For a great, and funny, movie on what a home can, and should, mean, check out the Australian film "The Castle" -- highly recommended.

freestone, I know someone who had a similar inkling, though she never knew why -- it was just a hunch. She's two years beyond when she thought she'd be checking out. How to live as though we may go today (which is true enough for all of us) -- e.g. putting our petty worries and frustrations in perspective -- while allowing for a good long life is a delicate balance to strike.

Yes, sainteros, it's great when our neighbors can really be part of our personal community. We were very lucky -- when we moved in, we received warm welcomes and tokens of friendship from several of our neighbors, even though we're on a fairly busy street where you wouldn't expect it.

I wish you the same in your new location!

And yes, we need to avoid thinking of a house as little more than a status symbol. One look at my lawn will tell you where I am on that spectrum :-)

Steve, interesting post. As an about-to-be homeowner (my second time around), I have to say that my motivation is more about belonging than it is about insulation. Belonging to place, forging bonds with children through interactions in a particular physical space, belonging to spouse more deeply through a shared endeavor.

That said, I've observed the trend in our culture to build ever grander houses on ever smaller plots of land, to minimize maintenance, and to turn over to paid services the responsibility for upkeep, maintenance, and security. In this sense, houses have surely become just another possession, an object of desire, and are approached increasingly with a reluctance to accept such a possession with any strings attached. It may be due in part to stresses on time, for the particularly affluent, but these stresses are surely self-inflicted.

In a slightly different vein, a number of years ago, it struck me that these gated communities we've seen spring up everywhere are the most visible symbols of what I deemed at the time to be The New Feudalism.
