* 30-Day Shred
* More weight and other moves - crunches, lower body, and others
* Yin Yoga: Hips and Pelvis (1 Hour)- I really like this DVD.

Rachel Jane, yep, I'm already missing my instructor.
The dc miss her also, since they take yoga classes w/her as well (not at the same time).
Oh well, September will be here before we know it!
Plus, we'll be on vacation from late July to late August.
Good for you for doing the Shred. Yes, I was quite sore at first as well.
It takes quite some time to adjust to. There are 2 moves in particular that are really hard for me.
I use 3 types of weights in this.

Tip for me (maybe others will find this helpful), but this approach has always worked for me.
I think I read this a few years ago in GH magazine.
It's all about getting a bit angry about being overweight.
I myself need to get angry before I start to make changes. Otherwise, I get too comfortable.

"Focusing on the negatives is valuable, because people don’t change when they’re comfortable.
Write 'Dear Me' letters, where you express everything you hate about your weight problem.
Include as much detail as possible, like:
* I can’t get down on the floor and play with my grandchildren
* I can’t keep up with friends when we travel
* I don’t like the way I look in pictures
* I hate the fact that so many of my clothes don’t fit me
* I don’t like the fact that my face looks fat and I can’t tie my hair back.
* I’m tired of having sore and achy knees"

Dh forced me to get more sleep and wouldn't let me wake up as early as always. So no AM workouts for me today. I may do something later - swim w/the dc before the sun is too strong. But definitely this afternoon, as I have been doing for most days and a little over a week now, but not recording, is working out at our little fitness room w/dh. Let me just say, he's almost like Jillian Michaels when it comes to pushing me to my limits. He really gets me working. And he's warned me to watch out for today onwards, since he's going to give me cardio the likes of which I've never seen before ...

Rachel Jane, I wish I had a Bowflex!

Tip for working out in your 40s:
* One hour of weight training 3 days a week,
* 45 minutes of cardio 5 days a week. Take one day off.

This is the decade of the triple whammy: gravity, hormones, and yet more slowing of metabolism as lean muscle mass continues to decrease and body fat increases. Even women who don't put on a pound may expand, according to Pamela Peeke, MD, author of Body for Life for Women. "After 40 and certainly after 50, virtually all women find that they gain fat more easily in the torso—below the bra, through the triceps area, on the back, and in the belly," she says. "You're not doing anything wrong; your body composition is changing."

Cardio work at least three days a week is still important for keeping weight under control, but resistance training is crucial now. "Women should be doing more weight training—and really going for it," says New York City based celebrity trainer Kacy Duke, who is in her 40s. "You have to find the time to do it consistently and train hard." If you're just starting, says Peeke, "you must learn proper form—take a class, get a trainer, make sure someone is there to correct you so you don't get hurt. And add intensity."

Certain body parts may call out for extra attention. "Pilates can help some with the midsection," says fitness veteran Karen Voight. To tone the back of the upper arm, she instructs, "get on all fours in a bent-knee push-up position, with fingers facing forward and hands directly under your shoulders. Make sure your elbows point backward when they bend, and lower only halfway, which works the muscle but avoids strain on the joints." Then there's the butt. "For that," says Voight, who is in her 40s, "I'd try squats with weights or stair-climbing."

Several yoga sequences
Crunches, lunges, other weight moves
Will be tortured later today by dh.
He's being my personal trainer for a little while.
It really is torture. No other word for it.
Or maybe I'm just weak.

My goals today:
* To try to juice (which has been really hard for me to fit in lately).
Juicing takes too long, but it makes me feel sooo good.
* Avoid sugary drinks (have been avoiding them for some time now)
* To take all my usual supplements as well as the following,
which I take about 3-4 times a week:
CoQ10 (cardiovascular benefits)
Kelp (thyroid and metabolism)
Vitamin E (d-alpha only, NOT dl-alpha!)
Garlic (cardio and immunity)
Specific one for Hair, Skin, and Nails (been noticing a bit more hair loss lately).

Negin, the bowflex is just like any other tool, you gotta do it to see results. LOL!

Yesterday DH and I went and watched the sunrise on the beach and took a two mile walk. In the afternoon, I did some freestyle training with Frazz that definitely counted as working out. Then DH and I did the shred dvd together. I was all proud of myself for being able to do all of the push ups, but realized it was because I'd been using lighter weights for the strength segments (DH was using the heavier ones). LOL!

Swim: 1 Hour
I feel completely wiped out. All my muscles are sore from yesterday's workout w/dh.

Rachel Jane, I LOVE sunrise walks. But we love on the sunset side. :)
Sunsets will do also!

Reminder today from Geneen Roth's book, "When You Eat at the Refrigerator, Pull Up a Chair":
"Eat a hot meal every day. Hot meals are real food. Hot meals nourish you.
A Snickers bar tastes good, but after you've finished it, you don't feel as if you've eaten.
So you go scrounging around for more.
If your life is arranged so that you don't have time to eat a hot meal every day
- even if it's soup or scrambled eggs - it's time to question your priorities.
Diet sodas, salads, cookies, chips, protein bars, or frozen yogurt are not food.
Neither, although hot, is coffee.
One hot meal a day is a basic necessity.
Not only to nourish your body, but to give your unconscious the message that you've had it with leftovers."

Hey everyone! I have been trying to walk everyday. My routine got a little messed up with graduation. ;) But it was worth it! This morning I got 30 min of power yoga in. I am hoping to get another walk in too.

I hope you have fun with your trainer Negin! :)

RJ, sunrise walks sound amazing!

Miss you guys!

Hi ladies! I have still been working out. Lifting free weights and the treadmill. Last night, it went nuts on me, literally. I was walking, faster than normal but walking still. Then all of the sudden I was nearly knocked off my feet, running so fast I couldn't stand it. (Still in pain sometimes from surgery...) I screamed and started bawling. Dh came running. We toned it down and it eventually behaved. Ugh... that machine has the devil in it.

RJ - I was reading on a recent FIAR post about the Levity vitamins. Would you mind sharing where you purchase them? I think I'll try those next when my prenatal vitamins are all gone.

Tried out 2 DVDs (both died a little bit into them).
They're not mine. I borrowed them and knew they weren't very new.
Will be working out w/dh later this afternoon. That's the REAL workout.
* Bryan Kest: Power Yoga - this is THE weirdest yoga DVD ever.
The guy is like some sort of caveman in jeans.
I couldn't stop giggling. Fortunately, the DVD died.
Laughter was my workout here. My stomach was hurting I was laughing so much!
* Biggest Loser: Power Sculpt. Got through 20 minutes of this before it died. Good DVD. I am interested in MAYBE getting this.
Not sure yet.

Rachelmn, congrats on your graduation!!!

Rachel, sorry about your treadmill. :(

Hi friends!
I have been shredding, walking, hooping and (mini)tramping!
I don't think I am losing weight, but I am looking better ~ stronger and healthier. I keep thinking the shred dvd is getting easier, but thats only when I shred w/DH and he is using the heavier weights. I really need an extra set.

April, how is your class going?

* Jillian Michaels: 30-Day Shred
* Leslie's Walk and Kick

My goal today:
"Include lean protein in every meal.
Eggs, fish, meat, poultry, and legumes help you feel sated."

Rachel Jane, great job on all your workouts!

Yep, April, I also have been thinking of you.
I'm sure you're probably busy.

How is everyone else????
