I'm not sure their snooze vortex can reach all the way across the Atlantic, but here's a couple that are doing their bit in the States.

Thinking about being a good citizen and adopting several cats from a shelter to give away as Christmas gifts. Not knowing a whole lot about cats, I wonder if anyone could offer advice on which are the best kind of cats and such.
Merry Merry!

Well, it started cuter, but eventually all I could think of was KITTEN from Sluggy Freelance - http://sluggy.com/daily.php?date=000709 for an early highlight

Very cute cats! My fiancee and I adopted a couple of kittens from the shelter recently, and they've improved our quality of life greatly. One of them, a black short-haired domestic named Zanzibar, has very strange white markings on his coat that form perfect rings -- like three smoke rings on his body. All the shelter staff and the people at the vet's office exclaim over him and say they've never seen anything like it, but there's a good chance they'll fade when he gets older, which is a shame.

Your new cats are lovely (though I see what you mean about the pot belly). Weight does vary according to breed. My husband and I have a Norwegian Forest Cat, a variety that can grow to 20 pounds (or more). Emperor Horton is 18.5 pounds -- sorry, I don't know how to put that in kilos. I have a great scanned photo of the shaggy black & white beauty, but I don't know how to put an attachment on this message, being new to the site. [PS: I review for Locus and really like your writing; pity I don't get to see more of it.]

Frigg is a variant on Freya, the Norse goddess who went around in a chariot pulled by cats. I've used Freya before. Mafdet is Yet Another Ancient Egyptian cat goddess, known for catching snakes and as "The Lady of the Castle of Life". My cats tend to be named after goddesses and any tom would end up named after an appropriately feline god. Charlie goes along with this!

A friend of ours had a couple of cats that were really fat. So he took them to the vet and said "I'm a bit concerned about these cats, what with them being overweight and everything. What should I do with them?"

"Use them as a coffee table," said the vet, unperturbed.

So I don't particularly think cats being overweight is too much of a problem.

Out of interest, why Frigg and Mafdet? (Mafdet sounds like something that's been spelled backwards, except it isn't.)

Well, Mafdet isn't so bad; she's a hunky girl, and while she's got a big pot belly, she gets around okay. But Frigg is another matter -- she's clearly carrying a load more than she ought to, for a cat of her size. If nothing else, neither of 'em can use the cat flap til they shed a couple of pounds. And the vet wants to do some dental work -- but doesn't want to put them under anaesthetic until they're a bit less overloaded. So I guess I'll take the vet's advice.

Having said that, cats don't generally suffer from heart disease and atherosclerosis the way us apes do, so it's not as serious as it'd be if they were human and carrying around 20-40% surplus weight.

Charlie: That's not a whole lot of overweight for a cat. Our old vet, who was a wonderful man and gave our Persian an extra couple of good years when everyone else had given up, said that he's not seen anything to make him think overweight is anything like as bad for cats as for dogs, for whom it is a serious problem. You don't want it to get out of hand of course, but unless they're quite small framed a kilo doesn't seem like much. My guys are both big though at around 12-13 pounds each.
