My child just graduated in 07 and didn't read that book. Do you think they really read the books before they buy them? I bet they read small sections that they are sent(excerpts) and then choose. There are so many good books to choose from and don't get me wrong,I think Kaffir Boy is a good book.

I'm glad to see I've got some people talking this is good. I agree with most of what everyone is saying but lets remember the school district KNEW what was in that book, didn't feel it necessary to inform parents for 4 years. I bought the book because we waited til the end of summer to find the book and I'm sorry to say paid $15 for it. I have lost all faith in my school district and teachers. Someone should have spoken up!! I still would not know what was in this book had my son not brought it to my attention. What else is being taught that we aren't informed of?

I think most of you opposing the postion to remove this book are forgetting one critical issue. We as parents have the right to intervene when we find that our children are exposed to material containing graphic sexual depictions (in our school system or anywhere else). It is the same for their admission into R rated movies or CDs with sexually explicit lyrics. We have to give consent. As far as Fire & Ice, you must be 18 to enter and 21 to enter Sensations.
Whether or not you find this book offensive is not the real point - it is agreeing that it is a parental perogative to determine if and when sexually charged material is acceptable for our children.
Your are right ?????, our tax dollars are not providing the book; however we are funding the salaries of those requiring the book be read. ....AND it is even more outrageous that the school would make parents pay for this book without knowing its content.
My son was excused from reading it so this issue no longer affects me; however; many parents with younger children are outraged that this material is being required in 10th grade. I simply thought that parents should be aware of its content and that it be parents' decision if their child should read it. Another point - Can't the school suggest another book, why this one in particular?

I am reading the book Kaffir Boy now and I feel it is ok for 11th or 12th grade but 9th and10th not.We have a fit about some books but FIRE and ICE shop is ok for the square. And of course Sensations and whatever else goes on there. Also, whoever it is who still whines about "Queen Krietz"as you call her,it is really getting old.Do you really think that the square is going to stay dark? Maybe you should call the electric co.and complain.I'm pretty sure they would love to hear from you.

How can you be appalled that money is being spent on "things like this" when the school isn't buying the books. The kids get the books on their own from the public library. In fact I bought the book for my child since all the copies were out from the library. That's the only money spent here and that was my choice.
I do not agree with that you're trying to do. Is your next step to fight the public library to have the book removed there because anyone with a library card could go in and rent the book and read it??

shadowolf330, I'm not going to get over the issue of Kaffir Boy and Yes it's just a book But as the parent of a minor child I have the right to decide when my child is to be exposed to material such as this. Maybe more parents should take a stand , our school has allowed this for 4 years, Doesn't that bother anyone? I know I'm not alone in this feeling why else would I have over 200 signatures requesting to remove this book. Also I have a problem with the fact our superintendent knew what was in the book and felt no need to at least warn parents. It makes me ask what else are our children being taught that we are not aware of. Home school is an option as well as cyberschool and both are being considered however I am a taxpayer and I am appalled that money is being spent on things like this. I am on the agenda for the school board meeting Oct 8th at 7:30. Please come and support your rights as a taxpayer and a parent , no matter how you feel. I'll be looking forward to see many of you there.

Denior student - re/msg 9629 and 9630, your grammar and choice of words is terrible. Better pay more attention in Englsih class. Check your use of the word "their" verus "there," smd the spelling of such words as "summit" instead of "submit."
Additionally, the correct spellling of "different," as in "Each child is raised different," should be "differently."
I cite more examples but your message is quite understandable. While you believe you are an adult and expect to be treated as such, the "real world" is much different than the controlled environment in which you now live. I'm sure you'll find that out when and if you graduate amd take your place in the working society.
Good luck, and stay out of the teachers' contract negotiations - you cannot possibly be objective when your world is dictated by the teachings of someone directly affected by the outcome. You may realize that you have been used as a pawn more than once without consciously knoqing it.

Stop your whining and complaining about kaffir boy, its a freaking book, get over it. If your child is reading it then chances are they are about to be released into the real world where mommy and daddy cant protect them from graphic novels and movies, unless of course your children are mentally retarded and this could have a lasting effect on them in which case theres always the option of HOMESCHOOL.

I attended the school board mtg. Mon eve.and found it be somewhat interesting. The subject of Kaffir boy was not on the agenda butI hope to get it on the next mtg. Please if you are concerned about what our children are being taught and the passage in the Kaffir Boy book disturbed you, please attend the meeting. There is strength in numbers, I alone collected over 200 signatures in favor of removing this book. I'd like help getting some more and also letting the school board know LITTLESTOWN PARENTS CARE about their children. My email address is fillyourbasket@yahoo.com I'd be happy to hear from you. Lets remember our superintendent stated he knew the content of the passage and only after this year's complaints agreed students will read the abridged verion for future assignments.

I agree with many of the parents who feel the graphic section of this book is not appropiate for our children to read. I too have contacted the principal, English dept, and the school boord members. I was also told an edited verion is to be used next year. But are we as parents aware of what Kaffir means -- read the Gettsburg Times, Friday Sept 14th. I am still opposed to this book because of the title, It just gives our kids another word to use and in this time when we are trying to unite our children and teach them that we are all in this world to work together we give them more fuel to harm each other with. I intend to attend the school board meeting Mon. and I hope other concerned parents do too. Keep in mind this book in is't grapic verion has been used in our schools for 4 years. At the very least our school board oews us an apology for exposing our children to this knowing the content. Also many parents may be interested in knowing that some of our educators have not even read this book! Please attend the meeting , What else is our school board exposing our kids to!
