Actually, there are quite a few shows out there with living animal anomalies, such as Jim Zajicek's Sideshow museum, John Strong's Animal Freakshow, as well as Ward Hall's World of Wonders. A lot of the sideshow acts have moved to the stage and theatres, but there are still plenty of working acts on the midway.
There are even Freakshows with REAL LIVING HUMAN ODDITIES, such as 999 EYES and the Brothers Grim Sideshow. I wouldn't call the freakshow down for the count, by any means.

hell-o. i am writing an article about carnival people who live and travel together throughout the country. was wondering if there was anyone out there who might be able to hook me up.

If you're in the bay area check out some events at the Odeon Bar for some freak show flavor. There's some ex-carnie folk working/owning/hangingaround there with some entertaining stories (just ask around). One guy has collected a great set of freak show memorabilia from his years in the business. His old boss actually worked with a lot of the actors in the classic 1932 movie Freaks
