I found this note recently among the stuff I was writing when I was first figuring out what I wanted to do with Rivals:
I'm flirting with cliché when I assert that traditional nudism aims to desexualize the human body. I don't mean to slight that worthy goal when I say that Burningman culture does the opposite and, not content with re-sexualizing the body, goes on to sexualize its architecture and transportation as well.
Male nudity is common at Burningman. there seems to be a particular class of men in their forties with deep all-over tans wandering around in sneakers and nothing else.
Female nudity is a somewhat more complicated business. You're much more likely to see, say, a woman in green glitter paint, a tiara, and elaborate feathered angel wings than you are to see a woman simply naked. To sum up, at Burningman, as a rule, male nudity is naked, female nudity is adorned.
The ironic upshot of this is that I, anyway, end up finding the sight of a simply naked woman at Burningman more affecting than the elaborate and glamorous naughty-bits exposing costumes.
