Wow. I guess all that waitin' in line at Kmart sure makes folks cranky. <smile>

I'm the biggest retail whore in the universe. I didn't participate in Buy Nothing Day, but I respect the sentiment of its organizers and participants--there's a downside to overconsumption, and that "we need space for values outside the commercial imperative."

Spend a minute on the adbusters site... read for yourself. BND isn't "buy nothing for the rest of your life." Most of the folks participating in this one-day action aren't urging a return to mandatory bartering and worldwide gruel rationing.

As you're boycotting retail sales this season, look back to a term you learned in 7th-grade history class -- the "trickle-down affect."
<p>
Believe it or not, when K-mart goes out of business or another major retailer reports poor sales, people lose jobs, and their families suffer. Not everybody is blessed with a non-profit or educational job. My job depends and our nation's economy depend on people going out and spending a little money this season.<p>
How some people can "manage conferences that explore finance" and still be so hypocritical as to support something like BND is completely beyond me. Xeni, can you explain how you can support this and still go around wearing business suits, lipstick, and earrings, all bought from a retail store? Is this like Earth Day, where we're supposed to recycle once a year?
<p>
By the way, Xeni, I'm a fan, but I just have to disagree with you on this one...

Anyone know of other cool DIY sites similar to thriftdeluxe? I love projects like these and I am always looking for new ones.

btw, I'm on explorer 5.2.2 on Mac OS X and I'm not getting images either for this site.

thriftdeluxe seems to look wrong to me. No pix to go with any set of instructions. OSX/IE 5.2.2

The link to the Adbusters site is wrong ... says "http://boingboing.net/www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd/" but should be "http://www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd/"
