Further to my message in May this year. I made my visit to Broxted and other villages in June and was pleased to see places where my ancestors lived. I was surprised to see Brick End cottage still there and a Charles Wright living there. I visited the Prince of Wales pub, and St Marys Church where my grt grt grandparents got married. I left a note in the visitors book. When I am working on my family history now I will know what these places looked like.

Further to my message, last year, regarding the Wright family. I will be coming up from Cornwall, where I now live, to visit Takeley, Broxted, Thaxted and Dunmow, in June this year, to research further into my ancestors. I want to take as many photoes as I can of these villages, as this may be my last chance to visit. If anyone has any information on the Wright family I would be glad to hear from them. For instance, my grt grt grt grandmother Susan Wright (nee Monk) was staying in the Dunmow Union Workhouse with her children in 1841. There is no mention of her husband James Wright. They married on 17th May 1828, and lived in Broxted. They lived at Brick End, in Broxted.

I am surprised no one has replied to Mrs Joyce re The Flying Rat.I believe it was one of Broxteds Pubs-of which we have none now.It has been Known as the Flying Rat for as long as I can recall which isnt long-from the 1960's although now unfortuneately it is called Walnut tree cottage I think.I have always thought of flying rats to be another name for pigeons although I may be mistaken.

In response to Dave Wright about Freddie Salmon.. Dave, I have a photo of Freddie taken in 1969 on a visit to Broxted. No relation, but Freddie went to school in Broxted with my mother (Laura Poole b. 1898 Broxted). She introduced us to him during our visit in 1969. I took his photo. I also have a picture of him after this when he was 100 yrs old from a Dunmow newspaper clipping. If you are interested, please email with "Broxted" in subject line. Thanks. Researching the Salmon Family from Finchingfield,Great Bardfield, Stebbing and Dunmow. The Salmon group of researchers I work with have identified Sharpes Farm as being connected to John Salmon and our family. Can anyone give us any information ? Our earliest ancestor is John Salmon b.1630 at Finchingfield. The family appeared to own some land and Salmon's Farm at Bardfield. We would love to hear from anyone who might be connected to us. Other names related to our research include HARRINGTON,FITCH,BREWTY,BEAL,BRETTON,CHAPMAN,BYATT,PASFIELD,SHONK,OLLEY,HAWKINS,THURGOOD,RICHARDSON and TURNER.

Hi I used to live in Broxted as a child. I left in 1978 to go and live in Telford in Shropshire. I was known at Denise Ede and attended Great Easton Primary School from which I have many happy memories. I was also a member of the church choir when Rev Filby was there. Broxted has stayed in my heart and brings back many happy memories since I left. I have only returned once but have promised myself that I will return to the village in the very near future

A group of us family historians are cooperating to build a database specifically for the surname SWALLOW in and around Herts. My own SWALLOW link is with The Hadhams and London. I also manage a world wide SWALLOW one-name study which has about 6000 individuals, marriages and children, many from our area of interest. There are of course many more SWALLOW individuals than 6000! If you would like to help and thereby gain too, please contact me at swallow.john@gmail.com. DO NOT SEND ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION AT THIS TIME. A document explaining what we do, how and why will be sent to you. Thereafter, if we have engaged your interest, we can begin to exchange data.
ONE ITEM IS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST Alfred James SWALLOW dob 1852 married Mary Ann SMITH of Broxted in St Mary's Church on the 19 May 1877. We can't find any issue of this marriage. Do you know anything about Alfred or Mary John Swallow, Guild of One-name Studies Bristol UK

Hi Angela, I have a photo (under glass) hanging on our wall. It was always in my grandmother's house when I was growing up. It is of Charles Turner, taken in 1902 on the road near church..it says. It also said that Charles Turner was wounded in the war in 1918. Since my mother was born in Broxted in 1898, and the boy (Charles Turner) in photo looks to be about 9 or 10?? (not sure), I think they were neighbors living in The Maltings. I often heard my grandmother, and my mother mention "The Turners" even though my grandmother POOLE and my mother, Laura POOLE DELIGHT were now living in California USA. Could this be YOUR Chas. Turner I have a photo of? Can you give me some dates and family names? Thanks. Hope I can be of some help. Cheers! Hello all! I have recently discovered that my great, great grandfather Henry Barltrop (Barttrop - various spellings possible) was born in Broxted around 1817. He was married to a woman named Betsey and had six daughters. They were all born there as well. In the 1861 census they were living in Pound House which i believe was near St. Mary's church. If anyone might have any information about them or about Pound House i would be greatly appreciative. I am planning on visiting the town in mid-January 2006. Thank you William Schulz (Hamilton Ontario Canada)

Hi My great great uncle, Walter Chapman was landlord of the Prince of Wales between 1882 and about 1899. He was married to Mary Ann Brown, whose mother also owned the Butcher's Arms, Great Easton from about 1878 to 1895. Walter was born in Great Easton about 1845 and had 3 brothers - George,Alfred and Arthur. The last three brothers left the area to work as Draymen in London, but George also returned to the area with his family about 1898/99. I would be interested to know if anyone has any knowledge or information about the Chapman family in Broxted. We are hoping to visit the area in early November. Thank you John

Hi, please can anyone help ? I am trying to find who my greatgrandfather really was. I believe he lived for a while with a family from Broxted, I have traced them to Surrey and West Ham and finally to Brixton. He was admitted to Brentwood Industrial School on his 10th birthday (15/8/1869) and returned to Brixton exactly 6 years later. Stepfather James Wallis b. Broxted 1842, Mother or stepmother Ann Wallis b. Broxted( ?? (formally Monk) Sister Eliza b. Broxted 1864 Brother Henry b. Mitcham Surrey 1868 Brother William b. West Ham 1873 Sister Annie b. ?? Sister Ellen b. Brixton 1881 My greatgrandfather was Frank but what was his real surname ?? Did Ann look after him for someone else in the family ?? This family unit were also very friendly with the Carr family from Henham/Broxted, they were lodgers and neighbours at different times in Mitcham and Brixton. Frank doesn't appear with this group on the 1871 census, when he would have been about a year and a half and by 1881 he is listed at Brentwood Industrial School. In 1891 he is married in Brixton and my grandad is born.

Hello again. My Aunt Lucy POOLE (Delight) who was born in Broxted in 1893, had in her belongings a Sampler made by a fellow student at Broxted School, probably in the late 1800's. The name on it is Eleanor SHELFORD. Does anyone know a family by the SHELFORD name who lives in the Dunmow vicinity? The sampler is at my cousin's home in California. Thank you very much for any information on the SHELFORD name and how we could contact them. Cheers! Evelyn

Reply to Mrs J Eynon. Charles Carter was recorded in the 1891 Census as being in the household of Esther Hollingsworth, a 50 year old widow who was described as "Care of Barnardos Boys". The address was Pooles Cottage, Brick End, Broxted. Charles Carter was 6 years old and there was another boy in the house - Frank Egon (age 9). The other occupant was Charles Hollingsworth, Esther's 17 year old son, who was an Agricultural Labourer.

I note with interest that Broxted Hall, and its former residents George and Harriet Baynes feature on your village website. This couple were the Aunt and Uncle of my late Grandmother; Annie Mary Lucy Baynes. Annie lived with them at the hall as her mother had died in childbirth. If anyone has any information about this family and their time at Broxted Hall I would be most interested. Please email christinacliff@hotmail.com

I have traced my ancestry back to a John Salmon the elder of Broxted alias Chaureth his will dated 1622 mentions the following lands and property SHARPES, JARVICE CROFT, LOVES, St JOHNS LANDE (may be Sir Johns land) and FREACHES LAYES. I have 4 more ancestral wills that mention SHARPES and 1 mentions LOVES .In addition the following lands and property SMITHYES TILLS and ROWLOYS. My grand father Charles Robert Salmon was born 1874 in Broxted his father Joseph married Harriot Perry whose mother was Rebbeca Chopping. The book High Roothing an Essex Village by David Chopping not only gave me an ancestral line back to the 1500`s but an insight into their lives. My hope is that your Broxted web site will do the same

Stop Stansted Expansion Newsletter, Volume 1, Issue 6 - 27 November 2002 Welcome to the sixth issue of the Stop Stansted Expansion Newsletter. We hope that this weekly (or so) email will help keep you informed about developments in the campaign. Details will be kept to the minimum and more information on many stories can be found on the Stop Stansted Expansion website, http://www.stopstanstedexpansion.com, where you can also download posters and sign the petition. The most important resource in this campaign is its members and we want you to be up to date. If you have a news item or a notice you want to send to us, please email it to SSENewsletter@Tesco.net. What a week! Massive demonstration in Trafalgar Square; Victory in the Courts; Alistair Darling On the Run March to London At least 3000 people braved a cold and wet Saturday afternoon to demonstrate in London last Saturday. Led by celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver with his wife and baby, protesters from all over the country congregated to march past Parliament and Downing Street before meeting for a huge Rally in Trafalgar Square. They came from Stansted, Cliffe, Heathrow, Luton, Birmingham and Rugby to shout defiance. The most important thing about this demonstration is that it showed that people are standing united against airport expansion. The Government's plans to divide and rule lie in tatters. We showed that it was not about Not in My Back Yard - it's about Not in Anybody's Back Yard. Next time, when the weather is a little more enticing, we need to aim for 30,000. And of course that Judicial Review Alistair Darling was forced to surrender unconditionally on Wednesday following Tuesday's decision by Mr Justice Kay that the consultation exercise his department had hoped to railroad through was unfair and illegal. He agreed that the Department for Transport was wrong to exclude the possibility of expanding Gatwick from the consultation exercise. This does not mean that Gatwick is the chosen site, or even that it is desirable, just that the Secretary of State messed up by not including it, and may have to do the whole thing again. On Wednesday Mr Darling put out a written statement saying that he would take his medicine like a man and not appeal. We await his decision about whether to issue additional consultation documents covering Gatwick or whether to run the whole exercise again. Either way this is a major setback for the Department of Transport and has them in complete disarray. The Consultation will not now close on Saturday November 30 but will run until May next year. This means the White Paper stating the Government's preferred option for airport expansion will not appear before September next year, and more likely not until 2004. Of course, firstly the world may have changed by then - we may see demand for air travel topping out - and secondly, it will be a bit close to a general election for Tony Blair's liking, as Governments try to avoid dumping things like airports on the electorate just before asking for their vote. The war is not won but this is certainly Round One to us. In the Meantime In the meantime the campaign must go on. This respite does not mean we can drop our efforts to persuade. What it does do is give us more time for lobbying, PR activity, fundraising and a more considered and planned approach to the campaign as a whole. We will have more time to commission detailed research to counter the SERAS arguments as well as getting more people out onto the street. Transport Select Committee inquiry If the High Court decision were not enough, Alistair Darling will face a grilling at the Transport Select Committee which has effectively "called in" the consultation process. It is calling for written and oral evidence before the end of January 2003 as part of an inquiry into "The Future of Aviation". This will give a chance for opposition MPs and dissenters in the Labour ranks to put Alistair Darling on the spot, rather than leaving it all to some kind of secret consultation process. We have three months to lobby this committee, so please write in with evidence to: Eve Samson, Clerk to the Committee, TRANSPORT COMMITTEE, Committee Office, House of Commons, 7 Millbank, London SW1P 3JA. Enquiries: 020 7219 6263 Fax: 020 7219 6101. Committee Office Information Line for recorded information about Committee meetings: 020 7219 2033. Money, Money, Money Now is the time to start some serious fundraising. Thousands will be needed to continue the campaign up to the White Paper and beyond, so now is the time to start planning those fundraising events. All ideas welcome. How about a local event, a quiz night, bring and buy sale, sponsored walk, auction of promises, all the usual stuff. If each parish does one fundraising event over the next three months then who knows what we could do next. Please send details of your events firstly to sse@webserve.co.uk for inclusion in the main diary of events and secondly to SSENewsletter@tesco.net for inclusion in this newsletter. Speaking of Which. Great Dunmow Christmas Fayre and Late Night Shopping, Friday December 12, 2002 Local SSE Supporters will be mounting a Fundraising Tombola stall in the Market place. Contribution of bottles, cakes, sweets, choccies etc are most welcome. Helpers on the night also welcome. The Late Night Shopping has a Fancy Dress Theme so please feel free to express yourself. There will be a planning meeting for this event at 4pm on Saturday 30 November at the United Reformed Church Hall in New Street, Great Dunmow - all supporters welcome! If you want more details, want to donate a prize or help out on the night contact John Murphy on 01371 876340 or Johnpmurphy@tesco.net

Stop Stansted Expansion Newsletter, Volume 1, Issue 5 - 14 November 2002 Welcome to the fifth issue of the Stop Stansted Expansion Newsletter. We hope that this weekly email will help keep you informed about developments in the campaign. The Stop Stansted Expansion is reaching its climax for this year. But remember this is just stage one. The campaign needs to continue after Christmas and may have to intensify after the government publishes its white paper, so there is no time to Relax. At the moment the High Court is hearing our application for a judicial review of the Consultation process. We believe that the Government has been unfair and biased in its whole approach to consultation over the SERAS report and are asking the Court to make the consultation so far null and void. If we win, and we should know by next week, then this will be a serious setback for the government, but it will not be the end of the mater. If we lose, then at least we will have had a chance to register our protest in a forceful way, and we are sure that the Government is not enjoying this process, win or lose. Taking the Protest to London On Saturday November 23rd there will be a protest rally bringing together anti-airport protesters from all over the region to march on London. We hope to fill Whitehall from end to end with protesters. The march starts at Tothill Street near St James's Park Tube station at 12.30pm. It will be led by a jazz band and will march past Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street before the rally takes place in Trafalgar Square. It is due to finish by 2pm. SSE has arranged coaches to take supporters from this area. Exact pick up location will be decided nearer the date and depend upon how many people want to come by coach from each location, but you can be sure that they will be calling at the larger communities. Make sure you book your ticket early to avoid disappointment. Tickets cost £7.50 and can be booked at the campaign office by phoning 01279 870558. And More locally On Sunday 24 November there will be the Last Chance Rally at Sworders Field, Bishop's Stortford. There will be food, drinks, music and speeches, everything you could possibly want on a Sunday afternoon. The fun starts at 2.30pm. Money, Money, Money A Campaign like Stop Stansted Expansion needs money like a car needs petrol. If the campaign runs out of money then the campaign stops. SSE has published some preliminary accounts on its website "Latest News" page and we invite all members to take a close look. As you can see, the money that was donated in the first wave of the campaign is starting to be used up on things like office expenses, posters, stickers and so on. Even though many people are working voluntarily, it is still necessary to pay experts for advice and British Telecom are not donating any phone lines. It is your campaign and if you want to keep it going you will have to either donate more money or help to raise funds in some way. Everything that has been done and spent so far will be wasted if the campaign cannot keep going through the period up to the White Paper and then come back with renewed force if the Government decides to ignore us. It would be great if we could just ask members to donate £10 to join and the runways will go away, but that was never going to happen. Please dig deep. If you have any ideas for a fundraising event please send them in. If you can organise a fundraiser locally then please do. There is so much to do that you cannot just leave it to someone else to do everything. Red Letter Days Red Letter days have been held throughout the area over the last two weekends and thousands of names have been added to the petition and hundreds of letters of protest sent to MPs. We must not rest on our laurels and need to keep up the campaign. Those who have not written yet, get scribbling - sample letters are available on the Stop Stansted Expansion website, which is http://www.stopstanstedexpansion.comDon't Forget the Noise! Don't forget to continue to complain about noise from aircraft. The FREE number is 0800 243 788 so please put this on speed-dial on your home phone and let them know when you have been disturbed by noise. BAA has to publish figures on noise complaints even. A few weeks ago Stansted Airport's Managing Director, Terry Morgan, admitted that the airport are getting so many complaints that it cannot reply to them individually (See Latest News on the http://www.stopstanstedexpansion.com website). So tell them how you feel, as keeping silent just encourages them to send more planes over you. Invite your friends Please feel free to invite your friends to join this newsletter list. If you go to the homepage for this newsletter which is http://www.smartgroups.com/SSENewsletter you will see an icon for invite new members. IF you click this and send either the greeting in the window or your own, they will be invited to subscribe. If they chose not to join, their email address will not be recorded and they will not be troubled further. While you are there, please download a membership form and a poster from http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/SSENewsletter or http://www.stopstanstedexpansion.com. Please encourage your friends and neighbours to register for this newsletter even if they don't want to join SSE. The campaign needs local co-ordinators to help organise local activities, hopefully in each neighbourhood, village or parish. If you think you could bring together a local group then email SSENewsletter@tesco.net with "Co-ordinator" in the subject field. Come and Get Your Campaign Material If you want posters or bumper stickers to distribute to others then why not just come to the SSE office in Takeley yourself rather than waiting for someone else to volunteer to bring them to you. It is above the Essex County Council Youth Centre just west of the Four Ashes traffic lights on the A120. Remember this is YOUR campaign so help everyone by helping yourself. How to Get Answers If you have any questions about the campaign or about the Expansion of Stansted airport please email SSENewsletter@tesco.net with the word "Question" in the subject line. We are unlikely to be able to answer every question immediately but we can try and answer the ones that come up most often. We can then collate these into a "Frequently Asked Questions" page on the Website to help keep you informed and cut down the workload at the office

Can anybody help Don Cowell? I found this posting at http://www.esog.org/sep1998.html... September 15, 1998 I am seeking any and all information regarding relatives and resting places of Fanny Cowell and her mother Emma White or Emma Cowell. Emma passed away in 1916. Fanny Cowell had a son born May 23, 1894 on Cherry Street, Broxted, District of Dunmow, in the sub district of Thaxted in the County of Essex, England. Frank was sent to Canada as a Home Boy by Barnardo Homes in 1903. We are relatives researching the family history and the trail runs cold at this point. All information, however insignificant it seems will be appreciated. Thank you Don Cowell cowell@ntl.sympatico.ca
