Please be respectful of everyone that chooses to participate on the QT.
For those that want to rant and rave or talk about specific subjects ad nauseum, or just want to do their own thing, anyone can start their own Bulletin Board, and I invite you to do that. Corey K suggested the idea. I even set one up a year ago or so regarding another controversial issue but it never took off. The down side is getting the critical mass to participate to make it useful. And I have no problem with this QT being used for all kinds of subjects, just as it has been today, I think that's exactly what it's for. All I ask of everyone posting, #1: Read your post over before you send it, every time. #2: Would you want your mom to read what you're writing? Your kid? #3: Relax, everyone should be so lucky to live in a place that so many other people want to visit and gaulk at.
And with that, I'm done. Let's play nice. I'll be sorry if I kick this all off again when we've had almost 10 messages off of the Bike topic.

It just occurred to me that there is a way to make another Q.T. page devoted to whatever subject you want. I don't know how to do it, but I do know that there is a page for JAM related topics, and I suspect there are other pages for which I do not have the URLs.
I propose that the people who would like to continue the bicyclist/auto/canyon/portapotty discussion, simply create a page for that forum and invite everyone who wishes to participate...then have at it!
If fact, we can create a number of pages for various themes (rants, free stuff, pet health questions, etc.) and have the Q.T. administrator put a list of links at the top of this page...in the blank space under the "Welcome To..." text.
Let's not create a situation where more animosity is generated between our own Jimtowners!
That's my 2˘.

Jyoti, you did read my tone correctly - I decided to post after trying to find Lisa's post with the link to the animal poison control hotline after my dog ingested medication that could have made her really sick. I had to page through a bunch of posts from 5 people - several of which are over 3 paragraphs long. It was frustrating and the energy of all that conflict disturbed me. Granted, many of the posts were diplomatically worded, but there is definitely a lot of negative energy even in those posts. (Luckily, Lisa was available by phone and my dog is fine. Just in case anybody besides me cares about that.)
Bottom line, I speak only for myself. I really am sick and tired of the same few people ranting about this subject. I feel that the QT has been hijacked by people's aggressive, angry or sarcastic posts and I don't like it. Free speech is free speech and nobody has to stop talking or posting about it because I'm sick and tired of it, but that is how I feel. Call it aggressive if you will, but my post was born of that frustration.

What disturbs me regarding the cyclists is that people (auto) won't tag behind a cyclist until its safe to pass....they swing around the cyclist and many times into the oncoming lane pushing the person in that lane to swerve. It's happened to me twice now. That's totally dangerous and there's going to be a nasty crash because of that aspect alone. The more bikes the most possibility of unfortunates like this. I do stand on this...not everyone can have everything they want all the time....SOMEONE has to take no....can you say no to anyone for anything anymore without someone sueing or yelling discrimination or intolerance or whatever. I think we've crossed over in crazy J'townians. We're going to have to deal with it...cyclists are special interest. They always get they're way.

The cycle meeting last night consisted of a "working group" which I thought was supposed to be bi-partisan, actually consisted of 15 members only THREE of whom did NOT ride a bicycle at all and NONE of those three live in a mountain town (one from Boulder, two from Lyons). So, this was really a group OF cyclist, BY cyclists, FOR cyclists. This reflects the comments I heard from "regular" folks (non-cyclists, mountain residents, auto drivers) that we are NOT being heard and feel ignored. I also got the feeling a vast majority of the anger was really rooted in a terrifying fear that one of us may hit/run over a cyclist through no fault of our own, and because we are human and DO care, we would feel heavy hearted and guilty for life, if such an event occurred. NO ONE WANTS to hit a cyclist but many feel it is not just possible but likely, due to cyclists riding habits/behaviors.
The overall "result" of the meeting felt decidedly "weighted" on the side of cyclists, seeking how all other users can further "provide" or "serve" or make more "convenient" the ride/experience of cyclists and NOTHING to make better, easier, more enjoyable for motorists. For instance, welcome signs at the Greenbriar for cyclists, portopotties for cyclists, paving over the town park for cyclists while removing grassy areas for residents to play with their dogs or children. None of the group members came up with options that would benefit drivers such as limiting the number of races per season, removing signs placed for races after the race is over, requiring safety classes similar to an Abate class for cyclists, or encouraging single file despite the law. Some laws are NOT good. It used to be legal to have slaves, that doesn't make it a good or right idea. All of these amenities for cyclists are of course proposed to be paid for by ALL, NOT by cycle clubs, cycle permit fees, etc..
An old guy who spoke at the end said it all when he said "What's WRONG with single file?" None of the cyclists could answer because there is NO REASON why cyclists shouldN'T ride single file, outside the white line. Just because they're not required to, doesN'T make it a bad idea. In fact it's a very SMART idea and poses no inconvenience to cyclists as far as I can see, unless there's gravel or sand in the shoulder. It would solve ALL problems, animosity, lack of safety, lack of room, no meetings required, no cost involved (except to add shoulder where there isn't one), and is just plain, good common sense. So I ask again, what's WRONG with single file?????

I just want to support Nancy's message. Not sure why we think legislation is the answer to all of our problems. Nothing wrong with "live and let live" as the answer. I think we need to ask ourselves if this is first of all REALLY a problem? Secondly, if this is a problem why? Are we annoyed that our commute takes an extra minute? Are we really concerned about the safety of the bicyclists? When we had a single file law, I didn't see any difference in cyclist behavior. We allow anyone in our society to ride a bike and do we really want to start tacking on rules to these kinds of pursuits? We are the ones with the tons of steel cruising through the canyon and its our ass--whether a law supports the cyclist or not--when someone dies. We all need to be careful going around corners to watch out for deer, boulders, 10 year olds crossing the road, or arrogant bicyclists riding 2 abreast. Can we get back to discussing dog shit again? That was fun.

I attended the meeting tonight and learned a few things:
1) Jonathan is an excellent mediator and is in the right profession 2) There is no single file law under any circumstance in Colorado as it was overturned with the recent legislation. Per Sheriff Pelle it is even legal to ride two abreast around blind curves 3) Sheriff Pelle is trying to get a law passed for Boulder County that would require single file in certain situations (e.g. around blind curves)
There's still much to be discussed. I hope Nancy's post doesn't stop the conversation (Nancy, I experienced your words as aggressive, which I doubt was your intent). Things have heated up because the new legislation makes it more unsafe to drive the canyon.

I, for one, am tired of the vitriolic hystrionics about the road use issue. Neither resident car drivers nor cyclists are going to stop using the public roadway, and any proposed solutions or potential mitigation ideas that come from the task force (thank you to all the participants for your efforts) will be embraced by some and not by others. Can we just chill out a little? Live and let live? The traffic has been pretty intense for the past several years, but not such a hot topic. The moment there was a piece of legislation that addressed the issue, it pushed everybody's buttons. It seems to have actually made us (including me) less tolerant of a situation we have lived with pretty peacefully for a very long time.
This is not to say that I don't think the task force should continue to look at the potential for better communications and to be proactive in representing Jamestown residents - both the motorists and the cyclists. But hey, let's not let this issue divide our commUNITY. It's still a pretty terrific place to live - would you want to live anywhere else? (BTW whenever I'm friendly to the cyclists, they're friendly in return - we're all just human beings living on the same planet, after all.) So there's my 2 cents' worth.

BOULDER RANGER DISTRICT OPEN HOUSE
On Wednesday, November 4, 2009 from 4-7 PM the Boulder Ranger District will be having an Open House to unveil their motor vehicle use map that shows the routes on the forest lands that can be traveled by vehicles. On this map there is a new route that will be open around the south end of Gold Lake to connect to 102J, opening that area to OHV use. Please try to stop in at the open house and voice your concern about this new route and ask how it got on the map. - James Creek Watershed Initiative

A few observations. ALL the cyclists were IN the road today due to a very thick layer of sand in the shoulder/bike lane. I have already written to road maintenance authorities about this including failing to sweep after mowing (dried grass clippings can be very slippery) and failure to remove road/sign garbage like arrows/directions for a cycle road race after the race is finished (I suggested within 48 hours after completion of race). One of the reasons for frustration is that despite all these discussions and working groups and arguments, NOTHING HAS CHANGED. Gravel is not being removed more frequently or decidedly after a snowstorm for one example. On O'B's statements, yes, ALL users of roads should be charged/registered. But better yet, people should use the giant brains we were blessed with. There are appropriate places for all manner of things. If one wishes to go cross-country skiing, there are cross-country TRAILS MEANT for this activity. If one wishes to go downhill skiing, then visit an appropriate ski area. If one wishes to go hiking, the National Forest has many established walking trails for this purpose. It is more acceptable to wear jeans and swear in a local blue-collar type bar or pub, and less so in a five star foo-foo restaurant.
Finally, riding your mountain bike through others yards is illegal and is called trespassing. My parents taught me it was both polite, legal, and respectful to ASK PERMISSION FIRST. When you do this, you can rest assured you won't be shot at because you got proper authority/permission to be there. Even better, you will earn respect for yourself and maintain good neighbor relations, rather than causing a problem you'll have to fix later. ALWAYS ask FIRST, not afterwards!!
There are so many ridiculous activities going on IN the road that it seems car drivers at this point are being discriminated against as the ONLY users, singled out and required to have permits/licenses/registrations and is likely one reason for all the animosity. I see nothing wrong with "separate areas for separate (and SAFE) uses."

At The Merc we strive not to discriminate- (which should be apparent on any given afternoon) I don't know of there being a bathroom problem, or any other real problems in regard to cyclists at The Merc- save a little rudeness from time to time, which we have gotten from motorists and even locals as well. We provide water and facilities in order to be friendly, and in order to bring all types into the cafe. On a personal note- I have found it helpful to remember that it is the behavior that is offensive and needs to be changed, not the actual people. I have had conversations with friendly cyclists who had no idea of either this town's irritation with them, nor what the "cyclist's bill of rights" even is. They were just people out to exercise and enjoy nature in the canyon we all share. After a discussion of the issues, they left educated in regard to our frustrations. I'm glad and encouraged that Johnathon and the rest of the mediators have come up with suggestions. I read through the agenda and thought there were some great ideas. I also personally think that the "cyclist's bill of rights" is absurd. I brought a petition down to the Governor's office to ask him to veto- but that doesn't mean I want to bar every spandex wearing person from having breakfast or using our bathroom. It helps our little business and SOME of them are even nice.

Starting disclaimer: Cyclists have a right to use the canyon, and I admire their sport, and (cheerfully+) share the road with them.
As DavidK points out, Jamestown is, unfortunately, a destination. I'm just suggesting that we do not encourage it. I do believe that having public facilities would encourage more cyclists to come here to use the bathroom. Truly, I do. DavidK, I (respectfully, and in a spirit of public cooperation and general good) don't want to be forced subsidize your sport, or anyone elses. Let them pay for it themselves. A toilet use fee at the Merc would be reasonable for residents and non-residents alike. I'm certain that when someone was short of change, the enlightened management at the merc would let them slide, or put it on the book. Let Jamestown tax money, and any revenues we collect externally go only to Jamestown road and water improvement. In fact, that might make a nice ballot initiative.

David, is it possible that we can be a friendly mountain town and angry about the legislation at the same time, and thus not inclined to feel welcoming at the moment? I don't appreciate being lumped into your "angry rural motorist" category. A little anger is justified in my view (not rage and name-calling), as this legislation went too far and is lop-sided in adding rights for cyclists, making it unsafe for all of us. I hope the meeting tomorrow goes well, and plan to be there with constructive ideas. Hope to see you there! The real work will be getting the legislation changed, or new legislation written for canyons. The legislation is titled "Bicycle Safety Bill". We need a "Canyon Safety Bill".

Three cheers for a Welcome to Jamestown sign! Three cheers for a public toilet and perhaps a water spigot/sink! Two cheers for cycling signage. Jamestown is already a cycling destination and always will be. NOT having a Welcome to Jamestown sign doesn't seem to scare away visitors, so why not just be friendly? Frankly, everyone that I've ever met from anywhere in the Front Range who rides a road bike already knows about Jamestown and has ridden here before. So, in my humble guess-timation, I think a Welcome sign does nothing but show we're a friendly mountain town - not a bunch of angry rural motorists who would like nothing more than the rest of the Front Range go away and have the public roadways and lands all to ourselves. And again, in my humble guess-timation, I think that a clean public toilet and water spigot would not attract hords of new cyclists (hey guys - let's go ride to Jamestown - I hear they have nice bathrooms!). If anything, public toilets and a water spigot might reduce the strain on the Merc's septic and staff. And, being that the Merc is indeed a private business, and not a community center, it seems like they carry the town's burden. Joey/Rainbow, please throw in your thoughts. Do hords of cyclists use the WC and not buy anything? Or does the WC provide customers? Hurray for the QT, free speech and not saying anything on here that you wouldn't freely say in public!

My heart goes out to the families in our community who have recently lost their beloved pets. I would like to help address some concerns brought up on the QT and through phone calls and emails I have received during the last several days about the possibility that animals in Jamestown have been poisoned. Right now I would be hesitant to jump to this conclusion. I am familiar with the illnesses of several of the animals in question and they all seemed to present very different types of illness affecting a variety of organ systems. Out of respect to the families who have lost pets I would like to leave it at that without going into more detail. I would, however, like to briefly mention a couple of the most common poisons that could be ingested by accident or unfortunately, due to malicious intent. 1. Rat poison. This is an anticoagulant that causes internal bleeding. Signs of rat poisoning are labored breathing, pale gums, and a pet that is acting very ill (lethargic, not eating) Cats that eat rodents that have ingested rat poison can also be affected. This type of poisoning is very treatable, especially if caught within 24 hours of when the poison has been ingested. 2. Antifreeze. This contains ethylene glycol, which is toxic to the kidneys. Unfortunately pets don't usually exhibit signs until damage has been done. Signs of antifreeze poisoning include increased thirst, increased urination, acting painful, lethargy, vomiting, refusal of food, and dehydration. Please clean up any antifreeze spills as soon as you notice them. Antifreeze poisoning is treatable, but prognosis depends on how early it is detected. 3. Toxic mushrooms are much less common, and when I spoke with an internist at the Boulder Emergency Clinic last summer, he told me he sees a few cases each year, most commonly from the Evergreen/Conifer area. Mushrooms can either affect the neurological system, in which case signs would be incoordination in walking, head tilt, behavior changes, or less commonly cause severe acute liver failure. There are many other types of poisons including some very common household items, so for more information I recommend visiting the ASPCA poison control website at: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control and bookmarking that page. They also have a 24 hour poison control hotline which is 888-426-4435. I urge you to contact me (303-718-2419) or your veterinarian of choice as soon as possible if you have any concerns about your pet. While I don't think anyone is poisoning the pets of Jamestown, there is no harm in taking extra precautions and being watchful since we cannot know for sure at this time. I hope this has been helpful.

Looking for a good home. My son has an 11 month old puppy that he can no longer keep to due housing regulations where he currently lives. The dog is named Matco and is a boxer/pit bull mix (he thinks). Matco is very good with children and has been around kids since he was born. He is not an aggressive dog, on the contrary, he is almost too affectionate. He is very used to being in a kennel. If you are interested in giving Matco a good home call Aren at 72o 448 69two8.

On behalf of Jonathan:
Subject: Boulder County Mountain Canyon - Cyclist/Motorist Working Group Date: November 1, 2009
This message is to clarify the purpose of the Boulder County Canyon Cyclist/Motorist Working Group and to encourage participation in the rescheduled public meeting on Tuesday, November 3 at 5:00 pm.
Background An increase in cycling along the narrow and winding mountain canyon roads has caused tension between cyclists, motorists and mountain community residents. Some mountain residents and others who use the roads are frustrated by cyclists, while some cyclists feel unwelcome or unsafe on the roads. The Boulder County Mountain Canyon-Cyclist-Motorist Working Groups charge has been to develop practical ideas to address these concerns. The Working Group is comprised of community and cycling representatives who were identified by the County Transportation and Sheriffs Offices and by the interest groups themselves.
The Working Group, convened by the County Transportation and Sherriffs Offices, met three times in August and September in an effort to identify ways to enhance cooperation and improve safety on the Boulder-area canyon roads. The focus of the problem-solving effort has been to identify strategies that the mountain communities (Jamestown and Ward), the cycling community and the County could implement and that would benefit the situation. Numerous ideas and proposals were discussed that were beyond the authority of the agencies and communities involved. The Working Group set aside these alternatives to concentrate on those methods within the authority of the group.
Recommendations and Public Meeting The draft recommendations physical improvements, outreach and education and law enforcement along with the overall process overview will be discussed at a rescheduled public meeting on Tuesday, November 3 at the Altona Grange Hall (39th Street & Nelson Road Boulder County) beginning at 5 pm. You are encouraged to attend to learn more about the process and to provide input on the recommendations. We hope you will attend the meeting.
Meeting Format Open House: 5:00-5:45 Presentation: 5:45-6:15 Discussion: 6:15-7:15 Open House: 7:15-8:00
Sincerely,
Jonathan Bartsch CDR Associates Working Group Facilitator

David M's hypothesis on poison is not a bad one - recently, I had a healthy young cat get deathly ill very quickly, and barely recover. As much as I try, the rascal sometimes gets out of the house and goes hunting. The poison hypothesis seems like it might hold some water.

I'm all for Colleen having her sport, and security and safety should be paramount for all roadway users. I deeply want to avoid getting into an insurance lawsuit and criminal charges from an interaction with the spandex-clad tribe. Their lawyers and lobbyists are the best!
Colleen, it escapes me how not having a Welcome sign, restrooms, and a campsite would "Penalize the residents who choose a healthy recreation such as bicycling".
By virtue of living in Jamestown, USA, your carbon footprint is big. Claiming that not driving to a gym is somehow a mark of civic virtue is rather far-fetched. You do plenty of things that are full of civic virtue, notably on JVFD EMT and the Watershed, and I applaud your contribution.
I don't want our trustees doing anything to make Jamestown a "destination", and that includes spending taxpayer money on signage, camping, and especially restrooms / portapotties. How about spending our money on water systems and roads for our benefit. What's next - a taxpayer funded sports arena?

As we've seen from the difficult postings on the QT, there have been a number of animal deaths lately around here. There were also a few otherwise healthy cats that died that were not mentioned. There is some concern that someone may be using poison in town that is getting to our pets. Might someone be poisoning mice/rodents which are then eaten by a cat or dog? Another very common accidental poisoning can occur with spilled or discarded anti-freeze, it's deadly.
Please be extremely careful if you're using any kinds of poisons in town. Of course the pet deaths would be an accidental side effect but there may be some poisoning happening that someone's not even aware of. Let's hope to avoid any more unexplained pet deaths.

I have lived in Jamestown for 30 years and just started bicycling the canyon this past summer. I am one of the newer less skilled bicyclist that you may see in the canyon. Since I work at a home office I ride my bike to get my cardiovascular workout without having to go downtown to the gym, which in fact would increase my carbon footprint. Going uphill I ride in the shoulder of the road and going downhill I ride in both the shoulder and within 2-3 feet of the road depending on the safety of the shoulder. Please be mindful of the residents of the canyon that are bicyclist. Those of us that choose this sport to stay healthy and/or drive to and from work to decrease their carbon footprint.
Also, I work in small rural towns thoughout Colorado. Many of these towns have public restrooms and also free public campsites in their small town parks. I would like to see a WELCOME TO JAMESTOWN sign upon entering the town. This would signify that visitors know that they are in a town.We need to educate the folks that are the problem ones, not penalize the residents who choose a health recreation such as bicycling.

For Sally Rose and Mandy Sleeping in the Forest
I thought the earth remembered me, she took me back so tenderly, arranging her dark skirts, her pockets full of lichens and seeds. I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed, nothing between me and the white fire of the stars but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths among the branches of the perfect trees. All night I heard the small kingdoms breathing around me, the insects, and the birds who do their work in the darkness. All night I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling with a luminous doom. By morning I had vanished at least a dozen times into something better.

Sally Rose will be laid to rest today at noon up at Rob Koehler's land on Balarat Road. If anyone would like to attend, give me a call at (3o3) 545-55o2 and I will give directions. Our deepest thanks to Buddy and Rob and ALL of the friends who will be helping with this hard, incredibly sad task.
Sally was SO LOVED BY SO MANY in this commUNITY that her KID friends have asked if we will have a funeral for her. These kids grew up with Sally and I respect their need for closure, so we will have a memorial service in Jamestown's Little Park soon for everyone who ever loved and lost their dear, dear pets. All of Sally's doggie friends will be welcome too. More info to follow...

I wonder if a miracle happened here in this issue of locals, cyclists, cars, flatlanders, that we would actually need another issue to complain about..fight over..disagree..argue. I believe that as individuals we either accept current issues, solve them together..(which in this matter could be impossible) and all go home happy. I truly am an outsider, I am an imported Coloradian and i believe that this land in which we walk upon at one time had no claim, no ownership. In fact that same sort of bias attitude is what pushed local natives far away on a patch of goverment crap land called reservation. I shudder when cyclists waver in the road, block me down the canyon, have a very ignorant attitude to me attempting to go to work. As I am sure the same feeling happens when a very crazy driver trys to run them over...not all of either parties have this approach. I do not cycle, I drive, but issues between two separate folks such as this can only find resolution over a meeting. calm..not heated..not blaming. I have found some times to be grateful for what we do have can assist in issues as these. just noticing a pattern of defense..blame and no resolving matters. as adults, I am sure in school they taught us something.

Dear Jimtowners,
The vitrolics i have read here for the past few days about them and us and the flatlanders and the "locals" sounds hateful and not at all like the pple i know. The solution to this problem will come from quiet talk and give and take between the two communities.....not name calling and asumptions about the relative wealth of each another, or their inherent goodness or badness. There are certain leaders in the bike community and leaders in the Jamestown community who understand that a fair solution to the problem is in everyones best interest. I am one if those "evil" flatland pple, but i dont feel like i am a bad person due to a difference in elevation. Please try and refrain from the name calling and try not to put ur two cents in if it is not part of the solution. Stumpski

O'B, thanks for your level-headed posts. I apologize for and regret any of my words that were incendiary. The problem can be boiled down to one fine point... humans bumping into other humans... literally and figuratively as you unfortunately learned the hard way. Driving a vehicle or riding a bike up and down the canyon has the potential to bring out the best and worst in all of us on any given day. Let's try to bring our best to the meeting Tuesday, with constructive ideas and concern for all involved.
Along those lines, I read your post about the new legislation (thanks for copying it in entirety). I think most of us assumed (I know I did) that the new lane in Lefthand was a "bike" lane which allowed all the privileges of the legislation. If it is indeed only a wider shoulder, then wouldn't single file still apply in the canyon? If so, then why was the sign indicating "single file rule applies" that was once at the entrance to the canyon removed when the legislation was passed? Downhill is another issue, but at least half the problem would be solved if you are correct. Jyoti
P.S. My posts are from a Mac, which doesn't seem to interface well with the QT (lots of spacing issues). Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Yeah, it works both ways. I like to drive the speed limit and I get run off the road. When I try to point out the rules to cyclist, I usually get the finger. I'm not directing any animosity towards you and please feel safe w/ me on the road. I'm gonna wait and see myself. This whole mess consumes way too much energy.

Hey Hollis, likewise for the cyclists regarding the gauntlet. The indifference exists on both sides. I've been held up too by cyclists, and on those occasions I've taken the time to say, "hey, you still need to ride single file when there is traffic". There aren't any easy answers, and I don't think anyone will like the outcome that much. The county went through this years ago, and the problem was identified then, people driving too fast in the canyons and cyclists not riding where they should in relation to the road/traffic. I appreciate the effort that the committee is making, so I've adopted a wait and see approach. That and I ride the mountain bike far more now, after being the unfortunate recipient of misdirected animosity once, I'll avoid, but I know there will be a target on my back in the canyon.

Those rules and regulations look like something one would be required to pass a test and be licensed for. A drivers license is a privilege not a right. Sorry O'B nothing personal, it's just the volume of cyclist and the apparent perceived indifference in attitude exhibited towards vehicles time and time again tends to wear everyone's patients thin. Cyclist aren't evil. It's just that they sure are in the way a lot. Most days the drive is okay, some days its a gauntlet. These are the days that really stick in your craw! If there were some way of managing the volume..... Like I said before, No one moved to Jamestown so they could drive in traffic. I have to plan my trips down the canyon usually very early or late just to avoid the bike traffic. Most children wouldn't ride their bikes the way SOME of the cyclist do.

Hey All the USFS has finally decided to make the Multi Use area map open to review by the public. This is a very important meeting! If you can't make it, tell someone who can. Please see below for details.
Dear Boulder Quiet Use Folks, The long awaited Boulder Ranger District Motorized Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) will be released Wed, November 4 at an open house from 3 - 7.
The MVUM does not make new decisions as to which Forest Service trails will be motorized or not, but rather compiles previous decisions where motorized trail designations were made. Unauthorized, user-created trails will not appear on the map; and in some cases motorized routes may appear that we, the Quiet Use Community, were not aware of.
There is suspense on both sides about a handful of routes that we want closed and they want open, and that have ambiguous documentation.
Please come to the Open House if possible to be a Quiet Use presence and to learn how the Forest Service made these decisions>
MVUM OPEN HOUSE Boulder Ranger District US Forest Service Wed., Nov 4, 3 - 7 PM Yarmouth and 28th On the east side of 28th across from Yarmouth
It is important that people weigh in who know first hand some of the trail systems in the district. Can you pass this on to such people, or give me their names?
The MVUM has a lot to do with how our mountain landscape will look, feel, and sound in the future.

Here is the text of the statute. Take a look at section 6 subsection a and b riding abreast:
from Colorado Statutes : TITLE 42 VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC : REGULATION OF VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC : ARTICLE 4 REGULATION OF VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC : PART 14 OTHER OFFENSES : 42-4-1412. Operation of bicycles and other human-powered vehicles.
(1) Every person riding a bicycle shall have all of the rights and duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle under this article, except as to special regulations in this article and except as to those provisions which by their nature can have no application. Said riders shall comply with the rules set forth in this section and section 42-4-221, and, when using streets and highways within incorporated cities and towns, shall be subject to local ordinances regulating the operation of bicycles as provided in section 42-4-111.
(2) It is the intent of the general assembly that nothing contained in House Bill No. 1246, enacted at the second regular session of the fifty-sixth general assembly, shall in any way be construed to modify or increase the duty of the department of transportation or any political subdivision to sign or maintain highways or sidewalks or to affect or increase the liability of the state of Colorado or any political subdivision under the "Colorado Governmental Immunity Act", article 10 of title 24, C.R.S.
(3) No bicycle shall be used to carry more persons at one time than the number for which it is designed or equipped.
(4) No person riding upon any bicycle shall attach the same or himself or herself to any motor vehicle upon a roadway.
(5) (a) ANY PERSON OPERATING A BICYCLE UPON A ROADWAY AT LESS THAN THE NORMAL SPEED OF TRAFFIC SHALL RIDE IN THE RIGHT-HAND LANE, SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
(I) IF THE RIGHT-HAND LANE THEN AVAILABLE FOR TRAFFIC IS WIDE ENOUGH TO BE SAFELY SHARED WITH OVERTAKING VEHICLES, A BICYCLIST SHALL RIDE FAR ENOUGH TO THE RIGHT AS JUDGED SAFE BY THE BICYCLIST TO FACILITATE THE MOVEMENT OF SUCH OVERTAKING VEHICLES UNLESS OTHER CONDITIONS MAKE IT UNSAFE TO DO SO.
(II) A BICYCLIST MAY USE A LANE OTHER THAN THE RIGHT-HAND LANE WHEN: (A) PREPARING FOR A LEFT TURN AT AN INTERSECTION OR INTO A PRIVATE ROADWAY OR DRIVEWAY; (B) OVERTAKING A SLOWER VEHICLE; OR (C) TAKING REASONABLY NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID HAZARDS OR ROAD CONDITIONS.
(III) UPON APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WHERE RIGHT TURNS ARE PERMITTED AND THERE IS A DEDICATED RIGHT-TURN LANE, A BICYCLIST MAY RIDE ON THE LEFT-HAND PORTION OF THE DEDICATED RIGHT-TURN LANE EVEN IF THE BICYCLIST DOES NOT INTEND TO TURN RIGHT. (b) A BICYCLIST SHALL NOT BE EXPECTED OR REQUIRED TO: (I) RIDE OVER OR THROUGH HAZARDS AT THE EDGE OF A ROADWAY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO FIXED OR MOVING OBJECTS, PARKED OR MOVING VEHICLES, BICYCLES, PEDESTRIANS, ANIMALS, SURFACE HAZARDS, OR NARROW LANES; OR (II) RIDE WITHOUT A REASONABLE SAFETY MARGIN ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE ROADWAY. (c) A PERSON OPERATING A BICYCLE UPON A ONE-WAY ROADWAY WITH TWO OR MORE MARKED TRAFFIC LANES MAY RIDE AS NEAR TO THE LEFT-HAND CURB OR EDGE OF SUCH ROADWAY AS JUDGED SAFE BY THE BICYCLIST, SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS: (I) IF THE LEFT-HAND LANE THEN AVAILABLE FOR TRAFFIC IS WIDE ENOUGH TO BE SAFELY SHARED WITH OVERTAKING VEHICLES, A BICYCLIST SHALL RIDE FAR ENOUGH TO THE LEFT AS JUDGED SAFE BY THE BICYCLIST TO FACILITATE THE MOVEMENT OF SUCH OVERTAKING VEHICLES UNLESS OTHER CONDITIONS MAKE IT UNSAFE TO DO SO. (II) A BICYCLIST SHALL NOT BE EXPECTED OR REQUIRED TO: (A) RIDE OVER OR THROUGH HAZARDS AT THE EDGE OF A ROADWAY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO FIXED OR MOVING OBJECTS, PARKED OR MOVING VEHICLES, BICYCLES, PEDESTRIANS, ANIMALS, SURFACE HAZARDS, OR NARROW LANES; OR (B) RIDE WITHOUT A REASONABLE SAFETY MARGIN ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE OF THE ROADWAY.
(6) (a) PERSONS RIDING BICYCLES UPON A ROADWAY SHALL NOT RIDE MORE THAN TWO ABREAST EXCEPT ON PATHS OR PARTS OF ROADWAYS SET ASIDE FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF BICYCLES. (b) PERSONS RIDING BICYCLES TWO ABREAST SHALL NOT IMPEDE THE NORMAL AND REASONABLE MOVEMENT OF TRAFFIC AND, ON A LANED ROADWAY, SHALL RIDE WITHIN A SINGLE LANE.
(7) A person operating a bicycle shall keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.
(8) (a) A person riding a bicycle intending to turn left shall follow a course described in sections 42-4-901 (1), 42-4-903, and 42-4-1007 or may make a left turn in the manner prescribed in paragraph (b) of this subsection (8). (b) A person riding a bicycle intending to turn left shall approach the turn as closely as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. After proceeding across the intersecting roadway to the far corner of the curb or intersection of the roadway edges, the bicyclist shall stop, as much as practicable, out of the way of traffic. After stopping, the bicyclist shall yield to any traffic proceeding in either direction along the roadway that the bicyclist had been using. After yielding and complying with any official traffic control device or police officer regulating traffic on the highway along which the bicyclist intends to proceed, the bicyclist may proceed in the new direction. (c) Notwithstanding the provisions of paragraphs (a) and (b) of this subsection (8), the transportation commission and local authorities in their respective jurisdictions may cause official traffic control devices to be placed on roadways and thereby require and direct that a specific course be traveled.
(9) (a) Except as otherwise provided in this subsection (9), every person riding a bicycle shall signal the intention to turn or stop in accordance with the provisions of section 42-4-903; except that a person riding a bicycle may signal a right turn with the right arm extended horizontally. (b) A signal of intention to turn right or left when required shall be given continuously during not less than the last one hundred feet traveled by the bicycle before turning and shall be given while the bicycle is stopped waiting to turn. A signal by hand and arm need not be given continuously if the hand is needed in the control or operation of the bicycle.
(10) (a) A person riding a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian. A person riding a bicycle in a crosswalk shall do so in a manner that is safe for pedestrians. (b) A person shall not ride a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk where such use of bicycles is prohibited by official traffic control devices or local ordinances. A person riding a bicycle shall dismount before entering any crosswalk where required by official traffic control devices or local ordinances. (c) A person riding or walking a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall have all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances, including, but not limited to, the rights and duties granted and required by section 42-4-802. (d) (Deleted by amendment, L. 2005, p. 1353, § 1, effective July 1, 2005.)
(11) (a) A person may park a bicycle on a sidewalk unless prohibited or restricted by an official traffic control device or local ordinance. (b) A bicycle parked on a sidewalk shall not impede the normal and reasonable movement of pedestrian or other traffic. (c) A bicycle may be parked on the road at any angle to the curb or edge of the road at any location where parking is allowed. (d) A bicycle may be parked on the road abreast of another bicycle or bicycles near the side of the road or any location where parking is allowed in such a manner as does not impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic. (e) In all other respects, bicycles parked anywhere on a highway shall conform to the provisions of part 12 of this article regulating the parking of vehicles.
(12) (a) Any person who violates any provision of this section commits a class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense; except that section 42-2-127 shall not apply. (b) Any person riding a bicycle who violates any provision of this article other than this section which is applicable to such a vehicle and for which a penalty is specified shall be subject to the same specified penalty as any other vehicle; except that section 42-2-127 shall not apply.
(13) Upon request, the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction shall complete a report concerning an injury or death incident that involves a bicycle on the roadways of the state, even if such accident does not involve a motor vehicle.
Source: L. 94: Entire title amended with relocations, p. 2395, § 1, effective January 1, 1995. L. 2005: (6)(a)(I), (9)(a), and (10) amended and (13) added, p. 1353, § 1, effective July 1.
Cyclists need to ride single file with following/overtaking traffic. I am grateful for the widened shoulder (it is not a marked bike lane) and the courtesy of those neighbors who wave or encourage. And if you see me mountain biking through your backyard, please don't shoot!

No, but it does allow you to walk, bicycle, roller ski, XC ski, ride a horse, have a cattle drive, operate a farm tractor etc. Should we impose use fees on every possible road user, or just the bicycles?

O'B, the fact that I have a registered car does NOT allow me to use my motorcycle for FREE on roads. EACH vehicle must be registered and insured. So the argument "most cyclists have a car and pay registration" does NOT hold water in my opinion. Especially when use of my motorcycle does NOT require any extra measures like widening the road or creating a special lane for such use. It would make MORE sense if cyclists paid registration and NOT a second vehicle using already existing pavement.

On the matter of the karen s post regarding "our language" count me out. That is not the way I want to represent myself on the qt. Lord knows I know how to cuss. The qt is trying to get more not less readers. I find the use of cussing in any form on the qt inappropriate and think it should be prohibited. Strong opinions, fine, cussing, no. It doesn't take much for any youngster reading such posts to figure out what was intended. Turn your back for a minute or two...
I have been riding a lot this fall, in the canyon, in the mountains, maybe through some of your back yards. I do not feel an urge to void myself or go on any public displays that would make a Greek sculptor blush. I have had the joy of riding and racing a bicycle in our great State. I have had the joy of driving down our plush paved canyon. I have witnessed what you have witnessed, and I am disappointed in both sides.
Hat's off to Jonathon and crew who made the effort I and others suggested this past summer. The roads are public domain. To suggest otherwise is foolish at best, assinine at worst. To suggest that this is a class issue is equal to the roads assertion.
I know of plenty of cyclists who work incredibly hard to achieve the sponsorships they do to be on the equipment they ride, because if they weren't sponsored, they couldn't afford it. Are there wealthy folks who buy expensive bikes, sure. Are there wealthy folks who buy fast expensive cars and drive them fast in the canyon to see how they handle, sure.
I don't think some type of public facility is a bad idea. Think living on Main street on the 4th of July, and then imagine where some of the festive libation ends up. I also don't think the the town should be responsible in any way other than providing an area for the County to erect and service such a station. It would also be a nice comfort for the hikers, equestrians and other users of our fair area.
What I do when I encounter cyclists acting badly is similar to what I do when I encounter drivers acting badly, I talk to them. "Hey-did you know that when a car approaches from behind you're still required to ride single file?" "Hey-did you know that passing on a double yellow line is illegal, regardless of how fast you think your car/motorcycle is?" Usually I get a "sorry!" and they sort themselves out. I've even moved ahead of a group of cyclists and then gotten out. You can also wait at the stop sign if you have the time. They will talk with you there most of the time. I think that time is actually the issue, if the canyon users weren't typically speeding, hey I know I do, they would have the time to wait for an appropriate place to pass, and there are plenty of them.
If you do not get staisfaction, call the Sheriff. Cyclists are slower than cars, so if you get a pretty good description, the SO will likely find them. You can follow them, there is no law against that. The SO likes it if someone is willing to follow-up a complaint rather than a simple contact.
What is disappointing is the vitriol and venom coming forth from people who have been argued to me as decent. I see no decency in the implied comportion of some of our neighbors. Ripping the road is cutting your nose off to spite your face. Voting "them" all out is no real answer either. If the representatives to the committee from Jamestown are board members but do not represent the interest of Jamestown, then there should be a boardmember on the committee. But keep in mind, not everyone in town feels the way that either you or I do.
I suspect that there are very few cyclists who journey to town that do not own an automobile of some variety. They have paid their taxes too. I would hate to be disallowed to drive across this great country because my road money goes to Colorado.
It seems that there are some assumptions about the Merc here. I would allow the new ownership of the Merc to voice her opinion in the matter. If she's OK with the cyclists/equestrians/hikers using her facilities and possibly purchasing something, even if only a gatorade or a candy bar, that's her choice. If someone continues to put out the water buckets, thank you on behalf of every parched human being that needed water.
In the meantime, I hope that folks can set aside their differences. I don't want to be run down by an angry motorist in the canyon any more than I want to be inconvenienced by an inattentive group of cyclists, although the run down hurts more. I was hit in Sunshine canyon 16 years ago when they tried and failed to close that canyon to cyclists by an angry driver. CSP never found them, and I had a partial plate # with description. The vehicle mysteriously "vanished".
Take a deep breath, you're not reaching the offending cyclists through the QT anyway.

And, Jenny, "human beings" don't whip it out in a nice residential neighborhood, don't purposefully ride in the left wheel track refusing to let cars pass, and don't force unsafe, unreasonable and illogical legislation down others throats. Cyclists riding abreast, socializing in the middle of a paved road, acting entitled and more important than anyone else has gotten them the reception they deserve and the resistance they have asked for through their behavior. They are reaping what they have sown! If they want to be welcomed, they have a LOT of manners and consideration to learn, and perhaps completion of a basic course in Physics would help them as well. Two cars each giving 3 foot space in opposite directions=head on collision and deaths. No law can overcome the law of physics! Also, humans have yet to evolve to the point where we have x-ray vision which means it is impossible to see through a 20 story rock on a blind corner to see the cyclist in the middle of the road around the bend...no matter WHAT the law says. Polite, considerate, "human" cyclists, who ride in the bike lane provided for them by registration dollars they DON'T pay, might get a far different response, and might indeed be welcomed.

If cyclists don't like our f***ing language, they can go back to the flatlands where they belong.. mountain life is tough sometimes and tough language goes with that lifestyle.
Plenty of stories have been told of port-o-poties blowing over in the wind we get so often up here. I sure as sh** (pun intended) do NOT intend to help clean up the mess for cyclists benefit.
I also agree if we don't want the canyon clogged with cycles, especially inconsiderate ones, why in the world would we spend what little money the town has to benefit them?????
The Merc could become a "club" with admittance only to those who pay small yearly membership, and can prove local residency. Not likely, but just a thought. I would pay yearly fee for such an arrangement even if I never went in all year. Cyclists don't use the bike rack already there for them, they just pile them up, taking up the only two car spots available for those who usually spend way more money (local getting a burger and beer vs. cyclists using toilet for free or for price of a powerbar). In fact, they take up the road too, not just the parking spots. So why waste money on more bike racks?
If these people have so much money and influence, they can pay for their own da** port-o-potty along with the clean up crew for when 100 MPH winds blow it over, pay for their own bike rack, pay for their own water cooler, cups, trash collector, and water boy to fill it up. Since they save so much money NOT having to register or insure their bikes like all other road users, they should have plenty of money left over to pay for these luxuries other users aren't cry-babying about.

David K, you're right in that it's probably too simplistic to name this as a simply a class issue. I'd direct you to the daily camera "comments" section attached to any article regarding the issue though. You might change your mind and agree it's at least part of the problem. Many of the cyclists who post to these articles talk about mountain people using pretty disparaging language.
That said, I don't mind cyclists using the canyon if they would do so in a way that didn't put lives at risk (David, I'm sure you and other JT cyclists aren't contributing to the problem). I DO mind that many have developed such a powerful lobby they were able to get this legislation passed and we didn't even hear about it until it was on the desk of the governor waiting to be signed. Nancy, doesn't the state senate (where this legislation was passed) go into session every January for 4 months? Wouldn't that be the time to try to get some kind of amendment to the bill? I believe I heard it was Brandon Shaffer who wrote the bill. Does anyone know if that's correct? What role could the state house play, where we have a friend in Claire Levy? Would it be effective to start a petition? I don't know how it all works. Civics 101 lesson anyone?
In the meantime we all need to find a way to get along, and thus the mediation. I can't think of a better person than Jonathan to be leading it. Let's get organized and come out in force on Tuesday evening so we can work on constructive ways to live with this situation until hopefully we can get the legislation changed.
We have a week to brainstorm ideas. Here's one... post signs on blind curves reminding cyclists that two abreast is not allowed around the curve. It could have two stick figure bikers with a line drawn through them and an arrow indicating the direction of the curve. Or how about this... signs at the bottom of the canyon saying two abreast is not recommended unless there is a broken yellow line indicating it's safe to pass. That's basically most of the canyon. After Dory's video I'm having fun picturing the fine residents of Jamestown in bear suits hiding behind trees along the canyon...
but seriously, I support the idea of a port-a-potty or bathroom of some kind. I've passed way too many cyclists using the side of the road, one of whom decided to whip it out right next to our mailboxes on Overland. Needless to say we had words...

First, I think that in mediation the mediator/facilitator is supposed to be neutral. So I don't believe that Jonathan is officially representing the town. And the two town board members say they are participating out of "personal interest." Thus, I'm not sure Jamestown has had an official rep in the group--which disturbs me since we're a major stakeholder. I don't think there's been any ongoing informing of or oversight by our primary representatives, the Town Board.
That said, I commend the Commissioners and the group for trying to do something positive. But I think that the group's suggestions, while they're a good start, are merely a band-aid to the situation. So . .
Second, I think this is really a legislative issue. But the suggestion to vote them all out is impossible--we're a VERY small voting block.
Other than the Public Hearing next week, it's kind of a moot point now for the winter. But I suggest that next season, we approach legislators and:
1. Boil it down to 2-3 specific requests (like asking them to overturn 1. bicycles allowed in the middle of the road and 2. allowing them to ride 2 abreast) instead of just a barrage of angry complaints.
2. Provide some background/"grounding" about our concerns and requests--a small compilation that represents the dangerous/difficult situations we've all encountered--to show that this is truly a safety issue and we're not just coming from NIMBY.
3. Invite them to drive the canyon on a summer Saturday morning--and maybe treat them to brunch at the Merc--so they can experience it for themselves. (I'd be willing to chip into a pot of $$ for this.)
We could also launch a campaign to "try it in the court of public opinion"--but that would only work if we do it from a logical and reasonable perspective, not just griping and complaining as we do on the QT.
As our immediate legislators, I think the Town Board should take the lead on this since it's an issue of residents' safety--at the very least by forming and overseeing a Task Force. But if they're not willing to do that, then I guess we go the grassroots path. It's worked in the past--even helping to elect a president.
[Dory--thanks for the youtube link. Absolutely hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing!]

Dory - that is rather amusing, but no. I did not suggest, nor do I believe, any form of hostility or directed unfriendliness (Jenny's comment related to Ward) is warranted. I only suggest we leave town to serve the members of town - and that would include not pandering to cyclists or intentionally making Jamestown a desirable cycling destination.

I've been asked to share the information below with our community:
Mary Ellen:
Just a quick note to let you know that the fire staff at the US Forest Service anticipates that we'll be burning slash piles west of town on the James Creek Project, perhaps as early as the first of the week on or about November 2nd or 3rd. The actual location is along both sides of Overland Road just below the crest of the hill and Sky Ranch Estates. The recent snow cover (almost too much) has provided us with ample moisture to ensure the safety of the operation. Preventing escaped fires is a primary concern and fires don't spread above snow cover. We had hoped to implement this project last winter, but due to the lack of snow cover it was postponed.
Please feel free to pass this information on to the community. I would be particularly interested in hearing back from any smoke sensitive individuals who may have concerns so that we can get them on a contact list and actually notify them of when we are igniting piles. In addition, I'd like to assure everyone that we do follow the guidelines established by the Colorado Air Pollution Control Division for this type of activity. This State agency issues us a permit and determines how many cubic feet of slash we may burn daily based on a weather forecast we obtain daily. The permit establishes procedures and guidelines to limit the smoke impact to the community.
Anyone desiring additional information may contact me at dbuchanan@fs.fed.us or give us a call at 303-258-9193. Our normal winter hours of operation are 8:30 to 17:00 hrs, Monday through Friday. E-mail may be the best means of establishing contact since we are busy burning slash piles in other locations as well.
Once we start, I will have our burn bosses contact you at least weekly at townclerk@jimtown.org to keep you informed of our activities. There are an estimated 2200 slash piles to be burned on this project.

The assertion that what ever the mediation group comes up must be lived with by everyone using James Canyon and other narrow mountain roads is not correct. The mediation is not binding.
This situation was created by our elected representatives on the State level and our elected County Commissioners paid for the mediation to attempt to squirsh the just opinions of Mountain voters.
The long term solution is to unseat every State Senator and State Representative who voted for the new law along with the Governor who signed it into law and then have the newly elected folk repeal said travesty.
The short term solution is to unseat every County Commission who panders to the bicycle lobby and refuses to close County owned roads in the mountains to bicycles.
I rather have the county rip out the pavement on James Canyon before I'd support building improvements on town property to establish Jamestown as a destination by bicyclists.

Anon, that's where we run into some tricky territory. My first thought after reading your post was that by making Jamestown unfriendly to cyclists, we will become the next Ward - by gaining a reputation as an unwelcoming community. I believe that's already happened/happening to an extent, which makes me sad because I've found the people here to be the opposite, in general. My understanding is that the water coolers were put out there so that the Merc wouldn't have to be filling people's water bottles. The bathrooms would serve the same purpose (not having to use the Merc bathroom)and would also be good for the people of our community (for use during park events and such). I do see your perspective and I'm sure you are not the only one thinking it but I think the reality is that the canyon is not going to be closed to cyclists. I do think maybe other changes are possibe (no riding two abreast, etc.) but people will be coming up here from here on out, whether we like it or not. And perhaps it's time to embrace that and allow them to help our community - eat at the Merc, help us keep the park clean, maybe join in on the "Friends" part of the "Merc and Friends" who've adopted the road. These are just people we're talking about here and if we were to all start seeing each other as fellow human beings, maybe we'll be less likely to act so viciously toward each other, both on the road and in our words. My thanks to the people participating in the mediation of this important issue.

Wouldn't placing bathrooms only seek to enforce Jamestown, and the canyon road required to get here, as a destination for cyclists? Notice they currently congregate around the water jugs. I submit that we make Jamestown as undesirable to cyclists as possible, i.e. no bathrooms, no water, no bike racks, double price at the Merc, etc. We cannot justify an argument over cyclists in the canyon while attempting to afford them luxuries once they arrive.

The reason most of us aren't involved in politics (ME!) is that it is a slow, tedious, frustrating process to get a darn law passed or changed. I agree with Jeff that INTENTION is everything. Pat Griffin & Joe Ryan (who are both cyclists & motorists) are representing the Bar-K and have done a wonderful job of collecting input from folks that they will bring to this meeting. The good energy & intention that they bring to this has to count for something--actually everything!
If you can't be at the meeting & haven't contacted your rep on this matter (I believe Johnathon is representing Jamestown) then it looks like we have another week...everyone's opinion & concern is valid! Let's put our gratitude & encouragement behind these guys for breaking hard ground.
I am personally encouraged that there IS a discussion, and I'm putting cynicism aside for now and cheering for some good (bipartisan)--ha! ideas & solutions--even if they are way out there in the future. Gotta start somewhere! :)
Peace Anne

People on this committee are trying to work out ways for bicyclists and motorists to get along on the road. I'm sure there are good people involved on all sides, and respect them for their efforts. HOWEVER, the state has just passed laws that not only increase the likelihood that you day-to-day travelers from the mountains will violate the laws, but that your liabilities in the case where a bicyclist is harmed put your homes and your livelihoods at risk to a much greater degree than before. Just remember that you are betting the farm every time you come near a cyclist, and then ask whether you would rather mitigate the risk by eliminating bike traffic on the narrow road that provides your sole option to Boulder each day. My opinion is that statistically, the stakes are way too high for the motorist, whether you love and respect your neighbors or not.

I've always been told that if you have fear over something you know nothing about, the best thing to do is to learn, rather than spreading Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
And while I don't know a lot about the current mediations/discussions, I do know that the folks participating in the process from up here are my friends and neighbors whom I have complete faith in and an enormous respect for. As such, I'll not comment on things I know nothing about, and make my own choice between being a positive part of this process or quietly accepting the outcome. That's the real choice we have right now. Complaining about the current state of things if you aren't participating is like complaining that your dinner is raw when the cook has just put it in the oven: they know it isn't done.
There's my two cents...anyone have a penny change for me?

I agree with both Dedra and Jyoti. I hope to see you both at the meeting next week. I don't know much about the mediations, but fear it is about forcing the new law down our throats and throwing caution, reason, common sense, and any consideration of priorities (emergency and work bound over recreation, socializing, and "training") to the winds. And thank you Nancy, going to Bar-K site next to seek the picture you referred to.

It's winter now, but let's not forget...
There's a meeting today regarding the commuter/bicyclist conflict. I'm guessing it will not be well attended by us mountain folk, as we're still just trying to dig out... a perfect example of the difference between people that live in the mountains, and people that come here to recreate. I'm NOT encouraged by the outcome of this mediation thus far, as there are NO changes to the recent legislation. It sounds to me that everyone is supposed to just make nice. We need significant changes to the legislation to make the drive up and down the canyon safe:
1) NO two abreast up the canyon (safety should trump the ability to "chat") 2) NO riding outside the bike lane down the canyon (if it's unsafe for bikers because the lanes have debris, then slow down), the road is for vehicles 3) Identification requirements for all bikers, as there are for vehicles (so errant bikers can be reported)
P.S. Dedra, very well said. I agree it's primarily a class issue.

Hi everyone. Cal, my drive in to Boulder this morning (at about 9am) was a rough one. It's pretty slippery, particularly in the windy section just before you hit the turnoff to Olde Stage. I would suggest taking it very slow, especially around the corners. The 36 isn't too bad but try to stay out of the slush on the sides. It can take you by surprise.
Be safe out there!

Personally, I see this as a class issue. I see a lot of well-to-do white (guys, mainly) with VERY expensive bikes feeling entitled to block the primary and only route that regular working people use to just get their necessary tasks done.
The reason this is such a hot issue is because fundamentally it's just wrong to validate recreating over basic public safety for those who have no alternative means of getting to town. I'm not in favor of mediating this--I will never be able to give a pack of 10+ cyclists at a time 3 feet of room going downhill. I can't get around them in the canyon, and the volume on nice weekends can be over 100 in a 20 minute drive. (Believe me, I count!)
I favor either closure of the mountain roads to bike traffic, or, if the 3 ft rule stands, then bikes need to be at least two car-lengths apart so that I can pass them individually going downhill. But even with this compromise, the bicyclists already have all the enforcement in their favor, since they don't have to register or display any identification.
It's just SO WRONG!

I think there should be a ban on all reckless cyclists including those who block the downhill lane by riding in the left wheel track, and any who use the paved roads for chit-chatting and socializing, placing that activity above say, rushing someone to the hospital on the ONLY road available to get there, and placing their workout above those needing to get to work. Fearful Canyon should just stay home since he/she is unable to try to see things from car riders point of view, sees all car riders as "bad" and all cyclists as perfect and never ever doing anything wrong, dangerous, or inconsiderate. Viewing cars as always the ones in the wrong is what keeps tensions high and prohibits positive change.

I think what needs to be addressed concerning cyclist is the "VOLUME" of riders at any given time. I think this is whats refered to as "TRAFFIC". 1% of ten cyclist or drivers is only one person causing a problem. When you double, triple, quadruple or more that number, you get to enjoy multiple potential incursions. Anything from having someone turning in front of you to having a cyclist crash in front of you and you're forced to stop and assist. The more people you pack into a confined space the more trouble you get. The canyon is the only road residents have between home and work. No one I know moved to the mountains so they could drive in traffic.

OK, I read the recommendations that Nancy posted (thanks Nancy). But besides restrooms in the town park and free massages for car drivers (only kidding about that one) I don't see much that convinces me that anything will change. There's a lot of nice outreach stuff but I don't really believe that it will have any impact on the car bandits that screw it up for everyone.
The only "idea" that I thought had some potential was "Create a working definition of reckless." But then it says "In the future, there may be a clearer definition for reckless driving in the canyon roads, Boulder County and the State of Colorado. At this point, the exact definition is still unclear."
I think that until there is a realistic definition of reckless driving and ENFORCEMENT based on the definition, then nothing will change. I also think that until there is definition and ENFORCEMENT there should be an outright ban on reckless drivers on every canyon road in Boulder county :)

Trick or Treat for UNICEF!
This year, I am proud to announce that we will be collecting funds for UNICEF on and around Halloween.
UNICEF (United Nations Childrens Fund) has been collecting funds for children all over the world since 1950. Your spare change can help save a childs life by providing drinking water, medical supplies, immunizations, and other emergency supplies. School supplies and educational support are also funded by UNICEF.
You can donate funds to UNICEF in three ways:
1. Look for the UNICEF box at The Merc. Thanks, Rainbow! 2. Keep your eyes out for kids with UNICEF boxes. 3. Look for the UNICEF booth at the Jamestown Halloween party at the elementary school gym on Halloween night!
Thank you!

FYI--Thursday Public Hearing about bicycle-motorist issues/recommendations (presented by Boulder County's specially-formed Cyclist-Motorist Working Group) From today's Daily Camera: ( http://www.dailycamera.com/ci_13646775?source=most_viewed) "After several months of work, Boulder County's new Cyclist-Motorist Working Group on Thursday will present its draft recommendations for increasing safety and decreasing tension on the winding roads that lead up to Jamestown and Ward. The group -- which is made up of avid road bikers, mountain town residents, frequent canyon drivers and staffers from the county Transportation Department and the Sheriff's Office -- formed in early August after long-standing tensions between cyclists and drivers escalated over the summer." The group's draft recommendations include 8 concerning Jamestown. For example: better access for bicyclists to the Town Park--across from the Merc, adding more bicycle racks and new bathroom facilities in/near the park and possibly a special flagstoned area in the park, and setting up a collection box so bicyclists can "give back" to the community. To view all draft recommendations: (click on link at bottom of page) http://www.bouldercounty.org/transportatio...istWorkingGroup.htmThe group was led by Jamestown's own Jonathan Bartsch (a professional facilitator/mediator) and included two Jamestown Town Board members who were participating out of personal interest, not as official reps of the town. The public hearing [weather permitting??]: When: Open house from 5 to 8 p.m. this Thursday. (Working group members will give a presentation at 5:45 p.m. followed by a discussion session at 6:15 p.m.) Where: Altona Grange Hall, 9386 N. 39th St. (Nelson Road?) in Longmont For additional information, contact George Gerstle, Boulder County Transportation Director at 303-441-3955.

OMG, did anyone else catch that FABULOUS sunrise with swirls of flourescent tangerine and tin foil metallic light gold and that blue that I can't find the words to describe????? And it wasn't just on the horizon, it was EVERYwhere, on all sides. I stood outside in the windy cold in my robe so I could see it ALL without the interruptions of the spaces between windows. Wow! CALLING ALL TALENTS!!!
Please come and share your talents and interests with the kids of Camp Jimtown and Jamestown School! We are now offering specialized workshops and need our gifted commUNITY members to participate!
Every week, we offer DRAMA CLUB on Tuesdays, ART CLUB on Wednesdays, and FITNESS CLUB on Thursdays, usually from 3:30-5 p.m. If you or anyone you know can come in and lead the children in any of these areas, please contact Laura @ (3o3) 545-55o2. Let us know if you can volunteer your time and expertise or what you would charge for your services, as well as how many sessions your workshop might be, what supplies are needed, etc.
Even if your talent doesn't necessarily apply to these categories, we welcome ANY new areas of learning and we can certainly adapt our schedule accordingly!
Crafters & Artists are especially needed to help us to create items to sell at the upcoming JAM Craft Fair in December. Our many commUNITY musicians, knitters, crocheters, bakers, cooks, storytellers, etc. are always welcome!
WORKSHOP DATES AVAILABLE in 2009:
November 10th, 12th, 17th, 18th, 19th December 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 15th, 16th 17th

I just have to say how GREAT the town hall looks. I am SO glad the addition "matches" what's there and compliments the existing building and does not overwhelm it. The stonework is gorgeous. Too often, additions ruin the charm, character and personality of a structure, especially when it is historic or old fashioned. I am so relieved that is NOT the case with the town hall. Thanks and great job to all involved!

FALL FESTIVAL OF EARLY MUSIC--FREE, this SATURDAY from 10:15 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Canyon Theater of the Boulder Public Library. Lectures & Performances:
10:15 am Trillo, appoggiatura, anticipation, acciaccatura: What to use and when: Lecture/Demonstration by Evanne Browne 11:15 am Recital: The Renaissance Project 12:00 Lunch at your pleasure at surrounding cafés. 1:30 pm Bringing Early Renaissance Music to Life: Lecture/Demonstration by Sylvia Rhyne and Eric Redlinger of Asteria 2:30 pm Recital: Quintessence and Rose Garden Recorder Ensembles 3:30 pm Various Agreeable Sounds: A Continuo Guide for All Musicians: Lecture/Demonstration by Frank Nowell 4:30 pm Recital: Baroque Youth Ensemble
Information about the presentations and recitals:
Trillo, appoggiatura, anticipation, acciaccatura: What to use and whenLecture/Demonstration by Evanne Browne Saturday, October 24, 10:15 am, Boulder Public Library Just because you can execute one doesnt mean you should. But other times, an embellishment is required! Come for a participatory session about early to late-Baroque ornaments, not just what they are, but where and why they should or should not be in a phrase, cadence or da capo. Baroque specialist and soprano, Evanne Browne, will present an overview of ornamentation in early music. While geared towards singers, this session is also suitable for instrumentalists.
Recital: The Renaissance Project Saturday, October 24, 11:15 am, Boulder Public Library Formed by Arthur H. Bragg in 2007 to meet the needs of amateur singers looking for a high-quality unaccompanied choral experience, the Renaissance Project is a chorus of 22 singers whose mission is to explore the great choral works of the Renaissance.
Bringing Early Renaissance Music to LifeLecture/Demonstration by Sylvia Rhyne and Eric Redlinger of Asteria Saturday, October 24, 1:30 pm, Boulder Public Library Having travelled extensively to castles, monasteries and archives throughout France, Germany and the Low Countries in pursuit of a better understanding of Medieval and Renaissance music, the members of Asteria demonstrate that early music can be just as lively as Mozart, or as passionate as Wagner, all the while respecting the original intent of the music. With the aid of numerous visual aids and musical examples, Asteria examines the context for music from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Recital: Quintessence Recorder Ensemble; The Rose Garden Recorder Ensemble Saturday, October 24, 1:30 pm, Boulder Public Library The abilities of the Quintessence Recorder Ensemble belie the ages of its young performers, which range from 12 to 17. All are students of Linda Lunbeck, who also coaches the Rose Garden Recorder Ensemble.
Various Agreeable Sounds: A Continuo Guide for All MusiciansLecture/Demonstration by Frank Nowell Saturday, October 24, 3:30 pm, Boulder Public Library This presentation is for all instrumentalists and singers who want to know more about the important role of continuo in performing Baroque music. It will focus not on the numbers, figures, and chords of continuo playing, but rather on how to use basso continuo to build a cohesive Baroque sound and support the interpretation of a particular musical piece. Topics include what instruments can be used, the choices to be made, and what to expect from continuo players. We'll listen to brief recorded examples, taking our cue from Saint Lambert's treatise on accompaniment: Music is a mixture of various agreeable sounds whose sweetness, combination and arrangement delight the soulentering it by way of the sense of hearing.
Recital by the Baroque Youth Ensemble Saturday, October 24, 4:30 pm, Boulder Public Library The Baroque Youth Ensemble is an educational outreach program of the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, providing an opportunity for talented middle- and high-school aged musicians to explore and perform Baroque music under the guidance and coaching of BCOC musicians.
Please go to EarlyMusicColorado.org for information about other Festival Events on Friday and Saturday evenings, and all day on Sunday.

I have been on what seems like a life-long quest for the perfect reminder system. I'm not sure I found it but this one is quite good and free. Called ReminderFox, it installs in FireFox. If you use more than one computer (work/home) you can also have your reminders show up on each one if you have access to a network storage location such as a web site. Only shortcoming seems to be that it doesn't sync with iPhone/iPod Touch. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

Please mark your calendars!
Because we live in such an amazing community (and perhaps because we have such a "charmingly grungy" town cafe as well-) neighbors have actually asked when they can get involved with a repeat of last year's day of cleaning! Impossible to pass up! So-come anytime on Wednesday November 11th, which is Veteran's Day, for our own second annual day of action. We will be cleaning ALL day and serving pizza for the well loved volunteers.
(We'll remind you in a couple of weeks, but wanted to give plenty of advance notice as your veteran's day's activities fill up!)
On a completely different note- anybody remember who borrowed the Merc's Kitchen Aid Mixer, or if so bring it on back! Thanks.

NOBODYS FRIEND
My name is Gossip. I have no respect for justice. I maim without killing. I Break hearts and ruin lives. I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age. The more I am quoted, the more I am believed. My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves against me because I have no name and no face. To track me down is impossible. The harder you try, The more elusive I become. I am nobodys friend. Once I tarnish a reputation, it is never the same. I topple governments and wreck marriages. I ruin careers and cause sleepless nights. I make the innocent cry. Even my name hisses. I am called Gossip. I make headlines and headaches. Before you repeat a story ask yourself: Is it true Is it harmless? Is it necessary? If it isnt, dont repeat it.

I just want to say my disappointment in those who continue to talk bad about me, in which I actually overheard the gossip by accident this time. please, if you have issues with others, go to them, ask, be admirable and not talk behind others backs. To those who do not participate in town gossip, I applaud you, shine on maybe the ones who like to talk will catch on. Respect, pass it on

J'townians....I took a strole down to the merc last night to see the famous Howletts Gulch....mighty band....but...I lost my keys. From the end of the park (Cleg's house) up Main to the merc somehow I dropped them. They have a pink hook and maybe three or four keys. If anyone happens to see them could you call Judy at 3o3-443-1173. I'll be walking Main today to see if I can find them. Thanks very much. JM

from Don (Neighborhood Chimney Sweep) I have been cleaning clmneys for 21 years. The main thing I have learned is that slow burning fires are the main cause of creosote build-up. One of the main causes of this is trying to keep fires buring all night. I recommend letting your fire go down 1 hour before you go to bed. I also recommend you never leave fires unattended. Should you have a chimney fire you need to be in a position to deal with it immediately. Our volunteer fire depts do an outstanding job and I sure they don't like getting called out at 3a.m. at night. Your wood stove or fireplace is only as safe as the person using it. Excellent FREE concerts tomorrow--Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.--at the Boulder Public Library! Gustafer Yellowgold concerts are a unique blend of live music and moving image. The minimally animated illustrations are accompanied by illustrator/songwriter Morgan Taylors catchy and original story-songs for a truly different multimedia experience that is entrancing children, teens and adults alike. Gustafer is a friendly creature who came to Earth from the sun and has an unusual magnetism for making friends with some of Earth's odder creatures. His best friend is Forrest Applecrumbie the flightless Pterodactyl. Gustafer and Forrest built a small cottage-style home on the edge of an uncharted wooded area in Minnesota. He has a pet Eel named Slim (short for Slimothy) and a pet Dragon named Asparagus who lives in his fireplace and loves corn on the cob. Gustafer's pals, the Mustard Slugs practice their math under the shrubbery. Since his creation in 2005, Gustafer Yellowgold has become an international phenomenon, acclaimed by the New York Times, which said, The show is a cross between Yellow Submarine and Dr. Seuss. Entertainment Weekly praised …The most infectious original songs. Its like tapping into some pleasure center in the brain- both adult and kid…absurdly appealing. Grade: A. New York Magazine named Morgan Taylor Best Kids Performer in its 2008 Best of New York Awards. Take a look at Gustafers MySpace page to see what his fans think! The Gustafer Yellowgold Show, with its unique crossover appeal, has performed as the wild-card opening act for Wilco and The Polyphonic Spree. Gustafer recently made his off-Broadway debut at the DR2 Theatre in a new show, Gustafer Yellowgolds Mellow Sensation. Tours to arts centers, childrens museums, schools, libraries, cinemas and theaters have taken the show all across the United States, the U.K and even Korea! Taylor's other projects include playing bass for The Autumn Defense (featuring John and Pat from Wilco), as well as a recording project with Tony Award winning songwriter Duncan Sheik. The award-winning DVD/CD sets Gustafer Yellowgolds Have You Never Been Yellow? and Gustafer Yellowgold's Wide Wild World were released by Apple-Eye Productions in 2007.

Use less printer ink, save money. Seems obvious. I found out about Ecofont which uses ~20% less ink than standard fonts. It's free from a Dutch company. Ecofont saves ink by leaving small holes in the printed letters. I tried it in 12 pt. and it looks fine. By zooming in 300% I could see the holes but who cares. http://www.ecofont.com/ecofont_en.htmlThe page has a download link and links for instructions on how to install for Mac and PC.

Sal is soooo right! As much as I LOVE the music we usually have at the Merc, how often do we get the kind of music where a packed house gives a standing ovation? I think we've been privileged to host another band that's gonna go places! (I also love it that they are the kind of band that keeps coming back! In this case, it's a win-win where they're doing both!)
And how about that Whole Hog dinner????? Yum-yum!!!!! Thanks, Dave and Frank and the Merc!!!!! God, I love this town!

Thanks to the Merc for hosting another amazing show with the stereofidelics. http://www.stereof.comThe husband and wife group from Asheville N.C. were incredibly entertaining to watch. If you looked away you might think there were 4 or 5 musicians on the tiny Merc stage. There were only 2. One reviewer said it best: "The StereoFidelics are like a five-hour energy shot for your ears. I just finished listening to "Spanish Radio'' off Asheville, N.C., duo The StereoFidelics' debut album, Only Sleeping, and boy are my ears spent. The track opens with Chris Padgett's acoustic guitar and Melissa McGinley's violin trying to one-up each other in an ultra-hyper flamenco-like showdown. As it advances, the song feels like a soundtrack of young lovers in the early days of a whirlwind romance -- there's intensity, passion and a little drama. It's a powerful sound to come from four hands." --John Liberty, Kalamazoo Gazette

THE PIG WILL BE FREED FROM IT'S EARTHLY CONFINES SOON. I had a sample and it melts in your mouth. You know, being omnivorous is only natural. Humans do what humans do naturally. Sometimes it does seem that we are a convoluted species and quite often our actions are counter-intuitive, but maybe in time we will recognize the err's of our ways. In the mean time I'm going to enjoy and be thankful for PORK, so come on down and have a big ole plate of swine cooked to perfection.

I also used Ray at Rams one year. Got three deliveries from him of a cord of wood each time. Not one of those deliveries, even after complaining about the shortage, were a full cord of wood (4x4x8). And I do not stack cords tightly. The person who installed my stove also had the same experience, but I found out too late. My stack was approx. 4x4x6 - that's about 3/4 of a cord. You do the numbers on what you are paying. Just my experience.

The trouble with Ray is that he scheduled 9 different delivery dates last year with us before we finally got our delivery. Our mistake is that first that we ordered through him and that the 2 cords of pinon that we burned created a massive creosite (or however, you spell it!) build up in our tall stove pipe. I would never, ever use pinon again. Congrats if you got speedy and dependable delivery from Ray but I would never use him again.

Hi Friends...you may remember last week that I sent a QT inviting you all to be part of the MOUNTAIN TOWN CO-OP and passed along a message regarding tire discounts. Here is more information on firewood. Please contact my friend, Elon (below) if you want to take part! ------------------------------------------------ Hello All,
Here is the sum total what Ive been able to find in regards to firewood (Pine and Hardwood)
PINE
Ponderosa Pine from Cal Wood. See previous email or call 303-449-0603. $170/cord split and delivered (Nederland, Gold Hill, Ward or Jamestown), $100/cord split if you pick it up in Jamestown, $50/cord if you pick it up in 8 logs. Mention MTC for this price. Local Gold Hill people also recommend John Price @ 303-440-8898. For $200 he will deliver and STACK a cord of Pine to the Nederland, Gold Hill, Ward or Jamestown area. He is about as local as you get and he hand splits his wood!
Below are the names that other people in the MTC have recommended. They are NOT giving us any special discount, but Im passing the info along for those that want to buy hardwood.
HARDWOOD
1. WC Construction @ 303-330-0517 (2 cord minimum). They have oak blocks (cut off the ends of railroad ties) at $200 per cord, but with a 2 cord minimum.
You can share these 2 cords with a neighbor (so you each take one cord) if you live close to each other. Hell drop 1 cord off at one house, then hell drop the other cord off at the other house. IF YOU BUY 6 CORDS, they will give you $100 discount if they are delivered to the same area. This means you pay only $184/cord of OAK. Again, you can share this with neighbors if you live close. If you are interested in sharing a wood order with your neighbors, send me an email and let me know what town you live in. Ill give you the email address of anyone else in your town that is interested in sharing a wood order. Ill only share your email address if you ask me to connect you to others in your area.
2. For any group of people that live close enough to share 11 total cords, we can get split RED OAK sent to us for $265/cord. This is the stuff you can buy locally for $440/cord and creates 60% more heat per cord then Pine. This would come on a big truck, so would need to be delivered to one area (needing at least 40 x 40 for the wood). It comes shrink wrapped on a pallet (4 x 4 x 4) and 2 pallets make up one cord. It would take some work and coordination, but doable if you have enough people to buy 11 cords. Again, let me know what town you are in, and Ill try to connect you with others in your area.
3. Abe Bustamante @ (303) 652-3394. He was recommended by several people, but he wasnt able to give any discount.
Many Regards,
- Elon

Heads up. The newest virus circulating is the UPS/Fed Ex Delivery Failure. You might receive an email from UPS/Fed Ex Service along with a packet number. It will say that they were unable to deliver a package sent to you on such-and-such a date. It then asks you to print out the invoice copy attached. DON'T TRY TO PRINT THIS. IT LAUNCHES THE VIRUS! Pass this warning on to all your PC operators at work and home. This virus has caused Millions of dollars in damage in the past few days. Snopes confirms that it is real. http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/ups.asp

Since I haven't been able to find a new home for my Siegler propane heater I'm looking for someone to haul it to the EcoCycle CHaRM center in Boulder some weekday next week. It's about 5.5' tall and weighs over 100 pounds. There may be a bookcase to deliver to Resource also. I'll pay $30 for both to be hauled. Call 303-449-5818 if interested in the job.

Not sure if anyone can help, but there's an injured bird on my deck. I have to head off for the day, and even if I could stay I wouldn't know the best course of action. The bird looks okay except for an injured left eye. But it's just sitting there. (It didn't fly away when my dog approached it.) If any bird lovers have an idea how to help, please feel free to come by. It's Richie Mastran's old place, above June and Leon's, on High Street. The bird's on the deck near the carport, right outside the house's french doors.
