To B&L Saunders:

I too have attempted to work remotely from the island using Verizon Wireless broadband and was very frustrated with the intermittent reception. I am near you at 44 Cow Island. I just recently received the following information from a fellow Cow Islander...

"I purchased an antenna for my wireless card… not one of those little itty bitty antennas, but a BIG antenna (about 2-3 feet long and 1 foot wide) that would attach the side of a house or on top of a house. It is then attached to my VZ Access Card… through a crack in the window. I am getting UNBELIEVEABLE internet throughput. I am getting bursts of 1.5 mbps (this equivalent to T1 line speeds, but on average I get between 500-800 kbps (comparable to DSL and cable). This is about 5 to 15 times the throughput I was getting without the antenna. The antenna and the cables cost me a total of… GET THIS… $40 + $10 + $20 = $70!" She also indicated that a repeater can be added to the antenna which should help reception greatly.

Hope that helps!
Pam

Thank you everyone for all of the suggestions on high speed internet service. I will certainly look into these options and if anyone hears of anything else, please post a note on this forum. I do have a question for the Verizon Broadband service, doesn't that require cable? And also for Verizon NOW on Cow Island, is that high speed internet or just telephone service? I did try the Verizon Wireless USB modem in September when we were up there for a few days and there was basically no signal.

B&L Saunders,
The only Verizon Broadband service available on the island is Wireless Broadband, using the wireless modem. ANTENNA IS EVERYTHING! As you, Wireless service doesn't work in most places at my camp #42 without the external antenna. I actually have two external antennae. One is hard wired for the computer, the other goes to an in-house repeater for general cell phone use in the house. We used to drop a lot of calls, but now we get a solid three bars and no dropped calls in the house. We will also be dropping our landline this Fall.

I to want to thank the moderator for the
oppurtunity to express my experiences at
HLYC. Please keep in mind that the Board
of Directors first line of defense it to
be offended. They don't have the back
bone to step up to the plate and make
wrongs right. The Clerk of the Works is
a paid individual and a Board Member.
How come he is getting away with is his
screw ups? Keep that cash coming in,
HLYC has its own "Bail Out" problems.

Ron,
Thanks for the information on the Wilson Yagi antenna. I think this is the route we are going to try. Can we take a look at your setup prior to setting our own up, so we can get an idea on how to install it correctly? Also, the message from "PCap" really caught my interest, about a fellow Cow Islander talking about a repeater...do you have this too? It seems like that person is getting great reception and that is what I need and am looking for. Let me know if you would be okay with showing us your setup and then we can go from there. I don't expect we will be up there until around Memorial Day, but I will need to set my system up almost immediately after our arrival. Again, thanks to you and everyone else for the great advice...it is greatly appreciated.

B&L S., I helped the person PCap is talking about set theirs up. I have both the repeater and the standalone PC hookup. You're more than welcome to come check it out next time your up. I'm up there pretty much full time after beginning of May. I'm confident we can get you up and running. There IS signal where you are, you just need the right stuff to capture it. Look me up at #42 whenever you're ready.

JTA you looked mighty chilly coming out of the fog between Chase and Farm yesterday morning. Lucky you had a red boat.

with all due respect, this looks like armchair quarterbacking... if you guys have all the answers, why aren't you on the board....? Stop yacking and start serving. it takes effort and commitment and its easy to find fault behind your computer screen. Lead or follow..

Harila owner - so let me understand, just because a board member volunteers to serve does that make a him exempt from review of performance. I think not.

"Harila owner - so let me understand, just because a board member volunteers to serve does that make a him exempt from review of performance. I think not."

C&G: I'm sure your question is rhetorical, but I'll play. Of course the members of the Board are not exempt from review or scrutiny. But not in the "Message Board Superior Court". If any member of the Harilla club has an issue with the performance of the board, they should follow the procedures set forth in the declaration and apply corrective action in that fashion. Blathering to each other accomplishes nothing.

There are three choices in situations where one has difficulty: Accept it, Change it, or Leave. Or in this case: Live with the decisions of the duly elected Board, Change the Board by electing new members (perhaps someone from this board if there is genuine belief of superior qualifications), or quit the club.

I hope this helps you understand...

IB, $3.10 yesterday at BJ's in Tilton. Could we see sub-$3 soon? Hope so, since all my money is evaporating thanks to the dopes in Congress.

Hope you have a GPS, compass, and depth sounder to get you through those foggy mornings!

Maybe the geese forgot something and had to go back to get it?

Is IB following the geese or are the geese following Island Bob.
