I think that perhaps longer posts should be linked to, but I still found it kinda interesting. I didn't even realize it was Xeni until I got into the discuss/gripe section. Just remember thinking, "odd, that Cory would write so much about an international film. Oh well."

my opinion is that the second you put up a discuss link to a post you have to accept the fact that criticism will come in. it's part of the medium, if you ask me.

that said, this entry stunk of "ad" the entire time i was skimming and eventually skipping it. personal preference, of course. its not my blog. but you do write them to be read, to some extent anyways.

i have been reading boing boing for two years and i think xeni is a fine addition. she was an excellent guest blogger and i was happy to see her made a permanent author. i know where to go if i want to read about iraq. it was a welcome treat, however, to see a review of a movie i've wanted to see for months.

"I couldn't care less if BoingBoing saw fit to run my post reminding people in Toronto to protest the unjust war that the West is waging against millions of innocents and instead runs long-winded posts about obscure films by obscure directors that nobody will remember long after the US murders millions of Iraqis..."

Boy, I'll bet you're a hit at parties.

Agreed. Yay Xeni!

Although her posts usually differ in tone, content, and style from the rest of boingboing, I don't think of that as a bad thing. Broadening horizons are a good thing.

Xeni's content rocks, I'd rather have her posts be long than not here at all, even though I tease, I tease.

Xeni = more-better boingboing

I've enjoyed Xeni's content, but I wish she'd respect the boingboing style.

"obscure films by obscure directors that nobody will remember"

Tim, your incredible rudeness is exceeded only by your ignorance. I happened to receive a filmmaking award the night Mr. Almodovar's film played at the New York Film Festival, and not only is TALK TO HER a brilliant work of art, and not only is he a brilliant filmmaker, but he is also an extremely generous and tactful person. Long after your tantrums are thankfully forgotten, his film will be remembered. You could learn more than a few lessons from him, kid.

Cory: your site rocks i love it i'm a longtime fan keep up the great work!!

Ernie, that's not really the point of the film. (In part) Its more about unspoken relationships between men and women on a spiritual level. See it, it's quite fun.

It's a refreshing adult melodrama, the kind they don't make anymore.

Gotta have the last word, huh, Tim? If you couldn't care less, why'd you bother to bring it up in the first place?

"Besides my post made it to MetaFilter and linkfilter, which have larger readerships anyway."

Then why were you bitching about it not being posted on Boing Boing? Should all web sites everywhere be devoted to posting only what you consider important? Maybe that's _why_ it didn't get posted on Boing Boing, because it was already adequately covered elsewhere. Personally, I read Boing Boing for the stuff that _isn't_ posted to a bunch of other places already.

Ya know, Cory may be kinda touchy when someone maligns his friends, but when you say "Boingboing is above criticism", it's obvious that you didn't notice that there were a bunch of other criticisms of this post that didn't seem to excite such a response from Cory (or anyone else). If you look at them, you'll see that while the posters criticize, they don't categorically dismiss Xeni's post, and they don't whine about how their overlooked posts are so much better and more worthwhile and morally significant.

I should probably shut up now (or maybe I should have an hour ago).

I'm having my doubts about this film. As if the perfect woman is a woman in a coma, a woman you 'can take care of' and it's for her own good.

Really, Cory, this is getting embarassing now. I couldn't care less if BoingBoing saw fit to run my post reminding people in Toronto to protest the unjust war that the West is waging against millions of innocents and instead runs long-winded posts about obscure films by obscure directors that nobody will remember long after the US murders millions of Iraqis, simply because a buddy-buddy in the MetaFilter clique submitted the post instead of some obscure justice-serving schmoe (wow, run-on sentence! Is that worse than saying "sit" instead of "site"?). I was simply pointing out the silliness of it.

Besides my post made it to MetaFilter and linkfilter, which have larger readerships anyway.

Ooh, I bet that last one hurt, eh? Can we call it quits now?

I'd rather be a touchy jerk than an insenitive, sanctimonious goon who takes it on himself to describe other people's efforts as "useless" because they don't suit his taste, and beef sour grapes because his suggestion didn't make the cut on someone else's sit and use that to suggest that the thousands will die.

Boingboing is above criticism, I see. I run a few sites of my own (no blogs, because I generally have nothing useful to say, nor am I such an egomaniac that I think that I do) so I'm well acquainted with the "taking crap for offering a free service", but I don't swear at people when they do it.

Nice to see that boingboing is made of decent human beings. My estimation of Cory just dropped a few hundred points.

Hey, Cory, I was going to suggest taking a deep breath, but it looks like you just did.

I have to say, when I was reading Xeni's post, I didn't notice how long it was, though I do remember thinking "this sounds interesting, though it doesn't sound like the sort of movie I'd typically watch." If I hadn't wanted to read it, I would have scrolled down to the next item.

Hey, Tim, if the protest reminder is so important, where's _your_ blog about it? Because you read some of the stuff on Boing Boing, they owe you something? Your attention is that valuable?

The film's actually quite good, I saw it about two weeks ago. It's not as well paced as All About My Mother, but quite touching in it's own right, worth a look.

Yeah, too long, and incredibly useless. Meanwhile, my reminder to the Toronto crew of the anti-war protest in TO that went on this Saturday didn't even get cleared. Way-too-long posts about obscure movies are more important than working to prevent millions of needless deaths? Come on.

That is one big ass post.

The only Almodover film I've ever seen is Tie me Up, Tie me Down, which wasn't too bad. He does have a rather distinctive shooting style.

Almodovar veers off into outrageously surreal comic
detours--including a silent film within a film in which a
palm-sized shrunken man leaps headfirst into his lover's vagina,
where he lives happily ever after.

Almodovar constantly puts these odd sexual interests in his
films. I haven't seen a lot of other modern Spanish (from
Spain) films. Is this just him, or typical of Spanish film in
general?

I remember going to Pepe, Lucy, Baum (sp?) with an old friend
and a guy I knew who wanted to get to know her. She had
suggested it, but about halfway through the film wanted to
leave the theatre. We made her stay.

Favorite Pedro scene: Women on the Verge. Carmen Maura torches the bed of her ex and then casually flicks her ciggy onto it.
