Hi Cory,
Re this passage:
"Gibson is no technologist, he's an accomplished and insightful social critic ... and he treats these items from the real world as metaphor. But ... Gibson's metaphorical treatment of these technologies will date this very fine book".
It would seem this comment is, in retrospect, is a bit unfair. I suspect that many folks are now getting very intimately antiquated with keystroke loggers as the proliferation of malware continues.
Watermarking would seem to be a ideal way for the creators of the footage to preserve their copyright on the "footage" without using DRM. Indeed watermarking may be the solution to DRM many of us are looking for.
These elements in the plot seem quite prescient to me and seem to point to where we may be heading.
Kind Regards
Simon

sorry to be petty but.... I mostly enjoyed the thing but my darker self started to count the number of times "mirror world" was used in the story after instance number 36 I had to put it down.
Like listening to acrylic fingernails scraping across Anti-glare, 25% haze, 3H hardness LCD panel surface.

This should be old news by now, but you can find plenty about Pattern Recognition and all things Gibsonian at williamgibsonboard.com...a blog from W.G. (although it's summertime, and postings are becoming scarce(r)), a community of fans, and more spoilers, if you want them, than you can shake a stick at. Don't worry, 'though--they're in their own section. Enjoy!
