"Why, then, should we grant government the Orwellian capability to listen at will and in real time to our communications across the Web?"
That is an excellent question John! How about you answer it, oh... USA Patriot act.. good answer asshole!
I sent this link to a friend, she responded in haiku

Yes, this is stolen.
If you are a Republican, and thinking of enacting a law restritcing privacy or civil rights, consider that Hillary could be in charge in 2009.

Much as with Bush claiming dictatorship was okay "as long as I'm the dictator", Ashcroft seems perfectly at ease with Big Brother as long as he's the one filling the role. Gilmore was right, use the dang crypto if you got it.
I'm still not entirely convinced the dead guy that supposedly won the Senate race in Missouri in 2000 wasn't Ashcroft himself, either. The GOP has been doing wonders with reanimation of dead tissue since 1980.

Well duh. They are the government now. When the question suddenly becomes "Why should we grant _ourselves_ far reaching power X?" the answer tends to be a lot different.
As an exercise for the reader, examine how the Republican insistence on decentralizing power and pushing control to the fringes pretty much went away when they stopped inhabiting the fringes and took over the centers of control. Medical marijuana initiatives Mr. Ashcroft? Amendment 9, Governor Bush?
