My Dad flew an Avenger with VT-15. Here is what I have found on my own about my Dad, John B. "Shanty" Chambers. In Cmdr Cosgrove's work and in the Essex home page there is a picture of the officers of VT-15. My Dad is in the front row, 5th from the left and identified as "Shanty Chambers. In the story of RADM Lambert, entitled "The Essex TBM-TBF Avengers", there is a picture of Albert B. Werdehoff, Lt John B Chambers and EK McNaught. That is my Dad and his flight crew, at least, I know McNaught was a crew member. McNaught was later wounded and a picture of McNaught is in the same article I also recognize my Dad in the film of the memorial service for Loyce Deen. He is in the front row on the right. I am wondering if anyone has any other information or source.

I have searched all the photos we have on Air Group 15 but cannot see your dad's picture. What kind of a plane did he fly or better yet was he in a dive bomber squadron or in a torpedo squadron?

Still looking to see if anybody out there knew my Dad, LT John B. (Shanty) Chambers. He was a pilot with VT 15 in fall of 1944 for sure and earlier.

I am interested in finding anyone that remembers Capt. Walter Rodee. He was the Commanding Officer on the Essex in 1952. He was my grandfather. I am interested in learning more about him. You can contact me at WRodee@gmail.com.

I was sending this message to Robert and Sullivan Palermo. I saw your note and wanted to shout out to Sullivan,Thank You for your service to our country and to my father Lt. j.T. Crawford , C.O. of Bombing 83. Dad passed away in 1997 after a 28 year career in the Navy. Earnie Hutto remained a close friend of my father throughout the years. I talked to Earnie for the last time in May 2010. I hope you are still enjoying good health, God Bless you.

I have a friend that was stationed on the Essex 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He wishes to connect with people he knew back then. He is 79 years old and his name is Merle Nicks. His email address is we2dragon@yahoo.com. He has the onset of altzheimers but his memory is still pretty good. I am sure he would appreciate contact from anyone who served on that ship but especially anyone from his time there. My email address is oldtimerleon@yahoo.com if you wish to contact me. My phone number is 913-250-5133. Thanks for any contact with him.........LEON

My father was Lt.(JG) Glenn Edward (Eddie) Mellon. He flew off the USS Essex as a bomber/fighter pilot as part of the Fighting Fifteen Squadron in the Phillipines from 1044-45. He passed in 1974 at age 52. I was not aware, until after he passed, of his previous history regarding the time he served in the Navy. I would like to know more on his service history. I do have his war medals...one of which is the Navy Cross and some documentation explaining the action that accompanies the medal. I would like to make contact with anyone that might have more information on my father. You can contact me at LazyJ52@aol.com.

My sincere "thanks" to all those who served our country past and present.

God Bless...

Sad Day for CAG 83. We got a double batch of bad news today as we lost Gunner James Reynolds this morning @ 10 am in Patchouge, NY. My dad Gunner Sullivan Palermo tried to call his pilot Ernest Hutto of Decatur Alabama only to find that Earnie left us in Mid-August.
Dad is still in good health but is hurting in the heart tonight. Jimmy was one of his best friends!
