Send a copy of Picasso's Guernica to UN members with a message that inspections continue and that the US make its evidence available to the inspectors! Guernica Campaign at www.louisvillepeace.org/thingstodo.html

Or Libya heading up the commisision for human rights at the UN.

Now THAT is IRONIC.

Paul...got you.

Funny how irony works...how we continurally invert things in our heads, sometimes we get more meaning, sometimes less.

sorry I missed it this time...but it makes me think that it is all f'ng ironic...

"The irony was forcing officials to walk by this uncovered painting while on their way in to discuss bombing Belgrade."

My point was that this is not ironic at all. You *want* to remind people of the horrors of war before they go to make decisions about war.

Hommerabi...you have things backwards. The irony was forcing officials to walk by this uncovered painting while on their way in to discuss bombing Belgrade.

Dinsdale, I don't think there is any irony in this at all... it's explicitly a goal to remind people that are ordering bombings of the horrors of war. It may be necessary, but we don't want these operations entered into lightly.

I don't understand what you mean here; are you trying to say that "Guernica" is a "light" painting? Or that it somehow reduces the gravity of discussions taking place in the conference room? And do you mean that the covering up of the painting is to remind people that are ordering bombings of the horrors to war? If so, I don't understand your logic. I would guess that a lot of the people who walk past that painting each and every day have no clue what it's about. I would also guess that the only comment they make on it is something along the lines of "Gee, I could have painted that!" Then they slap their partners backs and have a good laugh. Covering up the painting does not remind people to the horrors, having it in full view, and having people understand its history and meaning, will.

...Sad that whoever wrote this article thinks Picasso was an Impressionist.

He was a cubist, a modernist, but certainly not an Impressionist. Off in style and by about 50 years. Good grief.

tsk tsk

Paul,

I don't actually believe that it was a 'UN' decision. I certainly could be wrong, but I find the timing 'odd' to say the least. And at this point I fundamentally do not trust the administration to tell the truth about anything, large or small, important or trivial.

Ashcroft has a history of covering up those parts of our history with which he disagrees, ala when he ordered the covering up of the statues 'The Spirit of Justice' and 'The Majesty of Law' and then LIED ABOUT IT.

The symbolic similarities are so close as to argue, at least in my mind, against the explanation of coincidence.

So that is what I _think_ this action has to do with the current US administration...

Rich, what does this action have to do with the current US Administration? It's a UN decision, not a US one.

I did some work at the UN a few years ago, and noticed the Guernica tapestry (it's actually woven) right outside the door to the security council chambers, noting the irony of officials having to walk past this image every single day while discussing the bombing of Belgrade. I thought it just as well that all of us, especially those people, be continuously reminded of the horror of war, specifically bombing urban areas full of civilians. This is just too much....

I think that this marks, if it was needed, the official end to any respect that I had for the current US government.

The Ashcroft lies on covering up the statues was one step. This is the second.

The apparant triviality of the acts is what is so important. I expect the government to hold back information on the 'Big' issues. But when they lie about the little stuff they have gone too far.
