Thanks Sylvie. Dancy's, that was the name. How could I forget that? So what was the name of the one up past the angel?

The record shop near The Angel in Silver Street was Dancy's, the ones on The Green I can't recall their names, I always went to the nearest Dancy's.
I can recall my friend Russ & I getting our school mark, then sneaking out to join the queue for the latest Beatles/Stones singles, listening to the latest disc in "The Booths", getting funny looks when asking for Lonnie Donegan's latest.

Going back to Dancy's, I'm an avid record collector, and in my collection I have a couple of records in Dancy's own sleeves, printed with their name & address.
I gave all my teenage records away years ago, some of them would today be worth a fortune. Started collecting Lonnie Donegan vinyl as a hobby 6 years ago, but it expanded when I started thinking I used to have that one, I now have nearly 4000 in my collection, all of Lonnie's, and a couple of Lonnie Donegan web sites. http://www.lonniedonegandiscography.co.uk

The first record I bought, Loop De Loop by Frankie Vaughn.

Colin, the two records you mention, I have in my collection.

We've got some 78s from Wains (Mum and Dad bought those) - I must be a little bit younger than some here - my 1st record (bought when I was about 7 or 8 ) was Summer Holiday! A lot of our 45s have Dancys name on the sleeves.

Wains, I remember now, they were near the chip shop if my grey cells are working OK. It was Wains where Russ & I would order our German Beatles singles, wish I still had those!
What was the name of the one on The Green? They had a great stock of old American Blues, Sonny Boy Williamson etc.

While we are on the subject of music, my first record was Ricky Nelson's Teenage Idol, did anyone ever go to St Stephen's or St Paul's in Enfield on a Saturday night? They used to have great record nights in the church halls, always packed. We would have a brilliant evening and not a drop of alcohol in site.

Mad Dave- The record stall and shop on the green was called Dancy's. I used to work for the grocers shop just along from them called Caters...we had an open shop front and felt like part of the market...anyone remember them? I would always buy my records from Dancy's on the way home from work..then go home and get ready to dance the night away to live music at the Royal Ballroom at High Cross Tottenham.

Sylvie, I remember Caters on the green very well. I tried to get a Saturday job there but they had no vacancies and so they sent me to their shop on the parade at the Cambridge Road roundabout where I stayed for about 2 years. Previous to this I had a Saturday job at Richards (on the Green near to the Railway Tavern) who sold all sorts of cheap tat.

I seem to remember that Dancy's had a shop on Fore Street dead opposite the Town Hall just around the corner from Bridge Road where there was the infamous snooker hall.

Hi all,
Point taken over spelling! (Had just washed my hands, and could not do anything with them)! As to being "snobby" or "posh" Sorry to disapoint you, but I was born in the North Mid' and my father was a dustcart driver. Mind you at the time I went to school, children were encouraged to better themselves, unlike today when everything is dumbed down to the lowest level. As to taking a pop at you Steve, not you personally, but the general attitudes of the day. Certainly I can recall the time when Spurs players were all local chaps, and so one did feel some local pride in one's team. However to many of today's grossly overpaid players are not even British, never mind local! And what about that waste of space up in Newcastle who is unable to manage on a pay packet of £75,000 per week? There was a time when sportsmen in general set a good example, not any more!

Mad Dave

I expect you and Russ got strange looks everywhere. LOL

The first record i bought was Staccatos Theme from the TV series Johny Staccato. Flip side was Jazz at Waldos. Still got it i think.

Steve........cheating in sport is just not on old chap, but in my opinion not a good enough reason to boycott a tasty French Wine.

Colin........A policeman has lost his life in Cumbria, he was on a bridge trying to stop others from going on a unsafe bridge when it collapsed, the goverment have said all bridges in the area are to be examined, bearing in mind some are very very old. I am ok here in my part of Edmonton we have just had a very squally downpour 11.30am but eased to rain now and sun trying to break through, it appears to be very warm here as well for the time of year. Thank you for your concerns much appreciated.

Records......does anyone remember buying records from a stall on the green, the records used to be ex juke box and had a large hole in the middle, you used to have to put a plastic insert in to be able to play on your gramaphone at home. I got rid of my record/tape collection last year, after my family took what they wanted the rest went to the charity shop they included 78's 45's and 33&1/3rd, I had great fun showing 'the kids' how records and gramaphone worked, the great grandkids will have to look to a museum now. But I still have 2 reel to reel tape recorders and numerous audio tapes waiting to be 'sorted' I know some are from family parties, audio tape left running to record comments from party goers.

I had a great time last night my first time at a 'Classical Spectacular' concert, a group of us girlfriend are thinking of buying a camper van and going to glastonbury fest in 2011, we aim to grow old disgracefully lol.

Reprimand.....I think it very unfair to make fun of someone's hobby its each to his own in my opinion, also to critisise someone's upbringing, education and social standing shows a lack of humanity and verges on belittlement and bullying, not good traits to see I would say!

I wonder if anyone can help with this (sorry it's an N.18 query !) Does anyone know a John Silvester who in 1952 was living at College Gardens. He was born in about 1943 and until he was three years old lived in Bulwer Road, N.18. I used to take him out in his pram (as was usual with young girls in those days) and idolised him and knew his family very well. Because of circumstances, he moved away and he probably knows nothing of his first three years. I would love to be able to contact him and maybe supply any missing links for him.

Your postings re record shops and first purchases was very interesting. I found a whole load of 45s in one of our cupboards while back and flogged them off at a car boot sale (could kick myself now). I recall that among them were - Broken Hearted Melody by Sarah Vaughan (Misty on the flip side),
Living Doll by Cliff Richard, Que Sera, Sera and Secret Love by Doris Day (on whom I had a teenage crush - and still do) and Bad Penny Blues by Humphrey Lyttleton. I still have many LPs including the original issue of Saturday Night Fever and Michael Jackson's Off The Wall. Lots of Doris Day, Peggy Lee, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. Anyone else have any of these artists in their collections? Incidentally, I remember buying gramophone needles at Wains for an old wind-up machine I had when I was a young 'un.
