I needed to buy a new phone today. The AT&T wireless store was down. The "entire national network," the sales associate told me. Couldn't use their Point of Sale systems, or activate my new phone.

Any other retail experiences, aside from airlines and ATMs?

Network Solutions was down for a good portion of the morning.
At first, I had just chalked it up to them sucking; now, it
makes more sense. (Don't get me wrong, tho; the entire expirence sucked overall, and I'll always attribute it to NetSol.)

Also, my oven was acting up; it kept turning itself off. But that may have been unrelated.

all the good jokes have already been taken.

I just had trouble accessing several sites, including metafilter, but I don't know if that was worm-related. Unfortunately microsoft issued a patch six months ago, so no class-action suit in sight.

I cannot believe an ATM network has a direct IP connection to the net. Sure, they might have a few firewalls in between, but they were open enough that the worm could knock out the server network at least.... that is just terrifying :(

Craniac, according to a recent post on bugtraq the patch issued 6 months ago didn't actually fix the issue but the one issued less than a week ago did.

They covered the story on NPR yesterday, and, while they mentioned the worm name, they didn't identify it as a problem specific to Microsoft SQL Server. A conspiracy theorist would say that Microsoft PR was in overdrive trying to make sure the problem didn't stick to them, but I have a feeling NPR was just trying to make the story simple enough for the average american. Still, interesting that most of the mainstream press I've seen fails to mention microsoft specifically.

First thing I thought. Of course the actual old school ATM network isn't IP, but I just remembered there are some slow ATMS you will sometimes see at like cheapo convenience stores where you hear them dialing a connection. I was always weary of them.
I think also, as someone mentioned, this wasn't identified right off as effecting SQL. I imagine a lot of overzealous Sysadmins pulled servers offline as a C.Y.A. measure. For instance, my site runs on Linux - but my host still took the server down for a bit.

My (uninformed) impression was that some of the damage from this worm was just excessive traffic from infected hosts scanning for other vulnerable hosts. I've seen a couple accounts of things like routers getting swamped and crashing, just from the absurd traffic levels (and perhaps, a-typical traffic patterns?) that this generated.

It wouldn't surprise me if _something_ important for BofA's ATM network could be affected by such traffic-related problems (perhaps a VPN link somewhere?). Or some over-worried/zealous admin (or watchdog software, for that matter) might have shut down both a public gateway to the internet, and an internal gateway used by the ATMs, when he should have only shut down the public gateway.
