I had this book as a kid -- well, I still do -- and treasured it like my friends did their Barbies. Back then I didn't get quite all the jokes, but now... boy howdy! Great stuff. I didn't know it had won a Hugo!

Nice to see online. 'Science made stupid' and 'Culture made stupid' are two of my most treasurede posessions. Did Tom Weller do anything else?

Tom Weller's Culture Made Stupid nearly did me in. I was working as a literary criticism reference series editor at the time, and what got me was his footnote that said (approximately) "All quotations from Shakespeare will be from the edition on my shelf -- the big one, with the pink cover."
My cousin Joe, who's a professional actor and singer, had the same reaction to the passage about how opera had brought something new that Western theatre had hitherto lacked: Fat people bellowing in foreign languages.
CMS's chart of proofreader's marks, and what the indicia on copyright pages really mean, went up on bulletin boards all over the industry.
Tom Weller is a genius.

"went up on bulletin boards all over the industry."
Oh yeah.
I worked for a technical writing sweatshop in upstate NY for a few years. Most of the other guys were orthodox and observervant jews. They were from isolated, TV-free, pop-culture-unaware communities. The postmodern satire on the pages from Culture Made Stupid -- proofreader's marks, and the listing of fonts ("buckler, with swash") -- that I hung up just totally blew them away.
'The ink was from a can.'

Hi, guys. Just stumbled by this site on my way to somewhere else, but then my ears were burning (aiiieee!!). I humbly, yet proudly ... no, happily, yes happily, hear your kind words. Glad you enjoyed my tiny contribution to world stupidity. Ad astra per aspirin!

You know this was the 1986 Hugo winner for non-fiction? It's selling used online for no less than $50, alas. (And I ain't a-sellin' mine, neither). Check bublos.com to see what it is selling for at any given moment.
