Winky blinky pen

I saw this pen in action a few years ago and it is pretty slick. It was being used by a handicapped girl whose father worked for Compaq (the pen was actually branded with the Compaq name). Anyway, it was useful because if someone needed to get a hold of her while she was in class, she could leave the phone in her purse, be writing with the pen, and know her phone was ringing.

However, if you are close to someone else with a cell phone, it will flash as well. Still, it's a pretty cool toy.

Can you turn the pen off if you want?

it says the range is six feet. how does it know that it's your phone and not your neighbor's that's ringing.

There's a variety of variations of these devices... by far the coolest being the nail polish that glows on incoming calls... no link, but I read about it being onsale in japan a few years back...

Looks like you got off lightly with this mobile phone post, Mark :)

These gadgets also tell you if your phone service is being disrupted by a "no cell-phones in this restaurant" device.

Actually, very!! Not for the intended purpose, though (when shutting off the ringer in a meeting I don't want anyone to see my chest light up, I find vibrate much more useful)...when I'm messing with loading in ring tones or logos and such, if they're split across multiple messages and I didn't receive it, I wouldn't know what was going on. With the sticker, I can sort of see the data stream (if that makes any sense). For example, a 4 text ring tone I can send one message at a time (via email or web submission), and as soon as I send it stare at the phone 20 seconds and see if it lights up funky - I know it was received. If it doesn't within about a minute, I know which message in the chain didn't get through immediately (might come in HOURS later, real sucky system eh?) and resend it.

It's also dorky cool to see the back of the phone light up about 5 seconds before it starts ringing hehe early ring notification.

Have you found it useful, Jer?

These have been around for a while. Do a search on eBay for "phone sticker" and you'll come up with loads of similar items. To my surprise, I've had mine for a year and the batteries have not run out yet!
