can you be more specific? what other options? Verizon's Mobile IP service is $55/mo and much slower. what else is out there (must admit i haven't investigated this market in a while)

>but that $44/month fee seems insanely steep now, given the many other options that now exist for bandwidth-hungry wireless nomads

Others include free community WiFi networks (obviously no guarantees on access and bandwidth reliability), Boingo ($7.95 -> $49.95/month)... and companies like (http://www.groktechnology.com/)... the question for me is not whether or not their dollars-to-bandwidth ratio means good bang for your buck, but whether or not consumers will pony up the cash when mobile usage tendencies in US still center on activities that do not demand high bandwidth (= checking e-mail.)

I'll gladly sign up for the service when they launch in LA, but the service won't be worth the investment for me personally until they're also live in NYC, LA, DC...

There isn't anything comparable on the market. The closest you get is the tmobile $30/mo plan which is fine as you never leave Starbucks. If you need true mobility, you're talking about Verizon or Sprint's services which are significantly more expensive ($99/mo unlimited), slower and, based on a friend's experience, use much less mature hardware and software with all the "fun" that entails.

I'm trying to find out if they support Mac OS X now. I have the modem still, so It'd be great to get it running again.

I was fortunate enough to win a Ricochet modem and 3 free months of service during a promotion they did here in Denver. The service is great, and it beats the 33.6Kbps modem I'd been using by a long shot. (I live in an apartment building where DSL and cable modems aren't available; I'm too far from the switch for DSL, and the cable company that serves the apartment building is a small, nonstandard operator that doesn't offer cale modem services.) I've even managed to get the service working under Linux; I posted details to my local Linux user group mailing list, and will probably put up a Web page with instructions later. I'll definitely become a paying customer once the free months run out...

Jeremy - OS X shouldn't be an issue - the hardware was designed to show up as a standard serial modem. The process of hooking it up on my PowerBook using my old Merlin PC Card was simply plugging the card in and setting up a PPP connection using 3333 as the phone number. <5 minutes including the time needed to give them a credit card (before you've registered, any web traffic is redirects you to the secure signup page).

Someone mentioned that the new Ricochet just went through another downsizing. Are they in trouble now too? Say it ain't so!
