I'd go for an ad campaign that suggests that there are things to do other than shopping. More "Do something else!" than "Don't do that!"

Woot, that reminds me of a period during my teen years when I knew the plot of nearly every hit movie from the Mad Magazine parody rather than actually sitting thru the real things in theaters.
Actually, you also reminded me of my experience reading Need To Know... it's funny, and I learn a lot, but I'm probably missing more than I'm getting.
Stefan, should BND be scheduled for a day when nobody buys much of anything anyway? I guess you could argue that each person should schedule their own BND, and not tell anyone about it, instead of trying to make a big media-driven deal out of it. Eh, I don't know. I'm too old to get worked up one way or another over "we're going to turn around this horrible corrupt culture of ours by making one grand gesture" anyway.

Thanks, xeni, that makes sense. First time I heard it was in an Austin Powers video that I was emailed. We normally get the spoof here (UK) first, then have to figure out the reference. First time I heard "wassap" was in a SuperFriends spoof I was mailed. It was funny, but took us ages to work out.

Arranging for Buy Nothing Day on the traditional biggest shopping day of the year makes it an event for pious snobs. An in-you-face publicity grab rather than a serious attempt to encourage people to consume less.
I bought stuff today, not at a sale or to fill an existential void, but because I wanted to buy a gift for some old college friends I was visiting.

Woot, I'm no linguist but I think "fo shizzle my *zzle" originates from a sort of play language made up by African-american kids and teens.
the first reference I remember hearing was around double-dutch jumprope craze in the 70's. It appeared in a hit "urban" dance song around that period ("dizzuble dizzutch"), then more recently re-entered memehood when the hip hop artist jay-z had a hit with this song "HOVA" ("h to the izzo, v to tha izzay..." "fo shizzle my nizzle"...)
Just word games and street culture languagehacking.

Ah, my mistake--a quick Google search reveals that BND is apparently commomorated on different days in different countries. The US *was* today, and UK plans appear to be in effect for tomorrow as I noted in my earlier discussion post.
Xeni bad.
Xeni bad.
mea culpa.
for penitence, tomorrow I'll post some boingboingworthy links to sites about holiday gifts that cost nothing and don't benefit any multinational corporations or opressive regimes. And no, they don't involve popsicle sticks and pipecleaners.

Michael, "Buy Nothing Day" is Saturday the 30th (dude, like I'd forget that? cut me some slack, man!) There's a good article in today's Financial times about BND plans in the UK here.

What about lawn darts, and the "finger blistering, toxic fume emitting monster factory" (can't remember the name, it rocked).
