hey i am after a very detailed dead looking tree. Similar to the one on Val Kilmers back in The Sultan Sea. I'd love its bare branches to swirl around upwarwds and outwards in twisting movements that also intwine together.

Well we certainly all have something in common.. we like trees as a tattoo design, I found this site looking for a picture of a good tree for a tattoo, how many others found it this way? anyway.. Im really fascinated by trees as an artist I am painting them in all sorts of circumstances, my boyfriend is always saying that I constantly point out good looking trees.. I duno why.. they just capture my attention in all their silent beauty.
they are majestic, they have many years of looking upon us, and yet a story untold, they can look gothic and dark, they create atmosphere, they protect us from the forces of nature, and they create the air we breathe, there is certainly something special to say about trees,we owe alot to them, these quiet gentle living things.

JD-good luck to you. While I was looking around for mine I found that the Celtic tradition has a tree based zodiac setup. You might want to try checking out the different types of trees they have and especially for what would be your sign and see if you dig that. I can't remember the site I found it on but I'm sure if you do a google search you could find it. Best wishes!

Interesting thread. I'm working an a tree of life inspired full back piece to go with my other Celtic work. I've got a 'Pat Fish' style knotwork root base that works into a more tribal looking trunk and limbs, but my problem is finding the right leaf look to go with this. Anyone have a good reference.

What about the tree in the Giving Tree By Shel Silverstein? (Before it gets all cut up of course) I think its appealling and comforting.

See if you can get your hands on an old "Book of Shadows" that has artwork. I used to have a copy that was passed to me from another member that had beautiful artwork from the person who copied it before me but alas it was lost in a fire. Better yet, go to the forest, and draw one your self.

I was also going to suggest the Shaker tree of life. There is one on this page (it's not the best though): http://www.shaker.lib.me.us/library.html --it is kind of interesting to contemplate how a Shaker would react to a tatoo...

I would go with a design that includes roots, kinda like this or this. Of course, not so picture like, more line arty. I kinda like this one, too. That's a bit wide, but it could easlily be done in a more vertical shape. I wish I had the time, because I think it would be really cool designing that tat for you. Good luck finding the one you want, and let us know which you go with.

There's always the Shaker Tree of Life, although I have to wonder what the Shakers would make of a full-back tattoo. ;)
