They've had time enough to port XPress! I'm happy about every customer they've lost to InDesing -- and I suspect that there were many who got sick of waiting! IMHO Quark behaved idiotic and they deserve losing..!

I agree that monopoly is generally a bad thing, but quite frankly, InDesign kicks Quark's butt all over the place in nearly every area. Even if Quark finally does make it to the party and have a comparable feature-set, I'll be surprised if they can come close to matching the ease of use and integration with Adobe's other tools. I can't tell you how nice it is to just drag a .PSD file into your layout and have it just work. No exporting, no multiple resaves when you make an edit... it just works. And that's the reason I use a Mac. It just works.

Most importantly, though, Quark's attitude has completely turned me off. If they were a cool company that was just having a hard time moving things over, I'd give them another chance. But they've essentially said, "We're the kings and you'll take what we give you and like it."

Ummm... Not any more.

Just a quick followup here -- astoundingly, almost a month has passed with no new info appearing on Quark's site.

Adobe are pioneers in interface ease of use. The ability to seamlessly integrate with other software in the Adobe family N.B Indesign, PDF, PSD, makes the whole process natural & very functional. In all Quark have been duly left behind as an 'Xtension' rather than a elite product, these days anyway.

The company (newspaper) I work for will probably never upgrade to Quark 5, Quark 6,. Nor will they even try Adobe Indesign. They are so paranoid of technology to even give it a chance. Most of our macs here are on OS8.1. I think that there is like 3 with 8.6. I doubt I'll ever get to use OSX at work. I use it at home and bring alot of my workload home with me. OSX just works great. I have had no hard crashes since 10.2. Anyway, I guess the point of this rant is to share my predicament with all of you. Since I will never see mac OS X at work, and will quit before I use a peecee, I fear I am doomed to a life of Quark 4.0. I fear that Quark is still in the game for this reason. The company I work for can't be the only company refusing to catch up with the times. I don't think the macs we have here are capable of supporting os x.

I used to be the most vocal evangelist for Quark XPress (back in the 1990's) because of its simplicity, sophistication, and text handling, but I have since reversed that position after dealing with Quark's sales agents and customer service (which I found to be inflexible and supercilious). Also, I feel that InDesign has surpassed XPress' features and is now my preferred publishing application because of its better workflow and text handling. Sorry, Quark; after you became a big company, you lost your direction and snubbed your loyal customers who put you at the top. Maybe you can make it up to them with this latest release (whenever that is).

I've been working with XPress since version 1, and if you think their sales and support are bad now, you should have seen it way back then. They would never have become the standard if it wasn't for their features. Anyone remember the alternate apps of the time? Ventura Publisher for PCs, Pagemaker 1.0, etc. They were horrible, and XPress was the only real game in town for serious publishing. Quark seems to think they still own the market. They still might, but they have serious competition for the first time.

You select an object and press SHIFT+CONTROL+OPTION+APPLE and DELETE ....that should do it.

In Quark 6 for Windows I get a blank picture box when I try to import a jpeg image--sometimes (jpeg saved in Photoshop 7). It's possible that the picture will print (haven't tried) but the picture box preview appears white which is no good for designing anything. Anyone with advice?

I get the same in 4 when using JPEGs saved in Photoshop 7. They actually come out as PICT files and I can't work out why. Whatever, they don't show up on a Quark page.

Quark 6 for Mac. What a joke. Too many bugs. Betaware.

I'm having problems when I open files from version 5 some type faces will not display or print. Files are just fine in version 5. Try to superscript a registered trademark and the display is incorrect, but prints correctly. Tech support for Quark is now in India not the US. They are getting cheap and the poor programming is showing. It might be time to switch to Indesign.

I just upgraded my Mac to OS 10.3 and QuarkXPress to 6.1

I have a font that I use frequently. I'm trying to print to an HP LaserJet 4200, but it keeps substituting Courier. Quark is the ONLY program that will not send the correct information to the printer. Photoshop, Illustrator, and all of the MS Office applications will print it correctly.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I have been working in a Quark 6 file on my Macintosh for several months now. Suddenly the other day the file says that it cannot be opened by this version of Quark. It's strange because the other files I've created in this version of Quark are fine. Does anyone know how to fix this? More importantly how I can resurrect this important file? Thanks for any help!

I just got a job as a graphic artist for a community paper, and I'm having trouble with the justification of my columns. Sometimes it spreads words out, and obviously looks bad. I'm been playing with the kearning, but there must be another way. somebody please help! Thanks.

I'm using Quark Express 4.0. Whenever I use photos in my document, the file becomes huge, much greater than the sum of its parts. This makes it difficult, sometimes, impossible to send over my dial up. Even when I use collect for output, which finds and collects all the photos for one folder, the quark document, that is the .qxd is still huge. Why does this happen?

Hi all, I have a question about importing a Word doc into quark 4.1. My document has many footnotes that appear in Word as regular numbers, i.e. 1,2,3,4,etc. However, when I import the doc into quark, they all change to Roman numerals, i.e. i,ii,iii,iv,etc.

Does anyone have any advice how I can keep these numbers in the normal format of 1,2,3...?????

Your advice is greatly appreciated. The guys at quark said they couldn't support any questions for 4.1 anymore.

If your OS X computer tells you an application can't open it's own file, even if it's one you just made, your problem is the File Permissions. First, make sure you have the latest version of that program. Then, go to the Utilities folder and run Disk Utility. Click on your main hard drive and select Repair File Permissions. This has worked for me. You may have to keep doing it regularly. Try a program like Cocktail, that lets you run maintenance programs overnight. You set the Energy Saver Scheduler to boot the Mac when you're not there, then schedule Cocktail's Pilot feature to run your Chron maintenance utilities. Also, dump Quark and get Adobe InDesign. My firm and it's subsidiaries are doing that. Good riddance to Quark.

Somehow, I accidently did a fancy keyboard trick and now every time I draw a box in quark on top of an existing box, it automatically groups them. Can anyone tell me how to turn it off?

The placeholder for page numbers displays as <#> on
master pages. So just type it in on your master page.

I am preparing a reader containing short stories that will be published. So far we have done all the work in Word. We have encountered a problem that cannot be resolved in Word and I was wondering if it's possible to do so in Quark.

At the end of each story there are questions pertaining to the story. Some (not all) of the questions are based on text in the story. I would like to insert a reference in a question that gives the page and column number of the relevant text.

If editing causes the page and/or column number of the text to change, I want the reference in the question to automatically change as well. There should also be a reference within the text that says, for instance, "Question 3." If editing causes the Question number to change the reference to it in the text should change automatically.

Can this be done in Quark?
