Hi Ken, just to follow up Richard's reply, the only link I could find on the ETTA's site regarding 'Racket Coverings' was to the ITTF list, unless you found one I couldn't.

Ken - you have it pretty much right other than I don't think ETTA approve any rubbers themselves or otherwise. I think the list of approved rubbers they use on their website should match the ITTF list, ie what is legal for County, British League etc. For local leagues, there is and can be no requirement to use an approved rubber - it just needs to meet the criteria of the ETTA laws, ie red and black, thickness, no 'treated' rubbers etc.

I can see why this whole message is confusing - it is an inconsistent position depending on what levels you compete at. I understand that ETTA intend to issue a statement shortly on the whole matter to all leagues which I will share if and when received.

The rubbers saga continues to cause confusion ...... could someone please confirm if my understanding is correct (or not, as the case may be)- seems to me that in broad terms, local league TT is played under ETTA rules and rubbers which appear on the ETTA approved list (see ETTA website) are allowed. Furthermore, local leagues do NOT have the right to ban any rubber allowed/approved by the ETTA.
However, County TT, Grand Pris, British League etc. is played under ITTF rules and only rubbers with ITTF approval are allowed (see ITTF website).

Not surprising that the confusion continues as THE ETTA AND THE ITTF APPROVED RUBBERS LISTS ARE DIFFERENT !!

NO WONDER HARDBAT TOURNAMENTS ARE INCREASING IN POPULARITY - THE ONLY TT PLAYED ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD !!

Alan interesting subjected the serve i agree that in a ideal world everyone should serve perfectly, yet there are very few people including those in the premier div that do, failures include not throwing the ball high enough ,throwing the ball backwards ,serving over the table serving under the table ,cuping the hand ,serving from fingers not palm, holding ball with thumb and hiding the ball.but its not just locally this happens but nationally as well .The thing that has frustrated me this last season was the amount of players at british league and grand prix etc ,was that because the arm rule for hiding the ball has been inforced,so many players especially with the youngster they were hiding the ball with there shoulder by serving nearly side ways on to table, this must be actively encouraged by there coaches other wise there would not be so many players doing it,that serve really is not visable on contacted to a left hander like me because of where a right hander stands to serve and just as effective for the left hander server against the right hander receiver ,the problem is, if proper serves are not being inforced at the higher level what hope is there for the lower level, like local leagues.in saying that it is not a easy thing to do a perfect serve without failing on one of the above,i know i am not a 100% perfect with all my serves .but the way i look at it when i am playing players who fail serve, in some way or other is, are they doing it to gain a advantage?, or is it becuase its difficult to do a perfect serve everytime? i think very few people in local league do it to deliberately to gain a advantage over there opponent its only as you get higher up coaches look at every way to get that small gain .the way i look at it when at a grand prix etc is ,if you can not beat them join them, other wise you are not playing on a level playing field.i have tried the right way and speaking to the officals at grand prixs etc but they are not interested.

It is with great sadness that i have to advise that my good friend STEPHEN HENDER passed away this week after a short battle with lung cancer. Steve played with me at Thurleston and also for Britannia when Keith Armes kindly found a place in his team for two juniors.his funeral will take place at 3-30pm on Tuesday 23rd June at Ipswich Cemetery. a great guy who will be sadly missed by all those who know him.

I'd just like to thank wobbly warner for organising the britannia hardbat tourny at the weekend - an excellent (if somewhat knackering!) days pingpong. Also, well done to Freddy Dove for becoming the first player to win it twice
