Java would be another free option (in terms of build tools and run-time libraries). I've never tried thinbasic so I can't contrast the two.

Been looking at thinbasic to try replicate trek75.. which was more of a multiplayer version of trek73.. if I ever get the code untangled that is.
It is a horrendous mess of goto's in and out of loops.. ack.
I think thinbasic will fit the bill though.. not looking for something that I have to pay for, and something that I would be putting open source later, after I get it where I want it.
Let me know if you think there are better options.
