Well, seeing that they've already added ads to Blogger, I'd say the first thing they are interested in is another nice place to drop Adwords ads.

Then, I think they are interested in using Blogger to help improve their search index. Blog posts tend to be filled with lots of obscure links, which Google may have missed with the regular spider, but now they'll be able intergrate more tightly with Blogger to ensure they don't miss any.

On top of that, many blogs are great breaking news sources, many scoop the national media regularly. I think they'll be going after this too for the news spider with the intention of creating very, very, breaking news (blog threads?).

Lastly, I do think we'll see some great Blogger improvements like you mentioned. Some we will probably even see soon, but for the most part I think the focus (at least in the beginning) will be on how Blogger can help the main Google index.

One of the qualities I most value about blogs is their ability to defy standardized categories. To be sort of sui generis, or to encompass multiple genres and modes, or to be one thing sometimes and another thing other times. Nothing duller than a "war blog," etc. For this reason I'd be hesitant to attempt to create a taxonomy that would attempt to find a place for every blog, and put every blog in its place. I wonder if there are way more comples and sensitive modes of tracking that could yield similar benefits? Hope so.

So Jeneane, you're envisioning that they'll just *do* Daypop?

Tom, I agree. And maybe I need to clarify my thoughts about standardizing weblog content. I think you understand that part of the imagined standardization is just to let crawlers easily find the common components of a weblog regardless of layout or software used. But I should be clearer about my last suggestion there -- that there could be recognized categories that form channels in the aggregate of all spidered blogs (and surely accompanying RSS feeds). The blog author could optionally assign each *post* to one of these categories.

The Group-Forming idea suggests a way to do something very similar, only on an ad-hoc basis, and I really like that. I don't know if Google would be as interested in that (initially anyway) if I assume their goal is to target AdWords at specific audiences.
