Alan I concur if I had Miller Lite I would rather dump it in the gas as an additive than drink it. ha ha ha. My Father-In-Law on the other hand... he'd kill me for wasting his beer of choice.

Miller Lite works much better than Bud Light.

A mechanic at Melvin V Marina told me that you can't overdose on additive. From what I gather, if you don't use your boat much and it sits around for a long time (a few weeks) between fill ups, it's probably a good idea to throw in a second dose. (Phil, I really was kidding ... who would waste some Bud Lite?).

Read all about it, link below. Also I might add if any of you are friends with Roger at pier 19 he needs to advertise that his fuel is indeed valvtect. I know many who are still leary of the fuel he is selling since it appears most marina's that are selling it have many sign's up stating it is valvtect and he does not.

I buy my gas at Pier 19. With the valvetek already in the gas, do we still need to put in additive. Thanks.

Just got off the phone with Dennis K Burke in Chelsea and they said that both Melvin Village and Pier 19 is getting ValvTek. At this point I guess I can buy my gas from both and not worry about it.
Alan  5750
06-29-2009 06:02 AM ET (US)
The same distributor of a product such as fuel can and does carry several different grades/quality product. Melvin Village Marina does not recommend treating their fuel with the new stabil treatment as it is ValvTek fuel which is already treated. If Roger was selling this type of fuel it would be advertised as ValveTek fuel which is the prefered fuel for boats. The jury is still out for me.
Hazelnut  5749
06-28-2009 09:46 PM ET (US)
Alan,
2 things
1. Maybe I'm crazy but if Melvin and Pier 19 buy the same gas from the same guy wouldn't you think they'd send one truck from Chelsea to fill both tanks? Just a thought I could be wrong.

2. When I filled my Whaler at Pier 19 today I noticed that they featured the same Gas Treatment for sale that all the Marinas sell with ethanol.
Alan  5748
06-27-2009 12:31 PM ET (US)
Same distributor but is it the same gas that Melvin Village sells? By that I mean is it ValveTek fuel? If it is he should have the signs that Melvin and others have advertising it is indeed ValveTeck. Still not convinced he is selling quality product.
SAS  5747

 Regarding boat gas...
I spoke to Roger today and found out he buys his gas from Dennis Burke which is the same distributor used by Melvin Village Marina according to Chuck. Both said it was rated 89 octane and both said it is delivered in smaller trucks.
Roger showed me the card from Dennis Burke which is out of the market terminal area in Chelsea, MA.

Well I saw Mrs. JTA this weekend but Mr. JTA still insists on hanging around in dreary old Connecticut.
JTA, I need to let you in on something. Once you move your residence out of Connecticut you have to officially denounce your affinity to the Yankees Organization. As a prerequisite to becoming even a part time resident of one of the "Northern" New England states you must profess your allegiance to the beloved and FIRST PLACE Boston Red Sox. The only team worthy of any allegiance.

I'm just sayin'.

Much more info is needed before I or anyone should purchase fuel from Pier 19.

Pier 19 gas is being delivered in small trucks that resemble home heating oil trucks, not the large tankers we have seen over the years. Also these trucks have no markinigs on them regarding what brand of fuel or any retailer info what so ever. As a matter of fact the delivery truck that was there Sunday looked like someone took spray cans of paint and painted the sides of the tank portion of the truck. I guess what I am trying to say is I hope the shoddy looking delivery trucks are not an indication of the quality of fuel.

Valve Tek is the only boat fuel that we should be using, no I do not work for that company. Fuel that is simply treated for ethanol as was mentioned here could simply mean a product like stabil was added. This helps but falls way short of proper protection.

So in closing if anyone can get more info on the boat fuel Roger is selling it might help us to make an informed decision. I hope my perception about the delivery trucks etc... is wrong and he is indeed selling good quality fuel as it is very convenient for many of us. look forward to more info.

All,

I just bought gas at 19 Mile Bay at $3.159 per gallon. The person at the pump informed me that it already has the necessary treatment added to adapt for the alcohol content. That alone is worth about $.15 per gallon.

If we want gas at 19 Mile Bay, we need to buy gas at 19 Mile Bay.

I went over to Pier 19 on Monday to get gas ... posted "no gas yet". I was P*****. Then I went to Trexler's ... gas sign down, two guys working, no one would pay attention. I was double p*****!! A couple of days later I stopped at Melvin Village Marina. I got my gas and they explained to me what's going on. Both places are upgrading equipment for the new gas blend (MV went through that last fall), so now I'm not so p*****. MV gas was close to $3 but that's the new additive blend that most marinas are carrying. It's still ethanol gas but has a stabilizer additive mixed in.

Hi Jane,

Your boat stayed on the mooring as of Monday morning when the winds calmed down a bit.. I saw you guys tear into the wind and waves on your way out to Chase Point Sunday afternoon. Scary for me to watch that. The wind was tremendous at that time and the waves had to be at least 4 footers. As narly as I've seen them in a long time.

Glad you all arrived at Pier 19 safe and sound. Needless to say I stayed put on the island.

It was unbelieveably windy on Sunday afternoon at the lake. There must have been - easily - 4 foot waves out in front of my place. I have a picture of the port-a-potty that blew over in the wind at 19 Mile Bay, but I'll be damned if the SysEng can figure out how to post pix up here. Water was coming in over the bow of our boat as we made our way to 19 Mile Bay. (Ron, did our little boat stay put on our mooring? Thx.) Also, Ron did you get a new email address (no longer using the verizon.net acct)?

A clarification to an earlier post I made regarding TV antenna reception... Post June 12th some of the current UHF digital stations will be converting back to VHF for some unkown reason (UHF has better propagation over terrain so it makes no sense). This will require an antenna that picks up both UHF and VHF, which unfortunately will be larger.

If you have a honey hole for salmon, this is Winni Derby weekend and my husband would love to know where that is. :)

I am wondering if anyone has a decent pontoon boat, enough to carry 10-12 people and gear for an afternoon cookout? I may be hosting my coworkers for a weekday afternoon/day some time in July or August. I am hoping that this person would act as the taxi to and from probably Harilla's and of course would be paid for the services. If anyone is interested let me know by posting here and we can take it from there. I am planning early which is not usually one of my strong points.

I guess I was holding back a bit, not knowing how complicated you wanted to get. ;-)

If you are going to use multiple computers, or you don't want to setup your computer where the antenna cable comes in, then yes, the CradlePoint is the way to go. I am using the Cradlepoint CTR500 and it works great, providing wirelss computer access anywhere in the house and out on the deck as well. Best of all, you just plug in your VZ Wireless Broadband modem right into the Cradlepoint router and it becomes a wifi hot spot.

Bill & Lorna, yes VZ operates in the 830-890 MHz range here, so the Wilson 30111 would be the proper antenna, available from a variety of sources as cowgirl states. You'll also need:
- a mount (you can look at how I did mine)
- a low-loss cable the minimum length to run to where you will plug in your computer (or wireless router)
- Wilson N female to FME female Cable connector (Wilson 971107)
- a cable end adapter/pigtail that matches your VZ Wireless Broadband phone (I'm using the VZ/Novatel USB727 and the optional antenna adapter [not their external antenna!] from Verizon for that phone)

Stop by any time.

Bill and Lorna,
Ron was very helpful to us regarding the Yagi antenna. After looking around the internet, I discovered that Amazon.com carries cell phone antennas for cheaper. The good thing about their site is the customer reviews - I find them very helpful. I know they have at least one antenna that works for both 800 and 1900 Mhz, which is what my new Verizon "Dare" phone operates on. We haven't signed up for broadband yet. We're waiting to get out to the Lake and check out our signal strength with the new phone. "Verizon Wireless" should be at the top of your screen, not "Extended Network." I'm told that even an antenna won't help if its not "Verizon Wireless."
Hope this helps!

Hi Ron @ #42,
Bill and I will be on the island around the 1st of June and I would like to take you up on the offer of letting us see your setup (Yagi antenna and repeater)and possibly helping us get hooked up.I called a distributor of Wilson antennas and he asked what frequency band Verizon is using and something about a connector. It was all foreign to me, so I told him I would ask the expert, you! Do I need to know that stuff or should I just go ahead and order the Yagi 806-939 MHz Cellular Antenna (301111) from Wilson Electronics?

Your help and expert advise is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just came through Harilla about an hour ago. WOW big changes in a couple of weeks. The road now meanders through the newly made parking areas. It seems pretty good but the road is still kind of narrow by the building. I guess it's going to be a wait and see.... meaning wait and see if there are traffic issues. Looks like we gained quite a bit of parking though.

Now that's a good question. I'd prefer to see the exit run between the front of the clubhouse and the lake because it is more level. By running an exit behind the clubhouse it seems kinda steep, but would probably work if they built in a more gradual grade.

A while back, Ron mentioned that the road , entrance and egress will be 20 feet. Unless the club plans on taking over Duck Trap Road, I don't see where the twenty feet will come from. At least as I eyeball it.
Little Bear  5670

Back to Harilla for a moment. Why can't we have an exit up behind the clubhouse (where the old dirt exit was). They could easily put this in and build a rock barrier to separate the exit from the forklift pad outside the building. This would solve all of the traffic problems within the club. Can someone answer this?

The stations are also going to boost power after the June 12th, so stations you can't get now may get received after that date. Another site that shows this is http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&...id%3d7f147ecb3a6a56
If you click the button "Current" and "Post Transition" you can see additional stations coming into the "radar" for east Cow Island locations. Again, antenna type, elevation, and ability to point it will be key. I'll probably start playing with that stuff after June.
Pete T.  5661
05-03-2009 06:02 PM ET (US)
Thanks for the info Ron. I checked that site and there may be hope of tuning in channel 13 after all. It shows as a "weak" signal but maybe I can raise my antenna and pick it up.
Ron  5660
05-03-2009 03:28 PM ET (US)
Pete, I prefer this site as it shows all "potential" stations, not just a list of high probability stations. Plus it shows direction.
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/maps/
You can also move the red marker around to see what possible reception you may have if terrain is overcome with a higher antenna mount, for example.
Pete T.  5659
05-03-2009 08:42 AM ET (US)
Ron, I'm on the east side, I checked a website called antennaweb where you can pinpoint your position on a map and it displays the available channels. It confirmed that 6 & 8 are the only ones available. That stinks. I don't know what happened to 13 (CBS) must be out of range for digital.
Ron  5658
05-02-2009 07:24 PM ET (US)
Pete, what side of the island are you on? To maximize your signal, you're probably going to need a rotating UHF Yagi type antenna. Many older antennae were optimized for VHF and the digital is all UHF now.
Pete T.  5657
05-02-2009 03:36 PM ET (US)
Has anyone tried using the new digital converter boxes on the island? With my old antenna I can only get 6 & 8 out of Maine. 13 is gone. With my converter box I still only get 6 & 8 and their news channels. Anyone have any better luck? I was hoping we'd get a better variety from the digital channels.

TO ALL HARILLA MEMBERS,

While Ambrose makes great strides daily towards getting the parking area finished, the chain at the old entrance has been lowered TEMPORARILY to allow entrance and exit to the facility without hindering thier efforts.

This creates a major conflict between car and forklift traffic patterns so please drive slow and look twice before driving past the storage building - especially when exiting. If you are exiting and see a boat leaving the storage building, PLEASE SOUND YOUR HORN to allow the forklift operator knowledge of your being there. Thank you all for your cooperation...

Well that would be great Ron. I suppose as things are under construction we could all wait til we see what the final product will look like. I still think a separate exit is warranted but I will reserve final judgment until the last truck leaves the construction site. ha ha ha.

JTA  5648
04-28-2009 12:36 PM ET (US)

Hazelnuts  5647
04-28-2009 11:58 AM ET (US)
I think LCR hit the nail on the head too, it's that tight "one car only" road that is up by the building that has me nervous. Pretty low visibility and dangerous in terms of oncoming traffic.
Little Bear  5646
04-28-2009 11:04 AM ET (US)
I think that if we could have a dedicated load/unload area so we could just keep the main pathway by the holding docks free for passage from both directions, this would be a big help. Not a cure-all for sure, but it would be a start. Otherwise I think we'll need a traffic cop inside the club.
LCR  5645
04-28-2009 10:45 AM ET (US)
Andy had mentioned to me last week that he is planning on making a load/unload zone right accross from where they launch, 15 minute parking etc.. so that should help around the dock area, but it's still going to be a nightmare in and out of Harilla, tight road and no visibility in spots of on coming cars. I like the idea of having possibly, 'EXIT ONLY' drive thru in front of the club house where the small gate is now.
Ron  5644
04-27-2009 02:46 PM ET (US)
That whole area along the docks needs to be just a little wider to allow for someone to park and unload while leaving room to pass. That area is also now a dead-end, requiring a turnaround by the club house.

HN, I think an exit in front of the clubhouse would not work due to the public dock loading area right there.
Little Bear  5643
04-27-2009 10:36 AM ET (US)
Hazelnut - you are correct. My message was not intended as a complaint against the person with the trailer. I'm sure he would have moved if anyone had asked. However, my message was designed to highlight the traffic flow problem that we seem to be facing - that's all. Sorry to Mr. Johnson for getting you upset.
Hazelnuts  5642
04-27-2009 10:31 AM ET (US)
Walt,

I'm pretty sure Little Bear was stating an issue with the flow of traffic. I do not believe he was "firing a shot" at you. There wouldn't have been a problem had we maintained a separate exit. Whether or not it was you or someone unloading their trash or loading their boat is not the issue. Hell I'm sure we're all guilty of clogging up the loading area at one time or another during the season. Again that is not the point here. The point that Little Bear and the rest of us are making is that there is only one way in and out. It's only April and we're already seeing a problem. Come fourth of July it is going to be a nightmare.
Walt & Lynda  5641

I was surprised at the negative comment about someone
unloading a trailer at Harilla.

I would have guessed that if someone has a trailer, they
are hauling across more than the usual cottage opening
things - maybe having sold their home and moving in?

I would have thought that might have called for an extra
bit of consideration for the guy with the trailer, so early
in the season.

Did anyone who had a complaint about getting in and out
actually talk to the guy with the trailer ... ?? Did you
ask him to wiggle his unloading so you could get to your
favorite spot?

The answer is loud No! I'm the guy with the trailer.

I attempted to park so there was room for others to get
by. If I didn't leave you enough room, why not ask me if
I could shift and give you more room

Not one single solitary person took the time to try to solve
"the problem", if there actually was a problem. If you were
too shy, then ask the management to mention it.

Obviously so much easier to just put out a "shotgun blast"
complaint on e-mail than to talk to someone you had a gripe
with.

I agree with the traffic flow problem at HLYC. This has potential to be a nightmare. Yesterday someone was parked in the area down near the holding docks while unloading a trailer. Nobody could get in or out past him. I was under the impression that we would be able to circle thru the club - down past the holding docks, then up by the clubhouse, but apparently not. What a fiasco.
phil  5638
04-27-2009 08:21 AM ET (US)
I couldn't agree more. The GC had the duty to contact the fire marshall at the beginning, before any construction. What were we blindsided to the tune of an additional $500,000. That's HUGE money.
Hazelnuts  5637
04-26-2009 09:46 PM ET (US)
My apologies in advance to the G.C of this project but I do believe he should have gotten everything in writing from the Fire Department way way back in the beginning so we weren't blindsided with this ridiculous Fire Suppression system. Wouldn't a good G.C. know of or take care of this stuff in the beginning?

As for the traffic pattern I predict problems this summer with that. Any hope of having an exit road in front of the clubhouse?
JTA  5636
04-26-2009 09:11 PM ET (US)
I've been wondering what'll happen when that system malfunctions and triggers the foam when there's no problem. Since we all own part of it we can commiserate together about this huge building code rip-off.
Ron  5635
04-26-2009 08:43 PM ET (US)
Those "fancy fans" are the State-Fire-Marshal-mandated fire suppression system which is supposed to be able to fill the massive building with foam in less than a minute, or something like that. Seems like significant overkill for a non-occupied building. Doesn't look like they are done with the paving yet, so there's still hope on more parking. The old entrance looks permanently closed with landscaping being put in place to keep it just a walkway in. There was only one way in/out before, so no change.
phil  5634
04-26-2009 07:11 PM ET (US)
Got my first look at the new building at Harilla Saturday. Yup we really needed all those fancy, nice looking fans just below the roof on the building. One member I ran into says we'll be paying for those for a long time.

Also I thought we were to get increased parking. Doubtful. Looks like a wash at best. The new building took away parking and the torn down racks added about the same amount.

Another observation. Is there only going to be one way in and out of the property. And is this by the construction road running along side the new building. If so it looks awfully narrow to me. What happens when one vehicle going in meets one going out. There is a chain across the old main entrance. Will this be now blocked off for good.

Your thoughts.

Whoa yeah that does not look like damage from striking an object while in the water. It looks more like something coming down on top of the prop. Weird.

No we have not had any damage to the boat over the winter. We splashed it last weekend and opened up the house. All was well with the boat.

I am currently on the island watching a lone bass boat cruise by..... It's getting warmer and I hear its only going to get better.

JTA,
Some hotshot go-getter moved between us for the summer. The nerve of this guy putting my docks in for me and lowering your dock frame. Geez if this keeps up I'll have nothing to do but relax when I'm out here. He even went ahead and cleaned up his yard all day last Sunday. I told him to blow all the leaves into your yard because you like a natural looking habitat.

Real quiet today on this side of the island. Just us and the Caruso clan. Your camp looks lonely JTA. It told me to say hello to you and not to forget about it. All looks well over there.

HN, yes. That is the repeater we have in our camp with a single 1' stick type omni antenna on the side of the house. This setup is to eliminate the dead spots in the house so we don't have to stand on one leg on our front deck rail to get a good signal. We have a steel roof which contributed to our problem. We have 3+ bars everywhere in and around the house now...no dropped calls. They're a bit tricky to setup and you need to try to get the external antenna as high a vertical separation from the base unit as possible. The directions are pretty thorough. If you have a good signal outside, then this will fix your problem.

Just one more clarification...even if you get fewer than 3 bars on your phone, it still may be possible to get a good signal with an external antenna. With three towers around the Lake, I actually can't imagine that someone on Cow couldn't get an adequate signal with an external antenna mounted in the right place. Don't get the little external antenna that VZ wants to sell you for the modem. Those are useless. The antenna I would recommend is this one:
http://www.wilsonelectronics.com////ViewProductB.php?ID=13

with appropriate low-loss cable and an adapter for your phone/modem.

Hi,

We are seven cottages west of Hole in the Wall, on Little Bear Island. I am using Verizon Broadband Internet as I type.

The way to answer the questions is to take a look at the cell phone service you have at your cottage and at your farm. If you have at lease "three bars" you are "good to go".

The Verizon broad band is expensive, but it works almost anywhere!
Which side of Hole in the Wall are you?

I am using VZ Wireless Broadband and getting 1.2-1.4 Mpbs speed (similar to DSL/cable) using a $60 external Yagi antenna. We are closer to Barber Pole side facing north and Northwoods Camp. Without the antenna I was getting 400-800 kbps with the modem's own antenna on my laptop. I have tested the signal over near the Hole-in-the-Wall on Ralph Colella's deck and got a good signal. If you can see Gunstock, you'll get even better signal. If you have a VZ phone and get at least 3 bars you'll have good Broadband. We also have a signal repeater in our camp to eliminate the dead zones inside the house (I sometimes use that with my roaming laptop as well). The repeater will only be as good as the signal you can pick up on an external antenna that it connects to, and now we no longer drop calls in the house.

Hi All,
We're looking into Verizon Broadband for high speed internet for both our rural farm in Vermont (yes, we actually have cows!) and for our cabin on Cow. We are near Hole-In-The-Wall so are facing north. Any ideas on how well a signal might work on Cow? If necessary, is there such a thing as an antenna for boosting the signal, and if so, where would we buy it?
We appreciate any advice!

Someone on the Winni forum mentioned that Moultonborough was looking to make the Harilla public ramp road resident-only parking. That would be devastating for ramp users as well as Harilla guest parking. If that happens, I hope there may be enough extra parking area in the new Harilla Yacht Club to have a guest parking area with a members having access to guest parking tags on an as-needed basis.

....or if your neighbor's water is running, run a hose from his house to the foot valve end of your intake line and fill-er-up until water comes out the pump vent. ;-)
H-Nuts handyman ;o)  5597
04-16-2009 09:59 AM ET (US)
Alan - another way to backfill that water line (quick and easy) is to get a manual bilge pump from the hardware store, the gray type that looks like an old-style bike pump, (maybe $20 - $40 depending on the size of the pump). Pull the discharge line (the flexible hose) out of the pump, and either put your water line in it - if it is the correct diameter, or... for a more secure and easier "one man job" rig... Cut the collar off the very end of the discharge line, get a nylon (not brass or galvi.) fitting that is barbed on one end and threaded on the other that fits the hose and your foot valve thread. Place the barbed end in the discharge hose, secure with a couple hose clamps, remove your foot valve, screw in the fitting (bilge pump), place pump in lake and start pumping. They move a ton of water in short-order, so you'll have that line filled in no time! Naturally, the bigger the pump, the quicker you'll fill the line. When you have water at the pump end, remove bilge pump, insert foot valve, place in lake, prime shallow well pump and let 'er rip! You should be pulling water before you can crack your first beer.

Alan, we have the same setup. It is a real pain sometimes. Ours is misbehaving as I type this actually. I am sorry to to have an answer for you, but I do have a bit of sympathy. Use a recycled milk jug instead of a coffee can and have a few full next to you just in case.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for priming the water line from the lake to the pump? I have the classic settup where there is obviously a foot valve on the lake end, a filter before the pump, then a Sears shallow well pump. I take the foot valve off and fill the waterline with a coffee can up to the filter, this takes quite some time. I then prime the pump and it usually works. Perhaps this is what everyone does, just thought I would ask in case I am missing something much easier. Thanks.

It's in Ft. Pierce (near Vero Beach) ... Spanish Lakes Country Club Village, a mobile home park with senior adult day camp and a golf course so I can continue as champion of the Cow Island Golf Tournament. The weather is calling for a windy Sunday which will probably keep us from going anyway. The big boat will be returning this year but not for a while yet so the 17'bass boat can be sketchy on a windy day. Al will go next weekend anyway but I will be in Maine to visit a friend who has just had knee surgery, again. She just can't say no to mogul skiing, never could.

Hi All,

I am in the process of adding a spring service request form, a valet request form, and a comment card to the "forms" page of my website so please check often as changes are being made almost daily.

To all members of Harilla, CMC will be on site regularly from now on so requests for launches and summerizes are welcome and are being processed currently. You do not have to wait until May 1st to get your boat launched, just call or email your request.
Thanks, Andrew

Hello everyone,

I wanted to write quickly and introduce myself; My name is Andrew Brousseau - I own Complete Marine Care LLC and we are the new management company for Harilla Landing Yacht Club. I went to Harilla this morning and saw some fishermen 100' beyond the channel markers and have heard from a lot of others that there is still 18" to 20" of ice on the lake but have also heard and seen that run off areas and shorefronts are quickly opening up so please be careful if you are heading out...There has already been one snowmobile through the ice at the public ramp just outside Harilla.

We are looking forward to this year and urge anyone with concerns or questions to call or write anytime. The new number for service at harilla is 603-253-HLYC(4592) or 603-651-9727. You can also reach us through our website; www.completemarinecare.com where soon, we will have a private members section for Harilla that will include a forum and bulletin board.

Lastly, we have an ice out contest on our website that is open to everyone and we have started our monthly specials so please be sure to sign up for the email newsletter so we can inform you about future specials or other offers.

Thanks very much, Andrew

LCR, on trails such as the one going up Mt. Shaw, ice can be a bummer if you don't have studded tracks. At this time of the year as things melt and refreeze you could encounter more of that.

We did the Mt. Shaw trip yesterday and were treated to a spectacular 100-mile view of the Presidential Range, ME, and VT. The exit from the Lake runs directly behind the Melvin Village Marina rack buildings. Go between the orange markers to avoid the ditch at the shoreline. Had a great visit with Island Bob....all is well! MPC, your circulator is working fine now.

You go up past Melvin Village and the trail exits the lake somewhere around Arey's. Then you beat your way up some small trails and get to the Moultonborough Snowmobile Club parking area. Then off to Mt. Shaw. I'm sure you have trail maps. It's going to start getting soupy pretty soon. I'll be thinking of you all next month while I'm walking the beaches down in Florida.

JTA,

House looks great... still standing. Day two on the island, the wood I brought is holding up just fine. Your pile is as of yet untouched. We'll see though ;) As for the ice fishing hole I saw it today. It told me to say hello from Cow Island.

Had a GREAT day on the sleds with Caruso and LCR and the kids. Had a nice drink with Island Bob who is holding court on the Island as usual. So nice and peaceful out here this time of year. JTA you'd love it. No loud boats and Jetskis. Only the very seldom hum of a snowmobile buzzing by.

Derby weekend was a blast where I was. I didn't do too much fishing though. Mostly snowmobiling. I was around the Meredith, Weirs, Gilford area. I was with a group off of Governors Island that were fishing. I was also witness to a group that had a Salmon on the hook and let it go of course. It looked real big through the hole. What a shame he had to let it go. Meredith Bay was PACKED!! Tons of snowmobile and truck traffic all over that area. All in all huge numbers of people. Lake conditions were good in most areas. Slush spots here and there though. We did one trip on the ice from Meredith to the West Alton area. A few slush spots on the way but we just blasted through them. I have some pics I will post.

IB,Sorry you have been ill. I am glad that you are feeling better.

Al (not the Alan that is posting)went to camp this past weekend for the derby. I stayed home - all men - didn't want to be the camp cook. He said on Sunday they passed a large group with 10+ trucks parked side by side and there were large cracks in the ice. All those trucks and all the holes in the ice for fishing, it was a dangerous situation. Oh well they must have all come off the ice safely or we would have heard. It is sure testing fate.

djg,

A few of us were up around Harilla on Sunday. We were all on Snowmobile. I can only tell you that in certain areas there is substantial enough slush to get a snowmobile stuck. With that said there were plenty of packed tracks from snowmobiles to follow. I think an ATV could make it provided it doesn't stop once it gets going. I did see a couple walking out to Little Bear Island from Harilla, they were following snowmobile tracks. It looked like they were having no problem.

Hi everyone, we're getting a 'cold snap' here in FL, down into the 40's ;-)

I'm looking for a renter for my bay at Harilla's, (with condition though). I will need for them to have a trailer to store my boat (I only use it 2-3 weeks a year, and launch it once or twice). The bay will hold up to a 23' boat, I have a 21' Four Winns. Know of anyone? Let me know and have a great winter.

djg, that only pertains to WMUR. All other channels are switching over. So the transition does affect those people. The article makes reference by stating
"If you live in the North Country and watch WMUR over the air (in your case that would mean on channels 38, 29 or 27), you will need a converter box, but one that has an "analog pass through" feature."
The analog pass through feature allows people to continue to watch WMUR on the analog feed. All other channels will be broadcast in digital thus requiring the set top converter.

I know it seemed weird to me but for some reason it is different for the northern part of NH. I checked the WMUR website and here is the link regarding the exceptions. http://www.wmur.com/digital/15654903/detail.html

djg, not sure what you mean. It's the TV stations that are switching over their broadcast formats and frequencies as mandated by a Federal sell-off of those frequencies for other uses. It's not a county decision, and the Gov't has made $18B selling those frequencies for other users ready to use them on Feb 17th (including emergency and commercial uses).
djg  5425
01-18-2009 06:18 PM ET (US)
some counties in the northern part of the state will not be switching over in February anyway. Not sure if that is including Tuftonboro but I am sure that parts if not all of Carroll County will not be switching over.
Ron  5424
01-18-2009 04:52 PM ET (US)
Someone on Little Pine Tree Island said he was getting Boston, Concord Manchester, and Portland, HDTV stations using a "deep fringe" TV antenna on a pole on top of his camp. Sounds promising for at least the parts of Cow that can get signals from the south. About 11 stations total including the four major networks. Signals will probably be even better after Feb 17th (If Obama doesn't screw it up with a delay), since many of the stations operating on lower power today will go to full power on their HD channels. This, coupled with the available VZ wireless broadband (may require external antenna/booster for some) eliminates the "need" for cable. Time Warner has also stated it's not in the cards for this year anyway.

It looks snowy at the lake. I see on the clubcam page http://www.wcyc-nh.com/wcyc-nh_023/clubcampage.html that there is still a sailboat at their dock. If I knew the owner I'd see if I could go for a sail on Christmas day. Hazelnut would have a hard time keeping up with that.

I don't know about this Crusoe guy. I think he's confused with the FICTIONAL tale of some guy in the PACIFIC not the Carribean. I was referring to Enrico's brother, Robinson Caruso:

Well, for years some imposter has been using this web site and throwing my good name under the whale by way of an improper spelling. I am here today to let you know I have dispatched that person to Davey Jones locker and you should all celebrate his demise. You can all be rest assured you are now communicating with the true Robinson Crusoe. And yes Ron, I don’t need no stinkin generator or for that matter a wood stove, harrumph! We here in the yet undiscovered island that I named Aruba are quite content with the current weather.

For more information please access this link which my good man Friday found, it contains a history and log of my earlier exploits.

IB glad to here that you are ok. In Suncook Village we are fine but 5 blocks away there are neighbors without power and we have friends coming to shower from Epsom. Been a bad year for Epsom since the tornado went through there this summer too. Weird storm, all the main roads around Concord are dry and like nothing happened. Yet go up any elevation at all and it is a whole different world.

As far as the guy who fell from the building. The last I heard, from his co-workers, was a few weeks ago he had been removed from the hospital and was recovering in a rehab type place. They stated he was doing well. " nothing that couldn't be fixed"

When are they going to start taking down the old buildings and finish the site work? I went by the other day and there is no equipment whatsoever at the site. I hope they don't wait until next spring to do this - creating another summer of total chaos with the parking.

Speaking of Harilla,

Has ANYONE received any communication from the board regarding problems with the building.

I saw with my own two eyes NO STEEL on the bottom row. We paid for a whole building and we got 2/3 of the Steel. What about the forklift issue regarding the height of the top row of boats? What about the issue regarding the clearance along the wall with the Yellow truck? What about the additional costs of the Fire system?

Why are we paying a GC??????

On a side note does anyone know anything about the condition of the man who fell off the roof of the building during construction. I pray that he is ok.

Sounds like they should abandon the rack assignment scheme and let the management team rack them in the best manner that fits at any given time. All the racks are the same so it shouldn't matter. That way they could put all pontoons on the bottom on 2x6's laying transversely on the floor (no steel needed).

Hazelnut! I'm glad to hear from you. I was in Maine this weekend, but looked at Winni through the eyes of several web cams. It looked pretty nasty. How did man camp go?
Re. the new Harilla building ... how about contacting the Board through the email address posted on the web site. My assigned space is one of those on the top end. I'll probably inquire. I think the Board has a meeting sometime in December. They should be informed of all of our concerns BEFORE that meeting.

Oh boy. Doesn't surprise me. I'm no expert, but the decision makers weren't experts either. Sounds like they didn't have a clue as to what they were doing. Geez what a mess if all of this is true. Makes one want to consider selling, but there won't be much of a market with all of these problems.
Hazelnut  5327
11-17-2008 08:21 AM ET (US)
Sorry to bring this up again but I have heard from a reliable source that there are even MORE problems with the new building at Harilla. Please oh please tell me that the following is untrue.

#1 The RED fork truck is not able to put pontoon boats on the top rack as it does not extend high enough. As it is regular v-hull boats have the Red Truck extended to max height just to put the boat in the rack. Pontoon boats on the top row need to be put in by the YELLOW fork truck, which by the way is too wide to access the racks closest to the wall.

#2 NO RACKS ON THE BOTTOM ROW. As of right now there are no racks on the bottom row. Rumor has it there is no steel for the bottom row. The plan is to recycle one of the old buildings to use for racks on the bottom row?!?!?!

2.2 Million dollars and THESE PROBLEMS!?!?!?!?!

I hope to GOD I am wrong.
Ron  5326

I agree KX35FORD. NH should have the same approach as MA Title IV where on change of ownership of real estate, the septic system must be brought up to currene code compliance. The current NH guideline has no teeth and is not enforced nor enforceable.

Re; Septic systems on the Town owned Land in the center of the Island. I believe it has already been done in the past and I am sure if I am wrong someone will point it out to me -- hopefully. I am in Favor of it in order to keep the quality of the lake from degrading any further. I also think the State should set up some sort of plan to check on all systems around the lake -Main land and Island property as there are probably old grand fathered systems on older camps that need some attention. I am sure this is a very un popular statement to make but is just my opinion.

Are you thinking of a large septic unit that would be hooked to several (many?) waterfront camps? It could be done but unlikely in my opinion. More likely would be a usage by individual camps with small lots that would install a new single-usage on the town land behind their waterfront lots where their faliled systems could not receive a new permit under current codes. It's amost impossible to design a system on a small lot such as mine (1/4 acre) where you have to have proper distances from the waterfront, buildings and a well site whether you intend to drill one or not.

Hi there all,
Bob Probst here.
39 Cow Island

The building has to be filled with foam to the ceiling (usually in 90 seconds) and to take into account all the fuel possibilities this is a normal hanger type suppression system. that is all

Holy Cow! Stopped and looked at the new Harilla building and couldn't believe the fire suppression system. There are eleven huge blowers mounted near the roof along one side. These are huge!...probably about 3 feet in diameter and 5 feet long. Looks like major overkill to me and I can't imagine the cost of these along with the maintenance headaches they'll present down the line. Seems like overkill for a non-occupied buiding to me.

I'm hoping that the new pole was installed (right next to the circuit breaker pole) to hold the new type of self-resetting breakers mentioned in the last NHEC flyer. They automatically reset three times in case it's a transient problem, before giving up in the case of a serious problem. This should preclude the need for the power company to come out for most outages on that side of the island.

Me too Jane, I was freezing too,

The power went out around 10:10am.

I called the electric power company and they said they knew it and that it should be on in about 2 hours.
I then called friends on Moultonborugh Neck Rd. to see if they had power and they did.
So I thought with the big wind maybe a limb shorted a breaker. That usually takes some hours for the crew to get the boat to the Island and find the short.
When I looked out the door at Jim's dock there was the electric power company boat.
A few days before they brought a barge in with a backhoe and a new pole.
The pole on the corner of Jim's and my lots was installed in 1964. the pole snapped between the upper elec. power cables and the lower telephone cables.
I walked out and they had 2 guys on the poles and one on the ground. They needed to top the old pole so that it wouldn't interfere with the power lines. They didn't have a chainsaw in their boat.

My chainsaw is electric 110vts.

I called Brian to see if you guys had a gas chainsaw.
and you don't.

I didn't have Penny's phone number for Isl Bob.

I had Brian call her to see if they had a gas chainsaw if we could use it and get all back on line. Brian call her she had the chainsaw and then called me back to send me on my way to pick it up.
The power saw was returned to Isl bob and Penny at 10:30am this morning.
That is all,

Udder Passion: It's a VERY good questions, one I was actually thinking myself.. I would prefer to had some carpet put on just to save hull scraches etc.. but I think if we want it done we have to hire it out, as were not allowed inside the building. We'll all have to do some reseach and see what can be done.

That is very interesting. At the Isthmus we had an outage late spring/early summer. There was a big wind, a branch fell and the force ripped the electric panel off the side of our house. They came out right away and repaired the downed lines and my husband, an electrician, connected our box back to the building(they would not do so without a licensed electrician there). No real damage but a bit of an inconvenience. They were to come back and put up a new pole and were going to let the phone company know since that line came down also. The electric company never came back to put up the new pole and the phone line lay on the ground all summer. I sure hope they took care of the entire islands problems and I will be pleasantly surprised to find it all put back up in the winter(ice permitting) or spring.

I'll defend Bob's honor since his computer's in the shop. Actually, he didn't make a service call. The power went off, and he starting calling "up the line" to see who else had lost power. Turns out the power co. was connecting wires to a new pole they'd put up a week or so ago at the head of the cove. Not only did they not seem to give anyone any notice, they didn't have a chain saw to remove the old pole. Bob's saw didn't work for the job so he made a few calls to see if anyone else had one that would work.

Hey Bob Probst,

Why didn't you tell me the reason that I had no heat or electricity, today, was because you were having service. You mentioned something about Long Island and some other stuff, but not that you were having a service call that disrupted service for 7 hours. (I actually thanked you for the info.) Next time, a neighborly heads up would be excellent - preferrably with a 24 hour notice. I work out of a home office, plus I was freezing.

I was at the Island and we went looking for Deer! Walked up the ridge behind 110 -- 115 and one of our group went down the far side -opposite he Orchard cove side - way in - and then headed South towards Wolfboro and then back on the Orchard cove side to see if he could roust any while we waited on the ridge and after a while we saw 3 pass in front of us about 100 yards away . I should have had a camera . They stopped and just stood there then bounded away without making a sound. Pretty animals. Kerk

We saw deer early in the summer but not since. Even my perennials & annuals thrived this year. We didn't go up after Labor Day until Columbus Day weekend and everything was still growing. We enjoy watching them and put out a salt lick and some cracked corn mid summer and not one deer came by. I think they had a hard winter last year. :(

Haven't seen a deer out here on the island in 4 months whereas last year we saw them every week. There is also no evidence of deer grazing here as all the low plants have taken hold throughout the area. Has anybody seen any? Maybe they're all on the Idlewild side?

May I address some of JTA's questions?
First the fire suppression system was not
a black and white issue with regards to the
building code. Plus there were alternatives.
There have been dirty politics involved with
the whole building projects at all levels.
Secondly if you ownly attend annual meetings,
you only get a carefully crafted presentation.
NOT a full dislosure. Thank you for expressing
your views JTA. Constructive dialog like this
may help us get to the bottom of these issues.

re. HLYC: Help me out ... I don't get it. I've been a member/owner of a rack at the HLYC since it went condo. In fact, my family goes back to when the original owners of Harilla's rented docks .. no racks. Then we experienced Til Coe, and finally the condo. I've generally been a supporter of the Board through the years; I think we've seen good folks who do a lot of work. This Board is no exception IMO. I don't see a group who run their own agendas. I've attended almost all of the Annual Meetings through the years and so I feel that decisions have been adequately explained. I do feel raked over the coals by that foam fire suppression system which is huge overkill considering the cost, but that's a requirement of code and not the Board's doing. Help me out here; what am I missing? Please feel free to email me rather than posting annonomously on the Forum. ald123@comcast.net

To Chillian & Grillin, Mainland Harilla owner,
phil and anyone else on this web site. The
Board @ HLYC do not feel they are subject to
the By-laws or any critisiam. The only way
the HLYC owners can stop the abuse is to do
one of two things. Hire a good lawyer and
sue or ban together as owners and make things
happen. A line in the sand must be drawn.
There are 3 projects in the Lakes Region like
our building and they cost less. We're talking
HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. My question
to all the HLYC owners, why are we letting it
happen? Mr. Moderator, please post this and
keep the channels open. Thank you.

Phil, let's not forget that Harilla has a huge amount of site work (new parking, building and foundation removal). Plus, the $400,000 fire supression system (building safety code requirement), and a steep increase in the price of steel. i think we will get a government bailout on our mortgage however.

If he can use existing conduits there could be a chance that we will be able to get connection, if not he said it would be too costly of a project. Let's hope this works. Not to add fuel to the fire, but I heard from what I consider a reliable source that a new rack system was put up 2 or 3 years ago of the same size and style on another part of the lake for $800,000. And we paid 2.2 million for the same. Makes you wonder doesn't it.

To Mainland Harilla owner; You posted:C&G: I'm sure your question is rhetorical, but I'll play. Of course the members of the Board are not exempt from review or scrutiny. But not in the "Message Board Superior Court". If any member of the Harilla club has an issue with the performance of the board, they should follow the procedures set forth in the declaration and apply corrective action in that fashion. Blathering to each other accomplishes nothing.:
