I think it's time to shut this list down, or else have a moderator filter posts. Isn't there a way to keep these idiots form getting access?
There's not even the usual bogus link for the Lord's Ephedrine/ Clonidine sites ;^)

Sorry for the last minute notice....I just received the info
Tonight at 21 Grand:
Bruckmann/Kaiser/Anderson/Walter + Smith/Aurora/Spirit
From the 21 Grand site: "Fascinating and indefatigable, Weasel Walter is most often associated with the "brutal prog" Flying Luttenbachers, and other jugular-throttling fiercely intricate noise/rock efforts, that one could call the musical equivalent of Viennese Aktionism. However, he is also an immensely talented free jazz improviser. Tonight's ensemble exhibits a broader dynamic range than other Weasel Walter jazz groups (i.e. it has its quiet moments). The Quartet includes Weasel Walter (drums and other percussive devices associated with free improvisation), Henry Kaiser (guitar), Kyle Bruckmann (instruments with reeds), and Bruce Anderson (acoustic guitar).
The second ensemble is the improvising trio of Aurora Josephson (voice), Damon Smith (double bass) and Spirit (percussion) "
Kyle Bruckmann -- double reeds Henry Kaiser -- acoustic guitar Bruce Anderson -- acoustic guitar Weasel Walter -- percussion - and - Damon Smith -- double bass Aurora Josephson -- voice Spirit -- percussion

Hello! Just wanted to post and say hello! My name is Chris, but my friends call me Silver Shoes. Dunno what to say. I've been a fan of Henry's since the mid 80's, when he penned a "Essential Listening" article for Guitar Player (in whence he mentioned, amongst other favorite records of his, he cited The Grateful Dead's Live/Dead, Tribute To Jack Johnson by Miles Davis, as well as titles by Derek Bailey, Ali Akbar Khan, Conlon Nancarrow, and Harvey Mandel).
After reading that time, I went to the library and found the LP It's A Wonderful Life. I borrowed it, and found most of it quite intriguing. I'd never heard anyone play guitar like that, and to this day, I'm not completely sure how he got a lot of those sounds.
So I've been kinda following Henry's music ever since. I even bought a copy of Moose And Salmon at the Downtown Music Gallery in NYC back in 98 (they had a copy of Protocol, I think it was, but I didn't have enough money to get both. When I e-mailed them later, they said they had already sold it, and seeing as it came directly from HK and was apparently the last copies HE had, hence, the chances of another copy turning fell somewhere between slim and none at all...but anyway).
Favorite records of HK? Well, I really like Lemon Fish Tweezer (especially since it has the title track of It's A Wonderful Life), as well as Outside Aloha Pleasure, and Those Who Know History Are Doomed To Repeat It. I also like Wireforks, too.
Anyway, I just want to say hello, since I just joined the list. If I can think of anything stupid to say (I'll try to avoid asking things like "Are you ever gonna reissue such and such", as I'm sure HK is probably sick of hearing that kind of things), I'll post again.

Derek Bailey - one of the greatest, ever - passed away yesterday, Christmas Day 2005, from his battle with motor neuron disease.
Since the early 60s he nearly created a wholly singular take, and possibly the root, of improv music and thought.

Gonzo, Paul Tingen posted this on his website (miles-beyond.com) on Friday 10/28:
"Earlier this month, Seth Rothstein, VP of Columbia Legacy, confirmed the release date of the Cellar Door as November 22 in the US. A week later someone closely involved e-mailed me with the message that "Vince Wilburn has put a kibosh on the whole thing again." Wilburn, Miles' nephew and a drummer in his uncle's band 1985-1987, is the leading voice in the Miles Davis Estate. He was also the person behind the first delay of the boxed set release. The latest word is that the release is abandoned altogether, but Columbia Legacy tells me today (October 28), that they continue to be confident that the set will come out, and that they are still hoping for a pre-Christmas release. Please watch this space for official news, and more details on the story behind all this, insofar as they can be revealved without compromising my sources."

Wadada has new material for a new YM! recording that he would like us to do in 2006. Likely, a smaller bass + drums + 1 gtr + tpt + perc + 2 keyboard players band. The band would be happy to do that if a label would pay for it. I don't see how we can afford to tour in the USA. Maybe a gig or two around the recording. Steve Smith and I have been trying to organize a European tour for summer 2006, which big festivals could support. But it's getting late and I think it may be too late for 2006. -HK

Now available on the Live Music Archive: David Gans and the Broken Angels "The Dead Experiment" Blake's, Berkeley CA April 15, 1997 The Broken Angels began as an ever-changing confederation of Grateful Dead-influenced musicians, organized by David Gans, which first came together in "The Dead Experiment," a regularly scheduled series of jams on Tuesday nights at Blake's on Telegraph in Berkeley. The weekly series ran from January through September 1997. This performance features Henry and Dose Hermanos (Tom Constanten and Bob Bralove). Some interesting jams (and plenty of Dark Star). It's all Dead covers except for a Dr. John song and an original by Bob and Henry. http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=26803

Hi all, Just a quick note to let you know about a new track that HK and Scott Colby have done for the forthcoming Cordelia Records "Beyond the Sea" collection of bent surf tunes. From Cordelia Records: NOT YOUR STANDARD SURF TUNE An unusual surf music compilation proposed by UK-based Cordelia Records was an irresistible opportunity for innovative guitarist/producer Henry Kaiser and slide guitarist Scott Colby. The compilation, slated for release in late summer 2005 as "Beyond The Sea," consists entirely of cover versions of well-known tunes that nobody would expect to hear performed as surf music. (See < http://cordelia.stayfree.co.uk> for details.) Kaiser and Colby enlisted bass player Allen Whitman and drummer John Hanes, and the quartet convened at The Creation Lab to record under the band name of Pegleg. The track they recorded is a twisted medley that interweaves the jazzy pop of Steely Dan's "King Of The World" with "Dance Of Maya," a landmark fusion recording by the Mahavishnu Orchestra. ---- The Cordelia Records site may be found at http://cordelia.stayfree.co.uk/You can hear "Dance of the King of the World of Maya" at http://www.henrykaiser.net/multimedia/Audio%20Files/index.html(scroll down to the seventh track). Cheers Michael

Hey, very bad news from HK faves the Mermen... the below is cut and pasted from their website (mermen.net), just in case anyone can help...
Mermen's Gear Stolen in Las Vegas! HELP!!
The Mermen suffered a disasterous tragedy last night (5/26/05) in Las Vegas after their show at the Hard Rock Cafe. The UHaul trailer that they had all of their gear stored in was stolen from the oversize parking lot at The Flamingo Hotel/Casino. The lost all of their amps, Jim's guitars, Jennifer's bass, Martyn's drums, cables, Jaime's video projection equipment. They are all devastated, and need help getting their gear back.
$$$ They are willing to pay a reward for the return of their gear.
The UHaul trailer that was stolen had a Chicago travel ad on the side, and the license plate # is: Arkansas PT103498. The UHaul number is : AU34671C.
If you see this trailer or any of their equipment, please contact the band at webmaster@mermen.net
Thanks! Mermen

Hey all,
Here's HK's reply about the GRIZZLY MAN soundtrack: Yes someday with lotsa cool stuff that is not in the film
[my 2 cents: there's also an extremely cool documentary about the making of the soundtrack that MAY be released eventually according to the good Mr. Thompson; it is a not-to-be missed look at the creative process -- MAP]

Hey Forum: The final 2 CD Yo Miles! set, titled UPRIVER, is going to be released on January 25, 2005! Paste the address below into your browser to get a description and maybe pre-order it. I've been waiting for this since the Yo Miles! Fillmore shows of several years ago. What a great band. I'm looking forward to this. And Sky Garden is a monster, too (see my comments on a previous page). Thanks, Henry! http://www.abstractlogix.com/xcart/product...=20144&cat=0&page=1

Hi All; Having just discovered the music of Henry Kaiser, which is a direction I would like to follow, I came across his equipment list. The one piece of equipment that I could afford-I think- is a ada Pitchtraq, How do these compare to say a boss pitch shifter. Is an ada one of the better products in this area. Thanks Burnie

Hi... Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the arrangement of "Autumn Waltz" on the Beautiful Dreamer album (a compilation, by various artists, of the music of Stephen Foster). The mix of instruments, and how they were used, really gave the tune new life.

Just added HK's interpretation of the Ballad of Serenity (theme from Firefly) on the site... http://henrykaiser.net . Look for the Firefly button on the frontpage. HK's explanation: "Folks, After we played The Ballad of Serenity at The Fillmore on July 3, we made this simple, little, studio recording to share, just for fun. I hope my guitar solo is not too violent for any gentle listeners... I remember peanuts hoisting one speaker 20 feet into the branches of a a fully leafed out oak tree and the other under the eaves of a nearby garage one summer and late at night roasting tin foiled potatoes on charcoal while playing one of the actual/byg series and also rolling several pieces of bread together and tossing their tinfoiled asses on the coals as well. The potatoes were sliced half way through with several individual cuts and buttered down before being placed on the grill and cooked up perfectly then tortured with a bottle of ketchup before consuming. About two hours later when the feast was through and the coals were still hot the briquets they would be grabbed with the same tool used to turn the potatoes and thrown high in the air exploding into a shower of sparks upon hitting the pavement of the street. A pin joint of cannibis was occasionally passed to and fro as the greased tumors slowly cooked to perfection and the recording played it's way to completion. The old hillbilly Enoch seemed confused by the ritual although to us it seemed less strange than the gathering of white beer swizzling trash in his own backyard on the frequent summer weekend evening.
Needless to say we were considered weirdo's by the ignorant white trash who to us seemed pretty fucking strange themselves.

Just received my copy of SKY GARDEN in the mail and it hasn't left the player for several days! A triumph, a joy! This is a great record -- everyone run out and buy TWO copies, you can send the extra to a friend.
Here's a short overview of the CD that I posted at a King Crimson discussion group:
Much stokage in the house due to the arrival of the new Yo Miles! album, Sky Garden. Henry Kaiser is the moving force and bandleader behind the effort, and it was clearly a labor of love for him. When I saw the band at the Fillmore, he was the guy directing traffic, cueing the solos, etc. He's steeped himself in Miles' '70s music and you can tell the effort he put into his research by the quality of the results. With two or three guitar players in the mix, it's hard for me to tell what parts are his on the CD. It doesn't really matter, though, as all of the players shine.
This one is just dripping with the spirit of '70s Miles, including the original tunes by Wadada Leo Smith, which make up about half of the album. Listen to Shinjuku or Who's Targeted (with its nod to the Jack Johnson power-shuffle in the opening section). I think I prefer the version of Great Expectations here to the original (gasp, blasphemy). Well, OK, if it's not better than the original, it ranks right up there with the best of Big Fun.
The performances are wonderful -- the band is smokin' -- and the recording quality is beautiful (even in regular CD mode -- there is a second SACD layer, too). I was kind of disappointed by the original Yo Miles! disc, which sounded too stiff to me, but this one is fabulous. The recording quality is certainly part of it, but it also helps to have players like Steve Smith, Michael Manring, Tom Coster, John Tchichai (sp?), Zakir Hussain, Mike Kenneally, and the Rova Sax Quartet along for the ride. And Wadada is channeling Miles (without being slavish) all the way. Run right out and order a copy today. Highly recommended to the Miles lovers out there.

I can't help but contimplate the sort of horseshit the creators of Improvisational music must experience in the USA. I suppose it depends upon where a human being is located or dislocated depending upon your point of view. There is a fine line between this and that and everything else. Whenever anything comes along there is a certainty that the emulators will soon follow.
I've enjoyed the recording from SME from time to time entitled "So What Do You Think?".
Seldom does anyone ask and when they do a response is expected to be shallow and ignorant although not acknowledged as such.
I find my interests in life amount to somewhat of a double life seen by some as a darkened and sinister strangeness.
Cool!

I remember one time in particular when listening to the Bernard Herrmann score from "Psycho" I became so fucking tense and tight I decided to throw in the towel and try it some other time. Same thing occurs from time to time when experiencing improvosational stuff. There are days when my dispostion just won't allow it to happen then there are days when everything is jim dandy. I like the way it works and feel that quite often putting yourself in tune with what you are experiencing can result in a greater understanding of who the fuck knows what.
Check out this shit... The other day this guy needed to climb under a trailer in Southern Florida in order to reconnect a huge tube which was refered to as "the elephant dick" going from the air conditioner to the underside of a mobile home. It was hotter than boiling piss that day and sweat came so easily a person would find himself drenched by simply scratching his balls. Few minutes late this guy emerges from under the tin can on wheels and says "Sure does cool your shit off under there laying in front of that fucking tube."

I grabbed a copy of "Zebra" (Jack Dejohnette/Lester Bowie) and upon first play was blown by the unique original sounds. It became one of those recordings I found myself revisiting from time to time. In the summertime when the windows were open and I gave it a spin the neighbors dog (pure white American Eskimo) would jump from it's sleep and bark holy hell when Lester Bowie came in on trumpet. Funniest Goddamned thing! Another great recording of unusual and worthy sounds is "Crackle" by Michael Waisvitz. This is one of those things that may very well result in the white trash asshole next door developing a strange and curious fear/hatred of his neighbor over and going so far as to make a secret phone call to the police. And then on another day the bastards mind may be blown again by hearing Johnny Cash music emanating from the same suspect window. Lord knows it ain't fresh when a pee-brained illiterate tries to think or reason outside his own dick!

Read about Lacy dying a few days ago, too damn bad! Wild sounds! I picked up my first Lacy recording in 1977 (note BYG) for a dollar and a half. After hearing it an entire new world of music was experienced that most people have no idea exists. Those who happened to hear bits and snippets flowing through the windows back then when the turntable was turning had mixed reations. Mostly adverse as it were in an area of the USA populated by the sort of people who are too damn dumb to think beyond their dicks and twats. After that first recording I began seeking out other examples of the music experienced and eventually snatched most of the Actual series for fifty cents to 2.00 each one at a time. The most I spent was 3.00 for Monkey Pookie Boo by Sonny Sharrock. Forest And The Zoo came next then many of the ESP discs then Incus and others. Holy Christ! I found myself amongst the sort of shitheads who considered the unusual sounds so threatening to their sensibilities and thought process I had to watch my fucking back! Everyone aboard ship well!

Its been a rather crappy past few days for music. Jazz saxophonist Steve Lacy died of liver cancer Friday, June 4. HK had played with Lacy in the past, anyone know the details?
The second musician lost was guitarist Robert Quine, reportedly via his own hand. Quine is probably best known for his stints with Richard Hell and the Voidoids and Lou Reed, and selections of live Velvet Underground material he taped back in '69 were released on CD in recent years.

The blurb for Sky Garden from Wayside:
Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith: Yo Miles!-Sky Garden 2 x hybrid SACDs/CDs $21.00 Among the giants enthroned in jazzs pantheon, no one made as big, as broad, as bad-boy brazen of an impact on popular music in many manifestations jazz, rock and improvisation - as Miles Davis. At the same time, he pioneered new routes for rock. The innovations Davis made in both jazz and rock spawned immediate followers in his time, and continue to infuse and energize the music of today. But even during the revival that began in the 1990s, "… only one band has had the courage to throw itself full bore into the thorniest Davis era, the mid-'70s years when he created a dark, dangerous, haunting, ecstatically wondrous body of music that no one has ever attempted to duplicate."(San Francisco Chronicle). That band is Yo Miles! Yo Miles! was formed in 1998 to explore, expound and expand on Davis mid-70s electric music. For Sky Garden, Yo Miles!s 2nd recording and 1st release on Cuneiform, Kaiser and Smith have assembled an all-star cast culled from both the jazz and rock communities. The lineup here includes Smith on trumpet; Kaiser, Mike Keneally and Chris Muir on electric guitars; Michael Manring on bass; Steve Smith on drums; Karl Perazzo on percussion; Greg Osby (alto) and John Tchicai (tenor and soprano) on saxophones; and Tom Coster on percussion. It also features special guests Zakir Hussain on tabla, Dave Creamer on guitar, and the ROVA Sax Quartet. This set is about equally split between Miles' compositions and original compositions in the electric Miles style. The groups studio performance at The Site was recorded live, directly to a stereo DSD (Direct Stream Digital) recorder. The result is a set of two hybrid SACDs (Super Audio CDs, a new technology for enhanced audio quality) playable in either an SACD player or on a standard CD player. And it rocks! [Cuneiform]

NEW INTERNET-ONLY RELEASE I received the following from HK today: HENRY KAISER and BERT SWITZER "OUTTAKES" CD This is a rare glimpse into hearing Kaiser's mind, fingers, and heart at work on guitar and bass stretching out in several different improv modes over top of Switzer's amazing outta control drumming. Switzer was the drummer in Kaiser's band, Monster Island in 1977. If HK reads this, I was reminded of this story in another forum. It's about the time the Art Bears played at the Old Waldorf twenty-odd years ago with Henry making a guest appearance. I wonder if HK remembers? Here's my post:
Yes, indeed, Winter Songs was the album of the moment when the Art Bears came to town. It was Fred Frith, Dagmar Krause, Chris Cutler, and guest Henry Kaiser. A very "out" performance. I remember quantities of uncooked spaghetti being flung around the stage, on the instruments, etc.
My concert anecdote: I was sitting at the front, next to the stage, which was about waist-high. There were cymbals scattered on the stage in front of the drums and occasionally Cutler walked on them or shuffled them around with his feet. At one point, Cutler got a little carried away with these cymbals and a pile of them ended up (literally) in my lap. You should have seen the looks on their faces, esp. Henry K. I lifted the pile out of my lap and tipped it over so that it made a large crash on the stage. And that was my contribution to the performance. I used to like to tell people I jammed with the Art Bears.

Two questions...what's the story on the "Special K and the Cereal Killers" show floating around? I know who it is, but was it part of a festival? Did they only play for 55 minutes? What's the source of the recording?
Secondly, when can we expect to see the live Mistakes album?

Invisible Means is Kaiser/Richard Thompson/John French and Fred Frith doing traditional songs, originals and lots of things betwwen. This is their second release and, i guess, that it was labeled as New Age because it was released in the US through the New Age label Windham Hill

My son went with me to the library today. He typed Henry Kaiser into the computer, and it came up with Invisible Means. It said the copy belongs to the Albany branch, but is missing. It also said that it's New Age music. I guess that means that somebody stole it. But I never really thought of it as new age. http://alam1.aclibrary.org/search/t?SEARCH=INVISIBLE+MEANS

Hi - I know Henry Kaiser has some experience with Malagasy music and I am very keen to find a song which I heard several times in clubs whilst in Madagascar from Jan to March this year(2003). All I can remember is that it was quite a cheerful, dancey track and it had the words 'super super cool' in the chorus - is anyone able to identify this song please?!? Cheers!

THE REGION -- Renowned Jazz Trumpeter Finds Harmony and Connection in Piru Wadada Leo Smith, who teaches at CalArts, says his destiny is tied to that of Miles Davis, who lived near Malibu.
Photos
Wadada Smith (STEPHEN OSMAN/LAT) JAZZ SMITH WADADA LEO By Josef Woodard, Special to The Times
A little more than a decade ago, Ventura County could lay claim to the great Miles Davis, who spent his last few years just this side of the Ventura County line near Malibu.
But Davis isn't the only renowned jazzman to settle here -- since 1993, Piru has been home to another trumpeter who's also internationally known -- although in more esoteric circles.
Wadada Leo Smith, who turns 61 this week, lives with his wife, poet Harumi Makino Smith, in a house next door to percussionist and fellow California Institute of the Arts instructor John Bergamo. A small studio sits between them, awaiting musical activities.
Smith was delighted when informed of the Miles Davis connection. "Our destiny is hooked up," Smith said. "The artist I most dream about, other than Duke Ellington, is Miles Davis. Because I was initiated as a Sufi some years ago, I know what dreams are. That's communication."
Smith has long been interested in the spiritual paths of Islam, Sufism and the Rastafarian life, hence the adopted name Wadada, meaning "love."
And Miles Davis' music and legacy have figured into Smith's musical life in the past several years.
Smith was the central figure in a well-received CD in 1998 called "Yo Miles!" a tribute to Davis' "electric" period of the '70s. This fall, Smith's Golden Quartet released an album on the Pi label, "The Year of the Elephant," which includes a free-spirited acoustic version of a suite called "Miles Star in 3 Parts." Also on "The Year of the Elephant," Smith pays tribute to his adopted hometown with the introspective ballad "Piru."
The Golden Quartet, with drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Malachi Favors and pianist Anthony Davis is Smith's "dream ensemble," although scheduling concerts is a challenge.
Most recently, they played before an enthusiastic throng in New York's Central Park, opening for Sonic Youth. Their first recording, done in 2000, was one of an ongoing series of Smith's recordings for the Tzadic label.
Smith, a faculty member at CalArts in Valencia since being granted the Dizzy Gillespie chair in 1993, loves his new hometown.
"It's a beautiful town," Smith said. "You can walk from one end of town to the other in 30 minutes, both ways.
"The other beautiful thing is that it's semirural. Next door, there are pigs and a bull used for studding. There are lots of trees. We hear birds and bats. I was born in a small town, a little bit bigger than this, but not much. I've always enjoyed living in small towns."
His journey began in his birthplace of Leland, Miss. He was lured into music by his stepfather, Alex "Little Bill" Wallace, a guitarist-singer "in the same tradition of the Delta bluesmen," Smith said. "He was a very authentic player."
Smith landed in Chicago in the '60s, in time to get involved in the legendary Assn. for the Advancement of Creative Music, led by pianist Richard Muhal Abrams. The organization's best-known group was the Art Ensemble of Chicago, which featured bassist Favors, now in Smith's Golden Quartet. Smith also met and performed with DeJohnette in his Chicago days, after the drummer had played a show there with Miles Davis.
"In that instant," Smith recalls of his first meeting with DeJohnette, "I immediately said to myself, 'I would like to make music with this man.' "
In addition to his performing and recording work, Smith found a parallel life in academia. After studying at the Sherwood Music School in Chicago and at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, he began teaching -- first at the University of New Haven, then the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, N.Y., then Bard College and now CalArts.
Jazz and classical may be Smith's current genres, but his inspiration began with the blues, he said. "I believe that the blues is the foundation of American music," he said. "I believe that that foundation can never change, because when the foundation changes, everything else changes."
For all of Smith's unstoppable creative momentum at the moment, he's growing frustrated by what he perceives as a lack of recognition for music outside the mainstream, such as his own. He also senses a distorted perspective on the music of African American artists, including a certain Santa Ynez Valley resident whose pictures have been in the news lately.
"Look at Michael Jackson. Who has done more for American music than Michael Jackson? Not many. Before he came out, everybody was singing everybody else's songs. They worked in song factories.
"But every time I see a mention of him on the tube, he's denigrated. If I see anybody who's black and doing anything important, they're belittled. It's a very strange planet right now."
Smith's own musical work touches on the avant-garde jazz scene as well as contemporary classical circles and occasional electric jazz groups. It's very much an artistic existence in progress, based out of beautiful Piru.
And he sees his work -- and that of all artists -- as necessary.
"Artists nourish the society and give people the courage to not only keep believing," he said, "but to actually understand realities about their social system."

Hi everyone...we're finally back!
It's been a tumultuous summer and fall for the site, but things are finally beginning to settle. Due to illness, I haven't been able to keep the site updated, and BeSeen (our former discussion board host) shut down without warning. I'm just now starting to get everything sorted out...
This new discussion board is the first step toward catching up on everything...and will be only temporary until I can get a permanent one set up on our server.
Watch for updates to the site in the coming weeks!
Best, Michael
