This Discussion board will be to discuss and understand the paramount importance of regularly chanting the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantras daily along with Hare Krishna Maha-mantra in order to quickly achieve the supreme goal of human life which is pure love for Their Lordships Nityananda-Gauranga and Radha-Krishna.

Swamiji, Dandavats. I have read the extensive shastric evidence (http://gaurangapada.blogspot.com/) you have compiled for the regular chanting of the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantras. The quotes are very clear and show that these two Mantras are authorized Mantras and have been chanted in both japa and kirtana by our acharyas. But I have one question before taking up the practice of daily chanting these Mantras. I understand that though Shrila Prabhupada gave us this Pancha-tattva Mantra, he did not recommend it to be chanted regularly on beads. At the same time he says that the names of Nityananda and Gauranga should be chanted very regularly. Though our Acharyas (Shrila Prabhupada, Shrila Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada, Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura) have mentioned so clearly in their instructions about the paramount importance of very regularly chanting the names of Nityananda and Gauranga, why have they not introduced this practice themselves?

Pranams. I thank you so much for asking this question. It is the most relevant question which has already been asked to me by hundreds of devotees and it is quite appropriate to put it on this discussion board so the answer will be available to one and all. The first thing to be made clear is that the regular chanting (japa) of the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantras on beads is not to replace the chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra but it is in additon to it and is actually meant to quickly give us qualification to chant the pure Maha-mantra.

To begin with I would like to quote the following verse spoken by Shrila Shukadeva Goswami in the Shrimad-Bhagavatam Canto 10.33.31:

isvaranam vacah satyam, tathaivacaritam kvacit;
tesam yat sva-vaco-yuktam, buddhimams tat samacaret.

"The statements of the Lord's empowered servants are always true, and the acts they perform are exemplary by us only when consistent with those statements. Their other acts which may not be in consistent with their own statements or scriptures are extraordinary and unimitable and meant only for them. Therefore one who is intelligent should simply carry out their instructions with great care and detail, only follow those actions of theirs which are as per their own instructions and scriptures and do not criticize or develop doubts in them for their extraordinary actions which may not confirm to their own statements or scriptures."

This means that for us the teachings and the instructions of the great Acharyas are more important than their transcendental and extraordinary actions. I would like reply in a few points:

(1) We cannot imitate their actions because of being on a much lower platform. Infact we may not even be able to understand their actions what to speak of trying to imitate them. (vaishnavera vakya kriya mudra vijneha na bujahaya)

(2) Great unconventional acharyas may even sometimes not implement their own instructions or the instructions of the scriptures because they are not bound to follow the standard path recommended in the scriptures or by their own selves. Prabhupada says somewhere in the Bhagavatam that the great Acharyas are as independent as the Supreme Lord in givng their mercy.

(3) Though the Acharyas have repeatedly explained the glories of the regularly chanting the Gauranga and Nityananda Mantras and their exclusive potency to remove the ten offenses in chanting the Maha-mantra, they are personally free not to implement their own teachings in their own preaching activities and instead they can give people directly the Maha-mantra because they themselves being the direct associates of Lords Nityananda-Gauranga can remove the ten offenses simply by their presence. But it will be appropriate for the followers not to imitate their activities rather try to follow their clear instructions in this regard as given below:

In Shri Chaitanya-Charitamrita Adi-lila 8.31, Shrila Krishnadas Kaviraja Goswami states this verse for the benefit of all living entities:

caitanya-nityanande nahi esaba vicara
nama laite prema dena, vahe asrudhara

"But if one only chants, with faith or mechanically or even without sufficient faith the holy names of Lord Gauranga and Nityananda, very quickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Since in the chanting of the names of Nityananda-Gauranga there is no consideration of offenses like in the names of Krishna (which one may chant for many many lifetimes with offenses without achieving love of Krishna), one will very quickly come to the stage of love of God and tears of pure love flow from his or her eyes, simply by chanting Gauranga-Nityananda's names."

Anubhasya by Om Visnupada Gaudiya Vaishnava Mukutmani Bhaskara Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada:

"The Hare Krsna maha-mantra considers the offenses whereas the names of Gauranga-Nityananda don't consider offenses. An offensive chanter will never achieve the fruit of chanting (pure love for Krsna) simply by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra."

  (THE SECRET OF ALL SECRETS)

(Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta continues): "THEREORE TILL THE TIME HE IS COMMITTING OFFENSES, HE SHOULD REGULARLY CHANT THE NAMES OF GAURANGA-NITYANANDA WHICH ARE THE GRAHANAKARI-NAMA (MOST IMP NAMES TO BE ACCEPTED AND CHANTED) FOR THE SADHAKA IN THE ANARTHA-YUKTA STAGE. DUE TO THE *REPEATED CHANTING (KARITE KARITE) OF THE NAMES OF GAURANGA-NITYANANDA, ALL THE OFFENSES WILL BE DESTROYED AND HE OR SHE WILL VERY QUICKLY ACHIEVE THE FRUIT OF THE CHANTING, PURE LOVE OF KRSNA."

(Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada continues) "The philosophical principle behind these statements is as follows -- The aspirant who is averse to Lord Krsna approaches Lords Gauranga-Nityananda to become attracted to Lord Krsna. The Hare Krsna maha-mantra can only be uttered purely by the sadhaka when he or she is on the perfected stage (sadhana-siddha) and when he or she becomes free from all anarthas (unwanted things in the heart). If sadhakas full of offenses chant the maha-mantra, the maha-mantra will never give them love for Krsna."

"Thus Lord Gauranga-Nityananda are the most worshipable Lords for the souls who are full of offenses and Their Names are thus most worshipable too. That is why Their service and the service of Their Names and Pastimes is more appropriate and beneficial for these unfortunate souls than even the service of Lord Krsna. If the sadhaka without hearing proper instructions, proudly thinks himself to be on the perfected stage and tries to render direct service to the Hare Krsna maha-mantra by chanting it, then the offenses will surely come and bar his oe her progress. On the other hand, if the sadhaka who is full of offenses, gives up his sense of false pride of thinking himself on the perfected stage, and thus approaches and worships the two Jagadgurus Lord Nityananda-Gauranga and chants Their Names and accepts instructions from Their Pastimes and Their devotees, They will deliver him from all offenses and reward him with the realization of Their own forms (svarupas) of Svayam-Rupa (Lord Gauranga) and Svayam-Prakasa (Lord Nityananda). Then the soul realizes one's own constitutional position in relation with the two Lords and thus achieves perfection."

(Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada continues): "The name of Krsna and Gauranga - both are non-different than the named Lord. Those who think that Krsna is any way inferior or limited than Gauranga are in gross ignorance."

LORD KRISHNA'S MERCY IS GENERALLY ONLY UPON THE LIBERATED OR PERFECTED SOULS WHO ARE SURRENDERED TO HIM. BUT THE MAGNANIMITY AND MERCY OF LORD GAURANGA-NITYANANDA'S NAMES IS ESPECIALLY FOR THE SOULS WHO ARE OFFENDERS AND FULL OF ANARTHAS AND DESIRES FOR MATERIAL SENSE GRATIFICATION."

(Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada continues) "The chanting of Lord Gauranga-Nityananda's names and Their worship very quickly delivers the soul from all the offenses and thus the soul achieves shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Gauranga-Krsna."

Purport to the above verse by Om Visnupada Shrila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

"A neophyte student who is not sufficiently educated or enlightened should not indulge in the worship of Sri Radha and Krsna or the chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra. Even if he does so, he cannot get the desired result. One should therefore chant the names of Nitai-Gaura and worship Them without false prestige. [...] In the beginning one should *** very regularly *** chant Sri Gaurasundara's holy name and then chant the holy name of Lord Nityananda. Thus one's heart will be cleansed of impure desires for material enjoyment. Then one can approach Vrndavana-dhama to worship Lord Krsna. [...] Considering the position of the people of this age, however, the chanting of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's name is more essential than the chanting of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the most magnanimous incarnation and His mercy is very easily achieved." (Extracts from the Cc Adi 8.31 purp)

Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in Navadvipa-dham-mahatmya Chp 1

kali jivera aparadha asankhya durvara;
gauranga-nama vina tara nahika uddhara.

"The offenses and sins of the living entities in Kali-yuga are unlimited and absolutely insurmountable. That is why the souls can never never be delivered without the regular chanting the most merciful name of 'Gauranga'."

(4) So some followers may want to implement the very explicit and important instructions of the great Acharyas (given above) regarding the very regular chanting of the most merciful names of Lord Nityananda and Lord Gauranga in addition to the Hare Krishna Mantra, which the Acharyas themsleves may not have implemented practically due to their exalted and independent position. Such a sincere effort will surely please all the Acharyas. Because this is a sincere attempt at following their vani and not simply to imitate their actions.

(5) It is the order of Adi-Guru Lord Nityananda Balarama to every living entity to constantly chant the name of Lord Gauranga in japa and kirtana. And if this order is spread very widely all over this world all the Acharyas will surely be extremely pleased because they are themselves are the order-carriers of Lord Nityananda Prabhu.

(6) An example given by Shrila Prabhupada is of a small fire and a big fire. A great Acharya is like a big fire and can take all the namaparadhas of unlimited disciples and personally burn them up due his exalted spiritual potencies. But a guru not on that platform is like a smaller fire and can get quickly extinguished on receiving the heavy reactions of the namaparadhas of his disciples. So such a guru has to implement some instructions of the great Acharyas which they themselves may not have implemented in order to destroy his own ten offenses and that of the disciples' too. Ofcourse sometimes a perfect Acharya (big fire) can also widely spread the chanting of teh names of Nityananda and Gauranga in addition to the Maha-mantra. Because the only way to destroy the ten offenses of the living entities is the regular chanting of the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantras as per the instructions of the great scriptures and Acharyas. So the guru can introduce the chanting of these most powerful, merciful and authorized Mantras to all his disciples as per the repeated teachings of guru, sadhu and shastra:

Shrila Prabhupada in Cc Madhya 24.330: "The spiritual master has to select a mantra for his disciple according to the disciple’s ability to chant different mantras."

"The expert devotees also can discover novel ways and means to convert the nondevotees in terms of particular time and circumstance. Devotional service is dynamic activity, and the expert devotees can find out competent means to inject it into the dull brains of the materialistic population. Such transcendental activities of the devotees for the service of the Lord can bring a new order of life to the foolish society of materialistic men." (SB 1.5.16 purport)

Prabhupada: "Nitai-Gauranga and Hare Krsna, there is no difference. Nitai-Gauranga is also nice. Whatever he finds convenient, let him chant." (Shrila Prabhupada's Room Conversation with Yoga Student regarding Japa, March 14, 1975, Iran)

[...]Vaisnavas consider Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu nondifferent from Radha-Krsna (sri-krsna-caitanya radha-krsna nahe anya). Therefore *ONE WHO CHANTS THE MANTRA "GAURANGA" and ONE WHO CHANTS THE NAMES OF RADHA AND KRSNA ARE ON THE SAME LEVEL." (Srila Prabhupada in Cc Antya-lila 2.31 purport)

These are some points of understanding in this regard. There can many more points which I am not including to prevent this reply from becoming too much voluminous.

I would like to conclude with a most striking quote:

GAURANGA-MANTRA IS THE THE ONLY WAY ACHIEVE LORD KRISHNA

From Shri Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya, Chp 7, the great sage Narada instructs King Suvarna Sena:

gauranga-nama na laiya, yei krsna bhaje giya;
sei krsna bahu kale paya;
gauranga-nama laya jei, sadya krsna paya sei;
aparadha nahi rahe taya.

"If someone endeavours to worship Krsna without regularly chanting the name of Lord Gauranga, then he or she will achieve Krsna only after a very prolonged period of time. But if someone takes shelter of the name of Lord Gauranga, he or she will achieve Krsna very soon because his offenses will immediately cease to exist."

"Simply by chanting or hearing the name of Lord Nityananda, the sinful inclinations in the hearts of all the living entities in the universe are permanently destroyed and their inherent purity is automatically awakened. On chanting or hearing the name of Lord Nityananda, even the merchants, degraded, fallen and foolish people are purified and immediately become realized in the Absolute Truth and devotees of the Lord." (Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada in Shri Chaitanya-Bhagavata, Madhya-Khanda 3.134)

Dear Sripada Gaurangapada and Vaisnavas,

sri sri guru gaurangau jayatah

Thank you for both inquiring and answering this important question. In a spirit of humility, seeking instruction, i would like to pursue this line of inquiry.

Srila Prabhupada and other recent Acaryas of our sampradaya (Srila Sridhara Maharaja and Srila Puri Maharaja, for example) have repeatedly asked everyone to chant the mahamantra. Yet, as the Devotee has said previously, even if they recognized the glories of chanting the names of Nitai Gauranga, they have not introduced the practice.

Could you please explain so that even a dolt like me can understand why it may be necessary for us to chant the names of Nityananda Gauranga, when such great Acharyas spoke often of the sufficiency of the mahamantra?

I understand that the Acaryas must not be imitated in approaching the mahamantra, but Their instruction must be followed. Please address this apparent contradiction; that is my humble entreaty.

Pranams. Thank you Murari Chaitanya dasa prabhu for your keen interest to deeply understand this point.

Like we have seen in the previous reply, some preachers and followers of the Acharyas may choose to practically implement only those instructions of the Acharyas which the Acharyas themselves have practically implemented. There is nothing wrong in this and it is absolutely alright.

But some preachers and followers of the Acharyas may want to practically implement some instructions of the Acharyas which the Acharyas themselves may not have practically implemented. This is also an authorized way of pleasing the Acharyas and the Lord Himself. Each and every instruction of the Acharyas and the Lord is fully transcendental and powerful enough to deliver the entire universe even though the instruction may not have been practically implemented by the Acharyas themselves. So if a sincere follower down the line has full faith in such an instruction (guru-mukha padma vakya cittete kariya eka) and want to spread it widely in this world ofcourse without compromising or deviating from the other instructions of the Acharyas, he or she is certainly pleasing Lord Nityananda and all the Acharyas. This is what Shrila Prabhupada means when he states:

"The expert devotees also can discover novel ways and means to convert the nondevotees in terms of particular time and circumstance. Devotional service is dynamic activity, and the expert devotees can find out competent means to inject it into the dull brains of the materialistic population. Such transcendental activities of the devotees for the service of the Lord can bring a new order of life to the foolish society of materialistic men." (SB 1.5.16 purport)

"The spiritual master has to select a mantra for his disciple according to the disciple’s ability to chant different mantras." (Cc Madhya-lila 24.330)

Regarding the issue of sufficiency of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra, we know from the repeated statements of the Padma Purana, Hari-nama-cintamani etc. that there are basically two ways to destroy the formidable ten offenses in the chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra, which are the only obstacles on the path of a sadhaka in the achievement of Krishna-prema:

(1) To take shelter of very regularly chanting the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantras.

(2) To chant the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra constantly day and night without stoppage in multiples of atleast 64 rounds daily.

The second process of constant chanting of the Maha-mantra (atleast 64 rounds daily) is very difficult for the conditioned souls of Kali-yuga who have to struggle to even complete their 16 rounds daily of the Maha-mantra because of a lack of time which in turn is due to a lack of taste which in turn is due to mountains of offenses in their heart. It is obvious and clear that this process of constant chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra is accepted by a devotee who is very advanced in bhakti due to practicing bhakti for many many births. Ofcourse it is recommended that all the sadhakas should be able to raise one day to the level of chanting atleast 100,000 names of the Lord daily but it may be practically implemented only by a few very sincere souls.

Hence the more practical and the most powerful solution for the neophyte and beginner in spiritual life as suggested by Shrila Prabhupada himself (below) is to thus take very regular shelter of the Nityananda and Gauranga Mantras, which means to chant Them atleast 1000 times (10 rounds) each daily in additon to the chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra. This will enable the neophyte to quickly progress to the stage of chanting the Maha-mantra without offenses. This is the verdict of Shrila Prabhupada as posted in my previous reply:

According to Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada also, the Maha-mantra alone is sufficient only for the krishna-unmukha siddha souls who are completely anartha-aparadha-mukta. But for the anartha-aparadha-yukta krishna-vimukha souls, they should approch the Maha-mantra by first very regularly chanting the names of Nityananda and Gauranga.

In the Gauranga-lila-smarana-mangala stotram Verse 97, Shrila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura states:

namaparadham sakalam vinasya,
caitanya-namasrita-manavanam;
bhaktim param yah pradadau janebhyas,
tam gauracandram pranamami bhaktya.

"With great devotion, I bow before Lord Gaurachandra, who for they who take constant shelter of His most merciful name of Gauranga, immediately destroys all the various kinds of offenses in the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, and in this way awards His topmost transcendental devotional service to the living entities."

In Shri Chaitanya-chandramrita Verse 53 , Shrila Prabodhananda Sarasvati states the paramount importance of regularly the chanting name of Lord Gauranga:

ha hanta citta-bhuvi me paramosarayam,
sad-bhakti-kalpa-latikankurita katham syat;
hrdy ekam eva param asvasaniyam asti,
caitanya-nama-kalayan na kadapi socyah.

"Alas! Alas! How will the desire creeper of pure unalloyed devotional service to Lord Krishna sprout in the supremely unfertile desert of my heart? I have sown the seed of Krishna-nama-dhama-lila so many millions of times in my heart but it refuses to sprout due to my unlimited offenses. Thus now, in my heart, there is one and only one supreme consolation and solace. That is chanting of the name of Lord Gauranga. This chanting will factually and eternally put an end to all my lamentation and will work wonders in my heart softening it with pure love for the Lord."

These quotes and unlimited other quotes clearly demonstrate that chanting only Krishna-nama without Gauranga-nama is certainly not sufficient for the sadhakas in the offensive stage for achieving rapid progress to the stage of pure love of God. I have tried to address the sufficiency issue in short here. Thank you so much for raising this question.

These kind of questions make us really go deep into the subject and understand the subject through different angles of vision. You have presented the importance of the Gauranga and Nityananda mantras very convincingly and sastrically based. I have started chanting these names and must say that it has a very sweet flavour and is even difficult to stop.

That's the most wonderful news. Thank you so much. You will realize your siddha-deha very soon by the chanting of these aparadha-vimukti Mantras and even your offenses cannot check your progress in the achievement of Krishna-prema as explained in the Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya :

MILLIONS OF YEARS BY CHANTING KRISHNA-NAMA BUT VERY FEW DAYS BY CHANTING NITYANANDA-GAURANGA-NAMA

In Shri Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya, Chp 10, the personified holy place

Pushkara instructs the brahmana in Navadvipa:

(A) **KOTI KOTI VARSE kari sri krsna bhajana;
tathapi namete rati na paya durjana.

"A sinful or offensive person will not acquire attraction for the Hare Krishna maha-mantra or Lord Krishna's devotional service even if he chants the maha-mantra and worships Lord Krishna **FOR MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF YEARS** primarily due to his or her offenses."

(B) gauranga bhajile dusta bhava dure jaya;
**SVALPA DINE vrajadhama radha-krsna paya.

"But if he worships Gauranga by regularly chanting the name of 'Nityananda' and 'Gauranga', then his sinful and crooked mentality will immediately leave him and **IN A VERY FEW DAYS** he will achieve the eternal service of Lord Radha-Krsna in Vrajadhama.

(C) nija siddha-deha paya sakhira asraya;
nija-kunja sri yugala-seva tara haya.

"He or she will then instantly achieve his or her eternally perfect spiritual body and thus the shelter of the sakhis or gopies in Vrndavana. Then one will begin one's direct service to Shri Radha-Krishna in one's own transcendental grove of Vrndavana in one's constitutional position. All this is achieved simply by the chanting the names of Lord Nityananda and Lord Gauranga for a very short time."

"If one calls out the names of Nityananda and Gauranga, the purest Krsna-prema (pure love of Krsna) comes searching after such a person."

(Note: By only chanting the Hare Krishna Mantra, we struggle to search after Krishna-prema but by chanting Nityananda and Gauranga, suvimala Krishna-prema starts searching after us.)

"The offenses (which may be present) don't create any obstacles in path of achieving this love and tears start flowing from one's eyes in pure ecstatic love by chanting Nityananda and Gauranga's names even in the presence of offenses in our heart."

nitai mora jivana dhana nitai mora pati
nitai bihane mora ana nahi gati

O my Lord Nityananda, wealth of my life! O my master Nitai!
I have no other means of deliverance and destination in my life except the mercy of Lord Nityananda!

2)
samsara sukhera mukhe tuilya dia chai
nagare magiya khaba gahiya nitai

Leaving behind all worldly pleasures,
I want to reduce the happiness of family life to ashes.
Like a mendicant I shall live begging in town
and constantly singing and glorifying the holy name of Lord Nityananda.

3)
ye dese mora nitai nai sei dehe na yaba
nitai vihina kara mukha na dekhiba

Places where Lord Nityananda is not present I will never enter. I will not even look at the faces of those who are even slightly averse to spreading the glories of the Name and Pastimes of Lord Nityananda.

ganga yara pada jala harasire dhara
hena nitai na bhajiya dukha paiya mare

The water of the Ganga has emanated from His lotus feet
and Lord Siva has accepted it on his head.
In great distress the non-devotees give up their lives
without worshipping and chanting the name of Lord Nityananda.

Locana dasa says, "I will light a fire in the mouths of those who are deliberately averse and oppose the worshiping and chanting of the most holy name of my Lord Nityananda."

THE NAME 'NITYANANDA' IMMEDIATELY EVOKES TEARS AND ECSTASY OF PURE LOVE FOR KRISHNA EVEN IN A SINFUL PERSON

Chaitanya-charitamrita Adi-lila 8.23:
`nityananda' balite haya krsna-premodaya;aulaya sakala anga,asru-ganga vaya.

"Simply by chanting the name 'Nityananda' one awakens his love for Krsna. Thus all his bodily limbs are agitated by ecstasy of love of God, and tears flow from his eyes like the waters of the Ganges."

Purusottama Pandita, a resident of Navadvipa, was the Krishna's eighth gopala, Stoka-Krsna for Vrindavan. He would become almost mad as soon as he chanted or heard the holy name 'Nityananda'.

"The transcendental names of Nityananda and Gauranga are the supreme abodes
of unlimited happiness. Those who don't chant the names of Nityananda and
Gauranga surely become victims of Yamaraja, the god of death. Yamaraja will
drag them and forcibly drown them in the most abominable hellish regions."

THE WHOLE UNIVERSE IS PURIFIED BY CHANTING THE NAME OF 'NITYANANDA'

Shri Chaitanya-Bhagavata, Madhya-Khanda 3.134:

vanik adhama murkha ye karila para, brahmanda
pavitra haya nama laile yanra.

Translation:

"The entire universe is purified by chanting the name of Lord Nityananda as it is only He who delivered the fallen, the foolish, and the merchants."

Purport by Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada:

[...] nityanandera prabhura nama shravana karile jagatera sakala lokera papa-pravrtti prashamita haiya pavitra tara udaya haya. vanik, adhama, murkha - iharau pavitra haiya brahmajna u bhagavad-bhakta hana.

"Simply by chanting or hearing the name of Lord Nityananda, the sinful inclinations in the hearts of all the living entities in the universe are permanently destroyed and their inherent purity is automatically awakened. On chanting or hearing the name of Lord Nityananda, even the merchants, degraded, fallen and foolish people are purified and immediately become realized in the Absolute Truth and devotees of the Lord."

BECAUSE WITHOUT NITYANANDA ONE CAN NEVER ACHIEVE THE MERCY OF GAURANGA EVEN AFTER WORSHIPING GAURANGA FOR A MINIMUM 100 LIVES

From Shri Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya, Chp 4:

tumi yabe kara daya sei anayase; sri caitanya-pada paya prema-jale bhase.

Srila Jiva tells Lord Nityananda, "If You are merciful on someone, that person will effortlessly achieve the lotus feet of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu and thus drown in the ocean of pure ecstatic love for Lord Krsna.

tomara karuna vina gaura nahi paya, sata janma bhaje yadi gauranga hiyaya.

"But if someone does not get Your mercy, then such a person will never achieve Lord Gaura even if he or she worships Lord Gauranga for a minimum of 100 lifetimes."

Chaitanya-charitamrita Antya 6.131:
tomara krpa vina keha`caitanya' na paya;tumi krpa kaile tanre adhameha paya.

"No one can attain the shelter of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu without Your (Lord Nityananda's) mercy, but if You are merciful, even the lowest of men can attain shelter at His lotus feet."

BECAUSE IF GAURANGA'S PUNISHES, NITYANANDA PROTECTS US BUT IF NITYANANDA PUNISHES THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO HOPE

From Shri Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya, Chp 4: Jiva Goswami to Lord Nityananda:
gaura danta kara yadi tumi raksa kara, tumi yare danta kara gaura tara para.

"If Lord Gauranga punishes a devotee, You (Nityananda) protect him and somehow engage him in Gauranga's service (like in the example of Kala Krsnadasa), but if You punish a devotee, he eternally becomes estranged from Lord Gauranga."

BECAUSE NITYANANDA'S NAME AND FORM ARE FULL OF SUPREME ETERNAL BLISS

Chaitanya-bhagavata, Madhya-khanda 12.18:
name nityananda tumi, rupe nityananda; ei tumi nityananda rama murttimanta.

Lord Gauranga tells Lord Nityananda:

"Your name is Nityananda (eternally full of eternal bliss). Your form is also Nityananda (eternally full of eternal bliss). Your are Nityananda (unlimited bliss) in personified form because You are Lord Balarama Himself."

jaya jaya nityananda-caranaravinda, yanha haite painu sri-radha-govinda

"All glory, all glory to the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, by whose mercy I have attained Sri Radha-Govinda!"

Shrila Narottama das Thakura sings:
heno nitai vine bhai, radha-krishna paite nai

"Unless one worships Nityananda, one can never achieve Radha-Krsna."

nitae karuna habe vraje radha-krsna pabe

"If Nityananda is merciful,only then one will achieve the direct service of Radha-Krsna in Vraja."

BECAUSE NO ONE IN THIS CREATION BUT ONLY LORD NITYANANDA AND HIS NAME CAN BESTOW MERCY ON THE MOST FALLEN SOULS LIKE US

"Who in this creation but Lord Nityananda could show His mercy to such an abominable, comtemptible and the lowest person as me?

Chaitanya-charitamrita Adi 5.208-9:
preme matta nityananda krpa-avatara, uttama, adhama, kichu na kare vicara

"Because He is always fully intoxicated by ecstatic love for Lord Gauranga, He is an incarnation of causeless mercy. Thus He does not distinguish between the good and the bad people because He Himself is always intoxicated in pure love.

ye age padaye, tare karaye nistara, ataeva nistarila mo-hena duracara

"He indiscriminately delivers all those who simply fall down before Him. Therefore He has delivered such a sinful and fallen person as me."

BECAUSE LORD NITYANANDA IMMEDIATELY BESTOWS HIS TOPMOST MERCY PLEASED AT A SLIGHTEST SERVICE RENDERED BY US

bhaike bhartsinu muni, lana ei guna, sei ratre prabhu more dila darasana

"That night Lord Nityananda personally appeared to me in a dream in His most enchanting form and placed His lotus feet on my head and gave me eternal residence in Shri Vrindavana-dhama simply because I defended His glories and that of His intimate associate Minaketana Ramadasa while quarelling with my brother who had faith in Lord Gauranga but only a shadow of faith in Lord Nityananda." (WHAT A MERCIFUL LORD!)

BECAUSE ANYONE WHO HAS NO RELATION WITH NITYANANDA BY THE REGULAR CHANTING OF HIS NAME HAS WASTED HIS LIFE AND IS JUST LIKE AN ANIMAL

se sambandha nahi ja'r, brtha janma gelo ta'r
sei pasu boro duracar
nitai na bolilo mukhe, majilo samsara-sukhe
vidya-kule ki koribe tar (Narottama das Thakura)

"Anyone who has not established his relationship with Nityananda Prabhu by chanting His name 'Nityananda' is understood to have spoiled his valuable human birth. Such a human being is actually an uncontrollable animal. Because he never uttered the holy name 'Nityananda', he has become merged into so-called material happiness. What can his useless education and family tradition do to save him from the cycle of birth and death?"

BECAUSE ONE CAN NEVER EVEN VISIT VRINDAVANA WITHOUT ACHIEVING THE MERCY OF NITYANANDA AND GAURANGA BY VERY REGULARLY CHANTING THEIR NAMES DAILY

Cc Adi 8.3 purport:

"In the beginning one should very regularly chant Sri Gaurasundara's holy name and then chant the holy name of Lord Nityananda. Thus one's heart will be cleansed of impure desires for material enjoyment. Then one can approach Vrndavana-dhama to worship Lord Krsna. Unless one is favored by Lord Caitanya and Nityananda, there is no need to go to Vrndavana, for unless one's mind is purified, he cannot see Vrndavana, even if he goes there."

THE HOLY NAMES OF NITYANANDA-GAURANGA ARE THE ONLY WAY FOR THE OFFENSIVE SOULS TO ACHIEVE LOVE OF GOD

In Shri Chaitanya-Charitamrita Adi-lila 8.31, Shrila Krishnadas Kaviraja Goswami states this verse for the benefit of all living entities:

caitanya-nityanande nahi esaba vicara
nama laite prema dena, vahe asrudhara

"But if one only chants, with faith or mechanically or even without sufficient faith the holy names of Lord Gauranga and Nityananda, very quickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Since in the chanting of the names of Nityananda-Gauranga there is no consideration of offenses like in the names of Krishna which one may chant for many many lifetimes with offenses without achieving love of Krishna, one will very quickly come to the stage of love of God and tears of pure love flow from his eyes, simply by chanting Gauranga-Nityananda's names."

Anubhasya by Om Visnupada Gaudiya Vaishnava Mukutmani Bhaskar Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada:

Bengali: krsna-nama aparadhera vicara karena, gaura-nityanandera name aparadhera vicara nai. aparadhi krsna-nama grahana karilei kakhanei nama-phala (krsna-prema) labha karena na. aparadhi thaka-kaleu gaura-nityanandera nama grahanakari nama karite karite aparadha mocanante nama-phala labha karena. ihara vicara o siddhanta ei je-gaura-nityanandera nikata krsna-vimukha sadhaka krsna unmukha haibara janya gamana karena. ara sadhanasiddha, anarthamukta krsnanmukera uccarya krsna-nama anarthayukta avasthaya kakhanei phala (krsna-prema)pradana kare na. gaura-nityananda anarthayukta jivera sevya-vastu haoyaya tahadera seva jivera krsnaseva apeksa adhiktara prayojaniya. sadhaka siksara apraptite siddhabhimane krsna-namera seva karite udyata haile tahara anarthaei asiya upasthita haya; kintu nitai-gaurera bhajane siddhabhimanera chalana na rakhiya anarthayukta avasthayeo jagadguru siksaka dvayera nikata upasthita haile tahara tahadigake anarthamukta karaiya tanhadigera svayam-rupa o svayam-prakasa svarupa uplabdhi karana. tahatei jivera svarupa-jnanera udaya haya.

Translation: "The Hare Krsna maha-mantra considers the offenses whereas the names of Gauranga-Nityananda don't consider offenses. An offensive chanter will never achieve the fruit of chanting (pure love for Krsna) simply by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra."

(THE SECRET OF ALL SECRETS)

(Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta continues): "THEREORE TILL THE TIME HE IS COMMITTING OFFENSES, HE SHOULD REGULARLY CHANT THE NAMES OF GAURANGA-NITYANANDA WHICH ARE THE GRAHANAKARI-NAMA (MOST IMP NAMES TO BE ACCEPTED AND CHANTED) FOR THE SADHAKA IN THE ANARTHA-YUKA STAGE. DUE TO THE *REPEATED CHANTING OF THE NAMES OF GAURANGA-NITYANANDA, ALL THE OFFENSES WILL BE DESTROYED AND HE WILL VERY QUICKLY ACHIEVE THE FRUIT OF THE CHANTING, PURE LOVE OF KRSNA."

(Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada continues) "The philosophical principle behind these statements is as follows -- The aspirant who is averse to Lord Krsna approaches Lord Gauranga-Nityananda to become attracted to Lord Krsna. The Hare Krsna maha-mantra can only be uttered purely by the sadhaka who is on the perfected stage (sadhana-siddha) and who is free from all anarthas (unwanted things in the heart). If sadhakas full of offenses chant the maha-mantra, the maha-mantra will never give them love for Krsna.

"Thus Lord Gauranga-Nityananda are the most worshippable Lords for the souls who are full of offenses and Their Names are too. That is why Their service and the service of Their Names and Pastimes is more appropriate and beneficial for these unfortunate souls than even the service of Lord Krsna. If the sadhaka without hearing proper instructions, proudly thinks himself to be on the perfected stage and tries to render direct service to the Hare Krsna maha-mantra by chanting it, then the offenses will surely come and bar his progress. On the other hand, if the sadhaka who is full of offenses, gives up his sense of false pride of thinking himself on the perfected stage, and thus approaches and worships the two Jagadgurus Lord Nityananda-Gauranga and takes Their Names and instructions from Them, Their Pastimes and Their devotees, They will deliver him from all offenses and reward him with the realization of Their own forms (svarupas) of Svayam-Rupa (Lord Caitanya) and Svayam-Prakasa (Lord Nityananda). Then the soul realizes one own constitutional position in relation with the two Lords and thus achieves perfection."

English translation (Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada continues): "The name of Krsna and Gauranga - both are non-different than the named Lord. Those who think that Krsna is any way inferior or limited than Gauranga are in gross ignorance."

The glories of Lord Nityananda as the incarnation of Lord Balarama, the origin of both the spiritual and material world, are given in the revealed scriptures as follows:

    Vayu Purana

(1) balaramo mamaivamsah, so 'pi mat-prstham esyati;
nityananda iti khyato nyasi-cudamanih ksitau

  In the Vayu Purana, the Lord tells Brahma: "Lord Balarama, who is My first expansion and non-different from Me will also appear by My side as Lord Sri Nityananda. He will become the crest jewel of all renunciants on the earth."

(2) krtvavadhuta-vesam sa, dharman bhagavatan bahun;
grahayitva janan ittham grhinam asramam tatah.

  "Assuming the dress of an avadhuta, He will freely distribute bhagavata dharma i.e. love of God. He will distribute this pure love through various means and deliver all the living entities. He will do so first as a brahmacari and later as a householder."

(3) jahnavy-adibhir atmanam, darsayisyati manavan.

  "Accompanied by His eternal consort Shrimati Jahnavi-devi and many other intimate associates, He (Nityananda) will reveal His transcendental pastimes to the people."

   Ananta-Samhita

nityanando maha-kayo, bhutva mat-kirtane ratah;
vimudhan bhakti-rahitan, mama bhaktan karisyasi.

  In the Ananta-Samhita, the Lord states to Anantadeva: "When I appear in Navadvipa in Kali-yuga , You will become Nityananda. You will have a very tall, beautiful and large body, and You will be constantly absorbed in chanting My name and glories. In this way, by Your causeless mercy You will convert many bewildered fools who are devoid of devotion into My pure unalloyed devotees."

  Shri Chaitanya-Charitamrita, Adi 1.8-9

sankarsanah karana-toya-sayi
garbhoda-sayi ca payobdhi-sayi
sesas ca yasyamsa-kalah sa nitya-
nandakhya-ramah saranam mamastu

May Sri Nityananda Rama be the object of my constant remembrance. Sankarsana, Sesa Naga and the Visnus who lie on the Karana Ocean, Garbha Ocean and ocean of milk are His plenary portions and the portions of His plenary portions.

mayatite vyapi-vaikuntha-loke
purnaisvarye sri-catur-vyuha-madhye
rupam yasyodbhati sankarsanakhyam
tam sri-nityananda-ramam prapadye

I surrender unto the lotus feet of Sri Nityananda Rama, who is known as Sankarsana in the midst of the catur-vyuha [consisting of Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha]. He possesses full opulences and resides in Vaikunthaloka, far beyond the material creation.

CONCLUSION:

One can worship Lord Nityananda in the topmost manner by chanting His name (atleast 1008 times or 10 rounds) daily and by daily reading (1 chapter of) Chaitanya-Bhagavata daily which is the topmost scripture on the glories of Lord Nityananda composed by His most confidential associate Shrila Vrindavana das Thakura. And also by daily worshiping the Deities of Lord Nityananda-Gauranga!

Lord Visvambhara said, "Today is an aupicious day for Me, for I have seen devotional service, which is the essence of the four Vedas.

Purport by Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada

Devotional service alone is the purport and essence of the four Vedas. The Vedic literatures have ascertained devotional service as the only "essence." When the living entity's full knowledge is awakened, then devotional service, which is his eternal propensity, is aroused. A heart that is filled with the service attitude is qualified to achieve knowledge of the Supreme Lord, and, after achieving knowledge, it becomes fixed in the service of the Lord.

 "Are such shivering, such tears, and such loud roaring possible for anyone other than one who is empowered by the Lord?

sakrt e bhakti-yoga nayane dekhile

"Krsna will never forsake even one who directly sees such exalted devotional service exhibited by Lord Nityananda."

Krsna can never leave the fortunate servant who sees such mental and physical transformations of love in the course of Nityananda's service.

bujhilama-isvarera tumi purna-sakti
toma' bhajile se jiva paya krsna-bhakti

tumi kara catur-dasa bhuvana pavitra
acintya agamya gudha tomara caritra

toma dekhibeka hena ache kon jana
murtimanta tumi krsna-prema-bhakti-dhana

tilardha tomara sanga ye janara haya
koti papa thakile o tara manda naya

bujhilama-krsna more karibe uddhara
toma hena sanga ani' dilena amara

mahabhagye dekhilama tomara carana
toma bhajile se pai krsna-prema-dhana"

nityanande stuti kare-nahi avasara

"O Nityananda, I have understood that You are the manifestation of the Lord's full energy, therefore only by worshiping You a living entity attains devotional service to Krsna. You are able to purify the fourteen worlds. Your confidential characteristics are inconceivable and unfathomable. Who is qualified to recognize You, for You are the personified wealth of loving devotion to Lord Krsna. If a person associates with You for even a moment by chanting Your name even once, he will be delivered even if he has committed millions of sinful activities. I have understood that Krsna will deliver Me, because He has given Me Your association. Out of great fortune I have seen Your lotus feet. Just by worshiping You I will achieve the wealth of love for Krsna." Lord Gauranga was fully absorbed as He incessantly offered prayers to Nityananda.

Gaurasundara was fully absorbed as He offered incessant prayers to to Nityananda. He said, "You are the full manifestation of the Lord's energy and the personification of the sandhini-sakti. Just by serving You a living entity's propensity for serving Krsna is awakened. O Nityananda, You are capable of easily purifying the seven upper planetary systems of Satya, Jana, Mahah, Tapah, Bhuh, Bhuvah, and Svar as well as the seven lower planetary systems headed by Atala. Your activities are beyond the jurisdiction of the living entities' mental perception. Your confidential characteristics are incomprehensible to the living entities. In fact, no one is able to understand You in truth. You are the direct manifestation of Krsna's loving devotion. If anyone infested with millions of sinful activities attains Your association for even a moment, he can never be called unfortunate. Though he is sinful, he is nevertheless most fortunate. I have clearly understood that Lord Krsna has sent You to deliver Me. One who worship You will certainly attain the wealth of love for Krsna. Since I have attained the good fortune of seeing Your lotus feet, it is to be understood that I have met with some particularly good fortune.

 Always chant the three most powerful Mantras in Kali-yuga:
 "Gauranga" (Gaura-Gopala-Mantra); "Nityananda" (Haladhara-Balarama-Mantra); and Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare (Maha-mantra) and daily read atleast 108 verses of Shri Chaitanya-Bhagavata or Charitamrita or Navadvipa-Dhama-Mahatmya & do the nine-day Navadvipa-Parikrama every year.

Commentary of Shrila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura to Aphorism 43 of Tattva Sutra:

"Therefore, when the advanced devotees ordain any new arrangements, they should be agreed as the religious code, even if they are not found in the scriptural dictums of the previous sages. This is also agreed by Manu."

Shrila Prabhupada in Cc Adi 7.31-32 purport:

"Here is an important point. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted to invent a way to capture the Mayavadis and others who did not take interest in the Krsna consciousness movement. This is the symptom of an acarya. An acarya who comes for the service of the Lord cannot be expected to conform to a stereotype, for he must find the ways and means by which Krsna consciousness may be spread."
