i was given a NEC Versa LX laptop running Windows XP PRO because it was freezing after about 15 minuites. I discovered that the cooling fan would run on startup but shut down as soon as the operating sytem (WINXP pro) started up. It overheated the CPU causing the crash. The fan will run non-stop in DOS mode. I reformatted and repartitioned and then installed Win2000 hoping it was just a system software problem. The fan starts until the operating system loads....then the fan shuts off. Tried updating the BIOS with no luck. I dont know much bout laptops. I have searched high and low for an answer to this problem. You would be my hero if you can solve this for me!!

Just bought a used Toshiba Portege 3440CT laptop (Pentium III 500 mhz). I installed Windows Server 2000 from MS DOS. Th problem I'm having is that the display size only occupies the center 75% of the screen & the color scheme only lists 16 colors as an option. Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this?

I use a Laptop Desk and it works great on my lap, or at my desk. I did some research and didn't find any others that served the dual purpose. It spans my lap so I don't have to sit with my knees together. Then it folds in half to double as my desk top stand. And I can choose 5 different typing angles. Not only does it protect me from heat when using it on my lap, it also dissipates heat away from the laptop through the built in ventialtion grooves. (Pillows, boards and books cause overheating of the PC.) It has a non-skid surface and fits nicely in my laptop bag when I travel. It's the best!!

I use a koolsink (http://www.koolsink.com) for my Apple Titanium and find it works awesome. It's light enough and not very bulky to carry around... and, actually, it fits 'over' the ti-book as a type of protection from knocks and stuff. Quite an amazing little thing. Oh yeah, it keeps my laptop cool so the fan has never come on since I have had this thing.
And it was cheaper than all the rest. g.b.

I have one.. it is GREAT!! I do carry it in my bag.. not too much more bulk. I like it because it keep my notebook on my lap.. and not the floor!

you might try these laptop sleeves from sfbags - i got the gf one and she loves it. the sleeves are made with thickish neoprene, so it gives insulation as well as some elevation.

Yeah, I have one of those, too. I used to set my iBook on my lap, but (A) it got hot, and then (B) the display lighting started flickering, going dim then bright then off. Apple fixed it for free, it was under warranty, but they told me that setting the iBook in my lap might have aggravated the problem. The laptop should sit on a solid surface which supports it evenly, and this gadget does the trick (although so would a piece of wood or a big flat book).

I bougth something similar for my wife, this one folds out like the one pictured, or has 'legs' that fold out TV tray style. It also has modular accessories you can get for it, like a battery powered lamp. It also has mesh pockets on the side for whatever gee-gaws you have to carry. Very handy thing, but I know it ways more than 1 pound 6.
