Chuck and Anne: yes, your dogs were just saying hi, and I should not have yelled at them. My apologies, I was upset after going past Matthew's house. His dogs were barking aggressively and menacingly, and I was actively studying his fence to make sure they could not get over or under it. I yell at menacing dogs to show a dominance position to get them to back down. It has saved my flesh in the past.

Dogs bark when people walk by. They are not menacing. They are behind a fence and are basically just saying hey. We live on a loop so people are free to go the other way.

 Tonight!
Gypsy Moon is Playing the Merc!
Gipsy Moon is a five-piece group of wandering artists on an endless journey toward good times and raw expression. With music as their carriage, strings as their weapon and the horizon as their aim, this unconventional band is not one to be missed. Their sound, often referred to as Gipsygrass, is something like a backwoods hoedown meets the smoking basement of a New York jazz club. Their soothing harmonies, raging solos and dirt encrusted bass lines bring an old time style into an exciting new dimension; one that hippies and poets, lovers and dancers, freaks and families alike can all come together and move in ways that their bodies have never known. The members, made up of Silas Herman (guitar/mandolin), David Matters (banjo/vocals/guitar) Mackenzie Page (guitar/vocals/tenor guitar/washboard), Andrew Conley (Cello) and Collin Huff (bass/vocals/guitar) all take rest in the windy mountains of Nederland, Colorado. When they are not on the move you can find them here, forming cantos high up in the Rockies, making herbal concoctions out of the local flora or sharing a glistening jug of homebrew around a blazing campfire. This is but a small glimpse into the source of their musical inspiration. The content of most of their lyrics is a tasteful blend of nature based love songs, anti-establishment sing-alongs and down home simplicity with a gentle kiss of civil disobedience. They create music that is meant to plant inspiration in the soul and start a fire in the heart. They perform with the intention to build community and to invoke love in its wildest manifestation. They travel in order to experience life to its fullest and to build bridges that connect the frayed ends of the crumbling establishment to a new and beautiful way of existence. If one should ever come upon an opportunity to see Gipsy Moon, whether on the stage, in the woods or even sleeping in your back yard, they should be pleased at prospect of kicking off their shoes, smiling to the heavens and getting down and dirty to some rowdy ass picking.

flat landers seem to be settling in for their summer vacation in the mountains. a gray/blue haired woman was walking through sky ranch this morning yelling "SHUT UP!" to all the dogs she passed in the neighborhood while the little man she was with was provoking the dogs by growling at them and saying "IM A BEAR!" these werent some foolish teenagers, these were senior citizens. i assume there is some mental illness at play. Hello Peak to Peak Mountain Transit Project Supporters,
Thank you all for your support. I wanted to give you an update on where we are with our mountain transit proposal, that is, a public transportation option from Allenspark to Black Hawk via the Peak to Peak Hwy. Collaboration and support is imperative for the success of this public transit route along the Peak to Peak Hwy. We are currently working very closely with Via and both the Gilpin and Boulder County Commissioners to submit a Colorado Dept. of Transportation rural transit grant. The good news is this grant deadline has been pushed to mid-July which will give us a chance to write an accurate proposal for the most used (and likely funded) route.
How you can HELP: Once we have the grant application in our hands, we will ask you (individuals) and local organizations/business for a letter of support to CDOT. A similar letter to the Boulder County Commissioners will also be very helpful as we would like to approach them for funding. Please start to think about these questions for your letters of support. 1.) Describe your organization/and location on the Peak to Peak. 2.) What is your relationship to Via Mobility Services (used to be Special Transit)? Who do you think this route will serve? (Remember to identify user groups such as older adults, people with disabilities, students-before and after school enrichment, recreation, health services etc.) Describe specific routes/locations the route would be used for (ex. Mountain family health, connect to Ned RTD etc). 3.) How will you as an individual/organization support Via in the Peak to Peak Transit Project? This may be in promotion and ridership referrals. Please stress the number of riders the organization anticipates as ridership, time of day, and days of the week needed. What fare do you feel is reasonable?
The letters to the Boulder County Commissioners can be written as soon as possible and sent to commissioners@bouldercounty.org.
Thank you for your support and we will let you know how our progress goes…

I broke a very cool wind chime, and need to have the little fairy with heavy wings welded back onto the little post she was sitting on. I can't do it!! I think the metal it is made of rejects my solder, and although it is reattached, I can see the weight of the little fairy is causing it to break off again. Does anyone know someone I can take it to? My daughter gave it to me for Mother's Day about 6-7 years ago, and it means a lot to me. My email address is deehuntley102@gmail.com, or call my cell phone 720-838-4439 if you think you can help me with this. The copper color is only paint, in the picture.

Hey Neighbors! I am wondering if there is any interest in participating in a Cooking Class taught by me? It may take place in the early Fall at a beautiful facility in the Jamestown area. Possible menu would include healthy BBQ, vegetarian alternatives, gluten-free options, and other deliciousness. Space would allow for everyone to slice, dice, and cook. Food and recipes would be taken home. I'm just wondering what the interested level may be. If you'd like more details, please email at lulushighcountrykitchen at gmail dot com. Thanks! I have received the information about the Way to Go van pool program. It seems that before something like this can work it would first be advisable to find out if people are interested in car/van pooling at all. Sharing rides and consolidating trips up and down the canyon seems like a great idea less wear-and-tear on your car, less wear-and-tear on the environment, less wear-and-tear on you! and less money spent on gas. I think a logical place to start would be to set up a car pooling/ ride sharing QT. People interested can post the times and location of their commute and others who commute, or need rides at the same time and near the same location could connect. Then I think if there turns out to be a group of people going to the same place at the same time a van may then be feasible. Thanks for the feedback so far please continue. Here is the basic information. If you would like more details please contact martine@amadeart.com There are customized vans ranging from 7 passenger caravans to 15 passenger Ford vans, and anything in between. The vans provide relaxing, enjoyable, and safe environment for commuting to work. The service is easy, flexible, and reliable and the Way to Go program (run by DRCOG: the Denver Regional Council of Governments) is setup on a volunteer basis which means, a group gets together, decides their route, decides their starting point and ending point, time schedule, and the size of the van, which is used to commute to and from work. There needs to be a primary coordinator that is basically in charge of the vanpool. The group can have as many alternate drivers as they want, and can also have just riders. All drivers must be approved through a DRCOG application process before they can drive. A Way to Go vanpool must have two potential drivers available, a primary and a secondary driver. Depending on which you are, the requirements are different.

for the land line, mine does seem to mess up this time of year, I think it's my house being so old and water drains through one of my windows but keeping a towel in the window sill takes care of that, two three weeks ago I rewired my phone line from the main component and had no problem since, but does make sense there are phone issues when the snow is melting

Hi Karen, we had horrible static last night making the service unusable. I placed an online service ticket with them, and today the service seems to be fine (I don't think they did anything, I consider it dumb luck). I'll be home until 2ish today, so you can swing by up here if you need a phone.

Seems to me the demand for the Climb is not there...if it were, it would succeed regardless. I had 5 free passes I could not give away. I loved the shuttle bus concept and even donated money to the Climb but how do you ride the Climb to Boulder, drop off your kid at school, get yourself to and from your work location, then pick up some groceries and your kid again, and then get back to the bus stop in Boulder all within the scheduling constraint of the Climb? Add to the fact that if you don't live close to the parking lot in Jimtown you need to drive there anyway. Some agile people can jump on another bus or bicycle once in Boulder and make their way but if you have to move around in town (who doesn't?) how is that accomplished efficiently? If the concept were more of a park-and-ride and you leave your car IN BOULDER that could work...until you need your car to go UP the mountain...then what? Sorry, living in the mountains almost (at least for us) requires multiple cars for multiple people and their different schedules. Having a bus provide only one leg of the trip doesn't make the trip any more convenient for most. My 2c

Martine about THE CLIMB
05-09-2013
10:21 PM MT(US)
|
At the Board meeting on Monday we found out that the bottom line about THE CLIMB is that the funding for it ends June 30th. And at this point, there was not enough ridership for it to continue. There is a way to save THE CLIMB and that is to have at least 5 riders per trip from now until the end of June. It leaves the JT Post Office at 6:45am and you can catch it at the Homeless Shelter (Broadway and Lee hill) at 5:50pm. The ride to/from Boulder takes about 30 minutes. At the meeting I expressed my frustration with the lack of communication, clarity and promotion of The Climb. This I feel was mainly due to the point person on their end (who is gone now but a little too late). I think the route information, times, website etc. were confusing and inaccurate and I think this effected the number of possible riders. Any efforts to correct some of these issues were thwarted by a lack of communication. (We did not ride THE CLIMB for a long time because according to their route map it would take too long. By accident we found it did not take as long as it stated and it worked out beautifully.) So… unless more people are riding from now until June 30 THE CLIMB is no more for Jamestown and the possibility of it returning will not be revisited for many years. Other people had good ideas and feedback and one idea was to look into a van pool option that is supported by Boulder County. This is not public transportation it is more of a carpool situation using the counties van. It is organized, driven (literally), and funded (with county subsidies) by the community. It would need at least 5 committed people and drivers. I can only see this working if there is a group of people regularly going to the same (or close) to the same place at the same time on a regular basis (school, work, the Boulder Farmers Market, etc.). I am in the process of getting more information, as I do I will post it. Any thoughts welcome! martine@amadeart.com Edited 05-09-2013 10:24 PM

Save Our Bears

Bears are out and about! Two years ago we had a really bad time with the bears, so here are a few suggestions so that history does not repeat itself. Division of Wildlife will no longer relocate nuisance bears except in very rare circumstances, so if they receive reports of nuisance bears, they trap the bears and destroy them.
It is our responsibility not to create nuisance bears!
Take down bird feeders! Even if bird feeders are hung out of reach, bears feed on the droppings of seeds and other bird food. The bear then knows that food is available in this location and will return over and over to check for food. If the bear finds no food from the feeder, he will keep looking- and this means he will break in to a car, garage, or home.
Clean out cars! This includes vacuuming food crumbs and removing things like sunblock and lip balm that smell like food. A suggestion is to have a small tupperware in which you keep these items, take it inside at night, and put it back in the car in the morning.
Laura posted awesome ideas about freezing food trash until pick up day.
Here are links to purchase bear-proof trash cans:
http://www.worldsafetyproduct.com/product....=16862&cat=0&page=1 and here http://www.worldsafetyproduct.com/product....=16359&cat=0&page=1
If you have trash/dog food/etc. stored in garages or outbuildings, you can make "unwelcome mats" to prevent bears from deter bears from breaking in: Here is how to create one:
http://wildlife.state.co.us/SiteCollection...e/UnwelcomeMats.pdf
Talk to neighbors and friends if you see things on their property that might encourage the bears. If you feel uncomfortable doing this, shoot me (Lisa) an email mountainvetATgmailDOTcom so that I can drop off BearAware literature and/or send volunteers from BearAware to help people bear-proof their property. It is important to start the conversation every spring!
I have Save Our Bears stickers available for anyone who wants one. These help raise awareness and support our commUNITY. If you can donate a buck or two for a sticker, this will help keep stickers available.
Thanks for reading!

Dinner to be served with LEFT COAST COUNTRY:
This is serious stuff... read carefully...
We have been serving the best fresh, 100% all natural beef burger that we have been able to find and procure and we love it, BUT there is a new one on the market and it is also very local.
We want to know if the new one could measure up to the burger we already know and love, so hence here comes
BURGER OFF!!!
Dinner will be a burger, 1/2 one type, 1/2 the other type- along with fries, salad, ext.
You vote and the winner at tomorrow's dinner will be the Official Merc burger. Incumbent or reigning champion? You decide!
p.s. there are still veggie options. AND most importantly, you will LOVE Left Coast Country.

Last summer, by a mixture of a broken down car, Bearfoot Kenny and divine providence, we were lucky to have these guys come play for us. Now they're coming back in a working car on tour... Don't miss 'em, from Oregon, they are GREAT.
Left Coast Country is a northwest bluegrass and country band based in Portland, who deliver both high-energy original compositions and an authentic take on traditional sounds stemming from Bill Monroe to Towns van Zandt. The live Left Coast Country experience encompasses a varied display of hard driving melodies coupled with five part harmonizing vocals that appeals to a wide ranging audience.

Boulder County Forest Health Outreach eNewsletter May 7, 2013 Todays forest health outreach update covers the following topics: *Forestry Tip of the Day: View an Aerial Photo of Your Homes Defensible Space Zones *Join us Saturday in Nederland: Free Firewise Landscaping Forestry Workshop May 11 *Magnolia Road Community Training: Free Wildfire Mitigation Community Training May 21
*Forestry Tip of the Day: View an Aerial Photo of Your Homes Defensible Zones 1 and 2 Forestry Tip of the Day: As part of the 2013 Boulder County property appraisal Notice of Value postcard mailed on May 1, mountain residents, who reside in unincorporated Boulder County, can view an aerial photo of their defensible space for use in wildfire mitigation work.
The second page of the online Notice of Value PDF includes an aerial photo of each unincorporated mountain property and two concentric circles depicting estimated wildfire mitigation defensible space Zones 1 and 2 (a sample defensible space PDF is available here: http://www.bouldercounty.org/doc/landuse/sampledspacephoto.pdf). Creating and maintaining effective defensible space on your land gives your home a fighting chance against an approaching wildfire. It also gives firefighters an opportunity to do their jobs more safely.
To access the online Notice of Value and "Your Wildfire Defensible Space" PDF, go to www.bit.ly/boconov. Enter your Account Number and PIN from your postcard that you should have recently received in the mail, and click on E-NOV Image, which will display your Notice of Value statement (page 1) and "Your Wildfire Defensible Space" (page 2) in PDF format. Dont have your Notice of Value postcard? Email us at wildfiremitigation@bouldercounty.org or call 303-441-3930 for assistance.
Why is this important? The Boulder County Land Use Department is providing this photo as an educational tool to help residents prepare for future wildfires. The Fourmile Canyon Fire and other recent Colorado fires continually teach us that wildfire disasters cannot be prevented without homeowners actively creating and maintaining effective defensible space and safe home ignition zones. With this information, the county is hoping to encourage all residents to take additional action to improve the chances that their homes will survive future wildfires. To learn more about wildfire mitigation visit us online at www.BoulderCounty.org/WildfireMitigation.
*Join us Saturday in Nederland: Free Firewise Landscaping Workshop May 11 We hope everyone is able to attend our half-day forestry workshop this Saturday in Nederland. This is one of our big workshops for the year and we hope to see lots of folks turn out! Our presentation focuses on new topics that we havent emphasized at prior trainings. We have a really good program put together and I hope to see many of you on Saturday! Please help us spread the word about this training by forwarding this eNewsletter to friends and neighbors.
What: Half-day workshop focused on Firewise Landscaping When: Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Where: Nederland Community Center, 750 Highway 72 North Event Flyer weblink: http://www.bouldercounty.org/doc/landuse/f...hop20130511.pdf(912 KB)
Defensible space does not mean moonscape: Learn how to transform your homes perimeter into an area that you can not only use, but looks good and helps protect your home from wildfires. We hope you can join us!
Workshop Highlights: Lessons learned from High Park and Waldo Canyon fires. Our understanding of how homes are lost in wildfires is changing. Learn the newest science available. Learn about simple spring maintenance tips to better prepare your home for wildfires. See fun and attractive examples of patio design and pathways incorporating d-space. Hear from a local resident about her experiences rebuilding after the Fourmile Canyon Fire. Learn how to use fire-resistant native and adapted plants to add color and beauty and to attract birds to your land. Hear from the U.S. Forest Service about planned projects near Nederland and surrounding areas.
There is no charge for this training, and no RSVP is required. Light snacks and coffee will be provided. Sponsored by Boulder County, Colorado State Forest Service, Colorado State University Extensions, U.S. Forest Service, Town of Nederland, and Nederland Fire Protection District.
*Magnolia Road Community Training: Free Wildfire Mitigation Program When: Tuesday, May 21 - 6 to 8 p.m. Where: At a community members home at 390 Porter Ranch Rd., Nederland What: Outside Wildfire Mitigation Workshop and info about a Community Chipping Event Who should attend? The program is open to everyone. However, residents living in the Magnolia Road area are especially encouraged to attend.
Program Description: At this free outdoor Wildfire Mitigation Workshop, learn how to identify mitigation actions you can take to reduce the ignitability of your home. We will tour the outside of our workshop home and critically evaluate the homes strengths and weakness in relation to wildland fire.
The Home Ignition Zone is a phrase coined by nationally recognized researcher Dr. Jack Cohen, USFS, Missoula Fire Science Lab. Cohens research focuses on how and why homes burn during wildfires and strongly suggests landowners who take precautionary action can dramatically increase the likelihood of their homes surviving the next fire.
Learn about simple actions you can take to dramatically improve the chances of your home surviving the next wildfire. Our understanding about how homes are lost in wildfires is changing. Learn the latest science available and lessons learned from last summers Waldo Canyon Wildfire.
Community Chipping Program: Boulder County recently awarded PUMA (Preserve Unique Magnolia Road Area) a community chipping reimbursement grant to help the community set up a curbside chipping program. This year PUMA will host two curbside chipping events in mid- May and in mid-Oct. Please join us at this meeting if you are interested in taking advantage of the heavily discounted chipping program. If you have questions about the chipping event please call Robert Fray, PUMA Volunteer Chipping Coordinator, at 303-939-9044. Program Highlights: Hear about our planned Community Chipping Days. Sign-up for the discounted curbside chipping program. Learn about simple spring maintenance tips to better prepare your home for wildfires. Understand the latest wildfire mitigation science. Learn how to retrofit your home to be more fire-resistant. Program Sponsors: PUMA (Preserve Unique Magnolia Area) and Boulder County

Speaking of wet and sloppy conditions, we will see moisture pretty much every day of this week, best chances for more snow are Wednesday into Thursday, and Friday night into Saturday. Both of these snow events should remain under a foot, but we could see 1.5"+ of moisture by Saturday. This will keep soil moisture up, fire danger down, chorus frogs happy (there were really loud yesterday at that seasonal pond north of Rock Lake), and make digging operations for septic tanks a messy affair...

I wanted to take a moment to give a HUGE thank you to all of you who have been so patient with us--especially over the last month or so. Several of you have been feeling the results of a volatile spring on the operation of sensitive Internet-related equipment. Some of this has been on people's private networks within their houses and some of this is part of a larger system issue. Wet snow causing blocked transmission, power interruptions on both solar and Excel grids (which "surges" equipment), equipment failure (due in large part to the aforementioned)...a variety of factors has been at play. Add to the issue that what affects one subscriber, does not affect another--or that two people may be experiencing two very different problems...and it's very frustrating on all ends, for sure. The private notes of encouragement that many of you have passed on as we wade through this hair-pulling series of events is worth gold and I can tell you firsthand that Scott is working like a madman to get everything back to stable. Please know that these things have not gone unnoticed and that we are hopeful that things will be better soon. One bit of good news is that we have a new piece of equipment which will hopefully help even things out. It is scheduled to go in during the wee hours of tomorrow morning. We have other plans which we will be implementing soon, as well. In the meantime, thank you for your continued patience!!

We've had to reboot Full Signal several times a day for months now just to be online & get mail--Full Signal keeps telling us that everything's fine on their end --that it must be our connections....just try rebooting....
Well because we are both extremely "techno-challenged" we've been feeling frustrated, incompetent and sort of stranded :) It's actually a relief to know that others are experiencing the same trouble because that will take us closer to a solution for all of Full Signal's customers!

Boulder dropped to 17F for a new record for May (by 3F), while my low of 4F crashed the monthly record by 8F since 1991. Meanwhile, yesterday's snowfall/moisture totals of 11.3/1.20" were daily records for May 1st, but well below the monthly records. In addition, 1 April to 1 May snowfall of 86.0" is second only to 87.6" that fell in 1995. Similarly, 1 February to 1 May snowfall of 150.3" is 2nd only to 154.1" in 1995 as well (191.8" for the season so far this year is 8th out of 23). Since February 1st, the liquid content of all this snow was 'only' 10.34", ranked 5th out of 23, well below the 13.15" that fell in 2003, but nicely above 'normal'. BTW, the total amount of rain since February 1st was less than 0.10", attesting to a cold spring so far (not just last night). Oh, and yesterday's high of 27F from 1am to 1am MDT was the coldest high temperature on record for May as well, but "only" by 2F. I do not see any big storms on the horizon, but would be surprised if we were done for the season (we had one year where May 1st was the last snow day of the year, but that was the earliest since 1991). The BEARS are about! Let's work together in having ZERO bear incidents this season! Remember to clean your vehicles (and lock them if you don't want a broken window or a dead battery), keep trash SUPER WELL contained (and OUT of vehicles, garages, and sheds!), FREEZE your food trash in a large ziploc baggie (no smell) to bring to a local compost place (Longmont Ecocycle has one), and if you MUST feed the birds, bring in bird & hummer feeders for secure storage! A fed bear is a dead bear and our wildlife deserves to have a quality life like we do! This has been a friendly message from your local SOB Committee...that's "Save Our Bears" for those who don't have the cool sticker yet! Now...about that MOOSE...! Edited 05-01-2013 10:41 PM

We definitely have some brownish yellow water right now. It gets this way every year, despite UV and reverse osmosis filters. At our house you can't notice it in a glass, but definitely in the tub. No one has ever gotten sick.

We get the water too, Kate. After adding some treatments, we determined that a small portion of it may be a higher Iron content at certain times of year (that's the case of you get brown stains you need to scrub off with pumice stones), but the rest of it seems to be tannins from decomposing plant matter. It can be pretty pronounced this time of year, but we just plunge the kids in and clean 'em off anyway.

Kate, we have a water filter for the whole house so we don't see it, but as Ben mentioned, in the Spring you will frequently get yellow or even brown water and sometimes weird floaties in the water that are apparently not toxic, just gross. One time our water filter was not working and we saw it first hand. Boil your drinking water if you're worried. It should be gone by June :)

*** Slash Chipping Event Notice ***
A Jamestown community slash chipping event at Elysian Park has been scheduled for Saturday, June 15 from 9:00am to 3:00pm or until all dumpsters are full. Please do not drop off slash at the site in advance. Bar-K is holding a similar event in July and Jamestonians are welcome to partake in their event. Similarly, Bar-K'ers and surrounding communities are welcome to bring slash down the hill to Jamestown in June.
We are looking for volunteers for this event, so if youve enjoyed the benefits of Jamestowns slash disposal program in the past or just need a little exercise, maybe you would consider volunteering for a couple of hours this time around. Please call me (Matt Kohlhaas) at 303-440-3728 or e-mail at matt@jimtown.org if you are interested.
We have strict requirements on what can and cant be dropped off.
Accepted Material Slash must be 1 to 10 inches in diameter; Cut branches off larger diameter logs; Cut widely-spaced branches in half; Keep slash in longer lengths 6 feet is good; Green slash is preferred, though dead slash will be accepted; Load material with fat end facing back of load.
Not Accepted No slash with metal in it !!! No logs or branches over 10 inches; No branches smaller than 1 inch; No rotten material… it doesnt chip; No stumps; No pine needles or leaves;
Material will be chipped directly into roll-off dumpsters. If material doesnt meet the requirements or cant be chipped, it will be turned away. Your cooperation with the above requirements will help make this event go as smoothly as possible. Call me if you have any questions. Thanks!

I have been having trouble with my internet connect, not always when the weather is bad, and was wondering if anyone else was having a problem with Full Signal? Lately it is working maybe three fourths of the time. Scott does do something that can fix this problem pretty fast. My problem is; lately it is happening all of the time not just when the weather is bad, I can have internet one minute but before I can finish a small email the service is not communicating, then maybe 30 minutes later it is working. Very frustrating!

It's May Day, International Day of the Worker.
I'm celebrating by joining the MAY DAY MARCH for MULTI-PARTY POLITICS.
The march is from the SE corner of Walnut and 30th, Boulder, (meet at noon) to the County Clerk's office to register with a MINORITY party. I will change my registration to the Green Party. -Harry
________________________
Here is why I'm doing this:
How's the two-party system working out for you?
Are you well-represented in Congress? How can Congress not strengthen background checks on all gun sales, when 90% of the country wants them?
Are you surprised that no one in Colorado's US Congressional delegation has proposed a constitutional amendment to allow the US government and state government to limit campaign spending, in spite of such direction from Colorado voters who passed CO Amendment 65 by a 3-to-1 margin last November? Don't hold your breath!
Do you identify (affiliate) with either the Democratic Party or Republican Party? One-third of Colorado voters don't. They are called independent voters. Independent voters act as if voting for the better of the R or D candidate is going to produce good government. Its not working. Voters need other choices. As long as D's or R's, with campaigns funded by essentially the same fantastically rich individuals and transnational corporations, have no effective electoral competition, they will dictate the discussion and representation of The People's interest will not improve.
I implore you, independent voter, get off the fence and register for the MINORITY party that best fits your political viewpoint. We need more than a D and an R on the ballot.
Meet me at 12:00 noon May 1, on the SE corner of Walnut and 30th St. in Boulder. We will march to the County Clerk's office and register with a minority political party. Registering as a member of a minority party is an affirmative action toward creation of a political system in U.S. politics in which the Democratic and Republican Parties, and the money which backs them, cannot dictate the boundaries of political debate.

I attended the Regional Mountain Trails meeting in Jamestown yesterday. There were representatives from the the County and USFS at the meeting. A multi-agency group of public land managers will develop a set of guiding principals and then create a map that establishes a comprehensive trail system in western Boulder County. Public monies will then be allocated over the next several decades to implement that plan. Public input and government policy will guide the principals and the plan. You can forward your thoughts on what's important to you via their website. http://regionalmountaintrails.com.
Based on my experience with the James Creek Fuel Load Reduction program, where my concerns and criticisms were deflected with "the public had a chance for input when we developed the plan", speaking out clearly when their ears are open is critical to safeguarding the public lands around our homes.

Looks like a sloppy affair through midnight, just a few inches by then, followed by fairly steady snow thru daylight hours that could accumulate to another foot or so. Don't think we will get two feet, unless we get lucky this evening with some thundersnow. Wednesday night might set a new record low for May (since 1991): 12F is the current record... Lived up here since July, 1993. In my old age, I miss alot of stuff so please forgive this ole cuss for not paying much attention. Would some one please tell me what the posted speed limit is in James Canyon where Left Hand continues to Ward to the entrance to Bar-K. I may owe a young buck an appology for doing 35 in what I have thought was a 30 speed limit. Someone know where it's posted to more than 30, I'd appreciate it, so I can make my appologies. Thanks!

Cover that Salamander ! Klaus PSA #9.....
Good evening, y'all -
some of you may not want to hear this, but this winter is not giving up without a fight. Yet another Tuesday storm (I believe this would be #5 since early April) is on its way to bring beneficial moisture (or wreak havoc on commuters and early vegetation) from Tuesday night into Wednesday. Temperatures will initially be warm enough to result in rain even higher up, but should transition to snow as colder air sweeps in from the north - well before midnight in the higher foothills, but before the morning commute even in the lowest elevations of the plains north of Denver. Now, since we are currently enjoying a 'warm' spell, roads will give off a lot of heat before allowing 'wintery' driving conditions, but this can happen really fast higher up, and might even become an issue later on Wednesday on unplowed neighborhood roads at lower elevations.
How much do I expect? Consensus of models is currently that we will receive between 3/4-1.5" of moisture (possibly more in Larimer County than further south, yes, another one of those catch-up storms for Fort Collins), but a lot of this could fall as rain at lower elevations, and even after the cold air becomes fully established by late morning on Wednesday, it should not get cold enough to get really fluffy snow, a more typical spring-like behavior after an astonishing string of cold winter-like storms that have often featured hours of fluffy snow as recently as last week's storm.
Given that much of the snow will fall during daylight hours on Wednesday, places like Fort Collins and Boulder may "just" end up with 3-6" of snow by this time on Wednesday, and mainly on grassy areas (and less traveled roads), while higher foothills should see at least twice that much, with isolated spots (Rocky Mountain National Park?!) receiving even well over a foot of dense snow. Tomorrow night, temperatures will plummet well below freezing, with the potential for record-breaking lows up and down the Front Range. In fact, all-time May low temperature records may be in jeopardy by Thursday morning (around 20F in Boulder), if we clear out for much of the night and remain calm. The air may remain moist enough to prevent such a hard freeze down here so that we could see heavy (riming) fog instead. Higher up 10F or lower are not out of the question. In fact, high temperatures on Wednesday might also not get out of the 20sF above 8K, depending on how long the snow will linger.
Things to look for: when does the precipitation start (the familiar upslope smell should kick in well before sunset tomorrow), and when do we transition to snow, and is it snowing fairly hard around morning rush hour, or is it already winding down?
If I see a big change in the model forecasts by tomorrow I may update this, otherwise -
Think snow,
Klaus

David's mom Rena was one of our first mountain "connections" after moving to Colorado. Rena was loved by many and she helped us put together the purchase of the lot on the corner of Wapiti. Before she passed away, Rena passed the business over to David and introduced us to the rest of the Mans clan and the rest is history. Through the years, David has become the "go-to guy" for honest advice and guidence relating to house and property transactions and has helped us numerous times. His generous, ethical approach in life and business always shines through. So yeah, a thumbs up for Gold Country Realty.....
PS Thanks Pat and Buddy for looking after the driveways and being there when we need you ! Wonder if the Klausmeister is out of town or not ? ....Rain would be nice.

Morning everyone, HERE WE GO AGAIN. Okay here is my plans for this next snow storm. I will be holding off on the plowing, because it gets so warm after it almost does not make sense to plow. (BUT) if you need to have me remove the snow (especially you steep driveways) be sure to call me. I will hold off as long as I can. Maybe this will be just a 4 to 5 incher and go way. I want rain and sun and then flowers now not winter anymore!! Tell your neighbor about this posting if they don't see it. PAT BROPHY 303-459-3422

Asking that folks reading the QT consider looking to Gold Country Realty when they're thinking about local Real Estate. Between my mother Rena and me we've helped hundreds of people find and sell homes in this area over the past nearly 25+ years.
I believe that my local knowledge and insight set my company apart. I'm full service (same exposure as any ReMax) and independent which gives me some allowance to cater to specific needs. Im on top of the local market, often with clients actively looking, and intimate knowledge of homes on the market (and sometimes not on the market). I know what the issues and pitfalls can be when it comes to mountain homes. You gotta be informed up here!
Gold Country Realty currently has the only home under contract in Jamestown, just up Ward St., and other homes coming on line soon. If youre Selling or Buying please give me a call, I would love the opportunity to work with you. I personally try and start with other mountain folks when Im looking for help, I think you do a better job when youre working for a neighbor.

Sometimes we get excited and have to give you the early heads up about the music and going ons for the week....
This Thursday Kevin Dooley is bringing his new all-star band. He writes: I will be playing that night with the "new four piece" that is way hot and fun. We just played in Boulder and all enjoyed it. It is myself and Eric Drobny on Upright Bass , he has played with the last few times and Bret Billings from The High Beams playing a lot of lap steel ,dobro harmonica and Alex Johnstone on Mandolin/Fiddle/harmony ,from Spring Creek.
And Saturday we are celebrating CINCO DE MERCO! Special band for the beloved holiday is Bonnie and the Bluegrass Clydes. Al's whipping up his Chicken Enchiladas (and veggie) and of course we'll have a selection of delicious Mexican beers to enjoy.
We'll fill in details later in the week. Have a good one.

Klaus, FWIW, I once walked into a moose and her calf during a snowstorm up on rainbow lakes (around a corner on the road and there they were 10 feet away). I stopped, backed a little and just talked quietly to them so they knew where I was, and I made sure not to face them or look at them too intently. They wandered off down the hill. The fact there was only one of me in the middle of nowhere may have helped.

Cannot get a cell phone micro cell to work with Exede for reason Larry mentioned - latency and non symmetrical connection. Down is fast after it begins, up (sending files or a webcam) is very slow. The problem is that things like Skype, phone apps, remote control and webcams won't work well or at all. There is usually a cap of your bytes sent and received and unless its changed can get expensive as they charge you for overages -If all you do is 1 way type internet browsing it can be fine but if you need 2 way ability for sending files you might be disappointed and might require you to sign 2 year contract to find out -Please correct me Jason if any of this sounds inaccurate. Just had a close encounter with female moose near corner of Rock Lake and Ridge roads. I guess she did not like us stopping and staring at her (no offspring visible near her). In any case, does anybody know about moose etiquette - is it advisable to stand your ground, or should one just keep moving along and away from them (which is what we did when she charged us for about 10' from a distance of less than 50')? Also, a heads-up on our next storm, looks like mostly snow for us, and could be yet another 1-2' from Tuesday evening into Wednesday. If so, we would get up to a 'normal' seasonal snowfall of over 185" by the 1st of May which is usually not the end of our season either. IOW, good moose (and chorus frog) habitat conditions in the upcoming weeks (once the snow melts). Edited 04-28-2013 07:02 PM

Satellite service, at least through Hughesnet, is much better than it used to be. I use it at home for work, but my internet usage isn't as heavy as some. And I don't live in Bar K Ranch just yet. Your mileage may vary. Disclosure: I work for a sister company of Hughesnet.

I have a cousin in Oklahoma that has satellite. If you are serious, I doubt you would like it. Speeds from the satellite down are very fast. I could send her many picture files and they would download to her instantly. Speeds up to the satellite are comparable to Dial-up. She sent me 3 pictures that were 3.0 MB - 3.2 MB each, and it literally took hours. Edited 04-28-2013 03:23 PM

None of our internet choices are perfect. At one point I've had all of them in combination, some people still do! Price/performance/personal preference/intended usage all factor in. I am certainly biased in recommending Full Signal. Scott and Erika are our close friends and neighbors in the Bar-K and have literally poured everything they have into keeping their service up and all of us connected. Someday we may have other options that might make it easy and cheap to channel high speed internet up this mountain top but until then......Full Signal is who I recommend.

@Pat...I have been using Nedernet for several years, and after some fits and starts in the early days, it has been smooth sailing for the last couple years. Outages are rare, and handled quickly. Price is reasonable. It's not the fastest internet connection on the planet--streaming video not so great, for example--but it's as good as you're going to get up here, and it's perfectly tolerable for most use. Not sure if they'll be able to get a signal over to you @ Sky Ranch, but I would certainly recommend giving them a call. David and Tanya are very nice folks.

Hello Bar-K Folks! Amy from Gold HIll (and Foothills United Way) here. I am currently working with Via on a public transport route along the Peak to Peak to Nederland and Gilpin County. Understanding that some Jamestown and Bar-K students go to school in Nederland, I am wondering if this is a route that you guys would use. I know The Climb has not been hugely successful from Jamestown to Boulder and lots of mountain residents are calling for a way to get to Nederland. Many mountain residents prefer to stay in the mountains for services!
Please do drop me an email with any and all opinions regarding ridership etc. on this proposed route. We would like to apply for the CDOT rural transportation grant by the middle of June.

With the mention of skunks on the Jamestown QT, I would like to add some important information to the conversation: The following is an excerpt from the State Veterinarian's newsletter to Colorado veterinarians:
"There has been a significant increase in the incidence of rabies over the last five years in Colorado. In addition to an increased incidence of confirmed rabies cases, there has been a strong movement westward across Colorado with a significant number of cases found along the Front Range. The predominant terrestrial animal affected have been skunks which act as a vector for infecting other mammals like dogs, cats, horses, cattle, coyotes, mountain lions, and even bison. Other wildlife species that can carry and transmit the rabies virus are bats, raccoons, and foxes. Recently, the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment confirmed that a fox in Larimer County was affected with the rabies virus. Since the 1st of this year, Larimer County alone has had ten animals that tested positive for rabies. In Colorado, there have been 30 confirmed cases in the first 3 months of 2013. There are many excellent rabies resources on the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environments webpage at: http://www.colorado.gov/cdphe/rabies With the increase in incidence of rabies comes the increased responsibility to inform and recommend that owners not only vaccinate their dogs and cats but also other animals that could be exposed to wildlife that carry and transmit the rabies virus. This would include horses, small ruminants, llamas, alpacas, petting zoo animals, and possibly other valuable livestock. Considering the incidence of wildlife rabies, the lethal outcome of the disease, and the cost and liability when people have been exposed to a possibly rabid animal, the benefits of vaccinating animals for rabies certainly outweigh other potential reasons for not vaccinating for rabies."
Last week a horse near Peetz, CO tested positive for rabies as well. Please take a moment to check your pets' medical records and have their rabies vaccines updated if they are not current. I understand that some folks do not believe in vaccinating and do not think their pets are at risk. I urge you to please consider making an exception to aid in prevention of this deadly disease. This increase in rabies over the past several years is very concerning. To date, there have been no cases (that I am aware of) in Boulder County, however there have been cases in many of our surrounding counties to the east, north, and south, so it is only a matter of time. I am not a fan of fear mongering, but I think this is very important, so please take the time to share this information with family and friends. Thanks for reading.

Road report @7:30am. Most of the Bar-K is plowed. The roads are plowed. Just a bit slippy - there's ice under that snowpack. Take care and you'll be fine. North Boulder is the usual disaster.

Thanks, Sal, looks like you got ahead one time zone already... Delta claims they will get out just 10' late, we'll see about that. Keep the snow going, we should be able to get into 60" territory for the month (53" by yesterday). The record of 87.6" in April 1995 looks safe for now (no more travel planned before May). - Klaus

i don't know why when i reply to QTs from my phone it sends that gibberish. Roads aren't too bad yet....plows were through not long ago, so there's some sloppy stuff and some snowy patches. The white ones are slick, but not dangerous yet.

Rescued a woman in the road trying to get into Bar-K with her Lexus. Wrong day wrong tires. All the Ranch roads were really slick and I'm thinking they are worse now. Anyone with current road conditions? In a funny twist of faith we bumped into Klaus in Boulder....he was on his way out of town.....guess you know what that means.

O so that's where Bob & Azul went on their adventure last night Harry! Bill Duncan called around 10pm to tell us the horses just walked by his house...Ha! Thankfully they heard Buddy's whistle and came trotting down the barn road in the moonlight safe & sound. Won't be so easy to find them once the green grass smorgasbord appears--thanks Bill & Kris!

Well it is snowing again! Maybe next year you could schedule your trips earlier in the year Klaus,or when Budhoe is available.Isabel is headed to the 4 corners area now. It should be more peaceful around here, but there could be some more dust stirred up around there.Happy Earth Day! Hoping for more flowers this year,no forest fires, snow should help. If I see a loose horse,I will try to catch it and put it in my dog yard.

Lulu, The same question was asked on the Bar-K QT after the last snow - so you can go back and reference exactly what Klaus replied. Essentially the dust was from the 4-corners area and carried up north by the storm. It was also mentioned on the local news.

Hey Klaus, Don't know if you saw the Jimtown QT, but Lyle asked a question about the brown snow. Do you have any knowledge you could share on the topic?
...Lyle then used the snow as an analogy to our bodies! I must sing praises to Lyle and Leesa. Their practice has been incredibly therapeutic in my and Chris' healing journey. We are so lucky to have them on our commUNITY!

FYI, I will be traveling again tomorrow evening (at least trying to fly out of DIA). You know what that means (Sal, what was the melody with that little song of yours?). Seriously, looks like an intense little storm, to throw us back into winter for a couple of days, mainly around sunset Monday evening. Should be a foot or so of that white stuff that will freshen things up around here. We may actually get a break for a while after that, too early to tell when the next one will hit (nothing serious through the rest of April, or so it seems right now). Is there any slash left to burn?! Cheers, Klaus Edited 04-21-2013 04:16 PM

GO SOLAR!!! If you're curious about it, come on by my house today (153 Main Street in Jamestown) from 2:00 - 4:00 to learn about the options. Free food and drinks, and party favors, too! There is no obligation to sign up for anything - just the chance to hear about some options and to ask questions, and to enjoy a lovely spring afternoon in good company! Earth Day is tomorrow - it's a good way to learn how you can reduce your carbon footprint and produce clean energy, while at the same time saving money. Solar is a win-win proposition!

Not sure if I asked about this in the past... I have weird problems with some of my electronics (a Samsung DLP TV, a Kenwood receiver, and now a Blu-Ray player) in that in the winter time they either turn on/off spontaneously or just freeze up and require being unplugged to work again. Come summer time the problem goes away. Xcel has said that they change how power is distributed in the winter (related to Eldora), and they came out and attached a monitoring device a few months ago, but those results are "lost" for the moment and they're hunting them down.
In the meantime, has anyone else experienced this or something related? Thx - Sandy
