I have a 12" Powerbook and have been very satisfied with it. The only glitch is with Safarai. For example, when I am using Safari and typing on Google or Yahoo mail, I am unable to use my arrow keys without the application shutting down. Do you have any ideas how to remedy this other than abstaining from using the arrow keys? Thank you.

I have had a 12" powerbook for a week and a 1GH TiBook for 2 months. The 12" has become my machine of choice. The 12" is easier to carry, works fast, has no fit or finish problems, has a better keyboard and trackpad, plays DVDs OK, has no charging issues, and 4 hours of battery life. The TiBook has a much bigger screen (useful when multiple applications are open), is somewhat faster, plays DVDs perfectly, requires protection between the keyboard and screen when closed, has about 3 hours of battery life, and is less convenient to carry about. The little Albook seems to be built better, but that may be an illusion. Airport range seems about the same.

Chris, I agree that both of those things are issues with the 12-inch PowerBook. But buying a 15-inch Ti right now is a tough decision to make. It is an obsolete machine. It doesn't have AirPort Extreme, it doesn't have built in Bluetooth, and it doesn't have decent AirPort reception. It is a better machine thanks to the Level 3 cache, but I would find it hard to buy old technology in a new machine right now...

Of course, what we really need is a forward-compatible 15-inch PowerBook, and rumors have been all over the place this week that such a machine is coming soon. Of course, even if an announcement is pending, it could be a month or more before real machines start to become available...

I just got mine this morning. It had the problem with the charge indicator remaining amber even though it was fully charged. I ran it on batteries until it shut down (which was about 5 minutes ago) and I'm now charging it to recalibrate the battery.

There are also architectural reasons why I chose a 15" Ti over a 12". How about the fact that there's only 256k of level 2 cache and no level 3 cache? Ouch. The upper limit of 640mb of rammo seems tiny to me too. Not to mention the 867mhz processor.

The 17" specs look awesome, but that is just to damned big to be lugging around. But if they sweetened the deal by adding dual processors to the 17", I may have jumped on it.

I guess it all depends on what you're doing with it.

More about these issues are offered on Macintouch in one of their excellent reader reports...

If you are considering buying one of these early production 12-inch PowerBook G4 machines, keep in mind that many folks are reporting that they are having easier times getting issues dealt with if they bought their machines through the Apple Store rather than through third-party resellers. At least until some of the quality control and production issues get worked out, it sounds like taking this course would be wise with this particular machine...
