Well, we will see how Natalie does working with her Pismo tonight after I did some unplugging of things and such. I did run the hardware test disk and it found no problems with the machine, but in my years of working with Macs I have yet to have the hardware test disk give me any decent feedback, even when I knew for sure that there was a hardware problem.

Thankfully, to this point, I have yet to have a Mac actually die, so I am curious how things will go with this problem. Our Macs in the past have simply grown too old to remain useful in our work

I just bought a new 1ghz Ti book 2 weeks ago. (decided against the 12" for various architectural reasons) But I learned from mine and others' mistakes - I bought a 3yr Applecare agreement. For desktops, it's not that big of an issue and will usually pass it up. But on a laptop - never will I own one without Applecare again. They simply take more abuse.

Rick,

You know, I may have that disc...I will take a look at it. I am definitely not eager to rush out and get a new machine, but so far I have run through the basic tests and simple fixes that I can do without spending money to blindly try to fix things. The truth is that since this machine is out of AppleCare I am handling the problem much differently than I would with my own Pismo, which has AppleCare through October.

I'll go try some other testing...

Rob,

Do you have a hardware Test CD from the OS X disk set? Might try running that if so. It'd be a shame to buy a new PB if this is something simple.

Rich,

It is tempting, except that I have a feeling that the problems with her machine may be more than simply the LCD. This afternoon she had the problem happen again, but this time it wouldn't even reboot and fix the problem. I had to reset the power manager and I also took out and reseated the upper-most RAM card and then the machine restarted...

Had the same problem with my TiBook (it would periodically black out, with the frequency increasing over time until it would only stay lit up for several seconds)... luckily i was still covered under AppleCare and they repaired it... the repair note said it was some kind of connection to the backlight...

FWIW, I was told by a local mac repair shop that _all_ powerbook repairs are sent back to apple for the actual work...

My iBook has suffered a similar fate. Although it is still usable. I can, and do, use it on video mirror all the time (not really portable any more!!)

Threads on Apple.com Support forums have found that quite a few users have suffered exactly or similar problems - i haven't looked at the pismo pages. It turns out that in general the problem stems from a failed backlight, generally caused by wiring having worn away around the hinge.

This is probably more specifid to the iBook but the backlight issue sounds like it could be relevant. Can you shine a torch through the 'lid' and light up the screen? If so then it's prolly the backlight.

Reports say that Apple will repair for the standard fee of £350 (I think $300-400 in the states... do not convert the sterling figure) and the 'book is then pretty much refurbed with new parts all over for that fee.

I've yet to do this as I cannot do without it for lonfger than a day right now.

HTH

Thanks for the reply, Joe. Yeah, it is a disconcerting problem. In our case, my wife's Pismo is out of AppleCare, so any repair, if possible, will be paid by us. LCD repairs are not cheap, even if you try to do the work yourself.

My worry is that either the LCD is going bad, the backlight is nearly burned out, or that there is a problem on the video circuit. I seem to remember that the video circuit on a Pismo is soldered onto the motherboard, which would make the prospect of replacing it very costly.

Maybe this will force me to give my current Pismo to my wife and consider buying a new PowerBook for me...

Rob,

Not sure what's going on with your wife's Pismo, but let me pass along this. Your description of the LCD perfectly matches what has happened to my daughter's new iMac! Same symptoms and I have only found that a reboot cures the problem.

It happens very infrequently but it has happened enough for me to get very concerned. Keeping my eye on the problem before I am forced to return the machine to Apple.

Joe
