Re: How to prevent and fight against The Avian Influenza (H5N1)? Attention! The Avian Influenza (H5N1) The occurrence of human influenza A (H5N1) in Southeast Asia has paralleled large outbreaks of avian influenza A (H5N1), although the avian epidemics in 2004 and 2005 have only rarely led to disease in humans. The largest number of cases has occurred in Vietnam, particularly during the third, ongoing wave, and the first human death was recently reported in Indonesia. The frequencies of human infection have not been determined, and seroprevalence studies are urgently needed. The expanding geographic distribution of avian influenza A (H5N1) infections, with recent outbreaks in Kazakstan, Mongolia, and Russia, indicates that more human populations are at risk. How to prevent and fight against The Avian Influenza (H5N1)? Look here! Shikimic acid Illicium verum Hook.f.Extract Shikimic acid is a white crystalline compound of nonnitrogenous acid found in various plants naturally. It has two kind functional groups in the same molecule, three hydroxyl groups and a carboxylic acid group, which are optically active. They can yield various kinds of esters and salts. Shikimic acid is a cyclitol, a polyhydroxylated cycloalkane containing at least three hydroxy groups in the ring at different positions. Examples are inositol and quinic acid. The most important feature of cyclitol is that there are chiral isomers, key intermediates in the biosynthesis of aromatic compounds in living metabolism. Shikimic acid is a key intermediate in the biochemical pathway from phosphoenolpyruvic acid to tyrosine. D-Erythrose-4-phosphate + Phosphoenoylpyruvate 。 7-Phospho-2-dehydro-3-deoxy- D-arabinoheptulosonate 。 3-Dehydroquinate 。 3-Dehydroshikimate 。 Shikimate 。 3-Phosphoshikimate 。 3-Phospho-5-enoylpyruvylshikimate 。 Chorismate 。 Prephenate 。 Phenylpyruvate (or p-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate) 。 L-Phenylalanine (or L-Tyrosine) Shikimic acid is a precursor of many alkaloids, aromatic amino acids, and indole derivatives. Shikimic acid is widely used as a chiral building block for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. An example of end product is an antiviral drug oseltamivir, a neuraminidase inhibitor used in the treatment and prophylaxis of both influenza A and influenza B. More about our products, please visit us in our website: http://www.organic-herb.com If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Cranberry Extract Vaccinium macrocarpon Anthocyanosides Anthocyanidins Cranberry Extract Vaccinium macrocarpon Anthocyanosides Anthocyanidins What Is It? Generations of American women have known that the bitter native cranberry isn't just the basis of a Thanksgiving relish. In fact, these small, dark red berries have a long medical history in addition to a colorful culinary one. Specifically, cranberry juice and cranberry extract appear to help prevent and even eliminate urinary tract infections. Most women develop this type of problem at least once in their lives, and some suffer from constant recurrences. The name "cranberry" evolved from "craneberry" (a common name for the low-growing shrub Vaccinum macrocarpon) because the plant。ッs flowers resemble the heads of cranes frequently spotted in the bogs where cranberries thrive. Health Benefits Early American physicians successfully applied crushed cranberries to tumors and wounds. They also used cranberries as a remedy for the age-old malady known as scurvy, a disease caused by a lack of vitamin C. It wasn。ッt too surprising, therefore, when modern scientists discovered that cranberries contain plentiful stores of this common antioxidant vitamin. Recently, Israeli researchers discovered that a compound in cranberry juice is effective against various plaque-forming bacteria that can bind to teeth and cause gingivitis and gum disease. If you。ッre considering using cranberry juice for this purpose, however, stick with the natural (and unsweetened) variety. Commercial cranberry juice cocktails are very high in sugar, a gum-disease culprit in its own right. Researchers have also found that cranberry juice may deodorize urine, a real boon for individuals who suffer from incontinence. In fact, the most popular medicinal uses by far for cranberry relate to urinary tract conditions. Specifically, cranberry may help to: Prevent and relieve symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Over the decades, countless women have used pure cranberry juice or cranberry juice cocktail to self-treat their UTIs. This common infection typically causes a burning sensation while urinating as well as a frequent and often intense urge to do so. For a long time, cranberries were thought to directly fight the infection by acidifying the urine to such an extent that bacteria such as Escherichia coli would languish or die. Today, the prevailing theory is that cranberry juice inhibits microorganisms from adhering to the mucosal cells lining the urinary tract, making it a less hospitable environment for the proliferation of E. coli and other infection-causing bacteria. Several clinical trials now corroborate that this folk remedy does indeed work. In one of the best-designed studies, published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association in 1994, Harvard researchers reported that regular consumption of cranberry juice led to reduced amounts of potentially infectious bacteria in 153 older women. The number of white blood cells--markers of the body's response to infection--were also less. And over a six-month period, the participants who drank 10 ounces of cranberry juice daily developed significantly fewer cases of UTIs. Studies in younger women have been similarly positive. In addition, when taken at the same time as prescription antibiotics for a UTI, cranberry juice or cranberry extract in supplement form may lessen the duration of the infection and help to ease such symptoms as itching, burning, and pain. In general, however, this herbal remedy is better taken to prevent recurrent UTIs than to treat a potentially serious infection that has already developed. Reduce the risk for kidney stones. Anecdotal reports indicate that cranberry may help to reduce the risk of infection when you have this painful condition, also commonly referred to as urinary stones and "bladder gravel More about our products, please visit us in our website: http://www.organic-herb.com If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Elderberry Extract Sambucus nigra Anthocyanidins Elderberry Extract Sambucus nigra Anthocyanidins The Elder tree berry has been used for centuries as a natural intestinal cleanser. Both the flower and the berry possess powerful antioxidant properties that help protect your health by attacking harmful free radicals that damage cells. Elderberries also nourish the circulatory system. Herbalists praise Elderberry as an invigorating, rejuvenating general tonic. Official Latin Name: Sambucus nigra Elderberry, also known as Black Elder, Boor Tree, Bountry, Elder, Ellanwood, Ellhorn, European Elder, and German Elder, grows in Europe and North America. The name Elder is thought to refer to an old Anglo-Saxon term, "aeld", meaning fire or kindle, as the hollow stems of the Elder were blown on a fire to get it started. Many cultures felt this tree was so special that they refused to burn the wood or use it to make furniture, lest it bring bad luck to the household. It was planted by homes to protect the house from lightning, bring prosperity, happy marriage and healthy children, and protect from evil. Elderberry helps strengthen and maintain the immune & respiratory systems. Elderberry may be taken to help prevent colds and flu. Taken at the first sign of cold or flu, Elderberry will generally reduce the course of the infection down to one or two days. Elderberry focuses on the nutritional needs of the immune system offering the body additional amounts of vitamin C, fruit acids and traces of essential oils and anthocyanci pigments. Elderberry helps eliminate toxic stagnations that are typically the home for infectious bacteria. The antibiotic, antiviral and antibacterial properties found in Elderberry also work to stimulate the skin, kidneys and lymphatic system. The Flavonoids, including Quercetin, are believed to account for the therapeutic effects of the Elderberry flowers and berries. A study in humans determined that an extract of Elderberries is an effective treatment for influenza. Animal studies have shown the flowers to have anti-inflammatory properties. The common name Elder also includes the species Sambucus canadensis, which is used interchangeably with Sambucus nigra More about our products, please visit us in our website: http://www.organic-herb.com If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Where to buy the Eucommia ulmoides Leaf Extract? Contact Mary! Eucommia ulmoides Leaf extract Tochu tea Polyphenols Eucommia ulmoides Leaf extract Tochu tea Polyphenols The suppressing effect of crude extracts of Tochu tea, an aqueous extract of Eucommia ulmoides leaves and a popular beverage in Japan, on the induction of chromosome aberrations in CHO cells and mice was studied. When CHO cells were treated with Tochu tea crude extract after MMC treatment, the frequency of chromosome aberrations was reduced. Out of 17 Tochu tea components, 5 irridoids (geniposidic acid, geniposide, asperulosidic acid, deacetyl asperulosidic acid, and asperuloside) and 3 phenols (pyrogallol, protocatechuic acid, and p-trans-coumaric acid) were found to have anticlastogenic activity. Since the anticlastogenic irridoids had an alpha-unsaturated carbonyl group, this structure was considered to play an important role in the anticlastogenicity. The anticlastogenic effect of Tochu tea extracts was examined in mice using a micronucleus assay. When mice received 1.0 ml 4% Tochu tea extract by oral gavage 6 h before intraperitoneal injection of MMC, a decrease in the frequency of micronuclei was observed. This decrease was not due to a delay in the maturation of micronucleated reticulocytes More about our products, please visit us in our website: http://www.organic-herb.com If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Where to buy the fisetin Folium Cotini Extract? Contact Mary! fisetin Folium Cotini Extract Cotinus coggygria Scop fisetin Folium Cotini Extract Cotinus coggygria Scop We have previously shown that, a flavonol, inhibits IL-4 and IL-13 synthesis by allergen- or anti-IgE-antibody-stimulated basophils. This time, we investigated the inhibition of IL-4 and IL-13 production by basophils by other flavonoids and attempted to determine the fundamental structure of flavonoids related to inhibition. We additionally investigated whether flavonoids suppress leukotriene C4 synthesis by basophils and IL-4 synthesis by T cells in response to anti-CD3 antibody. Methods: Highly purified peripheral basophils were stimulated for 12 h with anti-IgE antibody alone or anti-IgE antibody plus IL-3 in the presence of various concentrations of 18 different kinds of flavones and flavonols. IL-4 and IL-13 concentrations in the supernatants were then measured. Leukotriene C4 synthesis was also measured after basophils were stimulated for 1 h in the presence of flavonoids. Regarding the inhibitory activity of flavonoids on IL-4 synthesis by T cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells were cultured with flavonoids in anti-CD3-antibody-bound plates for 2 days. Results: Luteolin, fisetin and apigenin were found to be the strongest inhibitors of both IL-4 and IL-13 production by basophils but did not affect leukotriene C4 synthesis. At higher concentrations, these flavonoids suppressed IL-4 production by T cells. Based on a hierarchy of inhibitory activity, the basic structure for IL-4 inhibition by basophils was determined. Conclusions: Due to the inhibitory activity of flavonoids on IL-4 and IL-13 synthesis, it can be expected that the intake of flavonoids, depending on the quantity and quality, may ameliorate allergic symptoms or prevent the onset of allergic diseases More about our products, please visit us in our website: http://www.organic-herb.com If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Where to buy the Fo-Ti Root Extract? Contact Mary! Fo-Ti Root Extract Ho Shou Wu Polygonum multiflorum Phosphetides Fo-Ti Root Extract Ho Shou Wu Polygonum multiflorum Phosphetides Fo-Ti is one of the most widely used Chinese tonic herbs. Fo-Ti Root is well recognized as a rejuvenating and longevity tonic in China, where it's consumed routinely by those concerned with youthful strength and vigor. There is also evidence that Fo-Ti offers natural nutritional support for healthy cholesterol levels. Official Latin Name: Polygonum multiflorum Fo-Ti is a plant native to China where it continues to be widely grown. Fo-Ti is also grown extensively in Japan and Taiwan. Traditional Chinese herbalists place great emphasis on the shape & age of the roots, with the older roots being in greater demand. The unprocessed root is sometimes used. However, once it has been boiled in a special liquid made from black beans, it is considered a superior and rather different medicine according to traditional Chinese medicine. The unprocessed root is sometimes called "White Fo-Ti", and the processed root is "Red Fo-Ti". The Chinese common name for Fo-Ti, he-shou-wu, was the name of a Tang dynasty man whose infertility was supposedly cured by Fo-Ti; in addition, his long life was attributed to the tonic properties of this herb. Since then, traditional Chinese medicine uses Fo-Ti to treat premature aging, weakness, vaginal discharges, numerous infectious diseases, angina pectoris, and impotence. All of the active constituents of Fo-Ti have yet to be determined. Fo-Ti does contain a number of glycosides that account for the herbs use as a remedy for stomach disorders and constipation. Researchers suspect that the roots may contain compounds with mild cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory effects. The whole root has been shown to lower cholesterol levels, according to animal and human research, as well as to decrease hardening of the arteries, or arteriosclerosis. Other Fo-Ti research has investigated this herb's role in strong immune function, red blood cell formation, and antibacterial action. The unprocessed roots possess a mild laxative effect. Where to buy the FOS? Contact Mary! Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) Oligofructoseor Sucrosetrisacchride Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) Oligofructoseor Sucrosetrisacchride 1) Brief Introduction of FOS Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) is also known as Oligofructoseor or Sucrosetrisacchride. It exists in fruits and vegetables, such as burdock (3.6%), onion (2.8%), garlic (1.0%), rye (0.7%) and bananas (0.3%). It is an indispensable element of human diet, ranking 7th among nutrients. FOS was discovered in 1950, produced industrially by Japan and first marketed in 1982. In 1992, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan approved it and designated it as a specific health food, to be applied in more than 500 kinds of food; the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States has also recognized FOS as a GRAS food ingredient to be widely used in food production; in Europe FOS is also widely used in food as a functional sweet substitute that can control levels of cholesterol. In the mid-and-late 1990s, FOS was extensively used in Taiwan and Korea. In China, the research and development of FOS was listed as a key project to be tackled in the Ninth Five-Year Plan. Now FOS production has reached a sizable scale, and it is used in many famous brands of health food. Following the world trend, more and more Chinese enterprises in the food and health food industries are using FOD to upgrade their products or develop new ones. 2) Physiological Functions of FOS After years of research, many countries (including China) have recognized that FOS is very effective in improving the functions of the intestines, preventing constipation and diarrhoea, lowering blood cholesterol, and increasing the body。ッs immunity. Its functional mechanism is twofold: First, with its unique structure, FOS cannot be digested by hydrochloric acid and enzymes in the digestive tract; therefore it can reach the large intestines, to be swiftly and selectively absorbed by bifidobacterium, a useful bacteria group, which enables bifidobacterium to reproduce quickly. It will simultaneously produce a kind of fatty acid, making the PH value in the intestines a bit acidic. Then it can check the growth of harmful bacteria group, lower the activity of some harmful reeducates, and reduce the formation and accumulation of carcinogenic substance and harmful metabolites in the intestines, thus clearing the waste in the intestines. Second, FOS is a water-soluble diet fiber that can lower serum cholesterol and improve fatty metabolism with consistent usage. 3) Physical and chemical features of FOS 1. Sweetness and tastiness: FOS, with a purity of 50%-60%, is 60% as sweet as cane sugar, and FOS, with a purity of 95%, is only 30% as sweet as cane sugar. It tastes good and pure, so when it is used in drinks and food, it will moderate their sweetness and improve their tastiness. It can also be used with highly sweet agents such as Aspartame to replace cane sugar so as to enhance the sweetness of the food. FOS is a sugarless, low calorie and high fiber food ingredient. 2. Calorific value: The calorific value of FOS as measured in the body is as low as 1.5Kcal/g. To add FOS to drinks and food will greatly lower and reduce their calories. 3. Viscosity: Within the range of 0 to 70 degrees, the viscosity of FOS is similar to that of Isomerized Sugar, and it will become smaller as the temperature rises. It is easily operable when processing food. 4. Moisture activity The moisture activity of FOS is about the same as that of cane sugar. 5. Property of moisture preservation The property of moisture preservation of FOS is similar to that of sorb wine or maltose. It is suitable for food that calls for a longish period of moisture preservation so that food can remain on shelves longer. 6. Thermal stability The thermal stability of FOS is similar to that of cane sugar at 120 degrees under neutral conditions. 7. Other processing features FOS has good solubility, non-coloring property, forming property and anti-aging property. 4) The principal differences between FOS and IMO In the body FOS is only absorbed selectively by the useful bifidobacterium and exploited by the useful lactobacillus; that is, it can increase the useful bacteria and check the harmful ones (pathogenic bacteria), thus having the function of two-way adjustment, while IMO can be exploited by some clostridia and most of the clostridia in the intestines are harmful rotten bacteria that make one feel uncomfortable in the digestive tract. Therefore, although IMO is beneficial to the reproduction of useful bacteria, it is also beneficial to the reproduction of harmful bacteria. Hence it does not have the function of Bi-directional adjustment. 1. As proven by scientific experiment on the body: FOS can reproduce bifidobacterium quickly by 10 to 100 times, while IMO can only reproduce bifidobacterium by 2 to 4 times. 2. FOS is a water-soluble diet fiber. It has low calorific value and is hard to digest, whereas IMO can be dissolved by the digestive enzyme, and 25% of it will be turned into glucose. Besides, the calorific value of IMO is five times that of glucose, even higher than that of cane sugar. 3. FOS has the function of lowering blood fat and improving fatty metabolism. This function is unique to FOS. 4. The effective daily intake of FOS is superior to that of IMO, the former being 3g and the latter 9g, three times the quantity of FOS. Estimated in accordance with the biological efficiency ratio, the quantity of IMO used is at least three times that of FOS. 5. FOS tastes better and purer than cane sugar, having a mellow taste and lasting fruit flavor. It greatly improves the outward appearance and texture of food products. This is a merit not enjoyed by IMO, and it makes it possible for FOS to be used extensively. 5) Use of FOS Owing to its many outstanding physiological functions and physical and chemical features, FOS is now widely used in the food and health food industries both at home and abroad. It is used in more than 500 kinds of food, health food, and drugs, and is acclaimed as a new source of health sugar of the 21st century that has nutrition, health care, and curative effect rolled into one. Products added with FOS added are becoming more and more popular among customers. 1. As Poietin for bifidobacterium, FOS not only can make its function attached to the product, but also can overcome some defects of the original product, making it a better product. For instance, if FOS is added to unfermented dairy products (unprocessed milk, milk powder, etc.), it can solve the problem of excessive internal heat and constipation suffered by old people and children when taking in supplementary nutrition. If FOS is added to fermented dairy products, it will supply a nutritive source for the live bacteria of the product, which will strengthen the live bacteria and prolong the quality-guaranteed period of the product. If FOS is added to grain products, it will improve their quality and enable the product to remain on shelves longer. 2. As a Diet fiber, FOS can effectively lower serum cholesterol. It has a good effect on such cardiovascular diseases as high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis caused by hyperlipidemia. If FOS is added to food or health food that is designed to lower blood pressure and adjust blood cholesterol, it will not only enhance the effect of the product, but also upgrade the product, making it tastier. 3. As an Activating element for Ca, Mg, Fe, etc., FOS will enable the body to absorb those minerals and trace elements. Therefore, if FOS is added to food or health food products for enriching Ca, Fe, Zn, etc., it will enhance their functions. 4. As Nutrient, FOS can promote the natural formation of compound vitamin B, which has good effects on the brain, nervous system, digestion and energy. For instance, if FOS is added to the nourishing food designed to enhance the immunity of the body, it will not only enhance the effect of the food but also lessen the internal heat it may produce. 5. As a unique Sweetening reagent which is of low in sugar and low in calories, and which is hard to digest, and when added to the food, FOS will not only improve the taste of the product and lower the calorific value of the food, but also enable it to remain on shelves longer. If FOS is added to the diet food, it will greatly lower the calorific value of the product; if it is added to the low sugar food, the blood sugar will not easily increase; if added to wines, it will prevent precipitate, making the wine more transparent and mellow; if added to drinks or tea, the drinks or tea will have a better flavor. 6. As a Beautifying element added to the beautifying food or skin care articles, FOS will enhance their beautifying functions. 7. Other uses: If FOS is added to the baked food, it will enhance the luster and crispness of the food, and it is conducive to dilation. 6) Successful Areas of Application for FOS 1. Drinks: carbonic acid drinks, soya-bean milk, milk drinks, ade, tea drinks, nutritive drinks, cocoa, powder drinks, etc. 2. Dairy products: milk, flavored milk, fermented milk, lactobacilli drinks, and various kinds of milk powder 3. Candies and cakes: various kinds of soft and hard candy, sorghum candy, sticky candy, chocolate, various kinds of biscuit, and Western-style pastries 4. Sweet pastries: pudding, jelly, gel food, etc. 5. Health foods: various kinds of health food (particularly those for old people and children) 6. Others: processed meat products, aquatic products, jam, honey products, etc. More about our products, please visit us in our website: http://www.organic-herb.com If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Where to buy the galangal Root Extract? Contact Mary! galangal Root extract Alpinia galanga galangine, alpinin galangal Root extract Alpinia galanga galangine, alpinin Raw and cooked minced beef samples containing commercial antioxidants or galangal (Alpinia galanga) extract were evaluated for storage stability at 4 。タ 1 。紊. Thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values of raw and cooked samples containing galangal extract at 5 and 10% (w/w) were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than those of the controls. In raw beef, galangal extract at 10% (w/w) was as effective as -tocopherol at 0.10% (w/w) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) at 0.02% (w/w) in inhibiting/minimising lipid oxidation. Galangal extract also delayed the induction period of lipid oxidation in cooked beef but was again observed to be effective at a higher concentration than the commercial antioxidants studied. No difference in total plate count was observed in raw beef, but samples with galangal extract had higher Hunter a (redness) and chroma (colourfulness relative to the brightness of the surroundings) values. However, cooked beef treated with galangal extract or antioxidants had lower Hunter a values and total microbial counts than the control. Thus galangal extract may be a possible natural antioxidant source for meat and meat products More about our products, please visit us in our website: http://www.organic-herb.com If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Where to buy the GLA? Contact Mary! Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) evening primrose oil (EPO) Overview Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an essential fatty acid (EFA) in the omega-6 family that is found primarily in plant-based oils. EFAs are essential to human health but cannot be made in the body. For this reason, they must be obtained from food. EFAs are needed for normal brain function, growth and development, bone health, stimulation of skin and hair growth, regulation of metabolism, and maintenance of reproductive processes. Linoleic acid (LA), another omega-6 fatty acid, is found in cooking oils and processed foods and converted to GLA in the body. GLA is then broken down to arachidonic acid (AA) and/or another substance called dihomogamma-liolenic acid (DGLA). AA can also be consumed directly from meat, and GLA is available directly from evening primrose oil (EPO), black currant seed oil, and borage oil. Most of these oils also contain some linoleic acid. The average North American diet provides more than 10 times the necessary amount of linoleic acid and tends to have too much omega-6 fatty acids compared to omega-3 fatty acids, another important class of EFAs. In fact, for optimum health, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids should be between 1:1 and 4:1. The typical North American and Israeli diets are usually in the range of 11:1 to 30:1. This imbalance contributes to the development of long-term diseases such as heart disease, cancer, asthma, arthritis, and depression as well as, possibly, increased risk of infection. Interestingly, not all omega-6 fatty acids behave the same. Linoleic acid (not to be confused with alpha-linolenic acid, which is in the omega-3 family) and arachidonic acid (AA) tend to be unhealthy because they promote inflammation, thereby increasing the risk of the diseases mentioned when consumed in excess. In contrast, GLA may actually reduce inflammation. Much of the GLA taken from the oils mentioned or as a supplement is not converted to AA, but rather to DGLA. DGLA competes with AA and prevents the negative inflammatory effects that AA would otherwise cause in the body. Having adequate amounts of certain nutrients in the body (including magnesium, zinc, and vitamins C, B3, and B6) helps to promote the conversion of GLA to DGLA rather than AA. It is important to know that many experts feel that the science supporting the use of omega-3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation and prevent diseases is much stronger than the information regarding use of GLA for these purposes. Two important, and most studied, omega-3 fatty acids include eicosopentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both found in fish and fish oils. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uses Some clinicians and preliminary research suggest that GLA may be useful for the following purposes: Diabetes Omega-6 fatty acid supplementation, in the form of GLA from EPO or other sources may assist nerve function and help prevent nerve disease experienced by those with diabetes (called peripheral neuropathy and felt as numbness, tingling, pain, burning, or lack of sensation in the feet and/or legs). Eye Disease GLA may be beneficial in dry-eye conditions such as Sj?gren's syndrome (a condition with symptoms of dry eyes, dry mouth, and, often, arthritis). Osteoporosis A deficiency in essential fatty acids (including GLA and EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid) can lead to severe bone loss and osteoporosis. Studies have shown that supplements of GLA and EPA together help maintain or increase bone mass. Essential fatty acids may also enhance calcium absorption, increase calcium deposits in bones, diminish calcium loss in urine, improve bone strength, and enhance bone growth, all of which may contribute to improved bone mass and, therefore, strength. Menopausal Symptoms Although EPO has gained some popularity for treating hot flashes, the research to date has not demonstrated a benefit of GLA or EPO over taking a placebo. With that said, there are individual women who report improvement; therefore, it may be worthwhile to talk to your doctor about whether it is safe for you to try EPO or another form of GLA supplements to alleviate hot flashes. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) Although results of studies have been mixed, some women find relief of their PMS symptoms when using GLA supplements from EPO or another source. The symptoms that seem to be helped the most are breast tenderness and feelings of depression as well as irritability and swelling and bloating from fluid retention. Breast tenderness from causes other than PMS may also improve with use of GLA. Eczema Several early studies suggested that EPO (rich in GLA) is more beneficial than placebo at relieving symptoms associated with this skin condition such as itching, redness, and scaling. However, more recent studies have not had the same positive results testing GLA supplements derived from EPO. The bottom line is that whether EPO and GLA supplements work for someone with eczema may be very individual. Talk to your doctor about the possibility and safety of trying GLA for this condition. Allergies People who are prone to allergies may require more EFAs and often have difficulty converting LA to GLA. In fact, women and infants who are prone to allergies appear to have lower levels of GLA in breast milk and blood. To date, the use of EFAs to prevent allergic reactions or reduce their magnitude has had mixed results. There have been some reports of individuals lessening their allergic reaction by taking GLA from EPO. For example, one young boy who broke out in hives when around dogs, no longer had this response after taking EPO for one month. Well-conducted research studies are needed to determine whether EPO can be helpful for large numbers of people with allergies. On the other hand, a study evaluating dietary intake of omega-6 fatty acids relative to the risk of having hay fever (called allergic rhinitis) found different results for this other type of allergic reaction. Nurses in Japan with higher amounts of omega-6 in their diet were more likely to have hay fever. Omega-6 fatty acids from the diet or supplements, such as GLO from EPO or other sources, have a longstanding history of folk use for allergies. Whether this supplement improves your symptoms, therefore, may be very individual. Work with your healthcare provider to first determine if it is safe for you to try GLA and then follow your allergy symptoms closely for any signs of improvement or lack there of. Rheumatoid Arthritis Some preliminary information indicates that GLA, from EPO, borage oil, or black currant seed oil, may diminish joint pain, swelling, and morning stiffness. GLA may also allow for reduction in the amount of pain medication used by those with rheumatoid arthritis. The studies to date, however, have been small in size. Additional research would be helpful, including testing a proposed theory that using GLA and EPA (an omega-3 fatty acid from fish and fish oil) together would be helpful for rheumatoid arthritis. In the meantime, talk to your doctor about whether using GLA is safe for you and then pay attention, over 1 to 3 months of use, to whether your symptoms get better or not. In terms of borage oil, some researchers theorize that it may not be safe to use with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, which are commonly used for arthritis). This theory needs to be tested. See Possible Interactions. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Research to date has suggested an improvement in symptoms and behaviors related to ADHD from omega-3 fatty acids. Results of studies supplying omega-6 fatty acids in the form of GLA from EPO or other sources to children with ADHD, however, have been mixed and, therefore, not conclusive. More research on GLA for ADHD is needed before conclusions can be drawn. In the meantime, ensuring a healthier balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids in the diet seems worthwhile for those with this behavioral condition. Alcoholism EPO may help lessen cravings for alcohol and prevent liver damage. Some of this information comes from animal studies; more research in people is needed. Cancer Results of studies looking at the relationship of omega-6 fatty acids to cancer have been mixed. While LA and AA are cancer promoting in studies of colon, breast, and other cancers, GLA has shown some benefit for breast cancer in certain studies. The information is not conclusive and is somewhat controversial. The safest bet is to eat a diet with the proper balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids (see How To Take It), starting from a young age, to try to prevent the development of cancer. Weight Loss Results of studies regarding use of EPO for weight loss have been mixed and, therefore, use of this type of supplement won't work for everyone. One study suggests that if the supplement is going to work, it does so mainly for overweight individuals for whom obesity runs in the family. In addition, a few other small studies suggest that the more overweight you are, the more likely that EPO will help. In fact, if your body weight is only 10% above normal (for example, 10 to 20 pounds above average), EPO is unlikely to help you lose weight. High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease Animal studies suggest that GLA, either alone or in combination with two important omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA both found in fish and fish oil, may lower the blood pressure of hypertensive rats. Together with EPA and DHA, the GLA helped to prevent the development of heart disease in these animals as well. It is unclear whether these benefits would occur in people. In one study evaluating people with peripheral artery disease (blockage in the blood vessels in the legs from atherosclerosis [plaque] causing cramping pain when walking), men and women with this condition did experience improvement in their blood pressure from the combination of EPA and GLA. Much more research is needed in people before conclusions can be drawn. Plus, it may not be the GLA conferring the benefit at all 。ァC the omega-3 fatty acids, which are better known for improving blood pressure and the risks for heart disease, may be solely responsible. Ulcers Very preliminary evidence from test tube and animal studies suggest that GLA from EPO may have anti-ulcer properties. It is premature to know how this might apply to people with stomach or intestinal ulcers or gastritis (inflammation of the stomach). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dietary Sources GLA is found in the plant seed oils of evening primrose, black currant, borage, and fungal oils. Spirulina (often called blue-green algae) also contains GLA More about our products, please visit us in our website: http://www.organic-herb.com If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Where to buy the Extract Cotton Root Seed ? Contact Mary! Extract Cotton Root seed Gossypol Acetate Gossypol. Gossypol is a chemical extracted from cotton roots. It has been used in China as a male contraceptive, and cotton root was used as folk medicine in the American South to treat menstrual pain and to induce abortions. The chemical destroys the lining of tubules in the testicles where sperm are produced, thereby inhibiting their formation. A 2000 Brazilian study reported that a male oral contraceptive derived from gossypol suppressed sperm production within up to 16 weeks. In men who were taking lower doses, sperm production returned in most of them within a year after they stopped taking the contraceptive. In the high dose group, sperm count reversed in less than half. Gossypol did not appear to reduce sexual desire or frequency of intercourse. It also may not be very effective, since even if small numbers of sperm survive, they may get through to penetrate the egg. Researchers are investigating gossypol-derived compounds that may have less toxicity. (No one should take any so-called natural gossypol product without consultation with a physician. 6. Smoking has been linked directly to sexual dysfunction in men, and it's believed to have a similar effect in women. One noted urologist, speaking on the news program 60 Minutes, said when he sees a man smoking, he wonders when -- not if -- he will experience erectile dysfunction. A smokers risk of heart attack is more than twice that of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking is the biggest risk factor for sudden cardiac death -- smokers are looking at two to four times the risk of nonsmokers. Studies have shown that cigarette smoking is also an important risk factor for stroke. The evidence also indicates that chronic exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke, passive smoking) may increase the risk of heart disease. No, FAIRCOPY doesn't use any copy protection. Copies are simply ciphered to distribute them, but once you get a copy and buy it, the deciphered copy is just a plain MP3 file (or PDF, or whatever) without restrictions.

Yours looks very similar to weedshare - same reliance on copy protection, no derivative works. Theirs has smarter DRM than yours - their users get 3 plays before having to pay. I'm not conviced that DRM reliance can work, myself. Low friction is important; increasing the value of transactions by selling more meaningful rights (lifetime download rights without arbitrary DRM restrictions) is a key to this. Additionally, aggregating the the various promotion fee payments into a significant sum for a week or month helps reduce the friction. The goal is not micropayments, but reasonable voluntary payments.

The financial friction of online transactions will be the major barrier to this concept. Spreading the cost of the middleman across promoters and creators is a great idea but reducing the fees of small payments is key.

Yup. Sampling is a gray area, and a lot of it should be covered under fair use. The interpretation of law has gone too far favoring copyright holders over new art. A system requiring automated compensation for sampling isn't much of an improvement over a system that requires legal research and compensation. It's still more restrictive than it should be.

Adina, The definition of what is a 'snippet' is problematic. Sampling is a grey area in current law. This system gives a way to incorporate works and reward their creators without negotiation, significantly lowering the barriers to entry that currently exist outside the world of the Public Domain.

Adina. We have a working self-syndication system now at www.intv.com. In the fall we expect to begin offering content creators revenue generating options. I really like the idea of a content marketplace that pays creators, and people who refer others.
I think it can be simplified by removing the requirement to attribute snippets of source content, which I think is unworkable in real art which is always composite and derivative.
What's been done to make the idea happen? Any evangelization efforts with indy musicians and indy labels? Partner opportunities with weblog sites and other good sources of referrals? Where does this get started?

A lot of good questions, Richard.
At present mediAgora is a high-level design for a market model. I envisage it being administered largely automatically through a computer database, much as eBay and Amazon are.
Your next three questions miss the point. For a given work, creative contributions are agreed by the creators - you fill in a form and list the work, its creators and their contributions, and it gets stored in a database. Each creator listed has to agree to it through their account (they need accounts to get paid).
If your work incorporates another work, that work is listed as a source work. When your work is bought, it in effect triggers a purchase of all source works it includes. Thus all contributions are tracked and counted - the purchase price of your work will include the source works too (though if the purchaser already owns the source work, they do not buy it again).
You can of course publish shorter extracts of your own work as separate, cheaper works to encourage others to use these for derivatives instead of the full work. You can adjust the promotion fee on these to create the reward structure you want.
The point of all this is to avoid endless billing hours by establishing a fair default behaviour for incorporating works, instead of the morass we have now, with complicated mixtures of statutory and negotiated mechanical, performance, composition and broadcast rights.
If you don't like the default agreement, and want to negotiate different terms with your source work, either a buyout or a direct creator percentage, you are free to do that too.
As for when payment is made, this is implementation dependent. The creators could be paid on purchase, with the promotion fees distributed at the end of each accounting period, or the creator fees could be distributed at the same time. I expect there would be a minimum accounting period to allow time for possible plagiarism challenges to be mounted.
I'm not sure what you mean by a flat fee- the price of each work is fixed, but how this is divided is specified clearly by the creator split and the promotion parameters. If you are thinking of a subscription model, I can envisage one being offered on top of the underlying payment scheme, but this would in effect have someone covering the costs for the subscribers who exceed the purchase price.
This is not a proposal to replace copyright law (I agree with Lessig that the public domain should be expanded though). Once works are public domain, many people will be able to register them. I envisage various digitizers of works registering them and charging for their digitization skills, with prices kept in check by competition.
As for an 'unholy mess of confused relationships', you're wrong. That describes the current situation of rights clearances all too well - believe me as someone who has worked on million dollar media projects involving hundreds of source works. The relationships defined here are designed to be simple and clear to administer digitally.
If your argument about free music held up, no CDs would be bought. Some people pay, some don't. You can pursue the copyright violators through the courts, but this system gives a direct monetary incentive to those who promote works within it, as well as a clarity about how much and who is getting paid.
The point of free markets is that they are free - if you're not willing to sell directly, you are free look for someone to commission you. But you shouldn't have to agree to a seven-album deal to get access to the marketplace.
If you commission a work, you can register as the creator, yes. You could administer any royalty payments yourself, or you could list the artist as a co-creator with a percentage split.

Just looked over this.
How is it going to be administered? How are creative contributions going to be tracked? Will there be a cut-off point after which if my sample (or whatever) is re-re-sampled after so many generations it's no longer counted? Or will every last contribution be counted, all the time? How will the perecentage value of an individual sample be calculated? (I can see that one causing endless billing hours for lawyers on its own.)
At what point will payment be made, and how? If there's a flat fee revenue model, how is that going to be divided up among the various creators involved?
Will works ever be allowed to move into the public domain, or will the relationships between all parties (and their descendants) last in perpetuity?
Overall the whole thing looks like a great idea until you start thinking about how it's actually going to work. Then it stops being quite so convincing. In fact it starts to look like an unholy mess of confused relationships that's going to be impossible to administer, electronically or otherwise.
And I still don't understand why people would want to pay for music if they can P2P it or copy it physically for free.
I'm also not convinced that free markets are such a great way to be selling creative works. The people who really make a living currently work on a commission basis. Even where the commission is an album deal, it's still the advance (i.e. commission payment) that really counts. Royalties are the icing on the cake in comparison.
If I commission a work, does that make me equivalent to the creator? Can I buy the rights to a work and use those rights for gain if it couldn't have been created without my financial support?

I stumbled on this discussion while doing some research on linux, and I really appreciate the high level of discourse here.
I thought you might like to hear from a joe average guy and how the new media has affected my music consumption habits, maybe it will help with your thinking.
I'm 38, I've been buying albums/cd's since I was a teenager. Also during my youth I had a tape deck as did all my friends and we all shared tapes of each other's albums freely. We also recorded concerts off the radio and shared them. This intensified during my college years. As I got older my priorities shifted, I have to feed my family and all, so now I buy many fewer shrink-wrapped music products. I don't download music either, except for live recordings where the bands have given permission for the free distribution of their performances.
I wish I could say that because of my computer and the Internet that I have discovered more fresh music and I'm buying and supporting new artists and so forth. The fact is that I'm using my computer to save money - I still trade music (physically trading home-burnt CDs) with people in my neighborhood and I also am recording my old albums onto CD, which I think is a totally fair use of those disks. I happen to think of the ticks and pops on my albums as no big deal. The main down-side, this is all very time and labor intensive.
Anyway it all comes back to saving money. If CD's cost $5 or less, I would not go to all of this trouble. To my mind, that is the basic issue. Why has the cost of a computer and media dropped like a stone, but the cost of a music cd gone up over the past 10 years? It makes no sense to an average guy like me and while I feel bad for the artists because I know they have to feed their families too, I choose to support them by going to their live performances.
I don't see how the record companies can stop this type of activity, because all of the copy protection schemes that they come up with deal with pure cloning of the source. However, if you simply play a CD in your stereo and take the analog ouput and feed that into your sound card, there is nothing to stop you from making a very similar and high quality copy. Not an exact copy, but good enough for 99% of us.
Why can't the record companies take advantage of all of this technology and reduce their costs and lower the costs of the end product? They could be selling many many more shrinkwrapped disks if they simply lowered the price. I should be able to log on to arista.com and by a cd from any artist they produce for $5. Cut out the middleman, pay a buck for shipping, $1 to the artist, $2 profit, $1 for the physical disk and packaging. Maybe the real costs are much greater than this but $15 for a cd is unbelievable.

The collapse is not complete - a hybrid role is possible - as all creators act as promoters too. In particular, if you create a derivative work (such as an additional commentary soundtrack on a movie) you are a promoter for the source work and a creator for the new part.
You may get huckster promoters who only list works with a high commisson, but if they don't find customers for them, they don't get paid.
The 'curators' you have in mind, and even most reviewers, will value their reputation and integrity more than the transient rewards of insincere promotion. The payment model favours Creators and those Promoters who make sales. Long chains of promoters who don't make sales don't get rewarded. Also, remember that you have to buy a copy of the work to promote it, which creates a fiscal disincentive for scattergun promotion.
A reputation tracking system, as eBay has for buyers and sellers, would help. Additionally, if works have both a 'free sample' and a paid version, you can get a direct effectiveness ratio for each promoter based on the ratio of the free samples to the actual sales.

Thanks for the clarification. OK so from a transaction viewpoint, custodians collapse into promoters and producers back into creators.
So, assuming MediAgora got real big, how are those who browse for content to be assured they can go somewhere for a 'fair' can thorough listing of what is available (as in a library)?
If promoters get money via the referrals, will not lists distort towards the items offering the larger 'commission'?
Where is the 'agora' (of a fully accessible - multiply meta-tagged - content) emerge?
How is mediAgora to avoid operating in either a non-scalable niche or get swamped by 'promoters' (in the old fashion sense)?

I know that musical scores are different than performances, but they are both creative works, and I don't see the need for different logic. If I buy a recording, both the performer and the composer are creators, and deserve payment. In the mediAgora model, the composer would set a fee for the score, and the performer would set a fee for his performance, and the customer would pay both.
I hadn't considered theatrical performances, but they could be covered in a similar way - if I want to perform a play at the moment, I need to negotiate a performance fee with copyright holder, based on the capacity of my theatre, and I need to pay the performers. If we extended the mediAgora model to this, the playwright would agree a per-audience-member performance fee, as would the actors. Alternatively, a producer could negotiate with both to pay them a flat fee, and be listed as the creator of the performance.
Your 'Custodians' can act as promoters of the works they are passionate about, or as co-creators of a derivative annotated work by incorporating the original work they love into it. They are not selling directly, but encouraging people to buy the original work. I don't see a need for a further distinction here.

With cutlural content, core roles should be: Creators (authors), Producers, Custodians, Promoters and Customers.
Currently, creators can be -- Authors or Producers (or both). Musical scores are not the same as the performances based on them. Payments should distinguish. Promoters might just as well prompt a 'consumption event' (ie buy the book) or a 'production event' (ie do a theatrical rendition of some play). Different logic, differnt payment streams.
Further, to respect 'owners' - I think you can have both the author (as before) and the Custodian. Custodians are people passionate about some content - ofen showing greater zeal and care than the authors. They might appear as 'promoters' but that confuses their motivation : to collate, order, describe, etc a set of works. Like librarians they often don't think of 'selling' as much as 'encouraging'. A rental back-payment ought to find its way to finance their efforts (particularly important when you are trying to finance meta-tags that actually work).

Let me clarify why mediAgora is not a pyramid scheme, and not even an MLM scheme by any usual criteria.
The bulk of the money goes to the creators, unless they deliberately set their promotion fee higher than their sales price.
The distribution chains are not fixed, but vary for each work sold.
The reward function explcitly benefits those at the sales end if targets are met at the expense of those further from the sales - this is the direct opposite of an MLM or Pyramid scheme.
I see no reason why non-profits can't act as promoters of works, as long as it does not conflict with their articles of organisation or charitable status, but I would oppose restricting this role to them alone - the whole point is that anyone can play any role.

Hi: Well, what if we had a product to work with, while we're doing this? That way, we can all fight over the riches, as it happens. <grin> Why not?
Anyway, something to think about, along the lines of MLM.
The typical MLM works such that the top gets good things, and the bottom gets nothing.
Well, what if the top was a non-profit organization? What if all the next tier were non-profit organizations? What if, the bottom tier[s] were people who only got whatever the product was, plus, maybe a couple bucks?
Now, it doesn't matter where in the pyramid the tree starts, but within the tree, for the non-profits, what happens, is, they get fund-raising signicantly from participating. What if, the National Association of Fund Raising Consultants, or whatever, comprised of what, 50,000 consultants all going out and promoting this MLM to their clients, who, in turn, are on the tree, and benefitting? Sounds good to me. Sounds like a good thing to the small non-profits, if they're given a preferential spot on the pyramid.
Taking that, now, how would we modify it to work within the framework being developed by you folks with the "vision"?
I can see something like this working well, depending on the product involved. It's really all about pulling the clout of a lot of non-profits that now squabble and fight, and infight over the scarcity of dollars. This might be a lead-in into a system that benefits the Public Domain, and the non-profits as well. What do you think?

Yes, sorry - your sums are right. That 'll teach me to do it in my head.
On the wider point though, I think you are falling into the Pyramid sales trap - looking at the perfect exponential case that is dangled before all the victims of pyramid schemes, and then complaining that mediAgora isn't pyramidal enough.
In practice the number of direct sales per promoter will likely follow a Poisson distribution, and the total downline per promoter will be more like a Zipf distribution, with a few that have a huge downline and a long tail of a few sales passed on. The scenario you cite is very unlikely to happen, and I'd rather concentrate on encouraging the customers to become promoters with a slight advantage at that end. I do need to do a more detailed probablistic simulation though, as I want this to be as fair as possible to all concerned.

It's complicated no matter how you slice it, certainly. I actually wrote a perl script to do the math and make tables and such.
Your math is also coming out differently from mine. If I recommend a work to 20 friends, and they each recommend it to 10 friends, I think they would get $6.05 each while I got $100. If you don't get credit for your own sale, then they would get $5 while I get $120.
It seems strange that you can meet your quota but only get one promotional fee's worth.
In the case where the promotional fee is $1 and the quota is 20: In the current scheme, if you meet the quota you're guaranteed $1 (more if the people you sell it to don't make the quota). In a scheme where you don't get credit for your own purchase, if you make the quota you're guaranteed $20, or $1 for each direct referral.

David, you are right; that aspect of things is a little problematic, and as I discuss at the end of that page, it can give anomalous looking reward curves for pure promoters. I have tried it both ways, and I need to do some better modelling of sales to determine which works best for the majority of cases.
The idea of counting the customer's own sale was to improve the curve a bit at the other end, as otherwise the reward for the higher up promoter grows far more quickly than that of the person who just made the sale. By looking just at the saturation point, you may be getting a false picture of the likely rewards. If your friends sold it to 10 friends apiece, total sales are 221 and they would get $6.05 each, you would get $151, which may not seem right either.
With your model, they'd get $5 each, and you'd get $180.
Congratulations on making it though that page by the way - most people I've shown it to find it too complex to follow.

I'm a little confused about the way promotional fees are calculated. As I understand it, promoters are paid according to the sales they are responsible for (directly or indirectly), including their own purchases.
So, if I buy a work but don't recommend it to anyone, I get credit for no sales. But if I buy a work and recommend it to a friend who buys it, then I get credit for two sales?
Taking the example where the sales goal is 20 and the fee is $1, if I buy a copy and recommend it to 20 friends, there are 21 sales and I get $21. If I recommend it to 20 friends and they recommend it to 1 friend each, there are 41 sales, they get $0.20 each, and I get $37.
If I recommend it to 20 friends and they recommend it to 20 friends each, there are 421 sales, they get $21 each, and I get $1. That doesn't seem right.
Shouldn't the credit for your own purchase go to the person who recommended it to you? Or is that how it works and I'm misinterpreting the examples? (In that case, I would get $20, my friends would get $20 each, and the remaining $1 moves towards the creator.)

Interesting point about subscription vs. open accounting and tracking. Whether I fall into one camp or another, depends on the products and services, and I suspect the same for most folks. One nice little app that sits on the desktop and apprises one of the micropayment charges in real time will be a killer app when the Internet finally rounds the bend and declares micropayment as the default for access.
The interesting thing about the Grameen microcredit program, is that it provides a nice model for those who prefer a "loan" from a product or service-related site, and this loan is then paid back over time. Charge-down is one term that comes to mind.
Why not send the money up front? If you're reading online, rather than purchasing the book, you might want to have them front the cost, and pay later. Abuse of such a system might not make this a viable option. On the other hand, if the "membership" fee covers a typical abuse period, then this becomes a good way for both sides to learn to "trust" each other. We see something similar in some rental yards [not all].
I suspect there are those out there that can explore the variations on a theme of the microcredit model, and there will be a combination of features that fits nicely on the Internet, but not for all types of businesses. Just as the Creative Commons Project has to provide licensing and registration options for different media, and categories, so will MediAgora. Bottom line, though, is it is Digital Age time, and Kevin's here! <grin>

Micropayments are problematic because of two kinds of transaction costs. The first is the conventional cost of moving money from one place to another in a reliable way - these are the problems that Barry discusses below. PayPal in fact does allow payments as small as one cent to be sent between individuals at no cost; it only charges for businesses. You might argue that these are not micropayments, but they are certainly millipayments or centipayments. The second cost is the mental transaction cost for the individual of keeping track of all these piffling little payments. Am I running up a huge bill bit by bit - being nickeled and dimed to death? Andrew Odlyzko has researched this thoroughly, and concludes that aggregation and charging a flat fee is the answer - mobile phone price schemes being a good example. The way Amazon or Cafepress accumulate referral fees until they amount to something worth the transaction cost are another examples. In practice I expect users will fall into one of two camps - those that like the flat fee idea, and will subscribe to the content, and those that like keeping track of everything - I suspect this latter group will become promoters, if not creators. Tom, Grameen's microcredit is a different kind of thing - making loans of a few dollars to village women - but I woudl certainly welcome comments from Professor Yunus if you can put him in touch.

Barry: As an industry analyst, have you been exposed to the microcredit programs that are out there? I've been impressed by the track record, albeit along with some controversy, of the Grameen Organization, and Professor Yunus?
If Kevin can invite him to join, I think we'll find that there's a mechanism in place, using a microcredit arrangement, that might work extremely well in the Digital Age. My interest in such programs lies originally with moving donated computers to developing countries, and, as a part of that research, i.e., scaling up to work entire countries at a whack, the microcredit approach not only reduced overall costs, but shifted economies and their dependence to local control. Something we might want to look at, if MediAgora has an interest. Thanks, Tom

The FAQ about payment methodologies is very germiane to this discussion. Microcash concepts and the need to develop a technology for the payment and accounting of very small payments has been an item of discussion ever since the commercialization of the Internet in 1993/94.
Being an industry analyst, I have been watching the failure to develop such a mechanism over the years. PayPal (about to be absorbed into eBay) and it's brethren are the closest I've seen to resolving the questions. PayPal provides a means to establish electronic transfer accounts for debits and credits, but the amounts involved are still higher than those that would make mediAgora truly ubiquitous.
Resistance factors include the requirements of the Credit Card companies and banks, the limitations of current authentication technologies, and the cultural change required for user and seller acceptance. The mediAgora and commons concepts, as they percolate through the user culture. To make this a mass phenomena requires greater coordination among parties, acceptance of authentication plans from major companies that might rub against the grain for some early adopters, and perhaps the development of new technologies.
One of the reasons there is a need for new technologies, is that delivery of 'works' to computers will be the least important platform in the future. There will be a need for people and organizations to have ubiquitous, device independent identities for authentication and payment. There's been lots of work on this subject over the years; more needs to be done. This site should devote significant resources to the encouragement of these on going developments.
