I recently had Pristine Home Inspections do an inspection for me. John Cheney was the inspector. His fee was $265 and he explained everything in very understandable terms (but didn't make me feel stupid :).

Habitat for Humanity looking for Candidates for New Homes
A letter from Eileen Gebbie, Executive Director:

(I know this is a little lengthy, but great information to pass on to anyone you know who might qualify and be interested. Thanks!)

Dear friends:

I'm hoping you can help us with finding two home families, one for a house
scheduled to go up this summer (in Champaign, completed in October) and
another to go up by April 2009 (in Urbana). Our selection committee is
reviewing candidates weekly but no strong ones are emerging for these homes
(primarily related to debt and/or income level). A brief outline of our
criteria is below. You're welcome to post it in break rooms, churches, send
to your h.r. directors or social workers. I'm also happy to provide
brochures.

Thank you,

Eileen

How to refer families to Habitat for Humanity -
Habitat for Humanity is a not-for-profit housing development organization
partnering with low-income families to build simple, decent, affordable
homes that are sold to homeowners on a 20-year, 0%-interest mortgage.
Habitat does not provide emergency shelter, short-term housing, or free
housing.

Selection Criteria -
Habitat bases selection of homeowner families on three criteria-need for
adequate shelter, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with Habitat to
build a home. Habitat cannot help families with immediate housing needs.
Our application process takes 30 to 90 days, and it is usually a minimum of
one year from the time a family is selected until their home is built.

Income and Credit History -
Applicants must meet certain financial eligibility criteria (minimum and
maximum income levels - see below, no bankruptcy within the last two years,
no outstanding civil judgments). A report from one of the three major
credit reporting agencies is required; we look at accounts that have been
charged off or in collection, payment histories, and the amount of current
indebtedness. In general, families need to have an annual income of at
least $19,000 to qualify for a Habitat home and minimal long-term debt.

Residency Requirements -
Applicants must be residents of Champaign County for at least one year or
working in Champaign County for at least one year and be willing to relocate
to Champaign County. We currently have lots available in Champaign, Urbana,
and Rantoul; we do not build homes outside Champaign County.

Work History -
Applicants must have a stable work history or a reliable source of income
that is expected to last at least three years. They should have been in
their current job at least six months. Current and former employers will be
contacted for verification of employment and references. Applicants must
have the documented right to work in the United States.

Willingness to Partner -
Homeowners are required to invest a minimum of 250 hours of volunteer labor
in Habitat projects after they are selected and before they are allowed to
move into their homes. Prospective homeowners must be able to make this
time commitment. Minor children are not allowed on a build site, so parents
must have some provision for child care. Registered sex offenders are not
eligible to become Habitat homeowners.

If you know families who would be candidates for a Habitat home, we would
like to talk to them. Have them call 359-0507 ext. 130 to schedule an
intake appointment or stop by the ReStore (119 East University Avenue,
Champaign) during business hours and fill out a contact information sheet
(available from the cashier).

Ronnie,

Try either Cameron's Catering (they're on top of the terminal in Urbana) or upstairs at the Great Impasta. Cameron's is great and they have a smaller room you can use and a bigger one for I believe, 50 or more.
Hope that helps.

Does anyone know of an off the beaten track place to hold a shower? I'm co-planning a baby shower in July and all my usual spots are unavailable. Preferably in the Champaign/Urbana area and not too expensive.

Gail, I have used Champaign Computer Corp. at 1212 Hagan 356-9770 for both my PC and a laptop. I was VERY pleased. They are efficient and get back to you with the problem/estimate in a timely fashion, as well as the repair.
[Go east on Bradley past Prospect...turn left onto Hagan, on the east side of the street. Park in front on street or parking lot. Easy~
