Is one of these the right file?

And the two picture files that 'disappear' are:

Re: *Some* pictures disappear from the file.

I'm stumped also. Would you mind sending me your database so I can see the actual data myself? You can include some of the pictures if you want but I do not think that will be necessary.

If this is acceptable, please email your "C:\Program Files\nmCollector\nmgcsw.mdb" file to cjpryor@nmcollector.net.

Thanks Clay.

Clay

Thanks for the quick reply, Clay. I really like this software. Great work!
Yes, I see the text box at the bottom of the tab window showing the correct path to the picture. When I first load the picture, the path is fine, and the picture displays as expected. Then if I close the application, or go to a different record, then later return to the original record with the picture in question, the path text box says, "Error loading. (shows path)" However, the path is still the same "valid" one as originally entered, and if I reload it, it works fine, ...until I close the app or go to another record - then it's gone (again).

I'm stumped.

Re: *Some* pictures disappear from the file.

Since I have not seen this myself I do not know what the problem is. At the bottom of the picture window you should see a field with the path to the picture ... it should read something like "C:\Program Files\nmCollector\brt1.jpg". This is the location of the picture being displayed.

What do you see in that field?

Remember, the database stores the path to the picture location. If you move the picture it won't load.

*Some* pictures disappear from the file.
My pictures are all .jpg, all around 25-35kb, all 90dpi. They all load happily each into their associated gun/picture tab.
However, several don't stay there. If I go to another gun record then return to the previous record, the picture is gone, and I have the coyote back.
However, the other pictures stay exactly where they should and are available at the click of the tab.
Is there a naming convention that I'm not discerning, e.g., no spaces in name? (But I tried that with no change.)

Thanks for the observation. Everybody has to decide for themselves what they are willing to pay for this or any other product.

Price is a very interesting thing. I am offering it at what I believe to be a reasonable price when you consider all of the features, the free upgrades and the support. When it comes to software, support is very important. It can also be a very time consuming proposition.

Also, most software companies make a lot of money charging for upgrades. I chose to go against that market strategy and am offering all of my upgrades for free.

Bottom line is, as my grandfather used to say, "You get what you pay for." I am trying to offer a high quality product with support at a reasonable price.

Would any one else like to comment on this subject?

Thanks,

Clay

How do I transfer NM Gun Collector Software to a new computer without having to reenter all of my data?

You should NEVER have to retype your data with NM Gun Collector Software. You will need to complete two steps to get NM Gun Collector Software up and running on the new machine with your data. The first step is to install the software on the new machine. Then you transfer your data to the new machine. I am assuming that you have already installed the software on your new machine.

It's easy to transfer data ... and you should be doing it as part of a backup plan anyway (see above question). The key is the file named nmgcsw.mdb. This file is located in your installation directory (the default installation directory is C:\Program Files\nmCollector). Just copy the database from the old location to the new location. You may have to write it to a CD to make the transfer. If so, make sure that once you copy it to the new location you make sure that it has read and write privileges. Often when transferring files using a CD they come across as read only.

If you enabled the security, there is one more step. Simply copy the file named security.mdb as well.

This completes the transfer. The next time you run your data should appear.

How do I backup my data?

Backing up your data is a simple process of copying the nmgcsw.mdb file from the installation directory (the default installation directory is C:\Program Files\nmCollector)to another (presumably safe) location. This can be another hard drive somewhere, a CD, a zip drive, or whatever storage devices your system uses for backup.

I also provide a database utility to facilitate the backup and recovery process for you.

General Guidance on Pictures

I have captured pictures in a variety of ways but the biggest issue (especially if the pictures will end up on the web) is getting enough resolution without creating too big of a picture file (too big of a picture file results in very slow downloads from the web).

Therefore, I try to capture the pictures with as high of a resolution as I can and then use picture compression software to reduce the size of the picture file.

I used to use a standard video camera hooked up to a hauppenpauge WinTV card to capture the images. Then I would process the images through Adobe Photoshop Home Edition to reduce the size of the images.

Recently I purchased a 3 megapixel digital camera and set the image capture mode to email. This automatically captures the images at a resolution no greater than necessary. I then use Image Expert 2000 Premium Dell Edition (which came with my new computer that my old Adobe Photoshop will not run on) to compress the images a little farther. I have noticed that when using this message I can actually see a decrease in quality if I compress the image too much.

I hope this helps.

sincerely,

Clay
