Whoa, I thought this was a Cory post. The BoingBorg lives!

What a great sounding conference.

Xeni did a fantabulous job of moderating the event. She asked great questions and kept the thing moving at a good pace. She was glamorous and gorgeous, too, but I already knew that about her.

I took a bunch of digital pictures, which I'llm post here soon.

I *really* wanted to go to this event, but I really had the feeling that I'd have been persona non-grata. Stupid insecure geek that I am, I stayed home and played Vice City.

Being someone at the event (I was next to the guy who asked the last question), I do have to give mad propz to Xeni for moderating the event, but I felt things fell a bit flat. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I'm pretty sure that the panel, and arguably most bloggers, express themselves best in their medium, which happens to be a keyboard. To me, the discussion was best summarized as 'blogging's cool, we like it, you seem to like it'. Where was the debate? Also, I'd rather have seen Ev's announcements (Audblog and the Google purchace) detatched from the questions, since answering the question 'How does blogging intersect with community based web media?' with 'um....one other thing, Google bought blogger!' seemed a bit off.

Hello, Joh3n,

For the record, I did not know about the Google-bought-Blogger news until Ev blogged it and said it, right there on the panel. This was not planned. AFAIK, none of the event participants knew about this in advance, except for Ev.

I actually don't even think *Ev* was planning to announce it then. While the panel was under way, Ev apparently received a message via mobile that news of the deal could now be discussed -- he hung up, and evidently decided to spill the news at that moment. [Looks like I misunderstood. Ev explains exactly how it happened here on his blog.] Sure, it was a non sequiter from whatever the open question was at the moment -- but who cares! Sometimes, news just happens like that.

Thank you very much for coming to the event, and for taking the time to share your thoughts about it.

Ev writes:

<<I just got back from L.A. To explain the last couple posts, more clearly: I was at the Live from the Blogosphere Rhizome event last night, which was really cool, btw (more on that later). I drove down to go to the panel and hang out. While I was on stage, I got a call from Jason. I didn't answer it, of course, but I had a suspicion why he might be calling at 9pm or so on a Saturday night (he's a family man, you know). I picked up my computer from the floor, hopped on wi-fi, and found Dan's story. I knew he was going to break it in the paper today, but I didn't think it'd be online until late, so I couldn't talk about it. I made the post below, and then, in response after the last question from the audience, I asked Beverly, who was running the laptop connected to the projector, to go to my site and then click on the holy crap link. Everyone got quiet for a second while they read "Google buys Pyra." Doc said "holy shit."
It was the coolest culmination and synchronicity, wirelessness, and instantaneous publishing.

I haven't been online since that moment until right now.

No, wrong. Those of us stuck outside couldn't hear a damn thing, except the occasional clapping. And those of us with laptops (more specifically, there were a total of two, because everybody else left when they realized they couldn't hear anything) were still screwed; it turned out that the audio/video feeds were delayed, there were only about 20 available feeds at any given time, and neither of the outside bloggers had loud enough speakers to really make out what you guys were saying. And when we snuck inside to try to hear, we still could barely hear you. Maybe the blog panel event was good, maybe it wasn't. I'll never know because I couldn't hear it. I was very, very disappointed that for such an event, you guys couldn't get one measly wire to one measly speaker to pump the audio to those of us outside. Hence, the vast majority of us left well before the event was over.

next time, call me before you go, and i will give you a ride there, because i have a car seat, somewhere, i'm sure of it, i mean, i think, and i will strap you in it, and we can sing campfire songs along the way as i drive you there, if you like, or if your mom pays me $7/hour, and i will take care of parking and everything, and that way you won't be late, or else, if you really like being late, then, why, i'll stand outside with you next time, and repeat everything to you, right into your ear, or maybe just scream everything in your ear, whatever you like, unless, that is, you are deaf, i am not sure, are you?, in which case, that is a different story, but the other thing is that most of the time, if you come to an event late, and are left to stand outside, then, usuaslly, you really can't hear anything at all, and usually, if you were to complain about a lack of speakers set up special just for people who are late, a large, black male security guard who weighed, say, 312 pounds, would stare at you blankly, and if you said the word "wifi" to him, he might just way, "what the fuck?" to you, and so, maybe you should, instead, next time, have one of those big horns that people used to hold up to their ears in the olden days, before wifi even gave you the possibility, if not the reality, of attending an event to which you were late, and hearing stuff, or maybe not, i don't know, i'm not sure about all of this actually, except that, next time, let me just give you a ride, please, ok?, because you are young, and i want to help you, sort of, but, i am glad to know that, as you say, the vast majority of people left because of this, because during the panel, i was not paying much attention to the audience, and near the end, when evan said that he had sold his soul to the Russian, or whatever he is, and the American, like, Larry or something, you could hear a pin drop, because everyone had left, just like you said, and i didn't know why, and now i know, and so, for that, andrew, i thank you.

your pal,
kowpie

Okay, thanks for the meandering degredation of halfway decent English. You can prick me for being late, but we were coming from a hospital visiting a friend, and that takes precedence.<p>Ultimately, you're looking at it the wrong way. The point is, a lot of people wanted to be there, a lot of people were there, and you guys should have been prepared to meet the demand. Setting up one speaker and running a wire to it--a very low-tech operation, I might add--is not that difficult. But since you seem more interested in patting yourselves on the back than taking my constructive criticism and doing things better next time, I'll leave you in peace to your self-fellatio.

Now that's something Susannah has never tried, I'll bet! (If she has, maybe she can teach me.)

Damn. Susannah told me she didn't know anything about self-fellatio.
