Great to see this website, Peter Bromwich put me onto it. Amazing to see Alan Dock's name, it would be good to contact him again. I'm living in Townsville, Queensland, and having a ball. Gilbert Rennie was pivotal in my life - wonderful experience. Have recently had dinner with Mary Fisher. Tony Lamont

I certainly remember you Peter! But its a strange quirk of memory - I like you, have not thought of Gilbert Rennie friends in decades, but when I saw your name, a bespectacled image of the boy I knew swam up from the murky depths of memory and there you were!
Must rush out now, but will write again, when more time.

Hello!
Can anybody help me to find my best friend from Chingola? I lived in Africa from 1969-1971. I came from Norway, did not speak a word of English, and I would like so much to find any of my friends. Denise, Janet, Kim, Susan, Peter, Mrs.Hopkins and her two twin boys, Gita, schoolmates from Chingola Primery school grade five and six, and Jim Jeena, Paul Fagg, Adrian and Moira - all neighbours in Humber Road. We lived in Humber road nr.9.Also my best friend, Sheryl Sanderson. She lived in Zambia longer than me, and we had contact til she got married in 1979(I think)She married Gary Atkinson and left to live in Boksburg in South africa. i would be so happy to find anyone from my school or neigbourhood rom 1969-1971!

Mark, I was also one of those Lusaka Boys kids who moved onto the new Rennie School at the beginning of 1955. I remember you somewhat as a dark haired slimmish boy? I tried to contact John Harris but the message bounced back form the e-mail address on the Rennie blog. Do you have another one? Wonderful prod to the memories seeing all those old names surfacing on the blog. Regards, Alan

Hi Patricia Harris, I sort of remember John (and Murray Steele) - my memory is going fast!! I was with the first lot in to Gilbert Rennie from Lusaka Boys School (the other side of the railway line) - that must have been '54 or so. eMail me if John remembers me: mark.zemack@internetljud.se I left Zambia for Sweden in/about '82 Was there a GR year-book for '54 and '55? Has anyone still got it? I have an old travel whatsit printed in the thirties with quite a few shots of Lusaka BrokenHill Ndola and a few of the other towns - I could try and do some copies if anyone is interested. Best regards, Mark

Does anyone have information suitable to create a biography of Gilbert Rennie School's namesake? He was Sir Gilbert Rennie (1895-1981), KCMG, Governor and Com. in Chief, N. Rhodesia ('48-54), then 1st High Commiss. in UK for the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland ('54-61). I am sure there must be many who would like to see something developed, and perhaps there are still people who remember him directly, as I do, having worked as Assistant Projects Officer, for the FAO UK Freedom From Hunger Campaign in 1965-66, in London, where Sir Gilbert was Chairman. If sufficient data is assembled using this Forum, perhaps a documentary film could be funded and developed, using photographs, plus new footage at actual locations linked to him, and file footage from his appearances at significant public events, now held by the BFI. If anyone would like to discuss this further, please send a message to melcir@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Hi, Williams House, 1965-66. Rennie was already Kabulonga when I arrived, my 'O' level maths Cert tells me. I re-did Maths halfway through 1965. Barbara, was the Hockey capt. (your heartthrob) Mark Ellman, perchance? Don from Abercorn, who was 'Bo Bo' Dawson, also from Abercorn? For the record I was in both Hamlet and Agammenon, produced and directed by Mike Etherton, the Rennie English Master. Regards, Steve Brown

Just discovered this Forum. Glad I did. This is addressed in particular to Hamish Macdonald concerning his message No. 4 on 01-25-2003. I was also born in Kasama in 1953 (17th July) and I recall the name Hamish Macdonald. My father was in NR from 1935 and was DC Kasama when I was born, then Mongu and then PC Broken Hill from 1959. Interested to hear from anyone who knew my parents and maybe remember my brother Alan (born Lusaka 1948) or myself. I live in London.

Try adock@worldbank.org Also some old information on the days at Kabulonga - Gilbert Rennie School magazines - can be downloaded from http://homepage.mac.com/wallerc/grs/FileSharing59.htmlThe 1956 edition may be most relevant. Hi There
I am trying to reach Alan Dock or Murray Steele on behalf of my husband John Harris who was at Kabulonga in 1955(ish). He has talked about his days at Kabulonga so often and wonders what happened to Alan Dock in particular.
John has serious heart disease and would be so delighted to say hi to anyone who remembered him. I would too though I never met any of his pals We have photos of him and various others including Hilary, Janet who's last names I don't know.
Please let me know if you have any contacts. We would be so grateful.
Many thanks
Patricia Harris

Stumbled upon this when had nothing better to do. I was a Denny bloke from 1962 to 1967 Reading the messagres about the great food strike. I remember that the first day of the strike we were given corn flakes for breakfast. Made a change ffrom sadza! I remember Tony Lamont's method of ensuring he had kettle boiled in time for break by wiring up the hands of an alarm clock!! I am now living in England with wife and grown up family. I recently made (and lost) contact with Bob Eglington, but where is my mate George Reeve from Mazabuka?

Hello Everyone, At GRS from 1957 to 1962. All that time at Herbert Stanley Hostile. Don Hofmeyr was a great housemaster. Anybody else ( a pupil or teacher) around at that time? I have GRS school magazines from 1956 to 1962. Does anyone have copies from outside those dates who's like to scan them and make available to the rest of us. Anyone want copies of those I've got? Cheers, Chris

Phillip, I'd be most grateful if you'd let me have Tony Lamont's e-mail address, we were both at Luanshya High before attending Rennie. While Tony was doing his early training he used to work at the African hospital in Luanshya (known as Roan Hospital) where he did almost everything short of heart transplants!! The patients knew him as the Bwana New Dokitor. Steve Brown brown-sg@tiscali.co.uk

There was definitely a food strike during my time at Rennie (1962 and 1963) so if others remember one later, there must have been two (no surprise considering the food). Anyone here remember when they gave us grapes for afternoon snack and some of us, following our organic chemistry textbook, tried to make wine? Gary H's bottle exploded in the middle of the night, embedding shards of glass in the walls and ceiling of his study and leaving a "pub" aroma that lingered a long time. After that Mr. Todd took to sending us off to bed by saying "Time, gentlemen, please" like a bartender at closing time.

I was in Denny Hostel in 1966, the last year that A and M levels were offered in Zambia. I can confirm that the Name of the school was changed in 1965, and that the famous food strike was in 1966. I recall two other high points of that year:- There was a big braai on November 5; an outside observer would have thought the school was under attack, there were so many firecrackers set off! There was a production of Hamlet (the M-level set work)in which the grieving Prince of Denmark had a strong South African accent. Tony Lamont (and where is he now?) built a hot air balloon as a promotion for the play.

Hello Philip, Great to hear from you.I trust all is well.I have lost touch with most of the mob.A lot of us moved down to Maritzburg varsity & moved on from there.I hear occasionally of some of the people turning up in strange places throughout the world.I think the graduates of GR specialised in wanderlust cum laude. My work takes me back to Zambia from time to time.I paid a visit to GR for old times sake, what a shock. The local told me that we white Zambians must come back & fix it up.My reply "you f****d it you fix it" Give us a shout some time on my e-mail adress

Hi, If any remember me I would love to hear from you. I arrived in Lusake in April 1952 aged 7, started at the old Lusake Boys School, moved on to the New Lusaka Boys School at Longridge (?) and then onto Gilbert Rennie, leaving November 1961. Got myself back to Africa two years ago (Cape Town) a great feeling. Found Geof Mossops dad in Mossel Bay. My email addresses:- ian.jarvis@southernwater.co.uk or ian@ijarvis.co.uk

hi John, I remember most of the people you have mentioned. Are you in contact with any of them, and where are they? I know one of the Lee girls is in Cape Town and that Paul Edwards commited suicide in the States. I am living in Durban if you are in SA maybe we will meet one day. Billy

Don
I was at Gilbert Rennie between 1964 and 1967 when the family moved back to England. I was in Chris McEnery's class. Not being a boarder, I didn't experience the joys of meeting girls through iron bars! I do remember some of the tales of derring-do that the boarders got up to. (Hot air balloons... stamping Hoffie's head...)
The spooky thing is that you say in a later email that you are now in Chester. (don't ask... I'm replying to this earlier message due to email problems!) I am also a Cestrian. In fact, an old primary school colleague (Clive Puttock) lives nearby! 40 years on and several thousands of miles.....
Best regards, John Evans

Omilord! Yes, Phil I'll mail you - some Sounds 5 pix!
Don - what's your surname? I never knew the boys went on hunger strike! How funny. We just submitted ... Wasn't it dreadful. I'm pretty sure I remember Chris McEnery - I think he was my year. In fact, I THINK I have a pic of him at the pool ... I also (this is scary!) have a video (yes, yes, ok, transposed from Super 8 movie) of the Rennie pool on a Saturday morning ...
Our matron was Mrs Crosspatch (No! That's not right ...)Cosgrave. I distinctly remember 'apple-pieing' her bed one night. I was in Sherwood House.
Does anyone remember the Jean Rennie ghost? Dorm 1. It was TERRIFYING!
So, Don, you were one of the boys at the barred windows? Who did you visit - which dorm? I HOPE you weren't the lad who woke me up one night asking for Suzie?

Barbara I was at Rennie at the change over and spent many hours at the pool and bunking out to the girl's hostel. I hailed from Abercorn so probably flew on the same Dakotas. Went on to finish at International School and do remember Sounds 5+1 - vaguely.

See - I know your name, but ...? I was (what?) born in '52, so I went to Rennie in '64. How old were you when you were there? Do you remember Sounds 5 +1? I was the singer. We played Charter Hall, 20th Century, Turf Club - bleuch lots of places ... including Jean Rennie !!!
I'm trying to remember other 'Rennie' names... Does anyone remember Bobby Biberstein (LOL!) A transplanted American. My best friend at (Jean Rennie) was Genevieve Allenbury, who, by chance, has washed up a couple of miles down the road from me ... GRIN.
Do you remember the laundry system? In my case - (in Sherwood House), all my stuff had to be marked 'JSH'...
Also - I remember the GR boys used to 'bunk out' and visit our dorm windows .... Did you ever KNOW that we could open the shower room windows ... ?

Does anyone remember the 'Berlin Moor' between the two schools? The shared swimming pool? Is anyone in touch with Tony Elliott? My first boyfriend!
Anyone remember the end-of-term 'hops' in the Jean Rennie gym?
And ... WHAT was the name of the Hockey Captain c1967? Mark something, I had SUCH a crush - but I was only Form II!

I was a boarder at Rennie in 1962 and 1963. I well remember Jack Woods, Mr. Todd and Maria, the Polish matron. Also creeping through the ditches to the compound (out of bounds) to buy smokes, and our Friday night excursions to Woodlands - and sometimes to Jean Rennie - when they thought we were locked in for the night. I now live in Canada.

Hi Rob, Complements of the season to you and your family. Yes there are many fond memories of that time. I often wonder what the landscape now looks like. Next to my Grand fathers farm was a forest reserve that was my own special hunting area, I long to see the Carpet of trees, some times I get a hint of the taste of Wild fruits in my mouth. some of the fruit names, Marambas, Masukus, M`Pundu, Chi-sori, not to mention wild figs. a favorite of mine was the Palm fruit which grew on the old Slave routes. Happy Memories Johan

Hi there!
More for Murray Steele. Surprise! Surprise! How the wheels of coincidence turn. Am deep into reconstructing my teen years and lo! find at the number one spot on the the delightful Northern Rhodesia and Zambia (knew them both) website's Gilbert Rennie Message Board but you, Murray. Let's get in contact - and Alan Dock and John and Richard, the le Page twins. More people you might remember - Janet and Hilary Lee of course, Pat Hatton (whom I've met in her role as a wife around 1974 in Fungurume, Zaire) andher sister Jill. As for the guys, there's Paul Edwards and brother Bobby who live in Woodlands, Lusaka and Chris Jepp. These were the main players in "The Crowd", based around Rhodes Park.
Yup let's get in touch - and a great NEW YEAR to all message board readers.
Have fun! Aye,
John in the Milton Keynes, Bucks with children variously in Philadelphia, Oregon - and Darwin Australia

It was a pleasant surprise to find this site after trying 'Kabulonga Boys' School' on Ask Jeeves and only finding the Girls' School listed on the alumni website iot provided...
I was a day boy, both at the Lusaka Boys' School and the Gilbert Rennie site between 1953 and 1957. We had some outstanding teachers like Ted Stevens, and- mentioned in one of the messages below, good old Hoffy. I have kept in touch with the Le Page twins, and Alan Dock, but wonder how others in the 1957 graduating year have got on. I haven't been back to Zambia since 1966, when I left for the UK, bnut hope to get back for a visit one day.

Hello all, one cannot reproduce childhood years but replacing the past is not easy. I was in Woodlands Primary and then Gilbert Rennie. I finished at Gilbert Rennie, Dennie hostel, in 1966.
Van Tonder; Rowe Roberts; Hofmeyer and many others spring to mind (eventually) as older age marches on. I would be glad to hear from anyone from those years.
Nothing can replace those idyllic moments.Enjoy talking to anyone from then

I was at Lusaka Boys School from 1949/50 as a boarder having been moved from Codrington, Mazabuka. This was the tranisition era from the old boarding arrangements in Church Road to the brash new ones within sight of the girl's dorms - a strange innovation in those days. The school was still on the railway line, downtown. Are there any of the old lags still about and on line? I haled from Katete 60 miles SW of Fort Jameson - Chipata.
