JetBlue Introduces Free High-Speed Wireless Service At JFK's Terminal 6

-- Egalitarian Low-Fare Carrier to Provide Free Wireless Access for Customers --
New York, NY (November 12, 2003) - JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU) today announced the launch of free high-speed wireless Internet access for customers traveling through its east coast base in Terminal 6 at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport. The free wireless access will be available throughout the departure gate areas of Terminal 6.

JetBlue customers traveling through JFK's Terminal 6 can use their laptop computers or other wireless-enabled devices to access their corporate network, check email, surf the web or download files, all at no charge. The service, which the airline developed inhouse, is compatible with any 802.11b-compliant device.

"Our goal is to use technology to make travel as hassle-free and enjoyable as possible" said David Neeleman, CEO, JetBlue Airways. "We've worked hard to bring humanity back to flying by offering low-fares, friendly service and innovative inflight amenities, such as free DIRECTV at every seat, and now we're taking both the hassle and the cost out of connecting to the Internet with free high-speed wireless access for all at JFK's Terminal 6."

With this new service, JetBlue customers can now take advantage of free high-speed wireless access on both coasts, as complimentary wireless access is also available at JetBlue's west coast base at LA/Long Beach Airport by the City of Long Beach.

JetBlue is a low-fare, low-cost passenger airline, which provides high-quality customer service. JetBlue operates a fleet of 49 new Airbus A320 aircraft and is scheduled to place into service another four A320s by the end of 2003. The airline recently placed an order for 100 EMBRAER 190 aircraft with options for an additional 100. The first EMBRAER 190 is scheduled to be delivered in mid 2005. All JetBlue aircraft feature roomy all-leather seats each equipped with free live satellite television, offering up to 24 channels of DIRECTV® Programming at every seat.*

Based out of New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport, JetBlue currently operates 194 flights a day and serves 22 destinations in 11 states and Puerto Rico and plans to commence service from Boston, Massachusetts beginning January 7, 2004.

*DIRECTV® service is not available on flights between New York City and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Thank Zeus! I'm sitting in one in Chico, CA right now. It's saving my azz since my home DSL is kaput and I need to get some work done.

mad, yep, but the hipsters at spider house still have nothing (all the neighboring houses have keyed networks, though ;)). UT offers free service, but not all over campus, and you have to be a student / faculty with a login and password...

Mojo's wireless went away recently, I thought I heard... I don't think I smoke enough pot to hang out there anyways.

Not 1,200 but over 2,100 Starbucks. Download the PDF of all locations, because it is fascinating reading. They have a lot of small town and weird locations now -- not all L.A., New York, SF. I can't tell whether they have a hot spot at Big Bear ski resort or if it's another place called Big Bear.

Here in Tucson The Safehouse has free Wifi (installed it 2+ years ago :-)

They have better coffee than Starbucks (well, most independants do of course!), and put in 802.11 right before Starbucks and other local coffee shops did.

Now some other local espresso bars are giving it away too, so they added wired ethernet jacks, which has way upped the number of laptops in there, and jacked up sales quite a bit (and they have 2 fast desktops, one on each floor, to use for free).

It doesn't violate the Cox Cable Business AUP since they aren't charging for access :-)

I'm surprised more indie coffee shops I've been to around the country don't have both wired and 802.11.

CharlesV, didn't Little City used to charge for WiFi access, but realized MoJo's and other coffeeshops (as well as UT-Austin across the street) were giving it away and stopped charging. I guess that only makes sense for the Little City on the Drag, tho.

i signed on to the t-mobile service 9 months ago and did the $30 local service. it's a love/hate thing, on one hand when i'm at starbucks or the airport a lot its great. other times, i'm feel like i'm wasting money. it's only a buck a day if i'm in a starbucks --or sunning myself outside.

and i love the schlotzky's hotspots.

also, fairmont hotels at least had free wireless in their lobbies and meeting rooms. it was super handy when i was in chicago the last time. but last week in vancouver they asked me for a credit card. $10.95 CDN for 24 hours. it's still free for platinum members of their freq stay club. but in vancouver or toronto, the metropolitan hotels have free wireless.

In San Francisco, check out Maggie Mudd, a new ice cream shop on Cortland Ave. in my 'hood. The owners are nice and let me drop an Airport hub in there. Free wireless and yummy homemade ice cream!

BTW, I've been talking my posse on the www.unwired.cc list, and to the good guys at SOCALWUG.org about creating some kind of comprehensive directory of free WiFi throughout LA. No such directory exists right now. If anyone wants to pitch in and help us make that much-needed dream a reality... ping me.

Hey, Gabe,

I just discovered that the Omni Hotel in downtown LA offers totally free 802.11b throughout their entire property. There's a bar and a restaurant there, and ample space to hang out and work. Nice space. Not a cafe, but they deserve mad props for being the *only* hotel in all of metropolitan LA to offer free WiFi on-site to guests and patrons. Repeaters in the elevators and the maids' closets on each floor. Crazy. Healthy network speeds. Tested it out myself last week.

I've been looking for good places in Los Angeles to hang out and "work" on my laptop. Wifi is nice. Free wifi is nicer. Right now, the only place I go that has wireless access is Insomnia Cafe. Nearby is Stir Crazy, which is also good for coffee, but not for laptops. Anyone have suggested places to visit?

Xeni, Susannah, Mark, you're all in LA quite a bit (I think), where (if anywhere) do you go for this sort of thing?
