Happy Pi Day. I wanted to share with you what we did here at IKM. All 5th and 6th graders were involved. I assigned 6 6th graders as my team leaders and divided all students into groups. Their first task was to name their teams and design a logo. Both needed to involved circles or things that were round. A few examples were Pienators with each piece of the pie being a teammates name. Ring of Fire and they had a fireball as a logo with their names in the center. Every station was given 15minutes and there were 7 stations in 4 different locations of the building. I will be sharing the packet with teachers at my E2T2 regional group meeting in April. 16 pies were brought in by 6th grade students. My daughter, mother, and brother all came in to help and supervise some of the stations and to cut up all the pies. At the end of the activities we gave out prizes for some of the events. Total time for this was 2 hours and 20 minutes. It went smooth and kids were great. Nancy Kloewer

I didn't get an attachment. The students are very proficient with using scientific notation (positive and negative exponents), but when I look for resources they don't give anything with a situation. I have found examples of use (like piano octaves), but they are simply examples.

Does anyone out there have problem-solving situations using scientific notation? All I can find are computation type problems where there is no context.

ITBS happiness: I was so excited to hear from my math students (in all three of my courses) that they felt like they tackled the math computation portion of ITBS via the use of estimation. SO many said that they estimated and found the only reasonable answer vs computing each problem. Even though they/I understand that this portion is strictly computation (without understanding) and doesn't count toward their math core, I was impressed with their INNATE sense to do just this. (In other words, I didn't tell them to use this strategy! It was ALL them!) Those are the small things about this job that make it so very enjoyable and rewarding!

I was asked to send out this link to all of you. As I find applets that align with my standards/benchmarks (or support/provide remidial assistance), I post them on the web. I have all of the sites coded. When I take a group to the lab I can send them to this site and tell them which of the applets I want them to explore. This saves headache of having to bookmark them or having them type in the address.
