Only got one shot I liked well enough to post it; mine is very green, due to the welder's glass I used as a filter.

Regarding the permethrin spraying, I recommend doing some research before you decide to go this route. Permethrin is toxic to cats, fish, frogs, and honeybees. Although it is considered "safe" to most mammals (depending on your definition of safe and what literature you read), it is not at all a benign chemical and is worth considering whether you want it in your environment and well water.

Thanks Andrew, I never before pointed my camera at the sun so not sure how an eclipse is supposed to look really. It was blue through the ND filter I bought at Mikes (thanks Bill!) and like you said the clouds didn't really want anyone to see it from here. Fun day just the same.

Daytime Barking.
I know that Domino & Dixie are sometimes guilty of this.
Dogs bark for a lot of reasons and it doesn't always mean no one is home.
At our house if there is a "visitor" at the fence or a car pulling into the driveway they will definitely bark.
Please, if you hear persistent barking from my dogs, call me.
My mobile phone is 303-907-0499 and Karen's is 303-817-2548

Anyone else get any eclipse photos ?

I agree, ALSO - how about folks with loud ones DURING THE DAY bringing them inside when they leave for work? I'm sure they like knowing Fluffy is enjoying the outdoors for eight hours while they are in town, but it sure stinks to have to listen to them all day (e.g. the hound from hell somewhere near Ridge or Crocket Trail...).

Thank You ! "

[political content]

Primary elections are in JUNE this year. The County Commisioner race will determine the direction Boulder County takes during the next four years on a huge range of issues, including fracking, GMO's, national forest usage, fire safety policies, etc.

The next County Commissioner in District 1 will be decided in the Democratic primary election. There is no opposing candidate from the Republican Party (or any other party).

Only voters declared as "Democratic" will be allowed to vote. So, to make your voice heard, to vote for the next Dist 1 Commissioner, you can register as a Democrat for the next 30 days. HERE'S HOW:::::::

To change your party affiliation go to the Sec. of State's website:

    https://www.sos.state.co.us/Voter/secuRegVoterIntro.do

    Click the "verify/update record" button.
Enter your personal information and press Search. (note: use the zip code where you are registered - ie, your physical address)
Click another line to update party affiliation.
Fill in your drivers license # and click Submit.
Select the party affiliation you want.
ALSO, check the line that says, "Yes, I want to be a permanent mail-in voter and automatically receive a mail-in ballot for all applicable elections."
    Click "Submit changes".

That's it. It is easier than it sounds.
You can change back to unaffiliated (or whichever party you want) after the election ends on June 26.

It looks like the Hempys have a nice rock outcrop, as does John Gustke next door. There is also an outcrop on FS land just north of there, above the firehouse. http://maps.bouldercounty.org/boco/emapping/

Thanks, Bill!. Is that rock outcropping on public land? How do you get there? I want to check things out this morning, to make sure. Looks clear so far...
We got viewing glasses at McGuckins yesterday -- they were limiting them to 3 per customer, but still had them!

Solar eclipse on Sunday:

Robert and All,

Our house (400 Rock Lake Rd) has an unobstructed view to the
west/northwest from the outcropping behind the house. I'm not sure when Sally and I will be getting home, but you are welcome to watch the eclipse from here.

I wondered if anyone could suggest a good eclipse-viewing spot in or near the Bar-K? It's basically at sunset tomorrow, so it needs to have an unobstructed view to the north of west. I was thinking, perhaps the rock outcropping above overland road on the west side of the Bar-K? Is that publicly accessible? Or is there another spot that anyone could suggest?
It's a rare treat that there's an almost total solar eclipse visible from right here, without having to go to Easter Island or some other far-away place!

I've gotten very behind on my Spring cleaning ... well, actually all my house cleaning. My friend Molly owns the Cleaning Fairies in Boulder. She is sending a two person crew up to me this week -- possibly Wednesday or Friday. If I can get one or two more homes on their schedule, she can probably extend us all a little discount. Silvia- This is the third year I am having selected trees sprayed. I use Greg Black 303-809-7910($10/tree)
They all use permethrin. This is to prevent infection. No easy treatment for infected trees. Need to spray before summer when MPB flies.

Tough call, Don, I guess this is around 7:30pm MDT? Will be pretty close to the horizon, if that is correct. I would not be surprised to see some lingering clouds&showers on the west slope that might just obscure this, but they may also have dissipated by that time of day.

Heads-up for the upcoming Saturday: we should get a half-way decent upslope event (Cold front from the north) that should help contain the fire in Larimer County, and could give us a sloppy mess that probably won't stick to roads, but could bend some aspen branches... I would also expect a hard freeze into Sunday. Does not look PSA-worthy (close to 12") right now, in fact, it could remain mostly rain, and be even less than 1/4" of moisture. If it looks like at least 6" of snow, I will update this tomorrow.

Thanks Steve E. for the link, very informative,I just dont know where a place around this area like the picture could possibly be, maybe it is a male kicked out of its colony, hangs out around here almost every spring or summer, I do know a place like the one pictured in New Mexico, where the whooping cranes nest, and I am from the east coast where I have seen such habitats in tributaries of the Bay,MD. nd VA.I'll start looking up higher, perhaps Rock Lake, or Gold Lake or even higher,Brainard area or up there, I used to be into bird watching, decades ago,and I just got exited about seeing this heron almost daily,on the ground. Western Painted turtle is doing well,He or she likes to paddle a log around the pond like a raft. Is that normal behavior for that species? Male Mallard is out more than females, but maybe they are far away as well. Everybody just feel free to do what ever you want at Penny Pond. Heck , lets just have a huge party with live bands on the deck at my house. we'll put a zip line from my deck across the pond and all jump in. I'm sincerely sorry for any misinformation about telling folks to be mel;low at this time around the pond.

The Spring issue of the Bar-K Newsletter will soon be available for everyone on the Ranch. We will be placing them in a "new" box at the bulletin board for you to pick up (you will not miss it)! Rather than hand-delivering the issues, we thought this would be a better way for distribution.

We ask that you take only one copy per household, as the Association is paying for the printing and we printed just enough. Also, if you would like to recycle yours when done, please feel free to place it back in the box (unless it's "nasty"). I am still happy to send it via email to the few who responded, so I will do that soon. I believe that it will be placed on the QT to download, so you can check there.

Be on the lookout - we hope you enjoy it!

If you have any questions, please contact Karen or me.

I've had several clients concerned about the recent wide scale pet food recall of dog foods manufactured in the Diamond Pet Food Plant in South Carolina. In case you haven't been aware of this, Salmonella poisoning was not limited to dogs, but has also affected people who handled the food. To my knowledge, these foods were not distributed in Colorado, however it is always good to check your labels, especially if you ordered the food online.

Here is a link to the list of brands that have been recalled to date:

http://diamondpetrecall.com/

Some folks like to store food in tupperware bins and may not have the bag available. When in doubt, throw it out.

I'm pretty sure herons (and most other similar birds) nest high in the treetops, in large colonies known as 'rookeries'. There was one on the Clark Fork west of Missoula when I lived there, and it was pretty obvious, even from a fairly long distance. Sally and I are going to the Mountain Communities meeting tonight in Gold Hill. If you want to carpool with us, we are leaving our house at 5:40 and leaving the Merc at 6:00.

RSVP to 303-459-0172 or just show up. Thanks, Harry

Here is the agenda:

What: Meeting of "Mountain Communities of Boulder County"
    When: Tuesday, May 15 - 6:30pm to 8:30 pm
Where: Gold Hill Community Center (upstairs at the fire barn at the West end of town)

    Topics for Discussion:

Issue: Mining: Update and open forum on application by Gold Hill Minerals, LLC to prospect for gold on national forest and private land west of Jamestown. Gold Hill Minerals may eventually reopen dozens of abandoned mines in Boulder County and adjacent counties.

Issue: U.S. Forest Service: Recreational Shooting at random locations in the national forests has been banned temporarily. What will happen after the first good rain is very much in question. Off-road Vehicle Use in the national forest is also a continuing issue. The Boulder Ranger District of the USFS is getting a new supervisor

Issue: Water: A reliable supply of clean water is critical. Private corporations have tried to buy (privatize) our water. What are our rights?

Community Rights Movement: When it comes local control of our communities and our natural resources (water, air, land), state and federal laws are are not on our side. The laws ignore the rights of communities in favor of the rights of private persons (i.e., corporations) to exploit resources and communities for private profit. The community rights movement is a way for communities to assert their rights supersede those of profit-seeking entities.

Moving Forward: Prepare for the Inner Mountain Alliance (IMA) meeting on May 23. Mountain Communities of Boulder County is on the agenda for this meeting. The intent will be to inform IMA of our group's existence and perspectives and develop a mutually beneficial relationship.

Hi Andrew, I am glad she got her fish, I did not know it was you, I was just saying in general, to everyone. I was watching through my window as she was sneaking around hiding behind the aspens on our side, stalking that fish and then she was out of my sight. Sometimes when the fish is too big it gets tossed on the bank and I was planning to rescue it if that was the case since the pond was recently stocked after being over fished. I sometimes get a bit overly protective after being gone for a while and think I am the D.O.W. at the Penny Pond. Mornings and early evening before the sun sets seem to be the most active times for the water birds. 11-4 seems to be a good time to recreate at the pond,so dont let me scare you off. In another couple of weeks or so the sensitive time will be over, mostly. Thanks for communicating.

Hey Jackie,
That was me! Yes, after throwing the stick for the dog a couple times we both saw the heron and then we saw it catch a fish- looked to be about eight inches. It was really cool to see him/her catch a fish. The dog and I saw a similar scene yesterday afternoon outside of Ward and I wonder if its the same heron? We will take our nature hikes elsewhere in the hopes that any animals we scare will go to penny pond. ps. PB is scared of most other animals, she is trusted with baby chickens, goats, ducks and humans. Just don't let her see a prairie dog...

There was just a beautiful heron at penny pond, fishing, and someone came along with a dog to play fetch the frisbee in the water. I am most certainly a dog lover, however, this is a special time of the year for other wildlife...nesting,mating,taking care of babies.Could people please not scare them away with recreating at the pond for now? Soon this time will pass and it will be fine after nesting season. That goes for you garden club folks as well. Just be quietly aware of the wild birds and animals here. Thanks for your consideration.

PSA regarding 911 vs leaving messages regarding smoke seen.
Dear Folks- I came home to a message that came from a concerned neighbor regarding seeing lot's of smoke.
No matter what the outcome, ALWAYS CALL 911 !
The dispatchers can field these calls and send Lefthand FPD to investigate and act accordingly.
You are potentially delaying apparatus and personnel to the fire as well as if it were indeed a catastrophic fire coming our way, the dispatchers would be able to issue a reverse 911 for evacuations and directions to where to evacuate to.
We do not mind if it turns out to be clouds, fog etc... There is no problem in calling 911 if you have a concern. We are available to respond and we have neighboring FPD's to assist us as well. Although anything is possible, today does not look like a High Fire Danger day.
When it's warmer and drier then I would be more inclined to think wildland fire. Of course a structure fire will put out a lot of smoke but that is usually black smoke. If you see or smell something call it in, inside your house or outside.

Thanks Anne - glad you liked them. Soon, they will be posted around the mountain top for our mountain neighbors.

What I could not convey on the Got Slash flyer - and I'll try to be brief - is that Slash Day is a first for up here. The fire dept will be chipping one truck at a time (not allowing any slash to be pre-piled) and we will not be able to leave any slash at the end of the day. This means we "may" have a line of trucks waiting to be unloaded and chipped. We really don't know what to expect, but we are excited for the opportunity for people to clean, and get that nasty stuff gone. This is a great chance for all of us.

We could use volunteers to help get the trucks unloaded quickly and I'm sure for other things - not there yet. If you or anyone else on the mountain top would like to help, please call Margie or Carl - numbers on the flyer. Since it is over a month away we are hoping to organize a schedule for that day. Stay tuned and thanks in advance to all!

Enjoy the day and Happy Mother's Day!

Boulder County Forest Health Updates - May 10, 2012 (part 2 of 2)

Chainsaw Safety and Skills Training Opportunity: This Saturday, May 12

The Environmental Group (TEG) and “Saws and Slaws” of Coal Creek Canyon would like to extend an invitation to Boulder County resident to participate in an upcoming chainsaw safety and skills training. This training is being offered this coming Saturday, May 12th from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The training will start at Coal Creek Canyon Fire Station #1, 30579 Highway 72, and then will go to field later in the day.

This quality, hands-on training will give you the skills you need to effectively and safely use a chainsaw for forest health and property maintenance.

The training will be presented in three parts: 1) Chainsaw Maintenance – cutting safely requires a well running saw. 2) Chainsaw Safety & Personal Protective Equipment - including things to watch out for while cutting. 3) Tree Felling & Cutting Skills – classroom review followed by field exercises.

Presented by: Eric Philips, Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator for Boulder County and Eric Folwell, NWCG ENGB, Forester and Forestry Consultant to Boulder County

Participants: Please bring the following: a lunch, plenty of water and your own gear (including: chain saw, helmet, gloves, ear and eye protection, chaps. Wear long sleeves, pants, and sturdy work boots).

Space is limited for this training. Please contact Cesar Gellido at 303-818-7897 or cgellido@gmail.com if you would like to sign up to participate in this training. The training cost is $40 per person. There is an opportunity to work off the classroom fee with volunteer labor during one of Coal Creek Canyon’s regular Saws & Slaws community forestry events. When you register for the training ask Cesar for more details about how to “volunteer” to work off the classroom fee.

Cheers,
Ryan

Boulder County Forest Health Updates - May 10, 2012 (part 1 of 2)

Forest Stewardship Tip of the Day: O Those Pesky Ips Beetles

Forestry Tip of the Day: As we continue to move into warmer spring time temperatures we are seeing more Ips beetles (aka pine engraver) flying and infesting freshly cut slash, fresh firewood piles, storm damaged trees and other weakened stressed pine trees. When surveying your land for ips infestation look for small accumulations of frass (aka boring dust/saw dust) at the base of living pine trees or little piles of saw dust looking material accumulating on the top side of fresh firewood piles or fresh slash piles. This frass is actually beetle poop and is one of the main visual signs of ips beetle infestation.

Why is this important?? This time of year while ips beetles are flying we can use their beetle biology to our advantage. In the next section I will explain a management technique known as “green chaining”. I apologize for the long forestry tip of the day today this technique is a bit complicated but if done correctly can be highly effective at helping control ips beetle populations! Like always call with questions!

Ips beetles are very attracted to freshly cut “green” (material cut from a still living green tree) pine slash and logs. We can use this knowledge to our advantage by intentionally cutting this time of year and stacking green pine slash and pine logs in piles in an area of our property that is away from high value trees and easy to access for disposal. These piles of green branches and logs will attract ips beetles to them and in essence bait the Ips into these piles. Ips will infest that material and we know that it takes them 4-6 weeks to complete their life cycle from eggs to flying adults.

Once ips complete their life cycle they will fly out of the infested slash pile and if that same pile still remains green/wet and attractive the beetles will turn around and re-infest that same material and begin building their populations within the green pile of material.

We can continue to use ips biology to our advantage by continuing to cut and make sure that we add freshly cut pine slash to these infested piles at intervals of at least every 3-4 weeks. This will ensure that our slash pile always has freshly cut material available that is both attracting new ips beetles to the pile and also helping keep the existing ips populations in the pile. The key to green chaining is creating a continuous supply of freshly cut slash during their flight period.

A very important step when green chaining is that you MUST destroy the pile of slash and therefore the breeding beetles in the slash before the pile dries out to the point that it can no longer support new ips beetle reproduction. I would recommend that you haul that pile of infested slash to either the Allenspark or the Nederland community forestry sort yard site. If you don’t want to haul the material then you could also chip these piles.

To conclude, you basically use freshly cut green pine slash or logs as “bait” for the beetles. You “trap” them in the material and then haul that infested material to one of our community forestry sort yard sites before the beetles have finished their life cycle. Now, I should caution that this technique is not guarantee and there is a chance that ips will infest living trees near your slash and log piles. Beetles don’t seem to read our beetle biology text books… This is why we recommend stacking the material away from large prized pine trees that you don’t want infested.

So this time of year it can actually be an advantage if you cut, leave the slash on the ground for 3-4 weeks and then either haul that material to a sort yard site or chip that material back onto the landscape. Good luck! Get those saws out! Now is a great time to be in our woods cutting!

Cheers,
Ryan

THURSDAY AT THE MERC-

We have two really cool bands coming up the hill to wow everyone.

CLOUDS AND MOUNTAINS and PRINCESS MUSIC are both coming to play and are different groupings of talented musicians. You will recognize Macon from Paperbird, Blake from the Dovekins, Laura Goldhammer from her multimedia show a couple of years back and more more more!

With the ethereal glimmer of sunset clouds and the massive maturity of
ancient mountains, the aptly named Clouds and Mountains is the new project of Colorado music scene fixture Macon Terry. Aside from Terry on guitar and vocals, Clouds and Mountains has a
variable cast of Terry's friends filling out the sound on record and on stage.

Princess Music has people all over the area excited- they are beautiful and unusual.

For dinner we are having Thai!- a yummy bowl of green curry, some rice and a spring roll and so on.

We hope to see you for this music!

To people who don't read the Jamestown QT:

The Jamestown area is at risk of having a major, industrial project, a GOLD MINING operation, start up just outside of Jamestown in the very near future. The Boulder County Land Use Department is reviewing an application from Gold Hill Minerals, LLC, a Florida corporation, to prospect for gold. If this operation is permitted, we will have constant noise (three shifts per day) and truck traffic around Jamestown and up and down James Canyon and Lefthand Canyon. Danger of mineral-laced water from runoff will exist to the Lefthand Water District, which servers about 19,000 people in the area. Fire dangers from the gas-burning, drilling equipment is another concern.

You can help put a stop to this.

1. Send comments to the Boulder County Land Use Department. Comments due by May 22, 2012. Here is the Docket Information for DPR 12-0001, the development application from Gold Hill Minerals. http://www.bouldercounty.org/property/buil...ails.aspx?docid=349 This site will tell you where to submit your comments.

2. Support local efforts to stop the mining before it starts. Possible actions include: Enact a strict noise ordinance in Jamestown, consistent with the quiet nature of the Jamestown community. Control access from Overland Road to the access roads to the planned mining sites. Sue. ???

3. Subscribe to the Mountain Communities of Boulder County QT (http://www.quicktopic.com/47/H/7HFnRFbEPD2Ay) to stay informed of developments - not just the gold mining issue but also happenings wrt target shooting in the national forest and off-road vehicle use.

4. Attend the next Mountain Communities meeting on May 15 in Gold Hill. (announcement will be made shortly)

We can stop Jamestown from becoming an industrial mining town, but it will require community vigilence and action.

Hi all,
Just came up the hill from Jamestown, and there were three or four *big* rocks in the uphill lane, just below the 6-mile marker -- and with the fog, I almost didn't see them in time. Hey All - Didn't see an earlier post so thought I'd mention this wildlife siting. There's a mother fox with her kits hanging out just above the straightway just east of town, on the Jamestown-side of the tight curve. I've now seen them twice in as many evenings driving home. The kits are bouncing around and are sometimes in the road. They sure are cute and I know my night would be ruined if I hit one, so I'm slowing down. Hope this doesn't ignite a fire storm of controversy, one way or another. This announcenment paid for by the Political Action Committee DLROWEB (Don't Like Running Over Wildlife, especially Babies).

Klaus-meister speaketh...

PSA#6 - yes, you read that right!

Good afternoon, y'all (with all my recent trips to Texas, something
is rubbing off)...

this will be short and sweet, a band of snow has set up in the higher foothills
from the southwest corner of Boulder corner towards Lyons, snow is just
beginning to stick above 8K, and should continue well into tomorrow morning.
I am expecting the precipitation shield to widen and lower in elevation
overnight, but the highest amounts (falling all as snow) should remain
in the higher foothills and mountains.

I won't bore you (and myself) with the details of this storm, but this is
about the 5th one this spring (since March) that had initial great promise
(2"+ in several model runs a week ago), only to fade upon getting closer
to the 'delivery date'. However, the models have now settled on 0.5-0.8"
of moisture in the next 24h, and with the banding going on right now,
I would not be surprised if some lucky folks will eke out 1"+ of H2O.

This will translate into 6-12" higher up, while even Boulder might see
some white stuff falling out of the sky overnight, but it should not stick
at those lower elevations. Even the higher roads may not get so bad with
all this recent warm weather. But some early aspen (leaves) may take
quite a beating in this storm.

There is potential for a warmer follow-up storm later this week, let's hope
we can get another 0.5" or so of moisture to keep May from being yet
another DRY month.

If it clears out tomorrow night (Monday into Tuesday), I would not be surprised
to see a freeze all the way to the plains, with low 20s common higher up.

If we should get lucky and remain snowy most of the day tomorrow, we could
see a rare May near-freezing high temperature along Peak-to-Peak highway.

Cheers,

Klaus

Is the June 30th slash day the one referred to earlier (4/19/12) as a County/FS/LHFD team effort or is this the annual Bar-K event? Either way, is there a limit on the amount of slash residents can bring this year? No matter what is offered it is greatly appreciated.

Longmont's new oil/gas rules still too strict say state, COGA
By Scott Rochat Longmont Times-Call

If you go
What: The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, have invited Longmont-area residents to bring their questions about state regulation of oil and gas development to a public outreach meeting.

When: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 7.

Where: City of Longmont's Civic Center Complex, 350 Kimbark St.

State officials said the meeting will provide information about their agencies' roles in regulating oil and gas development. Information will be provided about existing regulations. State staffers will be available to answer written questions about the regulatory aspects of oil and gas information and to speak individually with interested residents.

Further information about the state's oil and gas exploration and production environmental requirements for air, water, and hazardous and solid waste is available online at the Public Health Department's website, http://cdphe.state.co.us/oeis/oil_gas/OilAndGas.html

LONGMONT -- Longmont's proposed oil and gas rules drew a simple response from the industry and the state: You don't want them, you don't need them and you can't enforce them.

Letters released Tuesday from the Colorado Oil and Gas Association and the Colorado Attorney General's Office urged the city to drop some or all of its new rules. COGA, an industry group, called the regulations "unnecessary and overreaching," arguing that the existing state system already protects local interests.

"Accordingly, COGA respectfully requests the city of Longmont reject the proposed regulations and work within the state's robust regulatory framework," wrote Andrew Casper, a COGA attorney.

Longmont has had a moratorium on oil and gas permits since December, so that it can prepare the city's first new rules on drilling and operating wells since 2000. As drafted, the regulations set up a two-level system: a set of "minimum" standards that largely reflect state guidelines and a tougher set of "recommended" standards that companies can agree to in order to get a permit approved more quickly.

Some things remain the same in both sets, including a ban on surface drilling in residential zones unless there is no other way for operators to reach the minerals they own. But that ban drew fire from the state. Assistant attorney general Jake Matter wrote that if an operator already had a state permit allowing drilling in the area, the city would have no authority to block it.

"The city should refrain from passing a residential development ban," Matter wrote, saying the city should instead work with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission through its local government designee, city planner Brien Schumacher, to talk out local issues.

Matter also objected to city rules on areas such as water quality testing, wildlife protection, hazardous material disclosure, inspections and a requirement that wells stay at least 150 feet from a river, saying the areas all trespassed on state authority.

Though not unexpected, the letters put the city in an awkward spot. Even as state authorities urge the City Council to do less, residents have frequently packed the council chambers to urge Longmont to do more, even at the risk of a lawsuit.

Even before the letters arrived, the city had pulled back some of its regulations to avoid battles it didn't think it could win. For example, the original rules banned waste disposal facilities from city limits; the new draft allows them in heavy industrial zones only. On Tuesday, the council went into a closed-door session to get legal advice on the draft regulations and discuss negotiating positions for "potential stakeholder agreements."

Mayor Dennis Coombs said Tuesday that he felt the city had taken a secure position, and that he wasn't ready to back up further.

"My understanding is we pushed these 'yellow light' issues because they have not been proven absolutely in court," Coombs said, referring to issues that have neither been denied to cities by a court (red light) nor expressly permitted (green light). "We're drawing our line in the sand and saying 'This is our line.'"

He added that with only 17 state inspectors, he didn't have a lot of faith in the COGCC's ability to enforce regulations, however good they might be.

"So much depends on self-reporting," he said. "When was the last time you were driving down the highway at 80 mph and said 'Oh, I'd better call the state patrol?'"Meanwhile, the Legislature could outflank the entire discussion. A bill before the House's Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources Committee, HB 12-1356, would deny severance tax revenue to any city or county that put restrictions on oil and gas drilling. If it passes, that would mean any regulation by Longmont would cost the city $88,000 a year in revenue.

Sandi Seader, assistant to the city manager, said the bill would also mean that months of work by the city, its residents, and everyone else involved, would have been wasted.

"To pull this kind of maneuver in the middle of that conversation, to us, is detrimental," Seader said. "It is, to some extent, usurping the public process of a municipal body. Which the state has the right to do -- but it should do so carefully."

A current draft of the proposed city regulations can be found online at ci.longmont.co.us/city_council/agendas/2012/documents/041712_5B.pdf

Forest Stewardship Tip of the Day: Attend a FREE Wildfire Mitigation Community Training

Forestry Tip of the Day: We highly recommend you attend one of upcoming community FREE trainings focused on wildfire mitigation. The program is titled “The Keys to Creating and Maintaining Effective Defensible Space” and the next training dates are being offered this week at 6:30 p.m., Wed. May 2 in Nederland and next week at 6:30 p.m., Wed. May 9 in Coal Creek Canyon. Above normal temperature and below normal precipitation over the past two months has created dangerous wildfire conditions in the County with the potential for a long and active wildfire season. Join us and learn how to improve the chances of your home surviving the next wildfire. Complete training online: http://www.bouldercounty.org/property/fore...sthealthevents.aspx

Why is this important?? These wildfire mitigation trainings focus on action oriented steps that all landowners can take to dramatically improve the chances of their homes surviving the next fire. We have already offered three of these trainings (Gold Hill, Pine Brook Hills and Sugarloaf areas) in this series with well over 100 landowners in attendance. Many attendees have provided very positive feedback about the information they learned at the training! Folks leave the trainings feeling motivated and empowered to take action on their land. One landowner mentioned that he has lived off of Sugarloaf Mtn Road for over 40 years, is a former Sugarloaf Fire Protection District Chief, and has attended many wildfire mitigation trainings throughout his time spent in the community. After attending the training he said, “I was actually a bit surprised that I left the training with new science based recommendations for my land. I am excited to take action and improve the chances of my home surviving the next wildfire”. After the training he was so motivated to take action that he invited Ryan Ludlow, Boulder County’s Outreach Forester up to his home for a free wildfire mitigation site assessment.

Here is a Daily Camera article about the series of community trainings: http://www.dailycamera.com/boulder-county-...ountain-communities

Wanted: Someone with a chainsaw and truck able to help us for a day. We recently found 3 "hot" beetle trees near our house above Rock Lake. We've taken one of them down, but the other two are too big for us seniors with a fairly short saw to handle, and we need to get them and the slash taken to one of the dropoff places, in Ned or by Meeker Park. Would someone be willing to work with us this Saturday, May 5, to take down and trim 2 trees, load the wood (with our help) onto your truck, and take it to the dropoff place? We would of course pay for the use of your truck and gas as well as your time. Please give us a call at 303-443-5382.

I have to agree with you about the mitigation work, Bill. I'm sure the FS is on a low budget, just like everyone else, but it seems to me all of that dry, dead stuff on the ground would work against us in a fire. As for the big piles, there was a pile like that over near my house (on High Lake) and one day last summer it was just gone, as in hauled away. Not sure if that's on the agenda for all those big piles around the K--but I hope so because right now they're just sittin' there lookin' ugly. And you're right...if they're planning on burning them as they stand, those piles will smolder for days if not weeks.

The FS (contracted) work was more likely a profitable logging operation under the weak disguise of a "mitigation project". Those piles in their present form do not appear to be typical burn piles. Each one, if left in its present state, will likely burn or smolder for days. The fact that public comment is not possible for issues of "mutual concern" should be a concern.
While I appreciate the efforts of the FS to control the shooting situation (and have communicated this to the FS office in Ft. Collins), I must admit that their track record as a whole leaves MUCH to be desired.

According to the USFS about two weeks ago, the piles are scheduled to be burned this next winter. I consider this a potentially BIG problem so anything you can say would be a good idea. Ah yes...our bear friends are awake and ready to frequent the places they remember finding food in the past.

Please please PLEASE help keep them alive and teach them that there is nothing here for them!!! Hopefully, Jamestown School will have the bear bar back on the dumpster, which should always be locked. Hopefully, we ALL can remove trash from our vehicles (and lock them), clean our dishes and kitchens every day, freeze our trash so there is nothing stinky, store trash in bear-proof containers or in places where bears can't smell it (i.e. NOT in vehicles or sheds, PLEASE!), and secure bird feeders or not have them at all.

If we ALL make a concerted effort to take these simple preventative measures RIGHT NOW, these beautiful creatures can continue LIVING and searching for food elsewhere.

THANKS for your support! Save Our Bears!

THURSDAY! SOME TRAIN YARD!

These are some of the members of Halden Wofford and the High Beams- should be a good old time.

We'll have Vietnamese noodles with pork, vietnamese salad with chicken, coconut rice and more vietnamese yummy little doodads on the plate.

Join us! Here's more:

Acoustic Roots. Some Train Yard offers a time-tested sampling of acoustic blues and early country, mixed with some very traditional bluegrass and very original home-spun tunes. Bret Billings plays dobro, acoustic steel guitar and Robert Johnson style slide. He also blows a mean harp and sings lead and harmony vocals. Eric Drobny brings great time and tone to the upright bass and sings impeccable high harmonies. Kevin DeForrest writes most of the original material, plays rhythm guitar and sings lead and harmony as well. Together they create a very buttoned-up, organic sound that will please even the most discerning listener. 80+ years of combined musical experience, time-honored and inexplicably fresh, Some Train Yard offers good songs, deftly delivered.

Larry and Silvia, nice observational record. However, in 2004, we lost all of our snow by the end of March of that year. Of course, we ended up with plenty of snow AFTER that (April 2004), so I am not so sure whether Larry's snow records had a double entry that year or not. BTW, this year's winter was NOT a dry winter, we are still ahead of normal for the whole season due to those winter storms, especially the one in early February. However, the lack of snow this spring is historic, with under 1" in March, and not even a foot so far in April. And, yes, I do believe we will get more snow still to come, probably as early as this weekend, but probably not much.

Snow melt! I have informally watched to see which day every year that the last little patch of snow melts on my property (always on the leach field). This usually happens in the second half of May. Because there was much less snow than normal, April 24th this year is an absolute record. However, I'm not sure how I should treat this informal record if we get a bunch of new snow between now and late May.

Aspen leaves! Others have kept track of weather and wildlife, but I've kept informal records on the leafing of the aspen trees for the 11 years I've lived in Bar-K, and this is the earliest that the aspen leaves have come out. Usually, our trees leaf out around May 17th, although last year they came out a week later. Here it is 3 weeks earlier than the average -- and I'm looking over a sea of light green. Beautiful...

Hey Again Bar-K Folks,

This post is in response to Chuck D. and Anne C. post/question about mountain pine beetle. They said, "What looks to be a mountain pine beetle landed in front of me on my deck this morning. Could they be flying early this year?"

My Response: I would not expect mountain pine beetles (MPB) to be flying this time of year. Boulder County’s Forest Health Outreach Program continues to believe that a vast majority of MPBs are still flying during their standard flight window which occurs from about mid-July to mid-Sept. of each year. In the Bar K area I would guess that most beetles will synchronize their flight during a two week window in early to mid August. This timing can change slightly each year depending on weather and elevation.

There are a couple of possibilities which could explain your observations on your deck. Perhaps you saw an ips bark beetle and not a MPB. Ips beetles look pretty similar to mpb but they are slightly smaller, skinnier and have a “broken” shaped rear end and they are flying this time of year. Take a look at our bark beetle inspector field guide online to see high resolution images of both species of beetle. http://www.bouldercounty.org/find/library/...eetlefieldguide.pdf (our website is being updated today so if the link is broken please let me know).

It is also possible that you observed an over-wintering adult MPB that emerged from the tree that it attacked during the last 2011 beetle flight time. MPBs really only have a one year life cycle, but occasionally after a mild winter we see adults, that manage to survive the winter, fly this time of year. Those adults don’t have enough “fitness/energy” remaining to do damage to living trees. They just kind of fly about looking for a tree to infest but don’t really do much damage. Think of it like a 100 year old person trying to have kids… it just isn’t very likely. Feel free to contact me directly if you have further questions!

Cheers,
Ryan

Boulder County Forest Health Updates - April 24, 2012
(post two of two)
Forest Stewardship Tip of the Day: Ips Beetles are Flying and MPB Infested Trees are Fading

Forestry Tip of the Day: “observations from the field” Over the past two weeks I have observed Ips beetles (pine engraver) flying and attacking freshly cut “green” firewood piles and freshly cut “green” slash. I have also begun to observe trees “fading” from bright green to dull green and then to a reddish/yellowish color along the Peak to Peak Hwy Corridor due to mountain pine beetle attack during the 2011 beetle flight.

Why is this important?? Ips bark beetle fly multiple times (4-6 times) each summer and often their most damaging flight occurs this time of year in the spring. If you have been out cutting over the past two(ish) months I would recommend that you survey the “freshly cut material” (material that was still green and wet when cut) for signs of ips beetle infestation. Look for very small piles of sawdust looking material (aka frass) accumulating on the tops of logs and slash. If you see signs of ips beetle attack and don’t know what to do then please feel free to give me a call for a quick conversation about ips beetle management!

Mountain pine beetle fly once per year between mid-July and mid-Sept. The trees that were infested during last summer’s 2011 flight “fade” from green to red/yellow about 8-9 months after initial attack. Right now is a perfect time to survey your land and search for trees that are just starting to fade. These fading trees are still infested with beetles from the 2011 flight and it is highly recommended that these trees be removed at minimum a month (the sooner the better) before the 2012 mountain pine beetle flight begins (flight typically occurs from mid-July to mid-Sept.). These currently infested “fading” trees are easy to pick out on the landscape right now which is why we recommend surveying your forest for trees that are changing colors.

Both the Allenspark and Nederland Sort Yards are opening in May and they are free locations to dispose of beetle infested wood. For more information on sort yards visit: www.BoulderCounty.org/ForestHealth

Cheers,
Ryan

Boulder County Forest Health Updates - April 24, 2012
(Post number one of two)
Announcement: A Series of Local Community Trainings on Wildfire Mitigation!

The county has been working with communities throughout the foothills to set up a series of community trainings titled “The Keys to Creating and Maintaining Effective Defensible Space.” The trainings start this week and will be held in the evenings in Gold Hill (April 25), Nederland (May 2), Coal Creek Canyon (May 9) and Allenspark (May 23).

The trainings present lessons learned from the draft Fourmile Canyon Fire Assessment (http://www.fs.fed.us/rmrs/docs/fourmile-ca...minary-findings.pdf) and give participants concrete steps to take to prepare their homes and forests for future fires. Current research suggests that landowners who take precautionary action dramatically increase the likelihood of their homes surviving the next fire.

There have already been several destructive early season wildfires and the fire danger throughout the foothills and mountains of Boulder County remains high. There continues to be an early season fire ban (www.bouldercountysheriff.org/) in effect and unless we receive significantly more precipitation we may be moving into a very active and dangerous wildfire season. Right now is a very important time to learn how to prepare your home and family for future wildland fires.

Gold Hill Area Training Date
When: Wednesday, April 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Gold Hill Community Center, 1011 Main St. (above the Main Fire Barn)
Sponsor: Town of Gold Hill

Nederland Area Training Date
When: Wednesday, May 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Coal Creek Canyon Area Training Date
When: Wednesday, May 9, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association, 31528 Highway 72, Golden
Sponsor: The Environmental Group

Allenspark Area Training Date

With all this talk about hummingbirds (and feeders), it might be worth mentioning that hummingbird feeders are much liked by Ursus americanus, our friendly neighborhood bear. Some of the issues with bears in recent years may very well be linked to the preponderance of said feeders, or so it would seem. If you can hang them up really high (>10') off the ground, they may be a little less tempting to our sweet-toothed four-legged visitors. My 2c, Klaus

And adding on to the information that Karen got from the wild bird center:
For a rufous, line of sight is important. They will protect up to 4 feeders in their sight - and they are MEAN to other hummingbirds. So if you can put the feeders around corners, on the opposite side of the house, separate your feeders for the most harmonious hummingbird areas.
We will usually only get a couple rufus per year. You can tell by the color, very bright gold shiny metallic coloring, and their "hum" is higher pitched. You'll tell the difference right away. It is true that they come to our neighborhood for a shorter time, usually Mid July to Mid August, so they are only a nuisance to the other birds for a small percentage of their vacation here. However those pretty things deserve to eat too.

From The Wild Bird Center's Website:
Rufous hummingbirds show up around July 4th and can dominate feeders. To combat this, put a small feeder up away from other feeders and higher than the other feeders. Fill it with a stronger sugar solution (3:1) and the rufous will tend to prefer this feeder and leave the hummingbirds at the other feeders alone.

Wild Bird Center of Boulder Hummingbird Basics Hummingbird Feeding 101
Avoid commercial mixes and make your own nectar with the formula below.
4 parts water—1 part sugar
No honey, brown sugar, fructose, artificial sweeteners, or red dye. All of the above can pose serious health risks to the hummingbirds.
Every 3-4 days empty the old nectar from your feeder, rinse thoroughly, and fill with new nectar.
Nectar can be stored up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
No need to boil the water or nectar.
If your nectar turns cloudy, then it is starting to ferment and mold. The hummingbirds will avoid spoiled nectar and will not be motivated to return.
If your feeder gets really moldy and dirty you need to clean it well. You can use almost anything to clean the feeder, as long as you rinse the feeder well before using it. We would suggest a special hummingbird feeder brush and soapy water. Hydrogen peroxide or vinegar in the feeder overnight will also work very well. Having a hard time reaching inside the base to clean it? Put some uncooked rice and soapy water inside and give the feeder a shake to scour out the mold.

I may have started that rumor...along with the nickname "Karo Cary" :-)
Just keep them clean and full, and the hummers will come. Even though we're so close to Cary's Studio 54 we can feel the bass thumping, we can get quite the flock over here. We've managed to get them comfortable enough that they'll land on our fingers and feed, and I have to fill all the feeders 3 times a day. We only hang out 3 though, so we're like a little bodega next to Cary's Costco for Hummers

I try to build up a loyal and large enough flock that when the Rufous comes to town they're hopelessly outnumbered when they try to come bully the other hummers off the food.

Dude!! Come up to my porch. Watch the birds -- and I'll return the tools you lent me (thanks!).
As I've been told by other neighbors, my house is kind of like New York or San Francisco -- and all other houses are the suburbs. Lots of hummers all hanging together here. Studio 54 for sugar-hungry hummingbirds.
Long, long ago, it was rumored that I had a Karo Syrup tank that fed into my trees (but this is not true and would also be bad for the hummingbirds). The birds (as a species) have a memory and so come to the places that have fed them historically - for my house that's almost 20 years of always full feeders, so they are dedicated to a dedicated food source. Don't worry, you'll get some too. In the summer when we have up 10 feeders and more than 500 birds a day, they usually need to eat somewhere else as well. It's like when you can't get a reservation at Frasca in Boulder... they've got to go somewhere else.
I'm just so excited that they're back!

Marilyn, mother of 4 of us boys who selflessly and single-handedly did everything possible to make sure we had what we needed to succeed in life, passed away 75 on March 7th at 75. Ironic day since that's my oldest brother Anthony's birthday. The other photo is of my best Boulder friend Richie Blumenthal...My accountant, friend and mentor. An iconic man who brought to life so many things we all strive for.

6 cups white sugar to 1 gallon of water. Boil, cool, fill feeders.
I clean feeders with Efferdent, then hot water and let them cool. Sometimes I stick all the parts through the dishwasher (but not Sal's dishwasher, because he apparently has a sediment issue).
Happy birds!

Wow, last frost farther away than I thought. Guess it is June 1st, not May 1st. But lettuce and spinach I didn't think have very deep roots. So I'll go a head and try a small amount since the container is small and easy to carry and move indoors, and plan maybe on bringing them in every night. Then I can start a "round two" in a few more weeks.

Well. the Bar-K gardeners (community garden) are planning on an average frost date ~5 weeks away. Seed sprouting is based on optimal soil temp which varies for the plant type. You can definitely plant in containers as long as you bring them in if the temps get cold. 8 inches is the minimum depth because they will dry out very quickly and the root systems for the plants may not be strong enough to deal with the winds that we always get. Our summer storms can be interesting. You are welcome to call me or any of the other gardeners. 459-3328

I'm seeking some gardening advice. What is the average last day of frost for Bar-K? Does anyone think it is still too early to start lettuce and spinach and broccoli outdoors from seed? I use containers so they could be carried indoors if needed. Is an 8 inch deep bucket deep enough for broccoli plants? 8 inches enough for cauliflower, green beans, peas, or onions? Please advise. Thank you!

Margie, I think you're going to have to be a little more specific. So for Trash Day, Sat. June 16, volunteers are usually needed between 7a - 2p. Bring your gloves and help unload your neighbors cars and trucks full of "stuff". For the Slash program it will probably be over the course of a week or more, with help probably being needed in the evening (if it's anything like the last project).

Sal, I am surprised that it took you this long to have that problem with the dishwasher. The first summer Sandi inhabited the BarK with me, my faithful KitchenAid seemed to be losing its oomph. I replaced the dishwasher not once but twice. Finally it dawned on me that the new and improved dishwashing detergent formulation was the culprit. The phosphate-free formula was deployed in a few test markets, at first, but now you can no longer buy the good stuff.

The internet is full of blogs complaining of poor performance with the new detergents. Repairmen tell tales of white scum and sobbing women. Seriously.

Personally, although surface water contamination with phosphates may be an issue, I doubt that those of us on septic systems have much material effect on that problem.

The fact is, good dish washing performance from a machine may be just a faded memory for those of us who cannot afford a high-tech water decalcifier, or cannot tolerate the high sodium content produced by a conventional softener.

Feast your eyes on this:

Bottom screen...check
Run vinegar cycle...check
Run hot water at sink-BEFORE running dishwasher -makes it real hot in there...check
Try different detergent....

Thanks Marilyn and all.

The water seems fine-always has coming up from that 700' deep well. Didn't even see the ""swampy green" this year but it's real cold and I bet at times it can be a bit hard too. The new Costco detergent is the only thing that changed so will let you know if the white film on the glasses goes away with the new kid in town. Cascade....

Sal ~ I have two suggestions for you based on our experiences. You may have tried them already, but here goes anyways:
#1. Clean the bottom filter screen before you try the vinegar trick; and
#2. We always run the High Temp option with our 7th Generation Soap. We think the hard water seems to break down the soap and scum mo' better.

Pelican Water softener:

Bill, Chris, and All,

Our Pelican NaturSoft water softener was install about 2 weeks ago. The installation, by Mark Bull, was straight forward [for a plumber].
I like the results, so far. The scum in the dishwasher disappeared right away. It seems like the skin on my hands is smoother, and I'm finding less hair in the shower drain.

I like that the water softener does not need maintenance - no adding of salt.

Well, every year for all the many I;ve been here, we get "dirty faucet water and toilet water for a time (days? weeks:) until the snow melt has finished seeping into the soil and water table. It always clears up when things dry up. In the meantime----guess a few specks of dirt haven't seem to effect me adversely. I do not have a dishwasher (probably the only one up here who doesn't) so can't offer a remedy there. I do know the folks on Sky Ranch also have the problem each Spring.

Sal, you can try adding a rinse agent like jet dry.  If it's food left on your dishes look inside the bottom of your dishwasher and see if there is any skum build up you can scrape off.

Ooops, I made a mistake in my post. The western painted turtle is the state reptile, not amphibian. On March 16,the Tiger salamander became the state amphibian.I should have looked it up first. I was just so exited about them both being here in the BarK. The turtles and salamanders still cross both roads every year, moving from Penny pond to Rock Lake,so be on the lookout, ducklings will be on the move at some point ,I will post if and when they are hatched if I see them. There are currently some Mallards hanging out around Penny pond. I have not seen our Heron yet,but there seems to be a fish shortage here this year.

My personal favorite floor guys....

Dale Day... When he is not playing classical upright bass for the Boulder Philharmonic "he's on his knees" layin down hardwood. Dale's work is clean and meticulous and he does unfinished and prefinished wood floors. The prefinished floors he did in our bedroom went down in 1 day and he did a contrasting parque-style border that looks awesome. He is also an expert on matching an existing floor to a new one. Dale does not do finishing usually and for that job I recommend Ferid Kurjak - owner of Front Ramge Floors. He uses any type finish you want Glitza-the best but the smell !! - all the way down to the water borne coatings. His work is also impeccable and he is amazing to watch. He's also a professional musician-a rock drummer ! Both of these guys know Bar-K and don't charge extra to get here.. Mention my name.

Fundraiser for Sean Larson’s medical expenses

Please join us this Sunday, April 15th in the town hall at 2:00pm for a beautiful hour of sending pure unconditional love and light to assist Sean in his healing process. Together, we will connect with him and know that he knows that all of those who love him in Jamestown, love him unconditionally and are sending him healing loving light, strength and support for the process of his choosing, regardless of his choice to stay or go.

I will be teaching & leading all that are willing Sheng Zhen Wuji Yuan Gong — The qigong of Unconditional Love.
”what…” you ask? Qi, pronounced chee, is basically energy. Gong translates as work or to work. Thus, qigong is using your energy to work. The form we will be doing is Awakening the Soul. This is seated in a chair and there are only 8 movements. It is easy to learn, fairly easy to do, and incredibly powerful, especially with a large group. Participation is not required but we would be in great gratitude if you would open your mind and heart and simply just do it, you will be glad you did. For many it feels like… yeah… they exercised and have the warm, fuzzy feeling of the most comforting, loving hug they have ever gotten. Deep inhale… Pause… You remember...

We will have an alter for Sean and would love for you to bring some token for the alter that best captures his love and beauty.

20 minutes to learn the form // 15 minutes to set intentions and place alter items // 25 minutes of solid doing the practice of Awakening the Soul and sending pure white unconditional loving light to Sean Larson and all who need it.
If you happen to have some extra $ to help pay for Sean’s incurring medical bills, we will have a donation box on the alter.

Hello Bar-K neighbors,

Do you have experience with a tile/ hardwood/ travertine floor installer that does quality work for a fair price?

Personal referrals are preferred vs. us just randomly calling local businesses, so we appreciate any recommendations. Please respond to [ wcedwards40 at hotmail com]

Thank you,
Craig & Rachel

Regarding the salamanders,Our family noticed they were at Rock Lake a couple years ago,so we rescued a couple from the pond area near the recycle center in Boulder, my oldest daughter had one she found in the recycle bin as a pet for a couple years,Sally. anyway ,we relocated a couple to Rock Lake only because we saw them there. We also rescued a couple Colorado Painted turtles, the current state amphibian, from the middle of Nelson road and relocated them to the Rock Lake because we had seen them there and in Penny Pond. Also, Ducks nest at Penny pond and then the mom takes the small ducklings up to Rock Lake when they are about a week or so old,Could we also get Duck and Turtle crossing signs? They cross Ranch Rd. and Rock Lake Rd. every year, there is a trail they use through the swampy part of the horse pasture,it seems to happen every year around this time or a little later for ducklings. We are so glad they are thriving.I personally still like the Painted turtle as the state amphibian. If you turn them upside down, they have orange colored designs on the bottom.

I would bet they are not leaving the water, but going back to the water to breed or lay eggs.
