In discussing the hallucinogenic properties of jimson weed, it notes that in old days "witches" would make an ointment from jimson and fat and then administer this rectally with a broomstick. And that is where the notion of witches "flying" on brooms comes from. [NOTE jimson weed is not a "fun" high]
