One summer, my husband and I drove across country from Berkeley to Princeton in a little over 50 hours. The entire drive was within the speed limit and one the non-driver was always trying to sleep. I had to administer a final and submit my grades on a Wednesday and then get across country by a Saturday for a summer research internship.
What I remember about Iowa is a delightful rest-stop where we slept for three hours in a blanket of fog and surrounded by cornstalks. Unfortunately, I passed through the state during the night and, as such, saw little.
My return trip form NJ to CA was much slower. To our surprise, we stumbled into the bike rally at Sturgis in South Dakota. I love a good road trip!

As far a public teams I can't say that I'm a dedicated fan, but I do like the Rams. I think the interesting story about Curt Warner is that he played at the University of Northern Iowa and for the arena football team from Des Moines, The Barnstormers, before making it pro.

Now, I have to say that even though I grew up only a couple hundred miles from Iowa (Kansas City), I've never been there. I guess that's pretty bad, huh. All I know is that everyone says Iowa is flatter than Kansas, which I really find hard to believe (and according to you, completely untrue).
As for sports, I'm sure Mizzou and Iowa are quite familiar with each other. What about public teams? Do you like the Rams (though they are really bad right now--what's up with that?) or Chiefs (they are really bad too, but this year they can at least say they beat the Rams)?

Thanks for all the messages. Sorry I haven't responded earlier, but let's just say the webpage design has occupied a LOT of my time. Martha, you are correct we grow a lot of maze which is currently being harvested (I mentioned the slow moving tractors on the roads!) Most people think it is flat, but we have our hills too. There is a well known bike ride across Iowa, RAGBRAI, that soon teaches people that it's not all flat. I've included a link on my homepage to the RAGBRAI site for fun, thanks for the suggestion Todd.

I was going to mention the college football teams, but I see you included that in your initial message. Any other bits of knowledge about Iowa that you can sprinkle in our class would be great (how about a link on your web site to a great Iowa web site?).

Iowa is a flat state that grows a lot of maze. Since I've never visited the state, yet, my knowledge comes from co-workers and friends.

Unfortunately, I must say that I dont' know much about Iowa. Let's see. It borders the Mississippi, right? I guess my lack of knowledge about American geography is showing.

Because I haven't had any classmates from Iowa in any of my CSUH classes and because Dennis O'Connor mentioned in his biography that he teaches online for the University of Northern Iowa, I thought it might be fun to hear what bits of knowledge you have about Iowa.
You may know we are a very agricultural state, that means this time of the year traffic moves slower on smaller county highways because of "tractor traffic." I enjoy the changing seasons, and fall is always fun for our children. They enjoy taking the hayrack ride to pick out their own pumpkins. I believe it is a wonderful place to raise our family.
We enjoy our collegiate sports, and right now the University of Iowa Hawkeyes are doing pretty well in football and Iowa State University too.
