Hi John,

Is this club for just children, or children and adults? I am interested and would like more details on format, etc.

Thanks

Hello everyone.
Starting this month going forward, on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 3-5pm (and possibly going later) there will be a new chess club at the Chapel Hill Rec Center, which is on Estes Drive across from the main post office. Currently the rec center is finishing up renovations, but should be open any day now. After the beginning of the year, I’ll be looking for better hours on a weekly basis.

The best candidate appears to be Sunday afternoons.

If you are interested, please drop me a line at orangechess dot nc dot rr dot com.

ALL HELP is VERY WELCOME!!!!
SUGGESTIONS are encouraged.
more VOLUNTEERS like myself are NEEDED

Let me throw out some ideas:

Team league?
(open to ANY team, scholastic, university, high school, middle school, pick up team…SAS team)
Host UNC versus NC State, versus Duke B.

Pass the news along!!
Regards,
John Timmel

RAPA-I Chess Tournament.

There are still a few spots left in the morning mini-scholastic tournament in Raleigh on the 11th.

Also, in the afternoon there will be an "OPEN" 3SS G/30.

Hope to see you there!

Davis Drive 4 Scholastic Tournament
January 13th at Davis Drive Elementary in Cary

Details:
http://www.trianglechess.org/html/dde_iv.html

Some Highlights:
o Sort of a "class" format versus the more usual K-3, K-5, ...
o 3 round Championship (1350+) & under 1350 sections with a slower TC
o FREE entry for 1500+
o 3 FREE entries to States for Championship section & 1 for u1350 section
o Great format for lower rated kids - e.g. U250 & U400 sections! there were a lot in the Wildcat & DA tournaments that would fit these sections.
o Lots of trophies (some kids that could not get one in other formats can be competitive for one)
o Team trophies for each of the 4 round sections (Top 2 players count) -- this should be very interesting to see how it works out.

Incase you have not check the NCCA Discussion board lately... I have announced that I have plan to run for the 1st Vice President of the NCCA. I need everyone support to have make the vision... bring the east back into chess and the NCCA a success. I am continuing to improve the local organization, East Carolina Chess, every month and I look to help make chess better here in our great state. You can find out more about me on the discussion board, and I will hopefully have a full profile on the East Carolina Chess Website by the time GCO 20 comes around. By the way, dont forget that the 20th GCO has been moved up to the 30th of this month. Also the 19th GCO is on Saturday so come if you can. Have a good weekend wherever you are playing chess at.

After serving the past two years as vice president, I plan to run for president of the N.C. Chess Association at its annual business meeting in October in Greensboro.

Neal Harris, our current president, has served us well the past six years. I understand his desire to get back to his normal life.

One of my proudest accomplishments over the past two years was improving the content on our Web site. In 2004, our schedule and results were out of date – and tournaments were slow to be added. Today, I feel our state’s site is as up-to-date as any in the nation.

I organized the last two N.C. Invitational tournaments – and made a point to communicate the criteria for making the field, which had been a mystery to many people. I also was a floor TD for every round of the past two K-3, K-5 State Scholastic Championships and Southern Scholastics.

I do not foresee any drastic changes to the NCCA. Under Neal’s tenure, we have regained our financial footing. We are a healthy organization, but must remember not let our eyes get bigger than our wallets.

I believe in being an advocate for players in this state. I have intervened for TDs who were having trouble getting tournaments rated by the USCF, membership troubles at USCF and for players who were having trouble collecting prize money. I can’t say I single-handedly solved everything, but the success rate was 100 percent.

To me, the NCCA is one of the Top 15 state associations in the country. We have accomplished this by sticking to the basics: active tournaments, solid scholastic interest – reps to the Denker and Polgar – and good communication. The problems in other states usually revolve around poor financial judgment or childish political in-fighting. Hopefully, as president, we can stay above that and continue to promote a vibrant chess community in North Carolina.

Thanks
