It's always fun and exciting to be a pioneer. Just remember - pioneers often get their wagons burned.

Go for the 15" Ti. It has speed, power and size. Plus it's gone through a few generations of burn-in. The aluminums are still in their first generation.

Also, ask yourself this - did you take good care of the pismo? Do you expect to take any LESS care of the new machine, whatever it may turn out to be?

re: 14.1" iBook resolution:

Same rez as 12" but much easier to read for long periods. I prefer the 12" iBook/Albook size but with bad eyes 1024x768 on a small screen is a bit hard to read. Part of the reason I use the 1400c for the 800x600 screen, better for me to read my code without having to squint. But as I said, I have poor eyesight.

The iBook doesn't burn us either she uses it 100% on her lap.

I've commuted by bike for years, and my TiBook has been along for the ride almost daily for two years. I've had no problems at all with it in my Spire backpack -- here in South Dakota I commute year round with temperatures ranging from 110 in the summer to -25 in winter. No sweat. The TiBook is a trooper. As long as you have a quality backpack, biking shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, I often use it on my lap a few hours a day. It does get hot but not really uncomfortable - only slightly hotter than my old iBook.

I really hate the 14.1" iBook. It's too big & the resolution is the same 1024x768 as the 12". I really like the size of the 12" PowerBook or iBook - it's light & easy to carry.

I'd buy the current 1Ghz TiBook because it comes with a radeon 9000 w/64M of DRAM, it can boot OS 9, it's the latest version of the TiBook which means it's the best, and the screen resolution looks (according to rumors) to be higher than the newer AlBooks coming.

I'm waiting to see how much the price drops on these 15 inchers when they come out with the 15.4 AlBook. May be a great deal while they last...

One question... why do YOU get the new book? :-)
My wife won the toss and got the 14.1" iBook, I'm stuck on the 333Mhz 1400c....

The iBook rocks, if the 12" had a PMCIA slot I'd get one of those... I haven't been blown away by the G4 vs G3 performance enough to spend the $$ on a G4 book... not when it seems every iteration of X is going to require hardware upgrades.

What about getting a used book? www.baucomcomputers.com have had some decent prices and machines lately...

Then I think you have already made up your mind. Good Luck! I also love the site. Read it daily.

Hi Rob,

I also have a LittleAL PowerBook. I use it mainly as a desktop with a 17" LCD monitor and external keyboard. I have only had it a short time but have had it out and about a couple of times. It's warm but not hot in my lap. It's much easier to tote around than my Lombard that it replaced. AirPort is great, zero problems. If I only had the screen on the LittleAL and not an external I might lean towards the 15" but for me the LittleAL is perfect.
Tough decision...... both are great machines.

Ed, a funny aside....when I first read your post below I thought you said I could take out a second marriage and get the 17". That may be more accurate...

Actually, I would like to see the 17-inch PowerBook, but it is much too big to interest me. I want to actually use the machine as a laptop and to actually be portable. Heck, even the 15-inch machine feels too big to me...

Rob, after reviewing both the 14" iBook vs. the 12" Powerbook, they are really close. Separated by $200, The Pros would be: you would get a faster and G4 processor, faster memory and bus, Bluetooth, Airport extreme ready and a faster video card. The Cons would be a smaller screen and possibly a warm lap. OR you could just take out a second mortgage and get the 17".

Mike, do you ever use your machine in your lap? The machine I played with today was pretty hot in the store, but the idiots there had placed a mousepad under the machine to keep it from moving around in the security latch mechanism they use to tether the machine to the table, so I am sure it was running considerably hotter than it would on a desk or maybe even a lap.

I use my current laptop in my lap about half of the time, so comfort in that kind of working condition is important. Otherwise, the 12-inch machine looks like a good fit for me. I would feel confident hauling it around just about anywhere and it doesn't feel nearly as breakable as the current TiBook.

As for waiting for the next great release of the TiBook, if the current problems Apple is having with shipping the 17-inch PowerBook are any indication, even if Apple announced a new 15-inch machine tomorrow it may not actually be available until April or later. And it could very well be April or May before a new 15-inch machine is even announced. Simply put, I can't afford to wait that long. I need another machine now.

Thanks for the comments and insight!

It sounds to me like you really need a 12" or 14" iBook. They are built to take abuse and if you check out the performance comparisons to other Apple PowerBooks and iBooks you'll agree with me on the performance issue as well. Unless you use Photoshop a lot you won't need the G4 that is in the PowerBook. I have a 15" 800mhz Powerbook and a 12" 700mhz iBook. The iBook is the machine I use as a true portable. Also the iBook does not get very hot and there is no annoying fan that will cut in and bother you with it's noise.

Since this will be at least a $1800+ decision, I would wait for the new 15" ones. It will suck for awhile but I think you will get tired of the 12" screen in a hurry. Plus, keeping it for 3+ years will require some expandability. I just bought a new MDD Powermac in 12/02. It was $1000 more than I would have liked, but after having an iMac for 3 years, it sucked not being able to upgrade anything. Plus, with OS X, larger screen sizes are kind of necessary. Try to read anti-aliased text on that 12" screen for awhile. You'll see.

In the long run you'll probably be happier with the newer technology in the redesign of the 15" even though it's more expensive. Wouldnt it suck if apple put the 1MB of L3 in the 12" in a revision down the line?

I love my 12" PowerBook. I'm now using it as my primary system, although I use an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor when I work at my desk.

It's a nice, fast, pleasant machine, and I'm glad I bought it.
